Most of the Young Frankenstein crew. What could possibly go wrong? According to half the podcast crew, it went terribly wrong and for the other half, it went wonderfully right.

We continue Marrr-ch, a month named for what else but pirate films, with another film whose reputation not only precedes it, but also is rightfully earned: Yellowbeard. Mondo Heather's Heather Drain and Dark Destination's Father Malone join the proceedings to determine how a movie with this many comedians can be this bracingly unfunny.Starring a veritable who's who of '70s and '80s comedians, both American and British, it follows the titular Yellowbeard (Graham Chapman) who must use the treasure map tattooed on his son's head to find his lost treasure. It's a film where there isn't enough of the good parts, which is any time Graham Chapman is on-screen; weird the film is titled Yellowbeard eh?For more episodes of the Kulturecast along with many more podcasts that are guaranteed to be your new favorite audio obsession, check out Weirding Way Media at weirdingwaymedia.com.

Here it is. Our massive exploration of one of the most disreputable genres imaginable: The Swishbuckler. A loose collection of movies created in the mid-70s through the mid-80s parodying the classic swashbucklers of yore, swishbuckler films like Zorro The Gay Blade, Pirates, Yellowbeard and Cheech & Chong's The Corsican Brothers are marked by their terrible comedy, penchant for grotesquerie, extreme campiness and even more extreme poor taste. This might be The Pink Smoke's most massive podcast undertaking yet: from the genre's roots in Richard Lester's Musketeers films to a send-off into the swashbuckler revival of the 90s ignited by Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, it's an improbably in-depth look at an utterly ridiculous genre for which hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs have an almost inconceivable enthusiasm. Support our Patreon: www.patreon.com/thepinksmoke (Still need an explanation of what the hell is going on here? Here ya go: At the dawn of cinema, there was The Swashbuckler: intrigue, romance and derring-do that swept audiences into the colorful royal courts and handsome pirate ships from the pages of Dumas and Sabatini. Even after its post-war peak, the Swashbuckler remained the most popular of Hollywood entertainment, having made international stars of Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn and modern legends of mythical heroes like Zorro, Robin Hood, the Three Musketeers and Captain Peter Blood. By the 1970's, the legacy of Fairbanks and Flynn had devolved into what we loving term the Swishbuckler: a subgenre of comedy that borrowed the same tales of adventure and romance mixed with a healthy dose of modern irreverence. For a solid decade, raunchy satires placed in historical settings marked a trail of flatulence and queasy sexual politics across American screens to an overwhelmingly hostile critical and poor commercial response. We at the Pink Smoke are so fascinated by this odd epoch of cinema that we recorded a nearly five-hour episode in which we chronicle 14 Swishbuckler "classics," trying to understand how this wave of mediocrity managed to stay afloat for 10 years in spite of marked indifference to outright derision from critics and consistently sinking box office returns. How did these always weird, sometimes nasty exercises in Golden Era grave robbing reflect the styles and attitudes of comedy of the time? How did they deal with huge movements like women's liberation? Was the heritage of the Swashbuckler respected, even while the outmoded ideals of gallantry and romance were being purposefully disrespected? If you ever asked for an in-depth analysis of this bizarre trend of parodying a bygone era of film, you've come to the right place!) It has developed into it's own genre.    Want some vintage pirate history? Check out the classic Errol Flynn movie Captain Blood. Or see how Walt Disney himself interpreted those mutineers in Peter Pan or Treasure Island. Or a later modern day telling of Blackbeard's Ghost.   But they're not all really bad eggs. Peter Pan, Muppet Treasure Island, and Pirates: Band of Misfits give the whole family something to laugh at.   If you want some music while you sit in the crow's nest, how about the Pirates of Penzance? Or maybe some inappropriate Monty Pythonesque humor in Yellowbeard or the questionable 80's story of Ice Pirates.   It may look a little different, but we still think the Goonies and Princess Bride qualify as pirate movies. But the first one most people think of these days is the Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp's quirky Captain Jack Sparrow.   Movies aren't the only way to be a beggar and blighter. You could ride the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in the Disney parks. Or enjoy a baseball game in Pittsburgh. When asked about the movie Yellowbeard, John Cleese said that it was one of the six worst movies ever made. His co-star, and fellow Monty Python Alum, Eric Idle commented that it was one of the worst films he ever made. With those endorsements from the film's stars you know you have a certified Celluloid Zero on your hands, and Yellowbeard is just that. Jim and I first saw this move in the summer of 1983 and, looking back, our parents should have received a visit from child protective services for letting us see it. Watching this film as an adult, though, spurred some interesting and sometimes cranky-old-manish conversations around "kids these days" and why certain movies are more appealing to men than women. We also discuss why things that look good on paper, such as an all star cast of comedic geniuses, sometimes don't play out when they come together like some comedic Voltron. This really is a movie that doesn't age well, particularly in the #MeToo era, what with all the rape jokes and all. What does age well, however, is Mike's audiobook All the F*cks I Cannot Give, narrated by the Adam Carolla Show's announcer, Mike Dawson. It's available for purchase on Audible and Amazon. Happy Listening.

If you take the best of British late-70s comedy and combine it with a retro stoner comedy duo from the American 80s, then throw in just a sprinkle of ... well, anything else you can find, by the looks of it, really; then you get Yellowbeard, the movie that killed comedy. Peter Nygard (the internationally famous fashion designer) is today's featured guest. Topics: how technology has transformed the fashion industry; and the pivotal role he played in the beginning and final negotiation of NAFTA. Also, as I interviewed him, my assistant Peggy Gregory noticed that his leather jacket bore the seal of the president of the United States of America. Asking about this, he explained that President Bush Senior--while visiting him on his island--took it off and gave it to him in return for one of his designer T-Shirts. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the November 18, 2009 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 26 minutes] (This interview was recorded on October 4, 2009 at the Singularity Summit in New York City.) Peter Nygard is a fashion designer who's clothing, accessories, and home fashions can be found in Sears, Dillard's and countless other well known stores around the world. Enjoying a long and prosperous career, he owns a private island in the Bahamas called Nygard Key where he built a resort style mansion with a staff of 20, and owns a 133 feet long 727 as his private jet. He is friend to presidents, prime ministers, and celebrities of every media--TV, movies, music and print. This episode is dedicated with special thanks to Greta Blackburn (an actress who appeared in many TV shows in the 80s and 90s such as Three's Company and Dynasty, and several movies such as 48 Hrs and Yellowbeard, as well as the original version of the mini-series V). While I was busy interviewing futurists, Greta introduced my assistant Peggy to several noteworthy people we would have otherwise missed. One was Noel Patton of T.A. Sciences and another was today's guest, her friend, Peter Nygard. Greta was so modest that (though I kept thinking she looked familiar) I had no idea of her fame until I got home and looked her up online. If I had realized I would have asked her for an interview too.
