In 1 Samuel 5–7:2, we see that God cannot be contained, controlled, or treated casually. The Philistines recognize God's power but refuse to surrender their idols, while Israel recognizes God's presence but forgets His holiness. Both responses reveal the danger of wanting God on our terms rather than truly longing for God Himself. Our idols often become exposed when obedience to God threatens our comfort, control, security, reputation, or desires. Yet the gospel gives us hope: because Jesus, the Holy One, took our sin and gave us His righteousness, we can confidently approach the holy God and live in joyful surrender to Him.
