Tonight on TV Party Tonight, Mark Radulich, Jesse Starcher, and Alexis Hejna take a nostalgic deep dive into the cult classic animated series The Critic, starring Jon Lovitz as New York film critic Jay Sherman. Running for two short seasons in the mid-90s, The Critic blended sharp satire, biting movie parodies, and neurotic charm to skewer both Hollywood and media culture long before it was trendy.More than just a cartoon, The Critic feels like the unintentional prequel to Damn You Hollywood — a spiritual ancestor in tone, theme, and relentless cinematic takedowns. With a mix of affectionate homage and cutting commentary, the show set the tone for the modern pop culture review format that Mark and company would eventually make their own.Join us as we discuss the show's legacy, its oddly prescient relevance, and whether Jay Sherman's infamous catchphrase — “It stinks!” — still hits in 2025. Spoiler: it does.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.https://www.etsy.com/shop/Honeysuckle...Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/raduli...FB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1...

Nothing Comes Easy The Life Of Rodney Dangerfield From Michael Seth Starr Releases

NOTHIN' COMES EASY: The Life of Rodney Dangerfield (April 29, 2025) is the first biography of the "bug-eyed, sweaty, herky-jerky, tie-pulling comedian with the doleful countenance." Dangerfield's indelible beat-down image was played for laughs, but there were sad truths behind his sad-sack persona. TV writer Michael Seth Starr has crafted an immensely entertaining bio of the comedian's slog up the show business ladder. Ten years as a C-level stand-up comedian, he quit the business to sell aluminum siding and paint to keep the lights on. Then he went back to the clubs under an entirely new name, from Jack Roy to Rodney Dangerfield. A career-changing appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show at the ripe age of forty-five would be the lucky break, opening doors to television, movies, and comic fame at last. His catch phrase, "I don't get no respect," underscored his circuitous rise to the top after years of setbacks and grit. "What stood out for me, in authoring this book," writes Starr, '"was Dangerfield's perseverance in the face of such overwhelming odds. I was impressed at how he launched a second comedy career as a man already in his forties and out of the game for a decade. He never abandoned his undeniable urge to get back in the game and to share his seemingly unending reservoir of magical one-liners." At the beginning of his comeback, he began writing jokes for comedians like Jackie Mason and Joey Bishop, in the days before the "no respect" persona was solidified. He worked agentless, making his own deals. And it took him a solid five years to clinch his now celebrated debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. It took another few years of hustling on the circuit before he landed on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, which opened a wealth of doors in Hollywood. Dangerfield's comedy style - a self-mocking angst, the comedy of the perpetual loser - was endearing and universal. He was the schlubby Everyman snubbed by life, finally making it big. Soon Dangerfield would be leaving his mark in films, most famously in Caddyshack and Back to School. He was rebuffed in later years by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - which refused him membership. But Dangerfield had already cemented his place in comedy history as a writer and performer. When he died in 2004, his death made international headlines. Among his pallbearers were George Carlin, Roseanne Barr, Chris Rock, Larry David, Andrew Dice Clay, Jon Lovitz, and Carl Reiner. The book closes with a highly engaging chapter, "Riffs on Rodney," with remembrances of the comic from his peers including Jay Leno, Rita Rudney, Bob Nelson, Robert Wuhl, and Pauly Shore. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

We present our conclusion to Black History Month with actor focus; this time we celebrate the career of Samuel L. Jackson!  We're looking 3 of his starring vehicles Snakes on a Plane, then The Great White Hype and finally Soul Men, also starring the late, great Bernie Mac!Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most iconic, prolific, and versatile actors in modern cinematic history. With a career spanning over five decades, Jackson has appeared in more than 150 films, cementing his status as a cultural icon and a box office powerhouse. His breakthrough role came in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever (1991), but it was his unforgettable performance as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) that propelled him to global stardom. That role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and introduced audiences to his signature blend of charisma, intensity, and humor — all delivered with that unmistakable commanding voice.Throughout his career, Jackson has balanced blockbuster success with critically acclaimed performances. He's a staple in Tarantino's films, appearing in Jackie Brown, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight, showcasing his ability to deliver complex, morally ambiguous characters with unmatched flair. His work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nick Fury has made him a cornerstone of one of the most successful film franchises in history, introducing him to a new generation of fans.Despite his widespread popularity, Samuel L. Jackson's awards recognition has often lagged behind his cultural impact. In addition to his Oscar nomination for Pulp Fiction, Jackson has received numerous honors, including a BAFTA Award, Golden Globe nominations, and an Honorary Academy Award in 2022, recognizing his lifetime achievements and contributions to cinema.Jackson's legacy is defined not only by his memorable performances but also by his ability to elevate even the most minor roles into something unforgettable. Whether in gritty dramas, high-octane action films, or sharp comedies, his presence demands attention, often turning supporting parts into scene-stealing moments. Beyond acting, Jackson's influence extends to his advocacy for diversity in Hollywood, his mentorship of younger actors, and his efforts to champion independent filmmakers. With a career that seamlessly spans indie gems, blockbusters, and prestige films, Samuel L. Jackson stands as a living legend whose legacy is defined by his versatility, consistency, and undeniable cultural presence — a true icon whose impact will resonate for generations to come.Snakes on a Plane is a 2006 American action thriller[3] film directed by David R. Ellis and starring Samuel L. Jackson. It was released by New Line Cinema on August 18, 2006, in North America and the UK. The film was written by David Dalessandro, John Heffernan, and Sebastian Gutierrez and follows the events of dozens of venomous snakes being released on a passenger plane in an attempt to kill a trial witness. The Great White Hype is a 1996 American sports comedy film directed by Reginald Hudlin. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, Peter Berg, Damon Wayans, Jeff Goldblum, Jon Lovitz, Cheech Marin, John Rhys-Davies, Salli Richardson and Jamie Foxx. The film satirizes racial preferences in boxing, and was inspired by Larry Holmes's 1982 fight with Gerry Cooney (who was known as "The Great White Hope") and Mike Tyson's 1995 return fight vs. Peter McNeeley. Entertainment Weekly called Rev. Fred Sultan (Samuel L. Jackson) a "Don King-clone."Soul Men is a 2008 American musical comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Sharon Leal and Sean Hayes, released on November 7, 2008. It was one of three Mac's films that were released after his death (and was actually released on the same date as another posthumous film, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa).Mac and Isaac Hayes died on August 9 and 10, 2008, respectively. Director Lee said the film was heavily re-edited to soften the tone of the film, as a tribute to the two actors.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

What the Riff?!?

When it comes to hair metal of the mid to late 80's, no band discussion would be complete without bringing Poison into the mix.  The band consisted of front man Bret Michaels, guitarist C.C. DeVille, bassist Bobby Dall, and Rikki Rockett on drums.  Poison is a band out of Pennsylvania.  Originally named Paris when formed in 1980, the band drew a good following in local bars in Pennsylvania, but decided opportunities would be greater in Los Angeles.  The band moved there in 1983 and changed their name to Poison.  They attracted a lot of attention with their stage show, and saw surprising success with their debut album, "Look What the Cat Dragged In," released in 1986.However, Poison's most successful release would be their second studio album, Open Up and Say... Ah!, released in April 1988.  It would sport four hit singles, including their sole number 1 single "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."  The album itself would hit number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.  It would also stir controversy with its cover, a picture of a demonic female with an extremely long tongue.  An alternate cover was designed to address concerns which showed only the eyes of the model.Poison would see further success in the late 80's and early 90's, though their popularity would wane as the grunge movement took over music in the 90's.  However, Poison has seen a resurgence of popularity as a "classic" band, and front man Bret Michaels has achieved success both as a celebrity personality and as a solo artist.Lynch brings us this glam rock album for today's podcast, and friend of the show Mike Fernandez joins us in Bruce's absence. Fallen AngelWhile the lyrics describe a young girl moving from Ohio to Los Angeles to try to make it as an actress, the song is really more autobiographical of the path the band took from Pennsylvania.  This second single from the album went to number 16 on the Hot 100.Nothin' But a Good Time"The first single from the album reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is one of their best known songs.  It was built off a guitar riff by C.C. DeVille and a chorus penned by Michaels.  DeVille was largely selected for the band based on his cool riffs and party attitude.Your Mama Don't DancePoison take the 1972 Loggins and Messina song and makes it their own in this fourth single released from the album.  The song's lyrics highlighting the generation gap of the 50's and 60's between parents and their rebellious teenagers was a perfect fit for Poison's image.Every Rose Has Its ThornThis ballad is Poison's sole number 1 hit.  The inspiration for it came when Bret Michaels called his girlfriend from a laundromat and heard a male voice in the background.  He was crushed, but went back into the laundromat and wrote the song right then.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Pump Up the Volume by MARRS (from the motion picture “My Stepmother Is an Alien”)This comedy starring Dan Aykroyd, Jon Lovitz, and Kim Bassinger may have been a flop, but the song was quite popular. STAFF PICKS:Mystify by INXSRob leads off the staff picks with the fifth and final single from the "Kick" album.  Backed by a honky tonk-style piano and prominent finger-snapping, the song starts with a bluesy riff followed by a more straightforward rock sound.  INXS originally was comprised of three Farriss brothers, but they were down to Andrew and Tim Farriss by this time.  I'm an Adult Now by Pursuit of HappinessWayne's staff pick is a hidden gem from Canada.  This humorous single alternates between spoken verses and a sung chorus that capture the worries that plague the singer as he deals with becoming an adult and embracing adult problems.  It peaked at number 6 on the alternative music charts.   Wild Wild West by Escape ClubMike brings us an English band with a song written by eight different people, including Stevie Wonder and Bootsy Collins.  This song has the distinction of being the only British band to have a number 1 hit in the US without charting in the UK.  "Headin' for the nineties, living in the wild, wild west."Where Is My Mind by PixiesLynch closes out with a signature song from the Pixies.  The inspiration for this grunge song began with an underwater diving experience, and the lyrics convey disconnection.  The Pixies were reintroduced to fans after this song appeared in "Fight Club." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Silhouette by Kenny G.Bruce sneaks a soft sax piece from Kenny G. onto the playlist to exit this week's podcast.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast, where each week I recommend four films I think you should check out. This week, I've picked a mix of holiday movies that range from heartwarming to hilariously chaotic. Whether you're looking for some nostalgia, laughs, or a little Christmas chaos, these films have something to offer. First up is…One Magic Christmas (1985)This film has a quiet charm that's perfect for the holiday season. Starring Mary Steenburgen, it tells a story of family, second chances, and finding the true spirit of Christmas. What's interesting about the movies is how grounded it feels, even with its supernatural elements. One of my favorite bit of casting in this film is Harry Dean Stanton, who plays a guardian angel, a role that feels tailor-made for his calm, understated presence.Mixed Nuts (1994)This is a screwball Christmas comedy that might not have gotten the love it deserved when it came out. Directed by Nora Ephron, it has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, and even a young Adam Sandler. The movie is set at a suicide crisis hotline office during the holidays, which makes for plenty of chaotic, offbeat humor. The film's quirky tone might feel unusual, but if you stick with it, there are a lot of funny moments. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning, featuring Louis Armstrong's version of “Christmas in New Orleans” and an original song by Sandler, among many others. The Ref (1994)With an apt working title of, Hostile Hostages, this dark comedy, which stars Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey is one of those Christmas movies that focuses on dysfunction. Leary plays a thief who ends up stuck with a bickering married couple on Christmas Eve, and the results are sharp, biting, and weirdly festive. It is a strange combo, but The Ref somehow manage to balance its humor with just enough heart. Trapped in Paradise (1994)This one leans more into the slapstick side of comedy, with Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey as three brothers who get caught up in a bank heist in a small town during Christmas. The small-town setting adds a proper holiday feel, but the movie's about as chaotic as you'd expect with this cast. Although weird, the chaos is not centered around Cage for a change. He gives a grounded performance. Nicolas Cage has said in interviews that filming this movie was a challenge due to constant rewrites and freezing temperatures on location in Ontario, Canada. Despite the problems on the set, the end result, has a charm that makes it worth revisiting. Those are my recommendations for the holiday season. They are four holiday movies that have a solid mix of magic, dysfunction, and comedy. I hope you'll give one (or all) of them a shot this season. Let me know what you think, and I'll see you soon for more recommendations on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! The great Jon Lovitz talks about comedy, acting, stand-up comedy, dogs, The Groundlings, Managers, A league of Their Own, The Simpsons, The Critic, and the serendipity of show business.  Bio: Jon Lovitz has been one of the best known comedians for the last thirty years. He got his start acting in High School plays and developing his skills at the University of California, Irvine where he earned a B.A. in Drama. He also studied acting with Tony Barr at the Film Actors Workshop. At the advice of Tony Barr, Jon decided to concentrate solely on comedy. He began taking classes with the famous improv comedy group, “The Groundlings” in 1982. One year later, after being accepted into “The Sunday Company”, Jon got his first acting job on the television show “The Paper Chase: the Second Year”. Thinking he was on his way, he promptly quit his job at a clothing store…and became a messenger. The next three years – nothing!!! Then, in September of 1984, he was accepted into the main company at “The Groundlings”.On March 28, 1985, “The Groundlings” appeared on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” where Jon premiered his character “Tommy Flanagan of Pathological Liars Anonymous”. Following the introduction of this persona, Jon got an agent, and booked a movie, a series, a voice over for a cartoon, and “Saturday Night Live”. Jon has been working non-stop since. He was nominated for an Emmy his first two years on “Saturday Night Live”. While on SNL, he became known for his characters “Tommy Flanagan of the Pathological Liars Anonymous” (“Year, that's the ticket”), “Master Thespian”, “Hanukkah Harry”, and “the Devil”. He has appeared in over 40 films, including “Big”, “A League of Their Own”, “The Wedding Singer”, “High School High”, “Small Time Crooks”, “Rat Race”, “The Producers”, “Eight Crazy Nights”, “The Benchwarmers”, “Grown Ups 2”, “The Ridiculous 6”,  among many others. He has also worked with acclaimed directors such as Penny Marshall, Rob Reiner, Jerry Zucker, and Woody Allen.  He one of a handful of actors used regularly in almost all his movies by Adam Sandler. This year, in 2024, he just completed the lead character in the film “The Toast” and will be appearing in “Happy Gilmore 2” starring Adam Sandler.Along with his comedy, Jon is well known for his distinctive voice. He was the lead voice for the character “Jay Sherman” in the acclaimed cult cartoon series, “The Critic”. He has also appeared in twelve episodes of “The Simpsons”, even creating the character of Marge Simpson's boyfriend, “Artie Ziff” (who sounds suspiciously like Jay Sherman). Jon has also appeared on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in Neil Simon's play “The Dinner Party”,  taking over the lead role from Henry Winkler. He has sung (yes, he can sing!) at Carnegie Hall three times (including “Great Performances: Ira Gershwin at 100: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall) and sung the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium and the U.S. Open. He also sang with English rock star, Robbie Williams at the Royal Alpert Hall and appears on his album, “Swing While You're Winning!”He currently is performing his new musical comedy show, “From the Shower to the Stage” with celebrated musical conductor and arranger, Randy Waldman. Randy has been Barbra Streisand's personal pianist for the last 36 years and is her current musical conductor as well.Jon has also had an illustrious television career. He was the first famous guest star on the hit show “Friends”. In the same week, he appeared on an episode of Seinfeld. Jon also has had recurring roles on “Hot in Cleveland”, “Las Vegas”, “Two and a Half Men”, “Hawaii Five-O”, and “New Girl”.Editing Notes: Jon Lovitz episode seem to go on and on. Jon won't stop talking. Interested in how you think it is. I think I talk too much about wanting to have sex with Kate Upton. I do it TWICE.  (Kate Upton might not be famous anymore) Funny?  If not,  feel free to cut it.

By the way, that list barely begins to cover it. They still bring in the biggest headlining comics on the continent including, Jon Dore, Jay Pharaoh, Mark Forward, Nathan Macintosh, Deb Digiovani, DJ Demeeers, man these lists could keep going on forever. The club is also home to the Winnipeg's Funniest Person with a Day Job competition. A contest that's seen the likes of Paul Rabluiskus, Aisha Alfa, John B Duff and more compete and has become a deep seated showcase in the province. My guest began working at the comedy club in 2007 and quickly became a mainstay of the establishment. So much so that 2 years later, when the co-owner and manager Ross Rumberg passed away, it was an easy choice to ask Tyler to step in.Since then the club has seen steady and persistent growth and innovation. It's not every club you go to, that has consistently full houses on Tuesday's and Wednesdays, let alone the regularly packed weekend shows. Rumor's unique approach to booking acts and selling tickets has contributed to it being constantly listed as one of the top comedy clubs in North America alongside The World Famous Hollywood Improv, Gotham and The Comedy Store. But it's not just critics and list makers that shout the club's praises. I've joked that this podcast could be called the I love Rumors podcast because my conversations with guests faithfully evolve into singing the club's praises. My guest is an avid supporter of stand-up comedy in Canada and many comedians, including myself, owe a bulk of their success to this human being. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Before "Matilda the Musical," "Madeline" and "Coraline," there was Danny DeVito's 1996 adaptation of Roald Dahl's "Matilda," a film the entire Shat Crew enjoyed — for very different reasons. Ash was the most familiar with "Matilda," having seen it in theaters. Gene had read other Dahl books and knew what to expect. Dick, once again, confused it with another movie. And that devolved into the tangential conversations you'd expect from the Shat Crew: What constitutes child abuse? Did J. K. Rowling rip off Roald Dahl? Which kid in the movie is cutest? Was Bruce Bogtrotter a hero because was fat? Or was he a hero who happened to be fat? Was Trunchbull "Eastern Bloc?" Was Matilda a bully? Did Miss Honey's secret really qualify as "dark?" It was all up to debate. As was the question of whether DeVito's choices worked. One thing's for sure, his casting was spot-on, wrangling comedic talent like Paul Reubens, Jon Lovitz and Rhea Perlman to score this movie some serious Weird Points.
