This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're diving into the late-stage slasher sequels, comparing two sixth entries that took their respective franchises in wildly different directions. We're pitting Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) against A Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991). Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) Directed by Tom McLoughlin, Jason Lives marks a significant shift for the Friday the 13th series. After a brief hiatus, Jason returns, but this time, he's a resurrected, supernatural force of nature. This entry leans heavily into self-aware humor and action-oriented set pieces, giving us a more playful, albeit still violent, take on the iconic killer. A Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) Directed by Rachel Talalay, Freddy's Dead attempts to wrap up the Nightmare on Elm Street saga with a surreal and cartoonish finale. This film delves into Freddy's origins, revealing his childhood and the source of his evil. It's known for its over-the-top special effects, bizarre dream sequences, and a generally more comedic tone than previous entries. Join us as we dissect these two films, exploring how they attempted to revitalize their franchises, the impact of their tonal shifts, and whether they succeeded in delivering satisfying sequels. Spoilers start around 5:50.

One of the things we continue to preach on this podcast is learning about the people that are involved with the films we love. It helps you see more and understand more, about the person, as well as the final product they are involved with, whether they are an actor, makeup artist, or director. Author Joe Maddrey's recent book, The Soul of Wes Craven, from Harker Press, does just this, digging deep into the man, and shows us fans a lot more behind this Master of Horror than we might not have known. To help dig into Craven and his work, we invited Mr. Maddrey on the show to talk about his book and this highly influential filmmaker. Films mention in this episode: Act of Vengeance (1974), Alone in the Dark (1982), Angel Heart (1987), The Believers (1987), Chiller (1985), Deadly Friend (1986), Death Wish (1974), Dreamscape (1984), Frankenstein Unbound (1990), Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985), Ghost (1990), Hills Have Eyes (1977), Hills Have Eyes 2 (1984), The Horror Show (1989), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Jacob's Ladder (1990), Last House on the Left (1972), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Red (2005), Scream (1996), The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988), Shocker (1989), Swamp Thing (1982), The Thing (1982), Together (1971), War of the Worlds (1953), Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

Aleks and Milenko are pumped this week on Thirsty for Gore as they dive into Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives! After the mess of Part 5, this one brings Jason back to life (literally) in all his undead, supernatural glory. With a fresh, self-aware tone, and some of the best kills in the series, the brothers are loving the meta-humor and comic-book-style action that makes this entry one of the most fun of the franchise. It's Jason at his coolest, and the brothers can't wait to geek out over the return of the unstoppable slasher they know and love. Get ready for a lively, nostalgia-fueled discussion on why Jason Lives is a fan-favorite!

In this episode, we return to our much beloved Found Footage subgenre to check out a recent indie darling that's been gaining a lot of attention online. In the 1980s, many movie fans thought the Friday the 13th series was at its best with the fourth movie, The Final Chapter, where it seemed like Jason Voorhees was finally defeated. The fifth film, A New Beginning, tried to take the story in a new direction but didn't satisfy fans. Then, a new writer and director named Tom McLoughlin was asked to bring new life to the series and the famous killer. In his story, Tommy Jarvis digs up Jason's grave with the plan to burn his remains and end the trauma he caused. Instead of ending Jason's terror, a bolt of lightning hits the corpse, bringing him back to life like Frankenstein. Listen to Tim Williams and co-hosts Charlie Cotter and Laramy Wells from the "Moving Panels" Podcast, as they discuss "Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives" from 1986 on this special bonus episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Writer/director Tom McLoughlin decided that Jason would not harm a child out of sympathy for the plight of children generated by his childhood drowning.

WARNING! THIS EPISODE CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS FOR DUNE: PART TWO (2024) WARNING! linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This May is “Summer Camp Edition” at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, Kyle and Trevor will be reviewing summer camp themed movies. This week, we pull double duty and review both Tom McLoughlin's, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), AND Denis Villeneuve's, Dune: Part Two (2024)! The sixth entry in the classic slasher franchise, Tom McLoughlin's, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) represents a major transition point in the series. Featuring the return of Jason Voorhees (after his disappointing absence in Part V), the introduction of supernatural elements to the Voorhees lore, and a campier, more playful tone, Part VI is often regarded as one of the more creative and memorable sequels in the franchise. Denis Villeneuve's, Dune: Part Two (2024) is the epic sequel to the director's previous Dune: Part One (2021), with both films comprising the events of Frank Herbert's legendary sci-fi novel. While by no means a “summer camp” film, Kyle found himself too bored by Friday the 13th Part VI to devote an entire podcast to, so throughout the episode he and Trevor occasionally pivot to discussing/reviewing Dune: Part Two.Follow us on Instagram @catchinguponcinema Follow us on Twitter @CatchingCinema Like, share, subscribe, and we'll catch you next time!

We talk to Thom Mathews - Legendary Actor known for portraying Tommy Jarvis in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives and Freddy in The Return of the Living Dead 1 & 2. Thom recalls growing up in Hollywood and what led him to pursue an acting career. We learn of his friendship and loyalty to George Clooney and the lengths Thom went to creating the look and style of characters he played in his career. Along the way we hear about how the band Visage weren't too keen on the classic Zombie movie of 1985 and how it was for Thom to return to the Tommy Jarvis role decades later in the Never Hike Alone series of movies.Presented in association with Affinity Photo - The hottest photo editing software on iPad, Mac & PChttps://affinity.serif.com/photoIntro Music by Johnny Monacohttps://www.johnnymonaco.com/ Incidental Music by Night Fires Please visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://patreon.com/stvpod

The 4th Scary Sequel Month is one of the best because it has a Friday the 13th, so we went with Jason Lives. This is the one that brought Jason back and is almost like a Jason spoof with some of jokes. We discussed the gravedigger who might live in the woods, the insult farthead, Jason's utility belt, Megan being obsessed with Tommy after meeting him for 5 minutes, and more. This is a fun one.
