The last few years have been a particularly challenging time for the international law framework outlines at Nuremberg. The trial of the German leadership at the end of the Second World War, coupled with the creation of the UN and the UN Charter, codified a series of legal obligations for state leaders. It outlawed waging war or even threatening war. It held individual leaders as criminally liable for violating the rules of war. And it promised prosecutions as a result of these violations. While it had never realized its promise, the past few years, from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to terrorist attacks against Israel and Israel's waging of war in Gaza and Lebanon, to the Israeli and American war against Iran, have been a particular challenge to the so-called Nuremberg principles. So on today's show, we explore what these principles are whether international actors can return to their promise. [ dur: 58mins. ] Elizabeth Borgwardt is former Pozen Professor of Human Rights at the University of Chicago. She is the author of A New Deal for the World: America's Vision for Human Rights and the upcoming The Nuremberg Idea: Thinking Humanity in History, Law and Politics. The Israeli/American War against Iran continues. On today's panel we wrestle with the question of the war’s legality. In doing so, we reject US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s assertion that the US will fight this war with “no stupid rules of engagement,,” and his assertion that there will be “no politically correct wars,” and “no nation-building quagmire.” While he dismisses the importance of international laws on war, we do not. So, we ask, is this war legal? Are the tactics of Israeli and American militaries legal? Is Iran's response aligned with international law? The Urgent Need for Urban Trees

Journal of Biophilic Design

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2025 57:48

Cities face unprecedented environmental challenges, and it's no secret that trees offer multiple solutions: reducing urban temperatures, mitigating noise pollution, improving air quality, and supporting mental and physical health. So why then aren't we planting trees wherever there's opportunity? As Biophilic Design practitioners, we can help hold this door open to help explain why we need them and how to do it. Sue James is the Convenor for the Trees and Design Action Group (TDAG), which brings together individuals, professionals, academics and organisations from wide ranging disciplines in both the public and private sectors to improve knowledge and good practice to support the role of urban trees through better collaboration in the planning, design, construction and management and maintenance of our urban places. We chat through the challenges, the opportunities and also how Biophilic Designers can get involved and help transform society, health and ultimately our planet. One of the primary obstacles to widespread urban tree planting, according to Sue, is the perceived maintenance burden. Councils and developers often view trees as costly and complicated. However, TDAG research demonstrates that with strategic planning, tree maintenance can be minimal and cost-effective."If you plant the right tree in the right place, with proper initial care, maintenance becomes remarkably simple.” Do have a look at the practical guides TDAG have developed to help communities and professionals navigate tree planting challenges. If you are wanting to share the benefits of urban trees, which extend far beyond environmental considerations, learn a bit more about how tree-lined streets can benefit society. For instance they increase property values, reduce urban temperatures by up to 4 degrees, potentially save the NHS money through improved public health and of course the obvious one, create more attractive, liveable and desirable urban spaces.Grassroots Tree Planting InitiativesLet's also not forget the power of local people. There are many examples of community involvement, and you can find out about local tree planting groups across the UK who are already making significant impacts and get involved with, or support from them. These groups often achieve more successful plantings than official programmes because of their hands-on, passionate approach. So what if you're thinking about taking practical steps to support community action? Did you know that you are likely to have a local tree officer? Find out who your nearest one is. Explore community forest networks, engage with school parent-teacher associations, connect with organisations like Trees for Cities and of course use the online resources on TDAG and join their seminars which are free.A crucial aspect of Sue and TDAG's work involves education. Through her involvement with Teach the Future, she advocates integrating climate and nature studies across all school subjects, believing that informed younger generations can drive meaningful change.Sue is also calling for comprehensive land use frameworks that integrate trees and green infrastructure into urban planning. She suggests local authorities should develop clear tree strategies that provide developers with consistent, achievable green space requirements. As Sue says, “We need to bring people and nature together as partners, rather than antagonists.” Wouldn't it be amazing if everyone of us reading this or listening to the interview, did something to change our local street, village or town. We planted a tree, got involved in the local tree planting groups or even better when we specified, we advocated for tree-lined boulevards and amazing arboreal environments. They don't need to be perfect, manicured spaces but living, breathing urban environments where humans and nature coexist and mutually benefit.Every individual, community group, and organisation has a role to play in creating greener, more resilient cities.Resources like the Trees and Design Action Group's website offer free guides and inspiration. By sharing knowledge, challenging outdated perceptions, and taking practical steps, we can transform our urban landscapes. There's an upcoming election in Australia, and housing will be a big issue. Show host Gene Tunny chats with Fusion Party candidate Owen Miller about Fusion's sweeping housing policy proposals. Topics include eliminating negative gearing, taxing capital gains on owner-occupied homes, and increasing public housing. They also discuss ideas like charter cities, high-speed rail, and a government-run real estate platform. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Gene, please email him at contact@economicsexplored.com.About Owen MillerOwen Miller grew up in Sydney and has long been interested in science fiction, ultimately leading to the study of mechatronics (robotics & control systems) and computer science at the University of Sydney. After working in different software roles in Sydney and even dealing Blackjack for some months, Owen moved to Seattle to work on the recommender systems at Amazon. Owen later moved to New York and was involved in smaller startups, especially in hospitality. Although the start-ups didn't take off, this rite of passage involved less shielding from the real world and helped clarify the roles of the market and the state in the provision of essential aspects of life, such as software and social cooperation. In 2020, Owen started the Non-Human Party; a vision for an opt-in online nationality that would optimise the existence of robots and animals, in addition to humans.Upon moving to Melbourne in 2022, Owen became the Registered Officer of Fusion, with the hope of enabling Australia to reach its full potential as a wealthy, sustainable and harmonious paradise; a beacon for the rest of the world. He currently serves as Fusion's Convenor.Owen was Fusion's candidate for the 2023 Aston federal by-election.In 2024, he ran as a candidate for local council in Merri-bek (for the Bulleke-Bek ward). He will again be running as a federal candidate in 2025, this time in Wills. In 2024, Spotify classified Owen as belonging to the top 0.05% of Kylie Minogue fans.Source: https://www.fusionparty.org.au/owen_millerTimestampsIntroduction (0:00)Relationship Between Fusion Party and Pirate Party (3:07)Fusion Party's Housing Policy Goals (4:04)Comparisons with Other Countries and Tax Policy (6:19)Immigration and Housing Policy (9:09)Owner-Occupier Capital Gains Tax and Land Tax (12:53)Renter's Rights and Social Housing (17:16)Supply-Side Housing Policies (27:49)Liberté Account and Open Source Real Estate Listings (38:24)Final Thoughts and Wrap-Up (51:02)TakeawaysTax reform is central to Fusion's housing strategy — They propose reducing capital gains tax discounts and phasing in land tax for all properties, including owner-occupied homes.Fusion supports a major investment in social housing — Advocating a jump from 3.2% to 10% of housing stock as public housing.Tenant rights need an upgrade — Fusion argues for banning no-fault evictions and establishing minimum standards like clean air and energy efficiency.Livret A accounts could revolutionize infrastructure funding — A French-style citizen savings bond to fund high-speed rail and public housing projects.Urban sprawl isn't the answer — Fusion favors infill development and transport-driven decentralization over expanding city fringes.Links relevant to the conversationFusion's housing policy:https://www.fusionparty.org.au/housing_as_a_homeLumo Coffee promotion10% of Lumo Coffee's Seriously Healthy Organic Coffee.Website: https://www.lumocoffee.com/10EXPLOREDPromo code: 10EXPLORED Full transcripts are available a few days after the episode is first published at www.economicsexplored.com.

In the third episode of Satya Samvad, Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar talks to Shri Shishir Bajoriaji, prominent industrialist and political leader (BJP) in West Bengal, on the civilizational battle underway in West Bengal today. Bengal has been a civilizational pillar of Bharat since times immemorial. In the Mahabharata, references to Anga and Vanga abound. Hindu Bengali dynasties such as the Palas and Senas attained heights of glory with Dharmapala even holding an imperial court at Kannauj. After the devastating raids by Muhammad Ghori's general Bakhtiyar Khilji, which also led to the destruction of Nalanda, the Bengal Sultanate in Lakhnauti was established in 1202 AD, even as Hindu kings kept up a fierce resistance for years ahead from other parts of Bengal. Hindus in Bengal kept advancing their cultural and spiritual heritage. Raghunatha Shiromani, a leading Indian philosopher and logician, who hailed from Nabadwip in West Bengal, elevated Navya Nyāya philosophy to unparalleled heights under Vāsudeva Sārvabhauma's guidance. The Nath tradition in Bengal evolved with the influences Yoga, Tantra and Saiva-Agama traditions, the last of which had reached its pinnacle in the Pala age. Today, West Bengal is reeling from uber-partisanship, socio-cultural deracination, archaic endowments of the British Raj, syndicate politicking and appeasement politics. Be it Sandeshkhali, the cash-for-jobs scam or brazen Hinduphobia, the current government of West Bengal has reached alarming levels of moral, political and financial corruption. Shri Shishir Bajoria is a prominent Indian politician and industrialist. He heads the S. K. Bajoria Group, overseeing diverse ventures with an annual turnover of US$330 million, including specialized refractories and insurance services. Bajoria holds influential positions in organizations like the Europe India Business Council and chairs the board of governors at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2014, Bajoriaji is actively involved in West Bengal politics, serving on key committees and supporting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. In the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, he served as the Convenor of the election management committee, highlighting his trusted role within the party. Through his contributions, Bajoriaji has shaped both industry and political discourse in India, particularly in West Bengal.
