When we talk about The Naked Gun (1988), we're diving headfirst into a comedy treasure chest—one filled with absurdity, brilliant wordplay, and visual gags that just don't stop. This Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker (ZAZ) film, starring the ever-stoic Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling detective Lt. Frank Drebin, stands as one of the defining examples of slapstick parody. It's a film that has aged remarkably well, continuing to resonate with new audiences and reminding those who saw it back in 1988 just how funny an entirely ridiculous movie can be.Plot and Storytelling: Simplicity at its FunniestAt its core, The Naked Gun is a detective story—a genre that's been spoofed many times but never quite with the same flair as this film. The plot revolves around Lt. Drebin, a man dedicated to solving crimes but utterly incapable of doing so with any amount of skill or professionalism. In The Naked Gun, Drebin is tasked with thwarting a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Los Angeles. The story quickly evolves into a chaotic blend of police procedural satire, ridiculous missteps, and wildly inappropriate antics, all the while managing to maintain an air of sincerity, thanks to Nielsen's deadpan performance. The film plays it smart by not worrying too much about the intricacies of the plot. Instead, it focuses on building its jokes around the absurdity of the situation and the cluelessness of its characters. It's almost as if the ZAZ team were saying, “We know the plot's thin, but you're here for the laughs, right?” And laugh we do—from the first moment to the iconic final act at the baseball stadium. Whether it's a visual gag or a clever line of dialogue, every scene is packed with humour. The Genius of Leslie Nielsen: Deadpan PerfectionBefore The Naked Gun, Leslie Nielsen had a long career in more serious roles but found his true calling as a comedic actor in Airplane! (1980)—also directed by ZAZ. That film launched Nielsen's second wind as a parody star, and his portrayal of Frank Drebin cemented his legacy as the king of deadpan humour. The genius of Nielsen lies in his ability to deliver the most ridiculous lines with the gravitas of a Shakespearean actor. There's no winking at the camera or over-the-top physical comedy; Nielsen plays it as straight as possible, making the absurdity around him even funnier.Take, for example, one of the film's most famous lines: “Nice beaver.” Drebin says this with no awareness of the double entendre, but when Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) responds by handing him a literal stuffed beaver, the joke lands perfectly. This sort of naive, deadpan delivery that Nielsen mastered makes Frank Drebin one of the most lovable oafs in cinematic history.Supporting Cast: A Perfect EnsembleOf course, Nielsen is supported by a stellar cast, each contributing to the film's comic rhythm. Priscilla Presley plays Jane Spencer, Drebin's love interest, and her straight-laced performance brilliantly complements Nielsen's obliviousness. The chemistry between Presley and Nielsen feels oddly genuine, grounding the film just enough to allow the wild antics around them to feel even more surreal.George Kennedy, as Drebin's partner, Captain Ed Hocken, provides another layer of deadpan delivery, playing the more serious cop who happens to be swept along by Drebin's incompetence. Meanwhile, Ricardo Montalbán, as the villain Vincent Ludwig, brings an elegant, almost Bond-villain-style menace to the role, perfectly contrasting Drebin's clumsy crime-fighting attempts. Montalbán's role is particularly memorable for how seriously he seems to take his part—his dignity adding to the hilarity of the situations he finds himself in.Slapstick and Sight Gags: Nonstop and RelentlessZucker, Abrahams, and Zucker excel in their unique brand of humour, and The Naked Gun is no exception. The film is filled with sight gags that reward multiple viewings. For instance, in the opening scene, Drebin foils an international conspiracy while hilariously bumbling his way through a fight with some of the world's most notorious villains. The film doesn't waste a moment to make you laugh—whether it's Drebin inadvertently causing chaos during a press conference or his notorious attempt to sing the national anthem at a baseball game. One standout moment is the baseball stadium scene, where Drebin, disguised as an umpire, ends up calling the game. This sequence showcases Nielsen's impeccable timing and the film's mastery of physical comedy. Drebin's complete misunderstanding of how baseball works leads to a series of increasingly ridiculous events, all while keeping the assassination plot in the background. It's a perfect example of how The Naked Gun balances slapstick with satire, layering gags on top of each other for maximum effect.Pop Culture and Cultural Impact: The Birth of a ClassicThe Naked Gun was an instant hit when it was released, not just because it was funny, but because it tapped into something fresh at the time: the spoof genre had been gaining steam in the 1980s, but few films did it as relentlessly or as successfully as The Naked Gun. Its success spawned two sequels—The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994)—both continued Drebin's absurd adventures. But the film's influence extended beyond its sequels. It paved the way for other parody films, helping solidify the ZAZ brand of comedy, which had already been popularised by Airplane! and Top Secret! (1984). It also led to an entire generation of comedies that relied on rapid-fire jokes and visual gags, like Hot Shots! (1991) and Scary Movie (2000). Even modern-day comedy shows, like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, owe a debt to The Naked Gun for its ability to blend procedural elements with comedy. The Enduring Legacy of Frank DrebinThe Naked Gun remains a beloved comedy classic over three decades after its release. Part of that is due to its unique combination of clever wordplay, slapstick humour, and pure silliness, but it's also because of the character of Frank Drebin. In a sea of competent, smooth-talking detectives, Drebin is a breath of fresh air—a man who's as clueless as he is sincere. There's something timeless about how Leslie Nielsen approaches the role, never once letting Drebin become a caricature but always playing him with heart, no matter how foolish he seems. For fans of parody, The Naked Gun is essential viewing. It's the kind of film you can watch repeatedly and still find something new to laugh at. Whether you're a die-hard fan revisiting the movie or a newcomer discovering Drebin's antics for the first time, The Naked Gun never fails to deliver pure comedic gold. So, if you haven't yet revisited this classic, now's the time. Just be prepared to laugh—over and over again.
Paramount's reboot of the classic comedy The Naked Gun is assembling a stellar cast, with Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Kevin Durand joining the lineup. Danny Huston, known for his role in Yellowstone, is the latest addition to the ensemble. Neeson will take on the role of Detective Frank Drebin, originally played by Leslie Nielsen, while Hauser will play Drebin's partner, Ed. Details about Huston's character are still under wraps, but the film aims to revive the franchise's classic comedic style. Directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane, the reboot promises to capture the essence of the beloved series while offering a fresh take for both longtime fans and new audiences. Production is set to begin in Atlanta, Georgia, with a planned release date of July 18, 2025.

As a photographer David's eyes are his livelihood. His vision was everything, but somehow David shrugs it off, he takes it stoically, he has this lack of concern for any roadblocks. I mean David has always believed that he would achieve great things. I think that's why after traveling around the world to 13 countries at 18, he decided to try and make it as a commercial photographer. He started taking classes at New York's Parsons School of design, and subsequently tried to make it in the biz, but just faced rejection after rejection. However, obstacles are no match for David… he'd eventually strike out on his own as an artist selling his art to Elton John at one of his first shows. Now he has ten published photobooks, sells his artwork all over the world, and it's a coveted thing to own a “Drebin”. THis interview is wide ranging and we'll start with a little steaminess…
Today's show opens with NBC News declaring, after all of the evidence, testimony, emails, picture, SARs, text messages and more, there is nothing to see here when it comes to Joe Biden. They have decided on a bold strategy of not just ignoring the news, like many of their peers, they have become the leaders in telling us they see nothing here at all. This eventually leads to a comment former AG William Barr said to Kaitlan Collins on CNN. Barr said any attorney defending Trump should plan to find themselves as part of future criminal investigations. That is a stunning and horrifying comment to hear from not just an attorney, but the former Attorney General of the United States of America! I already made the case they are criminalizing the First Amendment and now they are telling attorneys, if you choose to defend the “wrong” clients (as determined by the state), you could be committing a criminal act yourself. On the subject of criminal act, Alan Dershowitz says Special Prosecutor Jack Smith broke the law by intentionally leaving out exculpatory evidence when he made his case to the D.C. Grand Jury. In his mind, that should mean the case bypasses the local judge and goes straight to the Supreme Court of the United States. I then spend a moment discussing mail-in ballot fraud and how easy it is to commit. I remind everyone, it's not about adding millions of ballots across the nation, but a few thousand in a handful of key battleground states. And, to go with this, I just happen to have a story of how an elections forensics team said they believe upwards of 34,000 ballots in Wayne County, Michigan (Detroit), are illegal. But, I guess just stating that aloud, I have committed a felony per the standards set forth by Jack Smith. Victor Davis Hanson put out a piece entitled, “Two sets of laws for two Americas.” I think he has a valid argument. It goes along with the two-tiered system I've been discussing for the whole of the Biden regime. When we compare identical charges or circumstances, we definitely have one set of laws for the Left and a different set for the Right. In honor of all Jack Smith is doing to protect the Biden Crime Family and the Left's effort to destroy the Bill of Rights, we turn to comedian Jim Gossett who brings us a song called, “Jack Smith to the Rescue. As we head into the weekend, I do end with three ridiculous news items for your laughter and enjoyment. NBC Senior White House Correspondent Kelly O'Donnell tried to be snarky in a Twitter post about Donald Trump's plane needing to wait to taxi off the runway. Epic fail. Next, The reverend Al Sharpton tried to play righteous historian, stating our esteemed Founding Fathers, like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, would never even consider overthrowing the government. Anyone want to tell him? And, finally, we get a brand new installment of Deep Thoughts with VP Kamala Harris. In her latest version of word salad, she mixes up a doozy as only she can conjure. In a room of 8-year-olds, she is the reigning genius. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. This week we delve into the journey and experiences of David Drebin. From discovering a passion for photography in the 90s to pursuing opportunities and challenges in New York City, David realized that the journey itself is more important than any destination. We explore David's struggles with the business side of art and the challenges that creatives face in being their own biggest critics. David opens up about impostor syndrome, comparison, and the fear of vulnerability that many people experience. He shares his approach to balancing authenticity and creating personas in the social media world and how he navigates the fine line between creating art he loves and art that sells well. We learn about David's alter ego, his belief in self-advocacy, and his journey of betting on himself. The episode also touches on overcoming insecurity in showing one's work and the importance of letting things flow naturally in the creative process. Hosted by Bob Gentle, this episode promises an insightful conversation with a talented artist who has successfully built and marketed his personal brand.About DavidDavid Drebin is a multidisciplinary artist, working in various art forms, producing limited edition works including Photographs, Lightboxes, Neon light Installations, Sculptures, and Etchings on Glass. In 2005, Drebin had his first solo exhibition at Camera Work in Berlin. This was followed by his first illustrated book entitled “Love and Other Stories”.Reflections on David's artwork:“Drebin's photographs are epic, dramatic, and, above all, cinematic and have been collected around the world. In a unique and opulent way, Drebin stages femme fatales against the gigantic backdrops of cities such as Hong Kong, New York, and Paris. The panorama of the big cities, which, due to their format, are a tribute to cinema, serve as cinematic settings. "In art, as in life, everything changes and everything ends. Yet, the moments between are what truly count." - David Drebin Art, technology, and the human condition – the kaleidoscope through which we view our lives – can turn unexpectedly to offer fresh patterns of insight. My recent dialogue with renowned artist David Drebin yielded such transformative observations. Our dynamic exchange revealed timeless wisdom wrapped within the threads of contemporary life, suggesting new ways of connecting, creating, and confronting the evolving landscape of our collective future. David Drebin's persona as an artist is as fascinating as his compelling works. In his “character,” he safeguards his authenticity and elicits entertainment from interactions with others, reflecting a cunning commentary on the ubiquitous self-focus in our modern society. He transcends this self-centricity, illustrating the power of empathy and active listening to enrich human connections. Drebin's photography is a distinct blend of truth and imagination. His signature method involves capturing the untold stories resonating in the moments before and after an image. Coupled with his relentless pursuit of truth, his art becomes a riveting dialogue on the human experience. Reinforcing his philosophy, Drebin shares, "I prefer to understand others than be understood." It speaks to his commitment to empathetic connections, proposing that authentic love and growth emerge from comprehending others' realities. This is closely tied to his appreciation for being underestimated, as he believes it provides an unanticipated edge, allowing for startling outcomes and novel paths of artistic expression. He vividly captures life as a series of moments. His artistic perspective intertwines with the journey of life itself, appreciating the beauty in transitions as much as in peak events. Concurrently, he sees the advent of AI technologies – or as he playfully calls them, "drebinologies" – as another transition, another moment before a photographic image, suggesting the vast, untapped potential in the realm of artistic expression. Even as he acknowledges the inevitability of change and eventual endings, Drebin urges us to manage our energies wisely. He cautions against the hollowness of victory in arguments, underlining the need for understanding over ego-driven debates. His view of success echoes the impermanence he perceives in all things, and he proposes that success is a continuous journey rather than a destination, requiring discipline and patience. Surely you've heard of Leslie Nielsen. Surely you've seen some of the more than 200 movies he's been in. Surely you think he was one of the funniest actors ever. Jovial Jay and Shua look back on the memorable roles of this talented man. Listen in to Enjoy Stuff and don't call me Shirley. Leslie Nielsen spent years trying to be a leading man in a number of dramatic movies with limited success. But then a lucky casting in the 1980 movie Airplane! as Dr. Rumack put him on a completely different path. After that, he became part of some of the funniest roles in history. Come along with us as we celebrate the career of a legend. Enjoy Movies! Leslie William Nielsen was born in 1926 in Canada. His father was a Canadian Mountie and his brother eventually became the Deputy Prime Minister. But Leslie caught the acting bug from a famous uncle and began his career acting on a wide variety of TV shows. Eventually he was cast as the dashing captain in the 1956 sci-fi movie Forbidden Planet. This first role didn't necessarily start a lucrative career, but it did give him his start in movies. But he also continued some TV roles, such as the lead character in Disney's Swamp Fox series. The manly actor played the Captain of a doomed cruise ship in The Poseidon Adventure and this is what caught the eye of the Zucker brothers. When the Zuckers were creating Airplane! in 1980, they wanted a cast of dramatic actors that had been in disaster movies. Nielsen fit that bill. He played Dr. Rumack, who took care of the sick passengers, described how the illness progressed with vivid details, and inspired Ted Stryker with tales of George Zip. This breakout role dictated the rest of his career as he now played some of the zaniest characters ever created, most notably Lieutenant Frank Drebin. Drebin was the bumbling but dedicated detective of Police Squad, a special division of the Police Department. The unlikely hero made his debut in the short-lived TV series Police Squad, but really became successful in the Naked Gun movies. After that, Nielsen made dozens of wacky comedies and spoofs and set the bar high for comedians after him. Especially when it comes to giving interviews and controlling bodily functions. Are you a fan of Leslie Nielsen? Do you use his many movie quotes on a daily basis? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Don't call me Shirley” will get a special mention on the show. What starts out as a light-hearted palate cleanse quickly becomes more than Sean and Cody bargained for as they seek to lighten the mood with a classic Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker slapstick comedy. In The Naked Gun 2½, dimwitted Police Squad detective Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) bumbles into a plot where evil White House Chief of Staff John Sununu (Peter Van Norden) is trying to rig George Bush's environmental policy so fossil fuel fat cats like the dapperly mustachioed Quentin Hapsburg (Robert Goulet) can keep killing the planet for profit. But with Drebin, Ed and Nordberg on the case, are the oily baddies finally about to meet their Waterloo? Environmental issues discussed include the evolution of climate change denial as official U.S. policy, the consequences of the George H.W. Bush presidency, the cultural resonance of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster, and the influence of fossil fuel industry lobby groups on public opinion. Why did John Sununu hate science so much? How did tobacco company shills and defense analysts pushing beam weapons to Ronald Reagan in the ‘80s prime the pump for the rise of global warming denialism? What was the most embarrassing oil company commercial of all time? Was Hazelwood really drunk when the Exxon Valdez crashed into that reef, or was that an urban myth? How do you stretch an 85-minute comedy into three excruciating hours of television? How did Priscilla Presley get into Scientology? Is The Sound of Music really a Christmas movie? Does anybody remember who Mel Tormé was? Why is this film so damned depressing and enraging? All of these questions are ready to be taken downtown and interrogated in this episode of Green Screen. Earning his star at the age of 54, Leslie Nielsen began his career as a dramatic actor, taking on only serious roles, but earning little fame. Then, the movie "Airplane!" came calling, and Leslie's career changed forever.
