Sermons from CityLight Community Church in Linkou District Taipei, Taiwan
The hope of the Gospel propels us to consider whether or not the promises of the Kingdom of Heaven are real. If not, do whatever you want to do. If yes, then the difficulties in obtaining the Kingdom of Heaven, as described in the Letter to the Hebrews, are worth any sacrifice.
Hebrews 12 encourages believers to endure through difficulties, because we've come to a Savior who is our only way to God
Hebrews 12:1 tells us to run the race set out for us. This week, we look at the story of Wang Mingdao, a man who did just that by always looking to Jesus.
In the famous chapter on faith, we find a succinct definition, an honor roll of faithful men and women in the old testament, and are told just how important faith is to God. But there is a deeper theme here of finding our way home that echoes one of the central stories of both Old and New Testaments. From the Garden of Eden, to the New Jerusalem, the journey to a home where we can be with God is our journey. And it means we are both pilgrims and exiles, and that means something for how we should live.
Jesus Christ, as the anchor of our soul to God, will come again to save those who eagerly await the coming of our great high priest.
Here Hebrews expands on the idea of Jesus as the new and greater high priest who brings a better covenant. In explaining this, Hebrews speaks to the priesthood and the temple as a "shadow and copy". This is important for us as we come to understand that the new covenant completes what was pointed toward in the old.
A warning and a promise. The author of Hebrews warns us to not harden our hearts to God so that we may inherit the promise secured for us by our great High Priest Jesus Christ.
In this episode, we dive deep into Hebrews 4:14-5:10, exploring the powerful truth that Jesus is our Great High Priest. Unlike the Old Testament priests who had to continually offer sacrifices for their own sins and those of the people, Jesus—fully God and fully man—offered Himself as the perfect, once-for-all sacrifice. Because He was without sin, He is uniquely qualified to mediate between us and God. Join us as we uncover the depths of God's mercy and grace in Christ, our perfect High Priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses yet remains without sin. Be encouraged to draw near to Him daily and walk in obedience, even through suffering, just as He did. Tune in and be reminded of the incredible hope we have in Jesus!
Hebrews 4 continues the author's stark warning that if we are not careful we may fall away. That may seem at odds with the assurance we find in the words of Paul, but when read through the lens of Hebrews 3:14 we see that our confidence and our need for vigilance are part of a whole. That is because faith is more than a modernist intellectual assent, it is a commitment that both demands and inspires behavior that reflects our faith.
If our destiny as Christians is a glorious world to come, getting there is not like buying a ticket on the HSR. Getting to our final destination is more like climbing a steep mountain, with real dangers. God's design is that we will get there if we climb together.
Why did City Light call a new pastor? What is the message that makes City Light worth listening to? These questions are answered from Hebrews 2.
The author is unknown but the message is clear: do not abandon your first love! In this message, we will look at how Jesus Christ is supreme above every aspect of creation, including angels, and so we should submit every good thing to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
As we think about going forward, we also think about what God has done in the past. This week, while we celebrate what God has done, we also want to pay attention to where God is taking us through listening to the founding stories of Citylight.
Prayer is essential but it can be difficult especially in times of disappointment and suffering. The parable of the persistent widow reveals three ways we can be encouraged to not lose heart and continue to pray.
For the new year, we will be looking at how our work, broadly understood, can glorify God. Looking to the example of Bezalel from the Book of Exodus, we see how any kind of work can glorify God.
As we approach a new year with significant changes, we have much to look forward to, and some difficulties to endure. What kind of vision will strengthen us to serve faithfully today? There is value in looking back, where we have come from, and looking forward, where we would like to go. But, our greatest strength comes from looking up, at the sovereign God who rules the nations and orders history. This is Isaiah's vision.
In the conclusion to our Advent series we go back to the prophecy of Simeon and discover what the love of God means in the Bible.
For the first week of Advent, our theme is hope. Jeremiah 29:11 famously promises a "future and a hope". Often, we misinterpret that as a promise for us, rather than for the Israelites in exile. But the promise of a future for them points to a new relationship between God and his people, one only made possible through Christ's coming and his death and resurrection. In the promises of Jeremiah 29 we see the hope of Christmas, through which God fulfills his greatest problem that we will be his people and he will be our God.
This week, continuing last week's sermon, we see that a life of faith always produces acts that flow from that faith as in the life of Abraham.
This week, we will look at Galatians 3 in order to see the basis of our salvation is, and always will be, faith.
In his opening remarks in Colossians, Paul repeatedly mentions knowledge. How he explains it, that knowledge is possible because we are delivered, redeemed, and forgiven in Christ. And it is through that knowledge - of God and his will - that we can walk in a manner worthy of God, bear fruit in good works, and persevere. And there are few better ways to know God than to be in prayer and the Word and to be at church.
Through Luke 10:35-39, we are looking at the failure of religion, the goodness of the Gospel and the urgency of missions.
In Matthew 28:16-20 we're shown that we serve a Great God who has given us His Great Commission with a Great Promise. We can be assured that He is with us always, even to the end of the age, when we're using our lives to make His name known among all nations, tribes, tongues, and people.
At the end of his chronicle, Nehemiah recounts three sins that have crept into the community that he confronts and tries to fix by directly addressing the incentivizers. Yet through his account we increasingly see Nehemiah's concern about his legacy - whether the fixes will hold and whether his efforts will be remembered. He repeats a refrain that is a reminder to all of us: when we are called on to do difficult things, we can trust that God sees and remembers.
Nehemiah 12 is more than just singing and dancing. It's a celebration of a restored relationship between God and His people, a new marriage. How amazing and good our God is!
Let's dive into Nehemiah and explore how rebuilding a wall transformed Israel's heart. We'll reflect on Israel's covenant, the sacrifices they made, the deeper motivations behind their actions, and most importantly, how their commitment challenges us today to align our hearts and actions with God's goodness.
As the people of Israel continue in repentance and confession of sin, the history of salvation is unfolded. The Israelites respond by a renewal of the covenant in writing. How would you write such a covenant if you were to be faced with this task today?
Nehemiah 8 records the beginning of a spiritual revival among the Israelites after they have finished the building of the walls around Jerusalem. This revival is centered around the Word of God and shows how sacred God sees the repentance of His people when they turn to Him in brokenness.
Nehemiah 7 details the list of people that returned to Israel. We often don't think these list of things and people in the Bible are important but we learn the significance of this careful detailing of records in this week's sermon.
In Nehemiah 6 we see how a man of God handles fear. Looking into the New Testament we see what Jesus tells us is the right way to think about fear. Today, we can use these two models to deal with our own fears.
Nehemiah 5 records the freedom God's people received during the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem under a godly leader. Jesus Christ's work provided the way for God's people to be free forever. This message has continuing relevance today.
In Nehemiah 4, we see how Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem respond to increasing external threats. The image of the people bravely continuing the work of building the wall while under the threat of attack - armed with sword and trowel - is inspiring, but is it applicable? While we may not be able to mimic how Nehemiah and the people defended themselves, we can learn much from what they saw to be worth defending and why.
We've spent an amazing 13 weeks diving into Ephesians. As we conclude, let's reflect on the journey: the mystery revealed, spiritual blessings, gospel unity, and transformation within the church. Finally, remember we are in a spiritual battle that's already been won, therefore we press into God's victory and engage by sharing the gospel. Join us as we wrap up Ephesians together.
Pentecost Sunday. What better Sunday could there be to talk about the challenging and life-giving relationships that form due to God's grace? For it is only by the Holy Spirit's power that we can live out the high calling that husbands and wives, children and fathers, and bondservants and masters are called to have with one another.
Happy Mother's Day! Chris Payk preaches on Revelation chapter 20 to see the importance of everything we do but particularly looking at what significance this passage has for mothers.
In Ephesians 5, Paul continues his warnings against and strategies for avoiding sin. But here his tone and purpose have changed. He is no longer merely warning against sin, but how curtain sins - those that are based on the false hope that we can construct our happiness with our own hands - can lead us out of light and new life and back into darkness. What we need is not just right actions, but holy affections - a love for God and joy in Christ.
Continuing our discussion from last week, Paul gives us several concrete examples of what it means to "put off the old self, put on the new self, and to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we've been called." This Sunday, we will explore these instructions given to us in Ephesians 4:25-32, and go over some Christ-centered strategies to help us to lovingly and humbly obey Christ. As we focus on the cross, the Gospel, and all that Jesus has done, we pray that the Holy Spirit would help us be mindful of what God has done, to be filled with gratitude, and thus, to be motivated to become more like Christ.
In Ephesians 4:17-24, Paul tells the Ephesians that, now that they've become Christians, their lives must look different. One of Satan's biggest lies is that we can "believe" the gospel without there being any real change in our lives. Paul shows that that was not what they were taught! He then details the beauty of discipleship - it's not just that our old habits and lifestyle are "put off", but when Christ begins His work of transformation in our lives, we "put on" a whole new self. We begin to become what God always intended for us from the beginning!
In Ephesians 4:1:16, Paul discusses both the nature of the Church - that we share a fundamental unity in Christ - and the purpose of the Church. That purpose takes the shape of seven different works of the church. We also consider what those seven works of the church mean for each of us as we use our gifts to build up and bless the Body of Christ.
In Ephesians 3:14-21, Paul is not just praying a random prayer. In fact, this is a transformational prayer that he himself personally experienced about Jesus. It was the encounter with Jesus that really changed his life and allowed him to fine life purpose instead of apostolic messages or sound doctrine. Therefore he knows this STRENGTH is what the church in Ephesus needs. Without it, there's no way he could endure the suffering and asks the Ephesians not to lose heart.
This Sunday, Chris Payk preached on the high point of the Christian calendar - Easter Sunday. We looked at the most simple of all Gospel summaries in 2 Timothy 2:8 and asked what the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead accomplished for all who believe.
This Sunday, Chris Payk preached on Holy Week, particularly focusing on Palm Sunday and Good Friday. We observed how Jesus prepared to go to the cross, endured the cross, and what were the results of his ultimate sacrifice.
In the third chapter of Ephesians, Paul adds some needed context. He explains not only the "mystery" of the Gentiles inclusion in the promises - as full members of the body! - and he gives an account of his place in pronouncing the nature of that mystery.
Ephesians 2:11-22 This Sunday, Chris Payk brought us back to the book of Acts to examine the origin of the church in Ephesus. This passage in the book of Ephesians lays out how the Jews and Gentiles were reconciled through the cross of Christ and what made the church in Ephesus such a dynamic church.
