This week, we honor Martin Luther King Jr. Today's story uses three voices—a house, narrator and historian—and music to tell the stories of generations of people from a town in the Deep South of the US. Yes, it is a tale of bigotry and racism at the micro and macro scales. But also hope and determination to make a better world and a better life. It's a beautiful example of how ghost stories can change our own stories, the course of history, and our dreams.Anne Watson has been writing, in one form or another, all her life, most recently focusing on fiction. She's written news articles, book and art reviews, blogs, documentary films, podcasts, and for radio. She has two blogs, echolaliaredacted.com, which meanders through life's joys and sorrows; and countriesandcobblestones.com about traveling for a year with her daughter. Her writing can also be found on Canada's National Observer. Her first book,Thin Lines of Broken Time, represented by Anne Depue, is looking for a publisher. She's currently working on a second book. The music in this podcast is performed by Earle Peach, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and songwriter from Vancouver who directs choirs and plays in musical groups, volunteers at and hosts music events, pursues social activism, and is still actively involved in the folk music community. The voice of the historian is Tim Gould (my wonderful and helpful husband. He also wrote and performed the Kaidankai's opening music.)You can read "Built on a Dream" at https://www.kaidankaistories.com.Website: kaidankaistories.comFollow us on: Twitter/XInstagramFacebook
There are people you meet and you instantly know they are someone you are drawn to meet, know and learn about. Anne Watson is one of those people for me. After meeting her briefly at a wine tasting event, I instantly knew I had to have her on the podcast and this episode is simply delightful. She's a gentle force of energy with such a welcoming spirit. She's been stepping into a new phase of her journey, sharing what she's learned from losing her husband to cancer, being a single mom supporting her son's passion for music, and running three businesses on top of all the feelings, changes and newness. I'm so excited for you to meet her and experience a bit of her wisdom. Enjoy!

Find the show notes here: http://www.merrittonsa.com/podcast/289 Have you ever felt afraid when starting to step into a dream? If so, you are 100% not alone; in fact, one of the most valuable discoveries I made in the first six months of hosting my podcast was that every woman I spoke to said she feels the same. I reveal this juicy nugget about dreamers in a recent interview with Anne Watson, host of the Swayology Podcast. We have the most beautiful conversation about pursuing our dreams even when we feel afraid. She affirms how hard it is to figure out what you want to be when you grow up, especially as a multi-passionate woman. And she takes us on a journey, digging back into the archives of how I started pursuing my dream of serving women who are actively seeking a path on which to live out their God-shaped dreams. In this episode you'll learn about... My unspoken prayer in 2012 that cracked open the door of considering how to engage my creative gifts for a purpose I felt passionate about, The self-imposed bondage that needs to be broken so we can live freely in who God created us to be, and The challenge to stop hiding behind my podcast and go all-in to create a business that would serve women with big dreams for God's kingdom. I'm calling this episode a PodSwap and sending HUGE thanks to Anne Watson for allowing me to re-purpose this interview while I'm in content creation mode of another kind. How will you know and discover your target audience? In this episode, our special guest, Anne Watson, talks about the importance of knowing your audience and how you can help them through your own medium of communication. Anne Watson is a business strategy coach and the host of the Swayology podcast. She helps coaches and communicators think like a business so they can inspire like a boss by getting crystal clear about their niche and creating a transformational offer that gets results. She currently lives in the Dallas, Texas area. Connect with Anne and find out more here.
This week on Real Talk with Rachael my friend, Anne Watson, is sharing her personal story of body image and bullying. Anne is a business strategy coach and the host of the Swayology podcast. She helps coaches and communicators think like a business so they can inspire like a boss by getting crystal clear about their niche and creating a transformational offer that gets results. She currently lives in the Dallas, Texas area. Key Points from Our Conversation: After getting bullied about her nose, Anne had surgery but quickly realized that changing herself didn't stop all the bullying. Years later, she realized that what actually earned her the respect she was looking for was standing up for herself and defending her boundaries. Anne's core belief became that she needed to change herself for people to be kind to her instead of God's truth that we are valuable and loved as we are. A true change came when Anne changed her perspective to be grateful that her body had faithfully served her despite how poorly she treated and spoke about it. There's nothing wrong with wanting to feel your best, but it becomes dangerous when we feel we need to look a certain way or achieve something to earn the approval of others. If you struggle to exercise, remind yourself that it's not something you have to do, it's something you get to do because you've been blessed with the ability to be active. Try thanking your body today for all it's doing for you. When you're unsure of yourself, you go through life looking down for the next place you'll trip. But life is about looking up, enjoying the beauty in front of you, and trusting God that if you trip, you'll be okay. Let's Get Real Practical: What core belief has positively influenced how you see yourself or the world? What core belief has negatively influenced how you see yourself or the world? What does God want to replace that core belief with today? Connect with Anne: website | Instagram | podcast Connect with Rachael: website | Instagram | Facebook

What does it mean to “be fluent” in something in mathematics, and is fluency important? 3. What does it mean to “understand” something in mathematics, and is understanding important? 4. Please tell us about one of your favourite maths resources/activities. Why do you like it? 5. What do you see as the key similarities and differences between variation theory and Engelmann's approach to direct instruction? 6. Is the distinction between a “novice” and an “expert” a useful one? If not, why not? If so, how might we tell if a student has moved from being one to being the other? 7. [Ep 203] If you’re like me, you do a lot of writing and writing-related activities essentially for free. You craft social media content, articles for a blog, and guest posts as part of your plan. We do these kinds of activities to educate, entertain, and inform. We hope to solve problems for readers, connect with them, share our ideas, and build bridges. At the same time, we may be trying to gain visibility as a writer or increase reach into new audiences to help even more people. We might create a freebie to add subscribers to our email list or write articles on spec to beef up our author bio with stronger social proof. We write books that may take years to complete before we even begin to search for an agent or publisher—again, we’re essentially writing for free long before the first reader plops down a credit card. It’s a lot of work. Is it worth it? How do you determine if it’s worth it? What’s the Return on Investment As host Anne Watson interviewed Crystal Paine for The Declare Conference Podcast, they discussed whether it’s worth it to create “lead magnets” for every blog post. Crystal advised listeners to look at the time involved in making them and the results you’re getting. “I’m always looking at what is the return on my investment of time.”1 Anne asked, “How are you filtering what you think is the best place for you to spend your time?” Crystal responded: The ROI. One hundred percent the ROI. That is what I focus on. So how much time is this going to take me and how much money is this going to make me or how many new people is this going to bring in. And that might sound super selfish or something but that’s what I have to do, because I have a very limited amount of time that I can focus on every day….2 She continued: Mostly I focus on how do I serve my own audience well, and what are the few things that we’re going to change this year that I feel are going to serve my audience best. And that’s really my heart with everything that I do...I just really focus on providing content for my audience, serving my audience, building relationships with my audience, and trying to become better as a person by reading good books and sharpening my writing, critiquing myself on video and on podcasts and just constantly learning and growing as a person and I think that trickles down into everything you do.3 {beginning around the 24:00 mark} Is it worth it to publish a blog post twice a week and post on Instagram daily? Is it worth it to work for a year on a book that doesn’t have a publisher? Is it worth it for you to submit an article to a magazine where you may not be paid? Only you can answer those questions, based on how you measure your ROI. What are you getting for the resources you’re investing? Crystal Paine’s ROI As you saw, Crystal Paine is running her ROI through her personal values and goals for her business. She asks: How much time is this going to take me? Then she revealed the returns that matter to her: How much money is this going to make? How many people is this going to bring in? How is this content serving my audience? How is this activity helping me build relationships with my audience? How is this activity helping me become a better person? Regarding that last point, you may recall Crystal listed activities like reading good books, sharpening her writing and speaking skills, and learning and growing as a person. She said, “I think that trickles down into everything you do.”4 So investing time in reading a book has a good ROI if it helps her grow as a person or writer. ROI Is Personal ROI in business relates more to investments bringing monetary results or company growth. But you may calculate the ROI in a more personal way, as Crystal does when considering books she might read next or the few podcasts that she listens to. Being Commercial with Thomas Adalbert Thomas Adalbert has spent his commercial career developing products and businesses. In this podcast, we learn about his experiences, especially at Google who bought out one of the businesses he helped develop. He now sits on the advisory boards of 4 different companies. Corporate Thomas always found it difficult to fathom the big company culture. He put it down to back-channels. It was about back-channelling - here's an explanation of what Tom means... What is back channelling? (for the full article click here) Back channelling is the feedback which a listener gives to a speaker to show that (s)he is following, or understands what the speaker is saying. The term back channel comes from the idea that every conversation operates in two directions – the primary “channel” of communication comes from the speaker to the listener, but there is another “channel” which comes back from the listener. Did Graham Cause Tom's Hair to Fall Out? No. But this is what Tom said anyway. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Tom-Hair.mp4 Thomas set up The Preference Service - more of the mail you want, less of the mail you don't want. It was about understanding people's needs. The data deal did with Thomas and TPS and Royal Mail, which Graham had a lot to do with. FinTech - lead generation online Tom's next move was BeatThatQuote. Rather than forcing people, it was all about figuring out what people were looking for. This blended tech and lead generation. It would be Tom's 5th business. It was the first time when he went into the business that they would SELL the business to one of 3 businesses. They did exactly that. They had tee'd up these potential buyers as they started the business. The lesson was make sure all business partners know what your exit strategy at the start. Otherwise, you may have a messy divorce (like Brexit). When Google Bought Tom's Business He Had to Move to America Tom likes Seattle. It feels like the UK. They are humorous, quick witted, passionate and funky. A cool city. The city is international too, with its spread of big companies. He flipped on New York or Chicago and chose California. What was Google like? It was a bit like the film "The Intern". The Intern - Key Art Very exciting driving a business proposition forward. You could do anything as long as it made sense. Go away and do it. His tech director told him it was like the Roman Empire. The coders were top echelon, product managers are citizens and everyone else who are the slaves. As a commercial person, you have to acknowledge the tech people run the show, but they've not always carried the general public. So many products were wasted. Tom saw P&L, they didn't. Google Wallet a $2bn product was 'sunsetted'. Google Name The Google name got Thomas into the biggest of big companies right into the C Suite. Easily. His project at Google "Google Compare" came to a swift end in 2016. Tom is sanguine. They've spent more in fines than in tax. Compare was front and centre when it came to fines. They had a lot of backlash. Google just stepped away from the problem. It was sunsetted. The Price is Right Graham lost a job with British American Tobacco. At a place where they recording The Price is Right. The queues of people waiting to get in to the recording studio contrasted well with the hordes of BAT sales people who had just lost their jobs to redundancy. Tom also had a redundancy story when he worked for the Penthouse magazine. To say the least it was a pleasant experience for him. Advisory Board Member He has 4. British Pearl also. It is not a Non executive Director. It is helping without fiduciary responsibility. Listen to Anne Watson for the Non Executive Director podcast #86. Anne Watson hosts the Declare Conference podcast and we had a blast today. We start the conversation with undies and vomit, but I promise it goes up from there. Anne's story is riveting, from getting bullied in high school to finding God in her 30s through pop culture, and she shares how she recently quit trying to be holy. We talk about battling insecurity and learning how to be yourself, and then we share our Christmas fails. Guys, Anne is that fun friend you can talk with about anything, so listen in and lighten up! http://unexpected.org Quotes from the Show: "Can we bring back chain smoking...because I feel like that's calming." "I'm so tired of trying to be holy and look holy so I'm just gonna let it all hang out." "Whoever I am is just not a surprise to God." "We need a freakjob support group." Have you ever considered becoming a non executive director? Not sure what it involves, or how to make it happen? On this week's show we talk to Anne Watson. Anne is one of the UK's leading experts on becoming a Non Executive Director, and she gives us a great insight into the do's and dont's of becoming a non executive director. Anne's career to date. Anne claims to have lived a long time! Her first tip for having a successful career is longevity! Her starting point was as a head-hunter for 30 years. She was highly motivated to join the head hunting profession, because her husband and Anne had just bought a house and the mortgage rate rocketed, if you recall, in 1981. There is nothing quite like a rocketing mortgage rate to make you feel like you want to be a working mother! Anne ran a business and sold it to a PLC in 1998. This was very liberating. The sale meant she had made a lot of money, which allowed Anne to do lots of exciting things. Anne wrote a few books, she lived in Belgium for a while, she developed a few women's networks. Her clients also kept coming back saying do a bit more work for them too. One of these clients offered her a role. She became this clients' Global HR Director. Anne cunningly and instantly hired a qualified HR Manager. “to save her from running the business off a cliff and causing problems”. She had the most wonderful time. It was a global organisation, with factories in China, Mexico, Hungary and East Kilbride, along with design centres all over the world. She developed an e-learning platform for them so that people were connected. The business was sold, as it was private equity backed. During that time, Anne learned as much about how people manage at board level as she did about how to motivate, develop and manage a workforce of 2,000 people of 14 different nationalities. For Anne, the most intriguing bit was watching what happened at Board level. This segued to her current role at In Touch Networks. How to become a Non Executive Director with Anne Watson Head-hunting What should we all be mindful of when selecting people? It has got a lot more difficult. The internet. Now, when candidates are in front of Anne they are significantly more polished than they used to be. They have a lot more knowledge about how to answer difficult questions, how to present yourself properly. But, that isn't what you want as a recruiter, because the candidate has a lot of qualifications, lots of success, ticks against the right attributes etc. What you REALLY want to know is how are you going to behave when you are inside my business. Therefore, it is all about behaviour. Anne's best tip for anyone recruiting somebody is yes, to go through all the competency based questions, but then have a cunning array of questions that will indicate to you: How do people respond under pressure? Are they ready to share and help? How collaborative are they? What are they like in terms of their decision making? These questions will help you figure out whether they are likely to succeed for you and whether they will be liked. Anne likes to have a scenario. She'll say… 'Picture this, and then lay out a scenario…' What do you do? What steps do you take? Watch out for those who are calm under pressure. Emotion tends to step into the way of logical thinking. So how do you quickly respond? Give them a question where the candidate feels a bit of the pressure. It's slightly artificial, but it is better than saying tell me how you respond to pressure. The Operational Assessor training designed for interviewing new people joining The Post Office mirrored Anne's scenario approach by looking for Intellectual Application – the breadth of thinking through the scenario Imagination – the degree to which they founded new ideas to resolve the scenario and Practical Judgment – the way a candidate chooses between two alternatives. Often, people in recruiting are lazy.

In Shanghai, students are better at maths than anywhere else in the world. According to the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment, Shanghai maths students are three years ahead of the PISA average. That means a 15-year-old in Shanghai is better at maths than most 18-year-olds in the UK. And, 55% of students are considered ‘top performers'. Behind these impressive results is the Shanghai ‘mastery' approach to teaching maths, which assumes every pupil can be a maths master. There is no streaming according to ability, the highly trained, specialist teacher moves slowly through topics and does not move on until every single pupil gets it. And, so the foundations are laid for a rock solid mathematical understanding. But with criticisms levelled at the high-pressure Asian schooling system, where success is often underpinned by hours of homework and extra tuition, is the mastery maths method an approach our imagined perfect country should adopt? Based on the testimonies of teachers, parents and pupils recorded in Shanghai, as well as in a UK school that has adopted the Shanghai mastery maths method, the team discuss the pros and cons with the help of Anne Watson, emeritus professor of Mathematics Education at Oxford University.
