Hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum are no strangers to Fox News telling lies. Recently, Fox misrepresented and subtly mocked Mayor Ras Baraka for comparing himself to the biblical figure David while on stage for Angela Rye’s State of the People tour. Angela’s not sure if she should be upset about it and is looking to her hosts for advice. Should we care about what the lying made-for-the-comfort-of-white-audiences news says? Or are we better off ignoring them? Here is the piece that Fox wrote up: https://www.foxnews.com/politics/watch-newark-mayor-compares-self-biblical-hero-wake-ice-protest-arrest-this-our-david-moment And the video clip that they pulled from: https://www.youtube.com/live/G6W67LIzAE4 Find out more about the State of the People tour: https://stateoftheppl.com/ If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ Welcome home y’all! —--------- We want to hear from you! The Surfer is one of those movies that comes around once in a few years that seems like it is a basic thriller but has so much more going on. Straight out of Dublin, Ireland, Director Lorcan Finnegan and writer Thomas Martin craft a thriller that moves towards midnight dark comedy about The Surfer (Nicolas Cage) who desperately wants to buy his childhood home on a beach in Australia. Locals aren't thrilled about this and thus the psychedelic deep search for sanity begins. I loved it and am encouraging everyone to see it as soon as they can. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

Linguists at Work! This is a special mini-podcast of the Linguistics Careercast called Linguists at Work. It's a series of 5-minute interviews with career linguists, conducted by grad students in the Georgetown Linguistics program, in which they ask the question: “What’s your job and how did you get it?” Every interview focuses on a job that a linguist not only can do, but adds value to based on the unique skillset we develop as language scientists. Today’s pod features Lexi Slome, who is an associate trial consultant. She earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics from Georgetown University in 2024, where she focused on discourse analysis of courtroom language, including research examining the role of identity construction in telling persuasive opening statement narratives. In her current role as a trial consultant, she uses both her linguistic knowledge and research skills to provide data-driven analysis of juror reactions to complex legal cases through research exercises such as mock trials and focus groups. The interview is conducted by Joana Fehr, a graduate student from Germany in the MLC program at Georgetown University. She has lived and studied in seven countries across Europe, North America, and South America, and brings a global perspective to her work. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum discuss one of the United States’ main exports: rightwing populism. While the U.S. is constricting imports from other countries (with serious shortages looming), we continue to be a major exporter of culture, including MAGA culture. We can trace rightwing populist ideology’s spread AND learn a thing or two for our own movements. We’ll revisit a question we posed on a past MiniPod: should our podcast feature conservative guests? Our hosts have thoughts on this one y’all. Tens of thousands of government employees are set to be re-classified as “schedule F” political appointees by the Trump administration. Glancing at Project 2025… This looks like preparation for mass layoffs at the Federal government. Finally, Angela gives us an update on the State of the People tour. Stanford teacher Shannon Pufhal's debut novel about 1950's America and the restraints on being gay was raved in the LA Times as being “a remarkable spell. [She] embraces noir's mood while weaving in a love story,” by Mark Athitakis. Other reviewers found the novel so boring and bland they had to read the bulk of it in one sitting because they couldn't fathom picking it up again. The movie version lies somewhere in the middle. I felt the characters had no arcs, motivations were out the window and when things go bad, the response is “What can I do? Amiright?” However, the costumes were amazing and it had decent acting, given the dialogue was all over the place.“Horses” is a film that wants to explore the restrictions of being gay in a straight, conservative world, but feels more like a hangout flick where the characters rarely come in conflict. They never come to a conclusion, or if they do, it doesn't make sense. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

Christopher Landon's latest flick is the trailer you've seen if you've been to the theaters in the last month. In fact, the running joke on Reddit is the trailer for Drop should show before the actual movie that way we can get the full circle experience. I'm not going to lie: I was pretty convinced the movie either: A) Didn't exist or B) Was a real stinker. Turns out I was wrong on both counts!Since this is a mini pod, the episode is me talking about my thoughts on the film and doing some light info with ciritic reviews. I felt like doing these, because there were certain movies I would watch and deem them necessary of having more than just a written review. Governor Whitmer on Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist AND her visit with Trump. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are joined by the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer. Governor Whitmer’s term is almost over and the race to succeed her is on. Notably, she has not endorsed her Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist (nor anyone else). Lt. Gov Gilchrist is a friend of the show and the Black community, and so the hosts must ask: what gives? PLUS Governor Whitmer has said she’s open to working with Trump and she was even spotted recently at the White House in a somewhat embarrassing photo. We’ll get to the bottom of her controversial decision to meet with the president; was the meeting productive or was she just used as a photo-op prop? And of course we’ll hear from you! The movie that is making some noise at the indie level is about the scandal that rocked 1984: Michael Larson took on Press Your Luck and walked away with $110,237 (roughly $339,000) in cash and prizes! Although the movie has a fun idea, there really isn't enough meat on the bones of this, but I still wanted to talk about it. Join in the fun as I talk about 1984, the culture of the time and what led to Larson never landing on the dreaded whammy in his 47 spins! If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. Hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross, along with guest-host Elie Mystal, respond to a provocative listener question submitted by Dr. B.J. Brunious. Dr. Brunious saw last week’s episode and, as a Black gay man, was TRIGGERED. He doesn’t know anyone who identifies as “gay” before “Black” (as was discussed last week). He asks how it came to be that some Black folk think that one group’s gains (hispanics, LGBTQ, etc.) mean the Black community’s loss? Isn’t this the same logic used by white people AGAINST the Black community all the time?
