New season? Yes, it is. Well. M Squad / Police Squad! Side-By-Side Red Rock Cider
Frank Drebin first graced our screens in 1982 with Police Squad, but 6 episodes is all we got. Fast forward 6 years and we get to this week's Chris pick with The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! The production of The Naked Gun was like a case file thick with mystery, mayhem, and, most likely, unpaid parking tickets. Directed by the Zucker brothers with a firm grip on comedy and a loose grip on reality, this cinematic marvel brought Lieutenant Frank Drebin to the big screen, much to the delight of the three people who remembered Police Squad! from 1982. They say this movie was made on a modest budget, but Frank's always said, if you can't solve it with duct tape and a pair of sensible shoes, you're probably not on his police force. The budget might've been low, but the jokes were plentiful, and if one didn't work, we were already onto the next one by the time the first one hit the ground. They brought Frank to Los Angeles, where the sun is as relentless as a perp with nothing to lose. The Zuckers and Abrahams had a vision: combine slapstick and deadpan to make every scene feel like an all-points bulletin of laughter. With a crack team of talented actors and stuntmen who were probably just as confused as anyone, they pulled it off, and The Naked Gun became an instant classic. It's not every day that the badge, the gun, and a suspect list full of clowns come together, but when they do, you can bet Frank'll be there, saying something profoundly misguided. And remember, if you see something suspicious… well, keep it to yourself. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: I, Lieutenant Frank Drebin, find myself on the trail of a sinister plot—someone wants to harm the Queen of England during her visit to Los Angeles. Naturally, I can't let that happen, not on my watch, and certainly not before lunch. As I dive into my investigation, things get complicated. There's Jane, a mysterious woman who's got more charm than a box of donuts and who may or may not be involved with a devious businessman named Vincent Ludwig. Ludwig, by the way, is planning something big, and I don't mean a charity bake sale. So there I am, trying to stop an assassination attempt, win Jane's heart, and look good in a cheap suit—all at once. Somehow, it all ends with me frantically searching the stands at a baseball game, dodging mascots and hot dog vendors as I try to save the Queen. But don't worry; I handle it with all the precision and grace you'd expect from a seasoned detective. In the end, justice is served, more or less, and I come out looking like a hero. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

When we talk about The Naked Gun (1988), we're diving headfirst into a comedy treasure chest—one filled with absurdity, brilliant wordplay, and visual gags that just don't stop. This Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker (ZAZ) film, starring the ever-stoic Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling detective Lt. Frank Drebin, stands as one of the defining examples of slapstick parody. It's a film that has aged remarkably well, continuing to resonate with new audiences and reminding those who saw it back in 1988 just how funny an entirely ridiculous movie can be.Plot and Storytelling: Simplicity at its FunniestAt its core, The Naked Gun is a detective story—a genre that's been spoofed many times but never quite with the same flair as this film. The plot revolves around Lt. Drebin, a man dedicated to solving crimes but utterly incapable of doing so with any amount of skill or professionalism. In The Naked Gun, Drebin is tasked with thwarting a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Los Angeles. The story quickly evolves into a chaotic blend of police procedural satire, ridiculous missteps, and wildly inappropriate antics, all the while managing to maintain an air of sincerity, thanks to Nielsen's deadpan performance. The film plays it smart by not worrying too much about the intricacies of the plot. Instead, it focuses on building its jokes around the absurdity of the situation and the cluelessness of its characters. It's almost as if the ZAZ team were saying, “We know the plot's thin, but you're here for the laughs, right?” And laugh we do—from the first moment to the iconic final act at the baseball stadium. Whether it's a visual gag or a clever line of dialogue, every scene is packed with humour. The Genius of Leslie Nielsen: Deadpan PerfectionBefore The Naked Gun, Leslie Nielsen had a long career in more serious roles but found his true calling as a comedic actor in Airplane! (1980)—also directed by ZAZ. That film launched Nielsen's second wind as a parody star, and his portrayal of Frank Drebin cemented his legacy as the king of deadpan humour. The genius of Nielsen lies in his ability to deliver the most ridiculous lines with the gravitas of a Shakespearean actor. There's no winking at the camera or over-the-top physical comedy; Nielsen plays it as straight as possible, making the absurdity around him even funnier.Take, for example, one of the film's most famous lines: “Nice beaver.” Drebin says this with no awareness of the double entendre, but when Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) responds by handing him a literal stuffed beaver, the joke lands perfectly. This sort of naive, deadpan delivery that Nielsen mastered makes Frank Drebin one of the most lovable oafs in cinematic history.Supporting Cast: A Perfect EnsembleOf course, Nielsen is supported by a stellar cast, each contributing to the film's comic rhythm. Priscilla Presley plays Jane Spencer, Drebin's love interest, and her straight-laced performance brilliantly complements Nielsen's obliviousness. The chemistry between Presley and Nielsen feels oddly genuine, grounding the film just enough to allow the wild antics around them to feel even more surreal.George Kennedy, as Drebin's partner, Captain Ed Hocken, provides another layer of deadpan delivery, playing the more serious cop who happens to be swept along by Drebin's incompetence. Meanwhile, Ricardo Montalbán, as the villain Vincent Ludwig, brings an elegant, almost Bond-villain-style menace to the role, perfectly contrasting Drebin's clumsy crime-fighting attempts. Montalbán's role is particularly memorable for how seriously he seems to take his part—his dignity adding to the hilarity of the situations he finds himself in.Slapstick and Sight Gags: Nonstop and RelentlessZucker, Abrahams, and Zucker excel in their unique brand of humour, and The Naked Gun is no exception. The film is filled with sight gags that reward multiple viewings. For instance, in the opening scene, Drebin foils an international conspiracy while hilariously bumbling his way through a fight with some of the world's most notorious villains. The film doesn't waste a moment to make you laugh—whether it's Drebin inadvertently causing chaos during a press conference or his notorious attempt to sing the national anthem at a baseball game. One standout moment is the baseball stadium scene, where Drebin, disguised as an umpire, ends up calling the game. This sequence showcases Nielsen's impeccable timing and the film's mastery of physical comedy. Drebin's complete misunderstanding of how baseball works leads to a series of increasingly ridiculous events, all while keeping the assassination plot in the background. It's a perfect example of how The Naked Gun balances slapstick with satire, layering gags on top of each other for maximum effect.Pop Culture and Cultural Impact: The Birth of a ClassicThe Naked Gun was an instant hit when it was released, not just because it was funny, but because it tapped into something fresh at the time: the spoof genre had been gaining steam in the 1980s, but few films did it as relentlessly or as successfully as The Naked Gun. Its success spawned two sequels—The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994)—both continued Drebin's absurd adventures. But the film's influence extended beyond its sequels. It paved the way for other parody films, helping solidify the ZAZ brand of comedy, which had already been popularised by Airplane! and Top Secret! (1984). It also led to an entire generation of comedies that relied on rapid-fire jokes and visual gags, like Hot Shots! (1991) and Scary Movie (2000). Even modern-day comedy shows, like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, owe a debt to The Naked Gun for its ability to blend procedural elements with comedy. The Enduring Legacy of Frank DrebinThe Naked Gun remains a beloved comedy classic over three decades after its release. Part of that is due to its unique combination of clever wordplay, slapstick humour, and pure silliness, but it's also because of the character of Frank Drebin. In a sea of competent, smooth-talking detectives, Drebin is a breath of fresh air—a man who's as clueless as he is sincere. There's something timeless about how Leslie Nielsen approaches the role, never once letting Drebin become a caricature but always playing him with heart, no matter how foolish he seems. For fans of parody, The Naked Gun is essential viewing. It's the kind of film you can watch repeatedly and still find something new to laugh at. Whether you're a die-hard fan revisiting the movie or a newcomer discovering Drebin's antics for the first time, The Naked Gun never fails to deliver pure comedic gold. So, if you haven't yet revisited this classic, now's the time. Just be prepared to laugh—over and over again.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 88: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Jack Smith dares our corrupt Supreme Court to answer the decisive question right here, right now: If Dementia J. Trump is right and he didn't just make up this "Presidential Immunity" bullshit out of whole cloth, why did Ford pardon Nixon? Why did Nixon negotiate a pardon with Ford before he resigned? Why did Trump say just three months ago he was advised to pardon himself, and that if elected again he would consider a self-pardon? Smith's bold move to get the Supreme Court to decide this ultimate question will, if nothing else, cut Trump's endless stalls off at the pass. But with Samuel Alito just yesterday issuing a dissent in another case that might as well have been pulled off one of Trump's insane ALL CAPS SOCIAL MEDIA WORDGASMS, might Alito lead SCOTUS into a disaster just horrific enough to destroy itself and the nation by siding with Trump's ahistorical, unconstitutional crap? ALSO: On Day One of their trial, Giuliani's lawyer assures us he knows he did wrong and shouldn't be punished for slandering the two Georgia poll workers. Then Rudy goes out and slanders them again. Trump's mental deterioration is so obvious it was noticed even by Megyn Kelly (who looks like she could star in a re-make of "Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS"). And his "dictator" remarks are so obviously dangerous that even Peter Baker and The New York Times noticed - and the Trump campaign is trying to get him to ix-nay the ictatorship-day. B-Block (20:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Their political grandfathers wanted to appease Hitler and give him England and the Jews. Today's GOP is meeting with representatives of Hungarian strongman Orban to try to appease Putin and give him Ukraine and NATO. (24:37) IN SPORTS: Shohei Ohtani is both selfless and selfish. He will defer $68 million a year of his $70 million salary, giving his new Dodger employers a huge break in the baseball "luxury tax" - and himself on the real California state tax. And what happened to that Ohtani-To-Toronto story? My bet, from having seen it occur to another brilliant sports reporter, is that Jon Paul Morosi didn't screw up; his source did - or lied to him. I'll tell you the Jim Lampley/Larry Brown story. And I'll SING ABOUT MOROSI AND OHTANI. (34:31) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Vivek Ramaswamy's most cogent statement ever: leaves the mike on during a bathroom break. Climate deniers will get to watch another previously unconsidered disaster unfold. And Nancy Mace and her fiancé broke up? A class dame like her what talks about morning sex at a prayer breakfast? c-Block (39:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: You are welcome to skip this, but I found a cassette over the weekend. It is a bunch of sportscasts recorded the week of my 18th birthday. The voice is high, the predictions are startlingly good. As are the cameos.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's show opens with NBC News declaring, after all of the evidence, testimony, emails, picture, SARs, text messages and more, there is nothing to see here when it comes to Joe Biden. They have decided on a bold strategy of not just ignoring the news, like many of their peers, they have become the leaders in telling us they see nothing here at all. This eventually leads to a comment former AG William Barr said to Kaitlan Collins on CNN. Barr said any attorney defending Trump should plan to find themselves as part of future criminal investigations. That is a stunning and horrifying comment to hear from not just an attorney, but the former Attorney General of the United States of America! I already made the case they are criminalizing the First Amendment and now they are telling attorneys, if you choose to defend the “wrong” clients (as determined by the state), you could be committing a criminal act yourself. On the subject of criminal act, Alan Dershowitz says Special Prosecutor Jack Smith broke the law by intentionally leaving out exculpatory evidence when he made his case to the D.C. Grand Jury. In his mind, that should mean the case bypasses the local judge and goes straight to the Supreme Court of the United States. I then spend a moment discussing mail-in ballot fraud and how easy it is to commit. I remind everyone, it's not about adding millions of ballots across the nation, but a few thousand in a handful of key battleground states. And, to go with this, I just happen to have a story of how an elections forensics team said they believe upwards of 34,000 ballots in Wayne County, Michigan (Detroit), are illegal. But, I guess just stating that aloud, I have committed a felony per the standards set forth by Jack Smith. Victor Davis Hanson put out a piece entitled, “Two sets of laws for two Americas.” I think he has a valid argument. It goes along with the two-tiered system I've been discussing for the whole of the Biden regime. When we compare identical charges or circumstances, we definitely have one set of laws for the Left and a different set for the Right. In honor of all Jack Smith is doing to protect the Biden Crime Family and the Left's effort to destroy the Bill of Rights, we turn to comedian Jim Gossett who brings us a song called, “Jack Smith to the Rescue. As we head into the weekend, I do end with three ridiculous news items for your laughter and enjoyment. NBC Senior White House Correspondent Kelly O'Donnell tried to be snarky in a Twitter post about Donald Trump's plane needing to wait to taxi off the runway. Epic fail. Next, The reverend Al Sharpton tried to play righteous historian, stating our esteemed Founding Fathers, like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, would never even consider overthrowing the government. Anyone want to tell him? And, finally, we get a brand new installment of Deep Thoughts with VP Kamala Harris. In her latest version of word salad, she mixes up a doozy as only she can conjure. In a room of 8-year-olds, she is the reigning genius. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. We have finally reached the end (until the reboot comes out, at least) of our journey with Lt. Frank Drebin of Police Squad! with Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994). And oh what a journey it has been. The boys are back in L.A. (did they ever really leave?) with mostly new jokes and a new villain, played by Fred Ward. The plot, such as it is, is even hinkier than the previous two entries but now we've got Anna Nicole Smith thrown into the mix. That subtitle is looking particularly on the nose when all's said and done. "It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day." This week the boys take a trip with Frank Drebin as he tries to figure out why Nordberg was shot in this 1988 comedy. It's six years after Police Squad! was unceremoniously canceled but you can't keep a good man down! Frank Drebin is back, as are Capt. Ed Hocken (now played by George Kennedy), Mr. Olson (still play by Ed Williams) and Nordberg (now played by O.J. Simpson, oof). Mike, Mark, and Chris get into the Naked Gun series where things seem very similar, yet also very different from PS. Drebin and team must foil a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II at a baseball game. Also with Priscilla Presley and Ricardo Montalban. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5652799/advertisement

Oh hey, we're just hanging out with a bowl full of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, waiting for Michael Myers to come knock on our door at Breakfast All Day. Alonso and Christy review the horror movie “Halloween Ends” — which hopefully truly is the end — as well as the emotionally wrenching drama “Till,” about the 1955 lynching of 14-year-old Emmett Till. In news, we discuss the deaths of Angela Lansbury and Robbie Coltrane, as well as Sydney Sweeney as Barbarella and Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin. And it's a big day at our Patreon with recaps of three excellent episodes of television: “Andor,” “The Handmaid's Tale” and the series finale of “She-Hulk.” Join us!
We start the show with talk of the Naked Gun movies and Police Squad. Leslie Nielsen made the role of Frank Drebin his own. Liam Neeson is a great actor, but can he step into the shoes of the iconic character? And what does any of this have to do with The Simpsons?Blake and Regina had a great idea few weeks ago to talk about upcoming genre movies. It is was a great idea and, frankly, is something we should have been doing for a long time. So, this week we are debuting a new segment on the show. This week we talk about Genre of the Future! For our first installment, we talk the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, whether Halloween will truly end, and the greatest horror movie moments. For the first time ever, we have a repeat review on our show. The last time we did Deadstream, Blake was not able to join us. Since the show recently debuted on Shudder, we figured this would be a great time to rectify that. We talk about having love for your craft, the importance of simplicity and horror, and uncharismatic influencers. It is not often that a movie leaves us speechless. We may be baffled, confused, or frustrated, but we always have something to say. And then we watched Project Wolf Hunting. The South Korean movie is about a group of dangerous criminals being transported on a giant cargo ship. Naturally, they escape. It sounds like Korean Con Air on a boat, and it is for a while. It soon becomes something so different that we had no idea what to think about. What we were both sure of is that it is easily one of the goriest movies in recent memory. We talk about when enough is too much, try to figure out what the film is going for, and try to decide if the body count is closer to 50 or 60 people dead.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. This week we review Police Squad (Series 1 Episode 5)Created by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker, and starred Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin, Police Squad was first broadcast in the United States on the ABC network in 1982.A spoof of police procedurals, the series featured Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker's usual sight gags, wordplay and non sequiturs. While a parody of many television shows and movies, it bore a particular resemblance to the Lee Marvin cop show M Squad (in particular the opening credits) and the late 1960s series Felony Squad.TV Guide ranked it #7 on it's list of 60 shows that were "Cancelled Too Soon”.Created by Zucker, Abrahams & ZuckerProduced by Rick Correll & Deborah HwangDirected by variousA Paramount Production.Police Squad is available here: https://amzn.to/3zx6CNk The Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube. Whether your prime directives are to serve the public trust or protect the innocent...dead or alive you're coming with me! Police not only play a pivotal role in keeping the peace and protecting the innocent, they also are the backbone of a whole lotta 80s movies. So with that in mind, what if we took the best cops from the best 80s movies and made the best police force around? Today on Buzzn The Tower we'll do exactly that. Piece by piece we'll construct a police force that Commandant Lassard would be proud to see. I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always, the Nordberg to my Frank Drebin, Max Sanders. And with that...
Tatton Spiller and Diane Daniels from Simple Politics (Instagram, Podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Tatton's choice The Naked Gun. The Naked Gun is the 1988 police spoof comedy from David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams starring Leslie Nielsen as Det. Sgt. Frank Drebin, Priscilla Presley as Jane and O. J. Simpson as Det. Fred Nordberg. In this outing of the Police Squad! franchise Det. Frank Drebin is in charge of security for a visit of Queen Elizabeth II to LA while at the same time investigating a drug bust gone (hilariously) wrong. The Naked Gun manages to cram in a multitude of slapstick comedy and visual and verbal puns into its lean 85 minute runtime. Gags which have been burned into the memory of Flixwatcher and guests - who doesn't recall “it's Enrico Pallazzo!” or “ice beaver”??!! Could you make The Naked Gun now? Maybe not! The opening scene probably not but the majority of the humour is very childish rather than malicious. The Naked Gun scores highly across all Flixwatcher categories to score a very respectable 4.21 overall. Jason and Andy try discussing the twenty second episode of the Love Boat - S01E22, A Selfless Love/The Nubile Nurse/Parents Know Best. Leslie Nielson can't figure out why a younger woman want's his man meat, Andy hates Monty Hall's daughter in-law, and Doc, the cad, elevates harassment to a new level. Meanwhile, Andy fingers his neighbors dog in the name of science, Jason "air" fingers Elaine Joyce to "completion", and Brian rehabilitates a racoon that eventually is put to sleep because it eats toothpaste and is mistakenly thought to have rabies.

Omg. "The Naked Gun" is so good. Watch it. Watch all three of them. Watch anything with Leslie Nielsen. They're all worth it. But "The Naked Gun" holds a special place in our hearts. In the same style as "Airplane," this movie nails slapstick. We pair the movie with a Chardonnay from Straight Shooter. Metacritic Score: 76/100Movie Sync Notes: We streamed "The Naked Gun" on Paramount Plus. We start "The Naked Gun" 6:55 into the pod, and push play on part two 58:14 into the pod.
Jason and Andy try discussing the tenth episode of the Love Boat - S01E10, Dear Beverly/The Strike/Special Delivery. Leslie Nielson cheats on his wife (who it turns out was at fault for his infidelity), Al from Happy Days gets in a fight with the Captain and a pregnant woman reconciles with her husband who didn't know she was 9 months pregnant. Meanwhile, Andy drinks to much again, Jason does a spot on Eva Gabor impression, and Brian actually talks. This is Part 1 of a 2 part episode of the podcast, not the love boat episode which was just a normal 45 minute episode. I just want to make that clear that the discussion of this episode spans 2 parts and almost 3 hours in total. You were warned.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 08/20/2020 We're not exactly sure when David Zucker reached his comedy peak, but it's surprisingly not with this classic spoof comedy "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" based on the TV series "Police Squad!" Leslie Nielsen stars in his most popular role of Frank Drebin in this 1988 trilogy-starting movie that, again, is not as funny as its reputation.
