Welcome to Season 2 of Exciting and New. This season we are traveling back 40 years in time to review the best and (most likely) the worst of movies from the year 1982. Join Jason, Andy, and Brian as they rediscover the wonders that 80's cinema had to o
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Stacey and Adrianne back on the podcast to discuss the 1985 comedy Summer Rental. John Candy takes the family to the beach for the summer, and he pisses Richard Crena off, so now they have to rumble beach-style. That's right, it's a boat race. This movie has some promise, but it seems to fall a little flat. Rip Torn and Joey (Whoa) Lawrence are along for the ride. John Larroquette appears for a second in an obvious plot point that got dropped and might have made the movie better. There might have been an issue with too many people with hangovers participating in this podcast (both on the screen and in the studio). Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome the dynamic duo of Stacey and Adrienne back on the podcast to discuss what they were up to this last week. Summer Rental is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Danny back on the show as they discuss the 1985 comedy/spy movie Gotcha!. Do you need to put a period after the exclamation point, if the exclamation point is part of the title? Anyway, Gilbert from Nerds is a college kid on the make in Europe and he hooks up with an American spy with the worst Czech accent on the planet. There is some spy nonsense after that and I don't remember much after that. It was kinda boring. We rip on the cast a little, rip on the movie a little, rip on each other a little. Even the most boring movie gives us some ammo to have fun. Enjoy the podcast!.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Danny back on the podcast to discuss what they were up to this last week. Gotcha! coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Connor back on the podcast to discuss the 1985 teen drama The Legend of Billie Jean. That's right, Dana finally gets her wish to do a movie she actually knows and likes. Helen Slater and Christian Slater (surprisingly no relation) play siblings on the run because FAIR IS FAIR!! Lisa Simpson tags along and drops an F Bomb, which is worth the price of admission alone. Billie Jean becomes a cult hero to the youth of Texas as they flee across the state avoiding the police and parents, that are WAY too involved with the police's official business. This was a fun one to discuss. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome back Connor to the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this past week. The Legend of Billie Jean coming this Wedneday.Due to a technical "glitch" the first couple minutes of the mini were lost to the ages. Remember kids, always charge your batteries. We join the mini after Jason and Andy discussed Legos for a few minutes.
This week on the Exciting & New Podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the show to discuss the 1985 comedy, National Lampoon's European Vacation. That's right, we are back on vacation with Griswold's (or is it Griswald? Maybe it's Greaseball). Clark and Ellen drag their kids to the old country where hilarity happens. And then it doesn't. There is some gold in this one, but it is a weaker entry in the Vacation franchise, which might be explained by the absence of Cousin Eddie. There is a Python popping up from time to time, but even he can't get a laugh out of this horse, no matter how hard he beats it. There are some very unfortunate fashion choices along the way, and Johnny is going to sweep the leg and send Audrey home in a body bag. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the podcast, as he refused to leave the studio, so they all discuss what they were up to this last week. National Lampoon's European Vacation is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the podcast as they discuss the 1985 "teen" comedy Just One of the Guys. In this gender bending comedy, Terry finds out that only men get the good journalist jobs. Someday soon, she will find out that she has entered a dead field of study. Hopefully she finds this out in time to switch her profession. They should do a follow-up movie where we find out what she is up to 40 years later. Just 2 of the Guys. Maybe her daughter needs to dress like a man to become blogger or win an election. See Warner Bros, I just gave you a good idea for one of these legacy sequels. Get on it. And enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Just One of the Guys is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana are flying solo (can 3 people fly solo?) as they discuss the 1985 comedy Teen Wolf. This movie stars Marty McFly, freshly back from 1955, with a strange side effect to time travel.... he is a Teen Wolf. This movie has the Michael J Fox charm for sure, but there just seems to be something missing. It might be the supporting cast, which is lacking compared to BTTF. But there is still a lot to like about this movie, and we all had a lot of fun discussing this one. Enjoy the podcast!
Jason, Andy and Dana discuss what they were up to this last week. Teen Wolf is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Dan back on the podcast as they discuss the 1985 comedy Spies Like Us. As we roll into the Summer of Chase, we get our first look at Prime Chevy along with Cuck Dan. Honestly how odd is it to cast your wife in a movie you wrote, but have her hooking up with your Co-Star. Weird, right? I guess even in the movie world it seemed odd to have Donna Dixon hooking up with a nerd like Dan Aykroyd. Anyway, there are some Russian in this one but the American turn out to be the bad guys. Just like last week, there was a difference of opinions when it came to the scores for this movie, but more toward the positive side. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Dan back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Spies Like Us is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Jim back on the podcast as we discuss the 1985 surreal comedy Brazi. This one was a divisive one (at least from the point of veiw of one person). A little too Monty Python for some, a little too batshit crazy for others. Robert DeNiro for some reason shows up. There's a Hobbit (or is he an Android) and Super Mario shows up. This move was a weird one. Apparently this is part 2 of Terry Gilliam's "Trilogy of Imagination". If this is what he is imagining, I feel sorry for this guy when he closes his eyes to go to sleep at night. Anyway, the podcast is just about as weird as the movie we are discussing. Enjoy!
On a very special episode of the Exciting & New Podcast, Andy is joined by Logan and Cameron as they try to find out what 8 year olds are up to in 2025. We dive into Logan's love life and listen to Uncle Thomas do a magic trick (riveting Podcast material). This was done because Cameron wanted to be on the podcast. Cam, I hope your dad lets you listen to this. It is rated PG.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Jim back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Brazil is coming this Wednesday
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike (first repeat guest of the year) back on the podcast, as we discuss the 1985 comedy Real Genius. This is our Val Kilmer tribute to the recently late star. The movie might not be the best, but Val is at HIS best in this one. Some of the 80s scummier bad guys show back up in this one as...scummy bad guys. And some random nerds from other nerdier (and better) movies are here as well. It might not be the best comedy of 1985, but we had fun discussing it. Enjoy the podcast!
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Real Genius (RIP Val) is coming this Wednesday
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Logan back on the podcast as they discuss the 1985 comedy Brewster's Millions. In this Richard Pryor vehicle, a way-past-his-prime baseball pitcher inherits an insane amount of money. But first he must spend an insane amount of money. John Candy is the awesome best friend. Stephen Collins is the child molester (in real life, not this movie). We all have a great time discussing how we would spend $30 million and agree it wouldn't be that hard. This movie holds up. Enjoy the podcast!
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Logan back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Brewster's Millions is coming this Wednesday
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Zach back on the show as they discuss the 1985 legal drama Jagged Edge. The Dude maybe or may not have killed his wife, and Glenn Close is going to do everything she can to find out the truth, including sleeping with her client. Robert Loggia (you know, R as in Robert Loggia) plays Glenn's seedy man on the street, hired to dig up all the dirt. Good cast, boring movie. You know we will put our Exciting (eh?) spin on this one. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Zach back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Jagged Edge is coming this Wednesday
This week on the Exciting and New podcast Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Brian back on the podcast to discuss the 1985 comedy Head Office. Brian has been talking about this movie since this podcast started, and we felt if we were ever going to get him back, this was the time to do it. Luckily for him, this trainwreck came out in 1985. Dark Helmet and Frank Reynolds lead an all start cast, but don't even worry about them. They'll be dead soon. This movie might have a laugh or two, but we were expecting so much more. But we got Brian back, and that is all that really matters. Enjoy the podcast (but skip the movie, free on YouTube)!
Jason, Andy and Dana drag Brian out of retirement to discuss what they were up to this last week. Prepare to learn more than you ever wanted to know about Korean soap operas. Head Office is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Becky (back) and Nate (first timer) to the podcast as they all discuss 1985 comedy The Breakfast Club. In this Brat Pack must-see, everyone that graduated college in St Elmo's Fire is back playing high school students in this one. We do a deep dive into the problems of kids in the 80s, like parental pressure, parental abuse, suicide, and cutting school to go shopping. The is an al time great, and we really had a blast getting a young person's perspective, as well as a bunch of old-heads takes on what it was really like going to school in the 80s. This was a great movie to discuss and we had fun doing so. Enjoy the podcast! As promised, here are the parts that were supposedly cut:-Carl predicts where the five kids will be in thirty years: Bender will have killed himself; Claire will have had "two boob jobs and a face lift"; Brian will have become very successful but die of a heart attack due to the stress of the high paying job; Allison will be a great poet, but no one will care; and Andrew will marry a gorgeous airline stewardess who will become fat after having kids.-In a dream sequence Allison imagines Andrew as a gluttonous Viking, Bender as a prisoner, Claire as a bride, Brian as an astronaut and herself as a vampire. In an unfilmed alternative to this dream sequence all the five kids imagine random things including cars, naked women, Godzilla, beer and fighter planes, and these things end up filling the room until Vernon interrupts.-John Bender was not going to walk to school in the original script. He was going to be driven by his dad in a rusty tow truck, and have a brief fight with him before his dad drives off. Bender was also tossed a bagged lunch, with his father saying "You are a waste of lunch meat!"-After Bender demonstrates "Life at Big Bri's house" Brian stops Bender, and corrects him with a much more pessimistic version of the skit. Claire then proceeds to act out her life before asking Bender to demonstrate his version. Bender's routine changes as well here. After Bender mimics his mom, he stops, commenting that "then they make me work to pay off the dentist for the teeth he busts."-The scene where Andrew and Allison are walking to get the sodas is extended to a point, where Allison pulls out a pack of cigarettes, and smokes one.-After getting the sodas, Bender shakes his can violently and places it among the five to see who gets the rigged one. Allison ends up getting it, and when she opens the can, all the soda squirts directly into her mouth.-After Vernon asks who has to use the lavatory, the five go to the bathroom. Vernon gives the boys two minutes, and the girls three minutes. Claire catches Allison in a stall eating a bag of chips, repulsing her. Bender mocks Brian for sitting down to pee instead of using a urinal.-When the group is sitting in the circle and Allison mentions that she can write (and do other things) with her toes, she was going to follow up with an actual demonstration.-Several staff members were cut out of the script before filming: Dr. Lange (Social Studies teacher who dresses oddly), and Robin (gym teacher). Robin helps Vernon on a few workout machines until Vernon injures his back, and she eventually visits the students while they are in their circle in the library. Robin initially replaced many of Carl's scenes, and Carl was originally set to be a minor character with only two scenes.-During a cast reunion in honor of the film's 25th anniversary, Ally Sheedy revealed that a Director's Cut existed, but Hughes' widow did not disclose any details concerning its whereabouts.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Becky and Nate (first-timer) on the podcast to discuss what they were up to this last week (with a small detour into the behind-the-scenes of the recording industry). The Breakfast Club is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome first-timer Shamus to the podcast as we discuss the 1985 action flick Commando. In this shoot-em-up, Arnold needs to murder just about everyone he comes in contact with, except Tommy Chong's daughter, all in the hopes of saving Tony Danza's TV daughter. Even though this is our 3rd trip into the Arnold filmography, this is the one that really started all the things we love about him. The one-liners, the close ups on this arms, his insane ability to avoid 10,000 bullets all flying at him at once. Shamus is former military (thank you for your service), and it is fun to get his insight into how believable it is to jump out of plane and survive and how one swims to an island in a speedo and then changes into the most heavily armed person on the planet. This was a fun one to discuss. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome first time Shamus on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Commando is coming this Wednesday
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the show as we discuss the 1985 dark comdey After Hours. In this Marin Scorsese directed love story to the seedier side of New York, an American Werewolf is just trying to get home after a terrible date, but just can't seem to pay his way back. Apparently in 1985, it was ok to leave the house in NYC with $20 and expect round trip service (and pay for a date too). This cast is deep, with a lot of up and comers (including Kevin McCallister's parents) and E&N fav Teri Garr. Scorsese aways mixes laughs into even his hardest dramas, but it's nice to see a straight up comedy from one of the all time greats. We all had a great time discussing this all-time classic. Enjoy the podcast!
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. After Hours is coming this Wednesday
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Anthony back on as we discuss the 1985 comedy Weird Science. In this Hughes-iverse classic, nerdy teens build a lady with a computer that wouldn't even be powerful enough to post this podcast these days. Kelly LeBrock is the lady, and she is going to show these nerd how to have a good time, or maybe get them killed trying. Bill Paxton is the jerk off older brother and RDJ plays the jerk off classmate of our hero nerds. What's the worst pain there is? Do you think Chet's grandparents are having a good time being catatonic in a closet? Who is this Gary character? This movie will anwer all these questions and more. Enjoy the podcast!!
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Anthony back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Weird Science is coming this Wednesday
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason. Andy and Dana discuss the 1985 comedy Mischief. We all emerge from flu exile to a rather bland comedy written by someone who obviously loved James Dean. Part Grease, part Back to the Future, and no where near as good as either, as we travel back to the 1950s to see Mrs Travolta naked. And there is the hilight of the movie. Spoiler alert. Enjoy the podcast!
Jason, Andy and Dana discuss what they were up to the last couple weeks while they dealt with the flu and a terrible Super Bowl. Mischief is coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana were visited by the Super Bowl flu and needed to take a week off from recording, so we have uploaded a 1985 episode we did a few years ago in tribute to the recently deceased Paul Ruebens, Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Hop into the wayback machine and hear how Dana sounds surprisingly like a middle-aged man, and we get a special guest in the form of Logan. Obviously this one was done with tears in our eyes over Pee Wee's death, but we still had a blast discussing this one. Everyone is feeling better now in the E&N studio, so we should be up and recording new episodes ASAP. Enjoy this repeat.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Adrienne and Stacey back on the podcast for the 1985 Rom-Com Desperately Seeking Susan. In this "knock on the head and forget who you are" flick, we are introduced to Madonna, the street wiser drifter, who attracts the attention of a whole host of people. And why not? This is peak Madonna, and everything about her in this movie is why she was smoking hot in the '80s. Plus, there are a few up and comers in the mix that are about to break big (and in one case, break bad). This was a great movie to watch, and we certainly get into the groove as we discuss it. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Adrienne and Stacey back on the show to discuss what they were up to this last week. Desperately Seeking Susan coming Wednesday.
This Week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Daniel back on the show as we discuss the 1985 comedy (?), The Man with One Red Shoe. Tom Hanks, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning. What could go wrong. This. This could go wrong. This movie is supposed to be a comedy, but it has few laughs. It's supposed to be spy thriller, but has no thrills and the spies are all generic garbage. We always have fun discussing these movies, even the bad ones, but this one kind of left us all feeling empty. We still laughed, but maybe not how the creators of this movie wanted us to. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Daniel back on the show to discuss what they were up to this last week. The Man with One Red Shoe coming Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Connor back to the show as we discuss the 1985 melodrama St. Elmo's Fire. Remember all those kids you loved in the Breakfast Club and the Outsiders? Well, get ready to hate them now as they have grown up to become self-absorbed, entitled yuppie pricks. This might be the biggest disappointment of all the movies we have done so far on the ol' E&N podcast. Demi, and Ally and Judd and Rob and Emilio, and Andrew and that one chick who didn't make go to great lengths to earn the “who is the worst person award”. Spoiler alert: They all tie for first. Anyway, just because it was a terrible movie doesn't mean we didn't have fun ripping it apart (and the hatred for this movie was not universal). Even the worst Brat Pack movie is fun to discuss. Enjoy the podcast!
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Connor back on the show discuss what they were up to this last week. St. Elmo's Fire coming Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mac back on the podcast to discuss the 1985 shoot 'em up action movie Rambo: First Blood Part II. In this sequel to the original First Blood, Sly Stallone is a one-man wrecking crew, single-handedly killing more Vietnamese soldiers in one weekend than the entire American military did in a decade during the war. Rambo is sent to Vietnam to rescue some POW's and fall in love along the way. What could possibly go wrong dating John Rambo? I'm sure it will be fine. We had a great time discussing this movie You will have a great time listening to the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mac back on the show discuss what they were up to this last week. Rambo, First Blood Part 2 coming Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana discuss the 1985 comedy classic Better Off Dead. In this John Cusack-starring vehicle, we learn that attempted suicide is hilarious, as our star nerd (who is also a great skier and pro sax player) gets dumped by some dope. He also doesn't realize there is a much hotter foreign exchange student living right across the street from him, being held hostage by Dan Schneider (art imitating life?). As always, Curtis Armstrong plays a great second banana, with the best lines in the movie. We all had a blast discussing this one, so please watch the movie first and then listen to the podcast. Enjoy!
Jason, Andy and Dana kick off the new year discussion what they watched over the holidays. Better Off Dead coming this Wednesday.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana kick off 1985 in style, as we welcome first-timer Ron to the podcast to discuss the all-time great Back to the Future. Ron might not know much, but he sure knows BTTF, and we tap into his knowledge in full and graphic detail. I could go on for days about this movie, but better yet, listen to the show and hear us ramble on for over an hour about it. Stick around after the closing music for a special message from one butthead to another. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Ron (in studio) and Anthony (by phone) onto the podcast to discuss Ron's life. This will be the last podcast of 2024. We have a very special start to the new year coming out New Year's day as we kick off 1985 on a high note. We can only go up from here!!
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana discuss the 1984 holiday slasher flick Silent Night, Deadly Night. This movie was a big deal back in the day for showing a Santa Claus serial killer, but by today's standards is kind of tame. It was banned around the world at the time, which, of course, only makes it more of a cult favorite. This movie has no cast and less of a budget, but it was still fun to watch and celebrate the holidays with mass murder. This is our special Christmas episode, and the last full episode of 2024. We had a great time this year discuss all the good, bad and ugly of 1984 and want to thank all of our guests that took time out of their lives to venture to the Exciting and New studio to bring their unique takes on the movies we discussed, and of course thank our listener for all the valuble feedback and downloads. 1985 is already gearing up to be tons of fun, with a full slate of classics ready to be discussed. We hope you come along for the ride.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Collin and Becky on the podcast as they discuss what they are up to this week. Celebrate our 100th episode of the year. Come back on Christmas Day for one more very special Christmas episode and then it is on to 1985!!
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Becky back on, while also welcoming first timer, and youngest guest, Collin, to the podcast as we discuss the 1984 horror, comedy, Christmas spectacular Gremlins. That's right, we aren't all Grinches at the Exciting & New podcast. We enjoy Christmas too. Especially when it involves crazy creatures committing mass murder across the town. This podcast was a long one as we all had so much to say about this all time great movie. And of course we discuss at length Phoebe Cate's insane story that totally changes the tone of the whole movie. So sit back, grab a cup of egg nog and enjoy the podcast. Just remember not to eat anything after midnight
