Joel 1:1-20 The word of the Lord that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel: Hear this, you elders; give ear, all inhabitants of the land! Has such a thing happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers? 3 Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation. 4 What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust has eaten. What the swarming locust left, the hopping locust has eaten, and what the hopping locust left, the destroying locust has eaten. 5 Awake, you drunkards, and weep, and wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth. 6 For a nation has come up against my land, powerful and beyond number; its teeth are lions' teeth, and it has the fangs of a lioness. 7 It has laid waste my vine and splintered my fig tree; it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down; their branches are made white. 8 Lament like a virgin wearing sackcloth for the bridegroom of her youth. 9 The grain offering and the drink offer-ing are cut off from the house of the Lord. The priests mourn, the ministers of the Lord. 10 The fields are destroyed, the ground mourns, because the grain is destroyed, the wine dries up, the oil languishes. 11 Be ashamed, O tillers of the soil; wail, O vinedressers, for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field has perished. 12 The vine dries up; the fig tree languishes. Pomegranate, palm, and apple, all the trees of the field are dried up, and gladness dries up from the children of man. 13 Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; wail, O ministers of the altar. Go in, pass the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! Because grain offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your God. 14 Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord. 15 Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes. 16 Is not the food cut off before our eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17 The seed shrivels under the clods; the storehouses are desolate; the granaries are torn down because the grain has dried up. 18 How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep suffer. 19 To you, O Lord, I call. For fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and flame has burned all the trees of the field. 20 Even the beasts of the field pant for you because the water brooks are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

There's something truly special about how the blue-collar world steps up during times of crisis, and today, we're taking a moment to recognize that.Over the past few months, we've seen incredible stories of resilience and community in the face of natural disasters across the Carolinas, Florida, Texas, and beyond. It's a reminder that while not everyone in the industry may be doing things for the right reasons, there are countless people who show up, give their time, and work tirelessly without expecting anything in return. We couldn't help but highlight the coordinated efforts that go into these large-scale responses—whether it's staging areas being set up for trades to mobilize quickly or local companies stepping up with supplies and transportation. The heart of these efforts isn't just in the immediate action but in the willingness to stick around long after the headlines fade. This commitment often turns into life-changing experiences for those who help and those who are helped, showing that the blue-collar industry is built on more than just skills; it's built on a shared sense of purpose and community. We're also reminded of stories like those of our clients and friends who found their passion for the trades during pivotal moments, like witnessing the aftermath of major events and wanting to contribute. It's this sense of purpose that we hope more leaders in the industry recognize and cultivate, turning moments of crisis into opportunities for growth, learning, and unwavering support. If you find value in stories like these, make sure to subscribe, rate, and review. Share this episode with others who appreciate the grit and heart of the blue-collar world.HighlightsCommunity Response: We discuss the blue-collar industry's incredible efforts during recent natural disasters.Long-Term Dedication: Highlighting the commitment of workers who stay to support communities beyond the immediate crisis.Effective Coordination: Insights into the well-organized staging efforts that improve disaster response.Impactful Stories: Sharing real examples of towns rallying together for recovery.Leadership Reflection: Encouraging leaders to recognize the importance of their teams' contributions.Connect with us:Steve Doyle:WebsiteLinkedInEmailBrad Herda:WebsiteLinkedInEmailThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

Warning signs before disasters can often show up in nature or your surroundings. For example, if you notice animals suddenly leaving an area or behaving strangely, it could be a sign of an upcoming earthquake or storm. A sudden drop in water levels at the beach could mean a tsunami is approaching, so it's important to move to higher ground quickly. If you see cracks forming in the ground or hear a loud roaring sound, it might be an early sign of a landslide. Smelling gas indoors could indicate a leak, which is a warning to leave immediately and call for help to prevent an explosion. Paying attention to these signs can give you a head start in getting to safety before disaster strikes. "The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was a wake-up call. It showed me that even the best science fails without effective communication and proactive strategies to save lives." In this episode, host Andrew Geary talks with Ron Harris, Geological Sciences Professor at Brigham Young University, about his groundbreaking work in disaster preparedness. Ron shares insights from his lecture and nonprofit, In Harm's Way, focusing on how scientific research can save lives in disaster-prone regions. KEY POINTS & TAKEAWAYS > Proactive Disaster Preparedness: Ron champions moving beyond reactive approaches, using community-based education to prepare for potential hazards before they occur. > The "20-20-20" Evacuation Principle: This innovative rule helps communities quickly self-evacuate after earthquakes. By combining scientific data with simple messaging, Ron created a lifesaving tool anyone can understand and implement. > Science Meets Community Action: Through his WAVES team, Geoscientists without Borders, and In Harm's Way, Ron proves that bridging scientific insights with local leadership can dramatically reduce disaster risks. > Cultural Engagement: Ron has found powerful ways to boost community preparedness by collaborating with Indonesian scouting groups and integrating local heroes into disaster messaging. > A Challenge to Future Geoscientists: Ron encourages young researchers to align their skills with societal needs, demonstrating how scientific expertise can create real-world impact. He received his BSc. in Geology from the University of Oregon, an MSc. in Geophysics from the Geophysical Institute of Alaska, and a Ph.D. in Geodynamics from University College London, UK. Ron has worked for oil, mining, and environmental companies, for the U.S. Geological Survey, and with the governments of several developing countries threatened by natural hazards. Dr. Harris has taught at universities in the U.S., Great Britain, Oman, Taiwan, and Indonesia. He has been invited to make over 200 presentations, has 95 peer-reviewed publications, written books and garnered several research grants and awards. Dr. Harris' research integrates many sub-disciplines, but the common thread is applying geoscience to societal needs. He founded the nonprofit organization In Harm's Way, which identifies areas most vulnerable to natural disasters and helps community-based organizations communicate risk and implement effective risk-reduction strategies that save thousands of lives. Yascha Mounk and Amanda Ripley discuss what natural catastrophes reveal about human nature. Amanda Ripley is an American author and journalist. Her books include The Unthinkable: Who Survives when Disaster Strikes and High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out.  In this week's conversation, Yascha Mounk and Amanda Ripley discuss the pitfalls common to many survival scenarios and the psychological tools most helpful in avoiding them; whether the strength of one's community ties or improvements in forecasting technology are of greater significance in the statistical decrease in deaths from disaster; and why we still haven't imbibed the most critical lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic.
