Continued from the previous episode, Aaron, Caleb, and Susan wrap up their discussion about family matters and how to weave faith and parenthood together well. We hope this opens up conversations in your own households about big (and small) decision making processes, how to be on each other's side even if you and your partner disagree, and how to love our children, parents, and spouses with the love of Jesus in the best and worst of times. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron sits down with returning guest, and brother, Pastor Caleb Dininny of [Little Creek]Church, along with Susan Murphy, Director of Communication for [Multiply]. Together they discuss the how, why, and who of family matters, as well as the TV show of the same name. From raising kids to raising the stakes on family life, from how we make decisions to how we teach our children to do the same, hear all about how our hosts raise their families in the light of the gospel as bold believers whose faith is inextricably intertwined with their parenting approaches. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Is grief…good? In this episode, Aaron, Jon, and returning guest Susan Murphy explore good, and bad, grief in believers, faith communities, and the world at large. What does the Bible say about grief? How did Jesus grieve? What should (or shouldn't) we say to people who are grieving, even and especially when we're grieving alongside them? We discuss how our own Multiply community recently grieved with hope over several deaths in the family, and press into God's word for encouragement, example, and through it all–joy. Once upon a time there was a van down by the river. A bunch of stuff happened and now there's a podcast! Aaron and Jon are back (sort of) to welcome everyone to Season Two of Behind Open Doors, a [Multiply] podcast designed to take you behind the scenes, discovering what it takes to multiply disciples, leaders, and new churches in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia and beyond. From current events to trends, Thanksgiving tables to giving thanks for modern technology (sort of), bi- and multi-vocational church staff to all-in mission trips around the globe, we're here to talk through disciple-making, raising up leaders, and planting churches in the best (and worst) ways and worst (and best) of times. Catch up on what's been happening in Aaron and Jon's personal lives, ministry, and paths as we kick off a new season of…well, lots of things.
To end 2022, Aaron, Jon, and BODPOD Producer Robbie reflect on the past year's episodes by giving you some insight into the processes behind the podcast, discuss their favorite moments, and maybe even a sneak peek into the future. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
This week, Aaron and Jon sit down with Dr. Mark McGeever, the executive director of Times12, for a discussion about helping the next generation, the importance of the Great Commission, and getting involved with church planting. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron and Jon sit down with Dylan Lebakken, a new church planter with the [Multiply]Family of Churches through [Little Creek]Church. We'll hear about Dylan's testimony as well as whether KFC belongs on the table for Easter or Thanksgiving feasts. Along the way, get an idea of how Dylan has leveraged his family background to reach the lost in his sphere of influence, and hear all the best stories of growing up with a sibling 10 years his senior as well as how the Lord met him in an (un)comfortable place but in an unexpected and unforgettable way. Join us for a meaningful conversation with a “real live church planter” about food, faith, and followership. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron and Jon sit down with Brad O'Dell, who is part of our [Multiply]Family of Churches in a special way, having served on the [OV]Church staff for a couple of years as Pastor of Spiritual Development and Formation and currently still assisting us with sermon prep, planning, and research even though he now resides in Middle America and wears even more hats. But does he wear a cardigan or a pull-over? How did he get from where he was to where God is calling him to be? What influences, trivia, and grace inspires him as he walks God's path and, sometimes, straddles the line between the sacred and the sarcastic? It's all in fun, and good faith, and service to Jesus. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
We reverse the roles from our last episode as Aaron sits down with Jon to help him share the narrative of his life so far, which includes a scary and traumatic health crisis at age 17, straddling the fence of a career in business or a career in ministry, the indignity of baby blue cars, and his commitment to “the end of stupid decisions.” Aaron coaxes out Jon's influences, inspirations, and ignition points of faith and grace in a life definitively and yet often confusingly marked by God. Jon reminds us that the Lord works in mysterious ways, but sometimes those ways include an immediate and direct demonstration of His power over our lives and purpose. All in all, Jon is a pioneer of new and impactful relationships. He discusses how he found himself as he made the decision to follow Jesus, and continues to tell his story in hopes of encouraging others to make the same intentional choice. In the first episode following our mid-season break, we begin a season of sit-downs to round out the calendar year. We're following a slightly different template, with some exciting bonus episodes peppered in, and will feature interviews and discussions about some people who are near and dear to [Multiply]. Here, Jon sits down with Aaron to learn all that God has done in his life through his story, his decisions, and his calling. Jon takes us beyond what could be Aaron's Wikipedia page and into a full-circle exploration of Aaron's coming of faith story. From an early attempt to fit both Christian and secular music into his persona to his current focus, which is constant and on-going, to keep making disciples who make disciples in healthy, committed ways, Aaron encourages us all to follow Jesus, read lots of books, and pay attention to what energizes you. Aaron and Jon sit down with Nic Lombardi again, this time to discuss the ins and outs—and ups and downs—of neighborhood church. Together, they define some important terms of church planting and founding and transport us back in time to India to revisit the discovery that God calls us to seemingly contradictory ideas that actually complement each other in ways only He can fit together. Thus, it was decided that the idea of the church both gathered in a building and scattered in houses was the model to which God was calling our people. Enter Nic with The Grace Collective, and a whole new way was born for [Multiply] to multiply disciples, leaders, and churches. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
In the penultimate episode before a short mid-season break, Aaron and Jon sit down with Nicholas Lombardi, founding pastor of [The Grace Collective], co-founder of Coalescence Coffee Company, and Vice President of Programs and Operations at International Cooperating Ministries (ICM) in Hampton, VA. The topic is lofty but practical, just as the name suggests: Business as Mission. But first, we have to set the stage; our van not down by the river in India has transformed into a barely-running car for sale in the warehouse district of Newark, NJ, where Nic learns some important realities of trading worldly ambitions for life as a follower of Jesus. Through his story, as well as those of our hosts and [Multiply] itself, we invite you to consider the founding of strong, practical businesses that create platforms and gathering spaces for new missionaries, or disciples, to immerse in the culture of a community, city, region, or people group. Through their commitment to a Christ-like approach to ministry and the global perspective of traveling to quite a few remote destinations, Aaron, Jon, and Nic were each in their own way able to ask “Why not here?” and “Why not us?” as catalysts to determine how to use their knowledge of missions to be on MISSION. Journey with us through the Bible, across the world, and learn how there are glimpses of Eden everywhere if we are just courageous enough to look. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron sits down with a special guest—his wife, Katie Dininny—to speak about their intertwined lives and her experiences as a pastor's wife. As the General Manager/Director of Coaster Coffee and a board member with the Ocean View Business Association, Katie discusses the call God has on her life and how she balances her professional responsibilities with raising five children alongside her husband. From being off the radar to along for the ride to all in, the couple discuss keeping it all together, feeling and being ready for when God reveals His plan, or at least a next step, and what caring for one another really means. Hear about how “seeing each other's hurt” and following a Brother Lawrence-type approach to practicing the presence of God helped Aaron and Katie realize that everything old was new again, praise the Lord. Can women lead in the church? Has anyone gone to the ER for hitting their head on a glass ceiling? If it's not about the title of pastor, then what are these questions really asking? Aaron and Jon sit down with Susan Murphy, [Multiply]'s Director of Communication, for a panoramic discussion of women…in leadership both in- and outside our churches, in the SBC, and experience a collaborative lamentation on the collective treatment of women in history. Among the questions and safe space for discussion and discourse, another current is buzzing: momentum from our [Multiply] Family Reunion this past Sunday, and–spoiler alert–celebration of the ways God is guiding and providing for our churches, especially through the Brothers and Sisters who are leading them. Settle in for a long conversation that matters, even the story about the time the van (that wasn't down by the river) almost parked outside the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets. For more information, how to get involved with the [Multiply] project, and a list of resources, visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
In perhaps our most important episode yet, Aaron and Jon discuss what it truly takes to lead…YOU. What is it like to be on the other side of you? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Being a healthy you is important for leadership, but also your marriage, your friends, your family, and everyone around you. So, what does healthy self-leadership and a strong EQ look like? And how do we set healthy boundaries as people who are expected to be in biblical community? Have a listen, let's find out! Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron and Jon welcome back Caleb and introduce Eric Sherwood (Director of Operations for [OV]Church, Ocean View Christian Academy and Preschool, and Coaster Coffee), all of whom sit down to trade the trajectory of past episodes for an exciting origin story: their own, as founding collaborators in the [Multiply]Family of Churches movement. Before there was a family of churches, there was a figurative van down by the river that was actually a Mahindra SUV on a loud, busy street in India. Before there was a collective in Hampton Roads, there was a conference in Louisville, Kentucky. And in all things, new beginnings often mean bittersweet endings. Rev up your search engines as we discuss the contextualized multiplication of a vibrant and bold people to bring community, unity, accountability, and interdependency to our neighborhoods, cities, and beyond. Part testimony, part road trip tales, part practical application of learned methods, but all heart. For more information, how to get involved with the [Multiply] project, and a list of resources, visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Pastors Aaron and Jon sit down to deconstruct...not their faith, but healthy responses in the wake of church trauma or difficulty. From a paradigm modeled by Jesus concerning Great Commission leadership to rebuilt Alfa Romeos, from addressing and resolving conflict to the non-endorsed music of Busta Rhymes, we invite you into conversations that matter on a meta, mega, man, and micro scale. Leaders will fail you. People will fail you. When disaster strikes, it's our response in the aftermath that can lead to true reflection, healing, and growth. Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron and Jon sit down with Pastor Caleb Dininny, Lead Pastor of [Little Creek]Church, part of the [Multiply]Family of Churches. You Are Gifted is a look into the gifts God gives us and how they manifest in the church body for the edification of all its members. Hear about current events through the lens of the local church(es) in Hampton Roads as well as about the struggles, strategies, and stories from a recent church planter. Learn about the three tiers of doctrine and scriptural guidance as they generally apply to what [Multiply] is about, two Georges who've influenced our hosts, and one (long) conversation that matters. Plus, more on the van (not down by the river) in India...who was in it and where were they going? Visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron and Jon sit down with Pastor Jordan Brown, Lead Pastor of [OV]Church, for a discussion on gospel fluency as a heart language and why that term takes us well beyond traditionally defined evangelism, plus the intentionality and distinctions of culture, and how gospel fluency and culture are interconnected. For resources and more information, visit us at multiplythechurch.com.
Aaron welcomes Jon Slenker, Director of Missions for the [Multiply]Family of Churches, to discuss the origins of the [Multiply] movement, the basics of how to be a good neighbor, and a little bit about vans, stuff by the side of the road, a pandemic purchasing theory, and more. Visit us online at multiplythechurch.com.
A brief explanation of what to expect from our brand new podcast. In Spring 2019, [OV]Church in Norfolk, VA, held its first [Multiply] campaign to help multiply disciples, leaders, and churches in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. Now in its fourth year, the [Multiply]Family of Churches is giving guided tours Behind Open Doors in pursuit of the Great Commission.
