This week on The Exit: When Sarah joined her father's company straight out of high school she never expected she would go on to carve out a brand new niche: supply chain media. Starting in reception at her fathers supply chain company, she slowly worked her way up, working in operations for eight years, followed by eight years in sales, eventually becoming the Director of Sales and Marketing. It was in this position that she launched a podcast about the company's brand story and the supply chain industry. But when her dad decided to shut the business down, Sarah was out of a job. She decided to focus on the podcast she had created and went on to build it into a community for people working in the supply chain. This is where the idea for Shipz came from - a platform to connect shippers and service providers. While the concept for Shipz was solid, and the technology was ready, the realities of growing a marketplace were challenging. Just when they were beginning to look for funding, they found an acquirer and ultimately sold the brand and concept. Listen to find out about the sale of a concept and how it differs from selling a revenue generating business. Sarah Barnes-Humphrey has had a career in the Logistics and Supply Chain industry for almost 25 years as she went into the family business right out of high school. On the episode Kelly, lead author of the Connecting the Dots report, shares findings from the report on the importance of the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) agenda, how SRHR leads to gender equality, the power of and need for increased U.S. investment, and policy recommendations to fully realize the SRHR agenda and improve gender equality and empowerment.   Selected Quotes: Bridget Kelly 1) The U.S. plays such an important role in the global goal to achieve gender equality as the U.S. is the largest funder and implementer of global health assistance worldwide. But what U.S. policymakers often fail to recognize is that these gender objectives are directly impacted by the availability and accessibility of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services. 2) Why are SRHR important to achieve gender equality and empowerment? Evidence shows us that girls' education, a top gender priority, and SRHR have a mutually reinforcing relationship. Early marriage and unintended pregnancy can both be a cause of and a reason as to why girls are out of school. Of the 261 million adolescent girls age 15 to 19 living in the global South, an estimated 32 million are sexually active and do not want to have a child in the next two years. Yet, 14 million of these adolescent girls have an unmet need for modern contraception and are thus at an elevated risk of unintended pregnancy. So, the barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health services puts the U.S. commitment to girls' education at risk. 3) Improved access to family planning services is linked with a higher labor force participation for women. We also know that reproductive health is a critical element to making space for women to meaningfully contribute to peace and security efforts, not only because they themselves are affected by these outcomes, but also because they are more often able to come to lasting solutions compared to their male counterparts.4) In order to create a more enabling environment for sexual and reproductive health and rights, Congress would need to pass the Global HER Act, which would permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule. The Global Gag Rule, when invoked, prevents foreign organizations receiving U.S. global health assistance from providing information, referrals, or services for legal abortion. Another Act that Congress would need to pass is the Abortion is Healthcare Everywhere Act, which would repeal the Helms Amendment. Now, the Helms Amendment prohibits U.S. foreign assistance from being used for the performance of abortion as a method of family planning. There would also need to be modifications to the Kemp-Kasten Amendment to ensure that U.S. funds are not wrongfully withheld from UNFPA.5) Now is a really opportune time to invest as the world population grows… Today there are about 1.8 billion people between the ages of 10 to 24. That is the largest generation of youth in history and close to 90% of this generation lives in the global South. And, these numbers of individuals are reproductive age are projected to grow. So, what these figures really highlight is just how critically important it is to increase U.S. foreign assistance for global sexual and reproductive health and rights in order to ensure that efforts do not fail to keep pace with the needs of this generation.

My guest for this episode of the podcast is Sarah V. Barnes, author of She Who Rides Horses. If you have ever wondered if intuition is real or questioned whether you could really trust your instincts, this podcast is for you. Sarah practiced in the logical world of academia before becoming an author. Working with horses taught her to move beyond logic. As she said in the podcast, “I feel like I'm reclaiming my birthright.” I couldn't agree more. Sarah has a lot of wisdom to offer, both in this podcast and in her book. The book She Who Rides Horses is a historical fiction account of the first person to ride a horse in about 4000 BCE. The story dances the tightrope between the hard evidence of what historians know about that time period and that which can't be known. It's a gripping tale of life, love and spirit in an era long past. Given her background, Sarah is well-equipped to tell this story.Sarah V. Barnes is both an historian and a horsewoman. When she is not writing stories, she practices and teaches riding as a meditative art. She also offers equine-facilitated coaching and wellness workshops. Sarah holds a Ph.D. in history from Northwestern University and spent many years as a college professor before turning full-time to riding and writing. She has two grown daughters and lives with her husband, her dogs, and her horses near Boulder, CO.  Website: www.sarahvbarnes.com

Get to Know Sarah: Sarah is a logistics and supply chain expert. She is passionate about collaboration, transparency, diversity, and doing better business. She's the host of the popular podcast Let's Talk Supply Chain! Kris: Is the supply chain going to get better? Do you have a message for the supply chain professionals that might be listening today?Sarah: Yeah, and it's so important, right? What you said about the fact that we have not had any relief or you know, supply chain professionals supply chains in general haven't had the relief that we need. It's sort of been one disruption after another. And you know, I have multiple friends in the industry who are supply chain professionals. And throughout the pandemic, actually, I checked on a lot of Supply Chain Leaders, because what was happening was that they were checking on their people. But the people above them weren't necessarily checking up on them. And I think we're going to talk about this a little bit later on in the interview. But people are at the heart of the supply chain, people are at the heart of this industry. And we've got to really, and I started throughout the pandemic, a buddy check that I was doing every Friday to just encourage people to tag people in the industry to say, Hey, how are you doing? Hey, I'm thinking about you, hey, I'm just checking in. And it was really important. And it's still important to this day for us to be able to check in on each other and provide each other with a safe space to vent because they might not be able to vent within their current environment. And there are a lot of challenges, you know, and some people thrive on it. Right? That's why we're in the supply chain. We're natural problem solvers. And this gets us going and gets us excited. But then there's also the mental challenges around having to do that day after day and shifting and pivoting and And so really, really important to check up on each other, check in on ourselves, give them give ourselves some grace, give others grace for what we're going through, and you know, hopefully, we're gonna see some relief because supply chains, not just the people, but supply chains need a chance to be able to have some relief from all of this disruption.Erin: Can you tell us something about those relationships, and draw a picture for those of us not in the supply chain world?Sarah: Yeah, I mean, if you think about supply chain, right, it starts out with sourcing, right? So there's sourcing, there's purchasing or procurement, then there's manufacturing, then you're moving the goods, either by air, by truck, by ocean, then they go into a warehouse for distribution. And then they are out for delivery, either to a retail location or to a consumer's door. So if you think about the supply chain, as it is, and how many people are along the way of that chain, and how many people are involved, just to get one package to your door. relationships do matter. I was recently at TPM. And there the mantra of the conference was relationships matter. And it was bringing people back together, right, bringing people back together, bringing people back in person to really kick start those relationships. Again, we've kept some relationships going through zoom and different things like that. But the relationships really matter to a successful supply chain. And when you think about, you know, some of the other things that we're thinking about in the supply chain as well, which is diversity and inclusion and sustainability, relationships matter for those to be executed. And for us to all come together and collaborate, which I always say collaboration is the future of business. And for those audio only, I have a sign behind me. And that's what I'm pointing to. And so that collaboration, that relationship is really important for...

How will HB22-1259 impact Colorado families living in extreme poverty?

When kids experience extreme poverty, it can have lifelong impacts on their health and well-being. That is why it is critical we take steps to help support families who are living far below the federal poverty level. House Bill 22-1259 will make changes to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program (TANF), known here as Colorado Works, so that it is responsive to the needs of our families and our changing economic landscape. By increasing basic cash assistance payments, improving outreach and engagement around the program, and creating a smoother ramp to economic security for TANF recipients, this bill will ensure that all families can meet their basic needs and live happy, healthy lives.  Welcome back to The West Steps. This week, we are excited to have an in-depth conversation on one of the most consequential policies at the legislature this year: House Bill 22-1259. Sarah Barnes, Manager of Special Policy Initiatives at the Colorado Children's Campaign, joins us for an overview of the bill and the impact it would have on families living in extreme poverty. Sarah discusses the ways in which the current TANF program is failing the families that depend on it, and how HB22-1259 would enact to fix our TANF statute's outdated provisions. Basic cash assistance is one of the most targeted ways to lift families out of poverty, and it is essential that structural changes are made to ensure this program is accessible to the families that need it.  To follow this bill and its journey through the legislature, subscribe to KidsFlash and look out for our weekly Capitol Updates. In Colorado, a family with two children must make less than $421 per month to qualify for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Therefore, the level of poverty a family must experience to access this program is too low for it to truly help families achieve economic security. In addition, TANF payments do not adjust proportionally to inflation. The payments families receive are worth far less today than they were in 1996 when the program began. Colorado needs to take steps to ensure TANF better serves the families that need it. In doing so, we can help place families on the path to economic prosperity and ensure children have the resources they need to thrive. On this week's episode of The West Steps, we gain firsthand insight about the changes needed to help TANF best support the Colorado families that need it. We are joined by Sarah Barnes, Manager of Special Policy Initiatives at the Colorado Children's Campaign; and three members of the Clayton Early Learning team: Coressia Sanders, a former TANF recipient and Continuous Learning and Data Coach; Kayla Frawley, Manager of Policy and Advocacy, and Ealasha Vaughner, mother of two and Community Ambassador Coordinator . Our discussion centers around the many obstacles families face in accessing TANF. With TANF legislation soon to be introduced at the state Capitol, we also hear about the important steps advocates are taking to elevate the voices of TANF recipients in the policy making process to ensure the program changes in a way that better serves families. Interested in learning more about the work of the TANF coalition? Maximum efficiency navigation decreasing traffic and congestion, safety features that drastically reduce collisions with other cars, bikes, or pedestrians, and an electric-first approach that lowers greenhouse gas emissions. But as today's guest asserts, on the back of her extensive research the implications of a huge increase in autonomous vehicles on our streets aren't rosy by default. Sarah Barnes works on the micro-mobility team at Lyft, and has published a variety of works that document the expected implications of more autonomous vehicles in major metropolitan areas— implications that are good, bad, and ugly. Sarah argues that without a serious focus on three transport revolutions—making transport shared, electric, AND autonomous, congestion and pollution could be here to stay. Sarah walks me through what the various implications are, and how local governments and AI practitioners can partner on policy and technology to create a future that works for everyone.

On the evening of Tuesday, 12th July 1910, Margaret Taylor, proprietor of number 29 Back Bank Terrace, upon noticing a terrible smell coming from somewhere within her house, would make a shocking discovery. After wandering around from room-to-room to find the cause of the smell, Mrs. Taylor would eventually make her way down into the basement. In there she spotted an array of items, from clothing to furniture that had been left behind by a previous tenant. After rummaging around for a short time, she came across a small tin-box. The smell at this point had gotten much stronger and it seemed to be coming from within the box. Curious as to what was inside, she managed to break it open. Recoiling from the odious smell that instantly escaped from the box, Mrs. Taylor, cupping her nose and mouth with one hand, leant back over and peered inside. What she found inside the tin was a cardboard box, and inside that and wrapped in a dark blue coloured cloth and clothed in a white nightgown, were the feet of a young baby that peered through. Horrified at the discovery, Mrs. Taylor immediately left the basement and went into town to inform the police of her find. Quickly, Sergeant Walker made his way to number 29 and after investigating the basement, he took possession of the tin box, lifting it onto a table top. Opening it, Walker discovered the remains of a baby, but with decomposition in such an advanced state, he was unable to determine the sex. The following morning, on Wednesday, 13th July, Dr. Harrison performed a postmortem ready for the inquest that would take place that afternoon. Meanwhile, Sergeant Walker whom had spoken to Mrs. Taylor had made his way over to Loveclough, a small village in nearby Rawtenstall and based on information given to him, he called at the home of Sarah Hannah Barnes. Informing Sarah of the tin-box being found and after asking if she owned such an item, Sarah asked him, "Do you think they will send me to prison?" Sergeant Walker, obviously could never answer her question and instead asked if she would accompany him back to Haslingden so she could attend the inquest that afternoon. In front of Mr. Robinson, the inquest into the body of the baby being found at number 29 Back Bank Terrace would take place in the Haslingden Town Hall. First up would be Sergeant Walker who would tell of when Mrs. Taylor first approached him about the finding of the tin-box in the basement and how he took possession of it. He would also mention his subsequent visit to Loveclough to speak with Sarah Barnes. Next up, Mrs Taylor would take to the stand. Along with detailing the events that took place the previous day, she would mention of how Sarah Barnes had been a neighbour living next door to her and her husband William from Christmas until around the end of February. When leaving, Sarah had asked Mrs. Taylor if she could leave behind some items of furniture which she would remove at a later date to which Mrs. Taylor had agreed too. She had known Sarah for around twelve-months and saw no reason to deny her request. A couple of months passed and Sarah then returned to number 29 on Saturday 9th July, to drop off some more items, such as a flock bed and some bed clothes as well as a tin box. Two days later and on Monday 11th July, Sarah returned, this time to pick up some items.

Transforming the Shipper, Freight Forwarder Relationship with Sarah Barnes-Humphrey Sarah Barnes-Humphrey and Joe Lynch discuss transforming the shipper, freight forwarder relationship. As the founder of a company designed to connect shippers and freight forwarders, Sarah understands the dynamics of the shipper, freight forwarder relationship. About Sarah Barnes-Humphrey Sarah Barnes-Humphrey is a logistician turned supply chain marketer, passionate about bringing stories to life in an industry that has traditionally been about stats and numbers. As the host of the popular Let’s Talk Supply Chain Podcast (LTSC) blog and The SC, Supply Chain TV on YouTube, Barnes-Humphrey helps tell the stories and bring awareness to brands and hot topics in the industry, which includes her infamous Women in Supply Chain series. Recently named Top 100 most influential women leaders in Supply Chain (global) and Top 100 most influential Women in Canadian Supply Chain, Barnes-Humphrey has spent the past 20 years in logistics and supply chain and has now co-founded Shipz, a new technology platform encompassing all of her experience and knowledge in the supply chain bringing innovative, collaboration to the shipper and forwarder experience. Shipz Shipz is an online transportation booking platform for international freight movements and a supply chain ecosystem. Shipz helps importers and exporters move their products easily and more efficiently to grow their business outside their borders. Many mid-sized companies do import and export, and want to work with forwarders, but they are limited by the current process. Meanwhile, forwarders are equally strained by the amount of “free” work they do, and by being treated like a bank. Shipz is a neutral bid-and-ship platform for mid-market shippers, providing forwarders with a safe space to stay in the ring. Let’s Talk Supply Chain Let’s Talk Supply Chain is one of the Top supply chain podcasts and blogs on the market, In both, the podcast and the blog, you will learn about best practices, changes in the industry, and “hot topics” surrounding Supply Chain. Listeners have will hear from amazing thought leaders, women in supply chain, and disruptors in the industry. Key Takeaways: Transforming the Shipper, Freight Forwarder Relationship Small and Mid-Market Shippers and Freight Forwarders Struggle with the Quoting Process The relationship between small and mid-market shippers and freight forwarders is often strained. Small and mid-market shippers who are importing and exporting goods typically don't have the resources, volumes, and expertise of larger shippers so they require extra support from freight forwarders. Freight forwarders often find themselves spending additional time on smaller accounts and making less money. Small and mid-market shippers often need a freight quote as part of their sales quote to their customers. Freight forwarders are wary of working hard on quotes that they may never move. Small and mid-market shippers can also be wary and untrusting of freight forwarders because getting a quote is complicated and the quotes contain lots of line items and potential penalties. Additional resentment from freight forwarders occurs when they find themselves submitting a lot of quotes and not winning very much business. An Online Transportation Platform Specifically Designed for Freight Forwarders and Small to Mid-Market Companies Streamlines the Process and Eases the Tension Shipz offers an online transportation platform that streamlines the quoting, booking, and payment processes while removing many of the factors that were aggravating for shippers and freight forwarders. Shipz provides shippers a benchmarking tool (business intelligence) for estimating shipment pricing based on average cost for that origin/destination. With solid business intelligence at their disposal, shippers have confidence when working with freight forwarders, plus they don't have to pester freight forwarders for estimated pricing. Shippers can also get a quote from multiple freight forwarders quickly and easily. The Shipz system compares the quotes "apples to apples" which saves time and money for both freight forwarders and Shippers.  Freight forwarders using Shipz gain access to serious shippers who don't neccessarily needs lots of quotes for their sales process because they have access to business intelligence pricing tools (price benchmarking based on average priced paid). Freight forwarders using Shipz quote on more business  and win more business because the system provides competitive feedback in a way that doesn't violate anybody's confidential pricing. Lastly, freight forwarders using Shipz get paid fast, because no freight forwarders wants to be a bank. “I believe that we're experiencing a national reckoning and in this unique moment, I definitely see an opportunity for Congress, but also for our local governments to enact policies that begin to address our country's greatest ills,” said Representative Alma Adams (D-NC-12) at a recent Wilson Center event on women, race, and COVID-19 in the United States. “COVID-19 has revealed what the Black community and communities of color have known for a long time—health outcomes are further compounded by systemic and structural racism. COVID-19 has exposed what women have known for a long time—gender inequality exists, it threatens economic empowerment, and it increases vulnerabilities.” “The pandemic has shown us in the starkest terms how wide the gaps are in health outcomes between Black and White America and between men and women,” said Rep. Adams. Black women, regardless of their educational level or socioeconomic status, are nearly four times more likely to die from preventable pregnancy-related complications than women of other races. “The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among affluent countries because of the disproportionate death rate of Black mothers,” she said. “Black maternal health in the coronavirus era is truly a crisis within a crisis.” “The pandemic has completely wiped out the historic job gains women have made over the past decade,” said Rep. Adams. Before COVID-19, women made up the majority of the U.S. workforce. They are highly represented in the sectors most impacted by the pandemic. Women are the majority of essential workers, and non-white women are more likely to be doing essential jobs than anybody else, said Rep. Adams. “The work that they do has often been underpaid, undervalued, and an unseen labor force that keeps the country running.” While there has been a positive reduction in women’s unemployment since the pandemic’s onset, most of those impacted are mothers. 41 percent of mothers, and close to 80 percent of Black mothers are the breadwinners for their families, yet continue to face wage inequality. “They're doing the providing, yet they're not getting the income,” she said. “We deserve equal pay for equal work. You know working hard is not enough if you don't make enough.” “We are finding that from the offset of the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an increase in gender-based violence around the world. For every three months of lockdown, there will be an additional 15 million cases of gender-based violence,” said Sarah Barnes, Project Director of the Maternal Health Initiative and Women and Gender Advisor at the Wilson Center. “As a survivor myself of domestic violence, I know firsthand how important it is that we keep working to pass and strengthen legislation to improve services for survivors like the Violence Against Women Act,” said Rep. Adams. “I see a tremendous opportunity for Congress and our society, as well, to pursue transformational structural change because the system isn't working for so many people, especially women and minorities, and it really is time to try to do something else.”

Chatting Sarah Barnes for this episode was an absolute treat. Barnes, as she is more commonly known in the industry, is a Freelance Deputy/Assistant Stage Manager. In her heart she prefers spending her time as a Deputy Stage Manager, but she also doesn’t mind picking up a props list and getting stuck into being an Assistant Stage Manager too. She explains to us what on earth all the acronyms mean when it comes to Stage Management, and what it is that each of those roles spend their time doing.During the episode we have a chat about how she went from wanting to be a Bank Manager, to ending up in this mad old world we call theatre; she impresses upon us the most important thing to have around during Technical Rehearsals, and we muse about where to get all the best gossip. It’s always a pleasure talking to Barnes, and this was no exception. I hope you enjoy the episode!

Sarah from Let's Talk Supply Chain and Shipz joined me for a great chat about how digital trends are shaping the wider supply chain industry, and how procurement fits neatly into that. We both agree that increased collaboration and the developing trend of both functions reporting into the same line can only be a good thing when it comes to better alignment of business objectives and delivering value to organisations. Supply Chain Digitisation - Sarah Barnes-Humphrey from Let's Talk Supply Chain 2:01 Sarah's story of how she went from the family business to Let's Talk Supply Chain as a stand alone full-time business and how this has spawned various spin-offs and sub-niches. 6:00 Is Supply Chain ahead of the curve with digitalisation versus Procurement? 10:10 We talk about the concept of a Chief Value Officer as Head of both SC and Procurement, and how continuity of supply and cost savings could be meshed into one overarching objective for both functions to deliver. This joined up thinking could drive benefits across the business through better alignment of objectives. 12:01 Procurement's lack of involvement in managing the spend of the Supply Chain function and how this total cost of operation is still quite siloed in many organisations, with often minimal procurement involvement in the supplier relationship management of logistics vendors. 13:56 How can technology help to propel Supply Chain out of the Covid-19 crisis? What types of innovations could be key? 16:05 Sarah touches on issues with legacy 3PL IT systems, and we talk about how a lot of 3PL and 4PL vendors don't have fully integrated systems across all functions and how this can lead to a data deficit when evaluating optimisation opportunities. 18:00 We talk about 2 possible scenarios to deal with increased supply chain volatility in future, and the different potential consequences depending on which of these approaches an organisation decides to take. 19:50 Will more statistical modelling become popular when it comes to considering total LIFETIME cost, considering aspects such as TCO, risk management, capex investment and impact on inventory held? What other technology is out there already which will be adopted much faster by organisations when we emerge from the crisis? 23:23 We discuss how innovation is driving the trend for larger companies to partner with and get to know innovative startups. The future will likely see more collaboration in this space between medium-sized companies and startups, rather than just large corporates, in order to ensure they don't get left behind. 25:20 How being forced into remote work is actually proving to be popular and is likely to become mainstream post Covid-19. 26:08 We touch on the remote work and geo-arbitrage opportunities that this could drive and how this could be of benefit to both employer and employee from a cost perspective. 27:37 Sarah talks about her new startup which helps to match SME shippers with ocean and airfreight forwarders, her goal and vision for the business and how it plugs a gap in the current market. Welcome to the The Voice of Retail, I'm your host Michael LeBlanc, and this podcast is brought to you in conjunction with Retail Council of Canada. This is a special edition podcast focussed on the coronavirus, COVID-19 and the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a business risk.   Beyond the human cost to people around the world, the disruptive potential to retailers in Canada is real.  At this early stage for most it can best be described as a “known-unknowns”, but for some retailers they are feeling the early impacts calling down sales for international locations, late shipments, missed buying trips and perceptible decreases in Chinese tourist-oriented sales in their outlets. In this episode I'm going to focus on the the Supply Chain Delays and Cost Increases.  For most retailers this is a 90day+ issue; the goods on offer made or sourced in China between now and spring at retail are mostly already on the water or in warehouses domestically. Continued delays however mean bottlenecks at shipping ports or air freight, both of which mean more delays and cost, including promotional plans and long-lead marketing programs (e.g. flyer production).   To help us get our arms around this I brought together three experts for this podcast.First, I welcome Frank Lavin, Founder and Chairman, Export Now back to the podcast to set the stage.   With decades of the most senior experience in Asia, including U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore and working in the White House as an undersecretary of commerce for Asia, he brings a unique and rare voice to the current state of affairs.Second, Sarah Barnes-Humphrey, retail supply chain expert and host of the most excellent podcast, Let's Talk Supply Chain.   Sarah helps us zone in on the retail issues and scope and scale of the issues.Lastly, Audrey Ross, Logistics & Customs Specialist for Orchard customer beauty, a Canadian based global supplier and maker of cosmetics with offices in China and with a global sourcing footprint, brings it all together and gives us a  day-to-day perspective dealing with this crisis in their work supplying retailers in North America and around the world. But first, let's jump right into my conversation with Frank, live from Singapore.******Thanks to Frank, Sarah and Audrey for being my guests on this episode.  Well  Now let's hit the highlights of the retail news in Canada and around the world with Retail This Week for the week of February 17th, 2020That's a wrap on this edition of The Voice of Retail.  If you liked this podcast you can subscribe on Apple iTunes or your favourite podcast platform, please rate and review, and be sure and recommend to a friend or colleague in the retail industry.I'm Michael LeBlanc, Founder and President of M.E. Sarah also created an internship program that resulted in hiring most of the students from the program once they finished school. The program included teaching students about the industry and special projects to be completed during the internship. Episode Overview: The supply chain is everything from purchasing to the last mail delivery and everything in between. It is not to be confused with logistics. Logistics is just the small part of that. It is the transportation piece. Sarah explains that they want to come up with a simpler way for shippers to be able to move their goods around the world. Sarah’s episode can be found below while Sapna’s episode is linked HERE. It is good to note that there is a big gap between accelerator and funding programs, especially in Canada. For startups, you need to be at a certain stage to be able to utilize the funding programs where sometimes it’s just not possible. The grant side in Canada is not easy to navigate. There is a big gap whether they will provide the grant to your company or not. Those were one of the many challenges startups face. Sarah explains with great enthusiasm the challenges and how to deal with them. Listen to the episode and learn Sarah’s tips on handling accelerator and funding programs. Learn also the difference between Canadian programs compared to it’s US counterpart. What you’ll learn in this Episode: Excited about working with other innovators in this space and how the players in the supply chain are responding to change Hard work and asking a lot of questions pays off. The courage to just ask opens doors that you can’t even imagine walking through. Get out there, start talking about it and ask people. See what their thoughts are. You’re going to get NO’s but you’re going to get YESSES. Most technology company takes a lot of money to be able to start Think about your board of advisers. Having an adviser who’s been where you are can help you save money with some of the documentation that’s needed especially on the startup side. On the accelerator side, make sure that you read the fine print and have a discussion with them about every single point why they should be taking a percentage of your company. Really make sure to ask questions and that you are comfortable with the company because again, you are giving away some shares in your business. This is going to affect potential investment rounds down the road Life is lived forwards and understood backward a quote by Soren Kierkegaard Everything happens for a reason.
