Zak Penn Explains Why Jay Knows Nothing About Show Business

Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show.  We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.

Cathy Moriarty Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Girl Crush! I've had one for years on Academy Award Nominee, Cathy Moriarty, now after spending a virtual hour with her, forgetaboutit! I always knew she was an incredible actress, whether making me laugh or cry, but, what an amazing woman… mother, daughter, loyal friend, and pet rescuer. We talked the Bronx, where we both come from, Alexanders, our mothers, gratefully still with us, Cathy's pre-Pesci discovery acting days… high school drama, plays, dinner theatre, no agent, no professional training, but grabbing stage time wherever she could, auditioning and then a bathing suit contest to win a coveted pair of shoes that would change her stars. The trifecta at 17, the beforementioned Pesci, DeNiro, and Scorcese––Raging Bull. Her first film which led to that Oscar nod, on-the-job master classes, and a friendship with her character's namesake that would last the rest of Vikki LaMotta's lifetime. Neighbors. Belushi's last film. Ackroyd's kindness. All Cathy learned about comedy from them. Soapdish, how she almost didn't get it, who almost did, one of Cathy's favorite films for so many reasons. A horrible car accident, getting back to work… Kindergarten Cop, Forget Paris, Casper, Speilberg, Eric Idle, Copland, Stallone, more DeNiro, Analyze That, and how easy they are together. Despite all the work, Cathy's so un-Hollywood. Unfazed by celebrity and stardom, she dreamt of being a great actress not a movie star. A mother, who loves to cook, and thanks to Marty's mother (Scorcese) she prides herself on making the best sauce and meatballs around, she's also a savvy businesswoman who's owned a few restaurants and very successful pizzerias. We're regulars at the Encino location. There was so much more to talk about than we had time for - there's a slice of pizza in our future… I have witnesses! What started out as respect, and adoration… I adore, more! American professor Hiram Bingham "discovered" Machu Picchu on 24th July, 1911 - though he initially misidentified it as Vilcabamba, the last stronghold of the Inca civilization during the Spanish conquest. Unlike Vilcabamba, Machu Picchu was built at the peak of the Inca Empire's glory. Believed to have been a winter retreat for the Inca elite, its exact purpose remains a mystery due to that civilisation's lack of written records. Situated 2,430 metres above sea level, the site features remarkable stone structures that have withstood earthquakes due to their precise construction without mortar.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Bingham got the funds to explore Peru so doggedly; consider whether Speilberg and Lucas were directly inspired by his escapades to create Indiana Jones; and explain how he went on to earn the nickname "The Flying Senator"... The first one we discuss is Minority Report, the 2002 Steven Speilberg and Tom Cruise film about stopping murders before they happen. This film still holds up really well on a technical level and the morality of the film holds even more true today. It's one of Speilberg's underrated films and he's firing on all cylinders here. From the cinematography, the script, the score, the acting, it all works. It's a futuristic noir film that is worth watching again if it's been a while. Having had a successful career as a writer and editor in the entertainment industry, from working with Speilberg to Saban Entertainment, Oliver has made a seamless transition into writing novels. The changeover was so seamless, in fact, that her colleagues were incredulous after reading her first book, mainly because it read like it came from a seasoned novelist. And, within the span of a few novels, Oliver has quickly established herself as an award-winning author. Her newest novel, Road to Elysium, is inspired by true events and addresses topics relevant to today's social and political atmosphere. The A24 rocks crew transports you to another era of the silver screen once again, this time they share their top ten 1970s films and invite Brian De Palma expert Ray Neeman on to share his top 10 as well. It was the time of Watergate, Vietnam, and psychedelic counter-culture for America in the 1970s: but how did that translate to film and pop culture? Many say the 70s was the "Golden Era of Film," a time when studios took more risks and directors such as Speilberg, Scorcese, Kubrick, and Coppola turned themselves into household names. It was also the decade where horror films became more horrific (in a good way), and the original Star Wars premiered and changed the world. WE'RE BACK! After a delicious summer break, we give you some updates on our lives and then jump into the world of pop culture. Melbourne Fashion Festival is beginning in a couple of weeks and while they champion small brands and slow fashion, they've decided to partner with Kmart, including hosting a runway. We read from this opinion piece and ask why they've made this choice. Last week, Harry Styles won Album of The Year for Harry's House at the 2023 Grammy awards. While he was saying his acceptance speech, however, one phrase he used got the internet talking: “This doesn't happen to people like me.” We debate what he meant by that and read from this piece for VICE titled American Nepo Babies Have Nothing On The British by Elle Hunt. 48-year-old Leonardo Dicaprio is rumoured to be dating 19-year-old model, Eden Polani. Gross. We discuss this phenomenon and the discourse around it. TikTok has introduced a lot of vocab into our lives, some more confusing or coded than others. One currently trending is referring to 'mascara' when talking about another topic entirely. We reference this piece from The Conversation. Julia Fox has come under fire for walking in alleged abuser, Alexander Wang's, runway show at NYFW which is... an interesting choice. Next up, from the truly viral Dyson AirWrap to the Bella Hadid-endorsed Ugg Minis, it seems there's always an onslaught of products that are a “must-have”. What's come in its place is "deinfluencing". We ask if this will really stop rampant consumerism or if it's a way to make people feel better about not being able to afford luxury goods. We share these TikToks: here, here & here. In recommendations, Maggie shares her love of the new Speilberg film 'The Fablemans' while Jas loved 'Lessons In Chemistry' by Bonnie Garmus. Chat next time! Love ya - Jas and Mags xo Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Book Vs. Movie: DuelThe Richard Matheson Short Story Vs. the Steven Spielberg TV Movie In 1971, a 24-year-old budding director named Steven Spielberg was given a story by his assistant. This fiction story appeared in a recent issue of Playboy magazine, written by one of his favorite Twilight Zone writers, Richard Matheson. The story Duel was about a man driving through the California desert being chased by an evil trucker with a big rig with murder on its mind. Matheson based it on an incident on November 22, 1963, when he was tailgated by a truck on his way home from a gold game. For years he tried to sell the story to TV but was turned down everywhere he pitched. To prepare for the short story, he drove from Los Angeles to Ventura, California, and recorded everything he saw. Our protagonist is never named in the story, and we have no idea why the driver is chasing him. Spielberg was looking to direct TV movies that were giant rating machines then and managed to get the gig with a $450,000 budget and only ten days to make it all work. In the end, he made a masterpiece that became a sensation in the early 1970s, including a 90-minute version released in Europe soon after. Dennis Weaver gives an intense performance, and the stunt work by Dale Van Sickel and Carey Loftin help make this film a “must-watch” for all fans of Spielberg and/or movie thrillersIn this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of Speilberg's early television careerThe outdoor shooting and stunt driving involvedThe influence Duel had on movie makingThe cast: Dennis Weaver (David Mann,) Jacqueline Scott (Mrs. Mann,) Eddie Firestone (cafe owner,) Lou Frizzel (bus driver,) Eugene Dynarski (man in cafe,) Lucille Benson as the “Lady at Snakerama.”Clips used:Dennis Weaver (talks to himself at the cafe)Duel original TV spot Dennis Weaver confronts a truckerDennis Weaver at the phonebooth sceneSteven Spielberg (behind-the-scenes interview)The truck crash scene and soundsMusic by Billy GoldenbergBook Vs. If you look up “fun,” it'll take you right to this thing right here. Exceeding my high expectations, Tim Matheson is even more gorgeous, charming, intelligent, animated, accessible, and fabulous than I could've imagined. Don't think I've ever had more fun at 11 in the morning. Squeezing us in on a busy day of meetings, and a table read for Netflix's #1 smash, Virgin River, which Tim both stars in, and oft directs, he was relaxed, gave us his full attention, energy, passion, and focus, and, what a treat it was after all these years of adoring him. We jumped into Animal House, how it went down, how he got it, what almost was, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Peter Reigert, Karen Allen, Mark Metcalf, who, thanks to his extreme kindness, introduced me to Tim, making today possible. We circled back through this Burbank boys' start, My Three Sons, Leave it to Beaver, voicing Jonny Quest, the Western years, Bonanza, The Virginian, co-starring with Kurt Russell in The Quest, opposite Henry Fonda, and Lucille Ball in Yours, Mine and Ours, studying at every turn, including a year of Improv, leading to the big stretch, comedy and portraying the good bad boy, working with Landis and then Speilberg and again Belushi in 1941. All the while absorbing and honing his craft, whilst learning from the masters. We talked The West Wing, composer Snuffy Walden, our 2 degrees, Aaron Sorkin, Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Martin Sheen, Tommy Schlamme, the brilliance, professionalism, and frenetic pace. With our time swiftly waning we touched on This Is Us and landed on VIrgin River, currently readying to roll on Season 5, as I and many binge the just dropped Season 4. I could've talked with Tim all day and still have longed for more. What a great spirit! Such joie de vivre, not to mention ridiculously easy on the eyes, ears, and I suspect, all five senses. Put it all together- it was FUN! Two thumbs way up. Tim Matheson Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson *** Wednesday, 8/3/22, 11 am PT, 2 pm ET*** Streamed Live on my Facebook Replay here:

We saved (one of) the best for last: Astro City. This is Kurt's masterpiece. Along with artist Brent Anderson and cover artist/collaborator Alex Ross, Kurt created an entire superhero universe for Astro City. The characters are a combination of analogues of very popular superhero "types" (we see a Superman-ish person, a Spider-Man ish hero, a Justice League, a Fantastic Four), but also characters who don't fit cleanly into any box. What is true of every character in Astro City is they are: human, emotional, moving, surprising and impressively thought-through. Astro City is to superhero comics what Speilberg movies are to adventure serials: better, deeper more moving versions of the old tropes --- done with joy and love and excitement. We dig a bit into two issues: #1 ("Flying") and #1/2 ("The Nearness of You") which is one of the Milksops' favorite issues of comic book of ANY genre and series.
