An overworked, burnt-out air-traffic controller, Jack Chester (John Candy) is put on a mandatory summer break. He decides to take his family to Florida for some much-needed rest and relaxation. Things seem positive at first, but as each day passes, things steadily get worse. After a minor boating accident, Jack befriends Scully (Rip Torn) and improves his sailing ability and his self-confidence. When Al Pellet (Richard Crenna) threatens to take the remainder of the Chester's vacation away, you better bet that this will be settled at the regatta. RTS embraces a four-week beach vacation. Collin and La-Mar use their astute powers of observation to make sure everything looks good and real. They feel real! Don't be a squid stick and go have some fun with this film. Enjoy it with Scully's catch of the day.

I'd Rather Be Reading
Mary Kay Andrews on Her Secret to Longevity and How to Use Setting or Place as a Character In a Bestselling Novel

I'd Rather Be Reading

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2024 28:05

We're continuing to add to your beach read pile today with another fiction pick I couldn't get enough of: Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews, which is out May 7. Mary Kay is so talented at making the setting or the place of her books as a character in the novel, and she certainly does that in this latest book with “the Saint,” a landmark hotel on the coast of Georgia. Traditions run deep here, but scandals run even deeper. “The Saint” is shorthand for the St. Cecelia, and if you grew up coming to this hotel, you were referred to as “a Saint”; if you came from the wrong side of the river, you were “an Ain't.” In the book we meet Traci Eddings, who was one of those outsiders; her family wasn't rich or connected enough to vacation at the Saint. She did work at the Saint, however, for one summer, and she married the boss' son. In this book we find her the widowed owner of the hotel, attempting to get the Saint back to its glory days, even though she's got a mountain of opposition standing in her way. She's got one summer season to turn it around, but then, new information about a drowning that happened long ago at the hotel threatens to come to light, and then a tragic death of one of the Saint's own brings Traci to the brink of despair. It's a love story, it's a mystery, and it's definitely worth a place on your TBR pile. Mary Kay Andrews is such a talented writer—she's a New York Times bestseller and her hit books are too numerous to name, but I'll try: The Homewreckers, The Newcomer, Hello, Summer, Sunset Beach, The High Tide Club, The Beach House Cookbook, The Weekenders, Beach Town, Save the Date, Ladies' Night, Spring Fever, Summer Rental, The Fixer Upper, Deep Dish, Savannah Breeze, Hissy Fit, Little Bitty Lies, and Savannah Blues, and I know there are many others that I left out. She is actually a former journalist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and lives in Georgia; Mary Kay Andrews is actually a pen name she adopted in 2002—her real name is Kathy Hogan Trocheck—and (I find this so interesting!) her pen name is inspired by the names of her children, Mary Kathleen, so Mary K, and Andrew, so Andrews. I love details like that. I have lived in the South for 15 years this year, and I really resonate with Mary Kay Andrews' Southern-flavored stories, but they're relatable and totally compelling to anyone, anywhere, as her books at their heart deal with the human element.   Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews

This week's episode is about everything John Q Public loves (and for the record, we at "That's Outrageous" do NOT love the term "John Q Public" but it works in this context). First we talk about the absolutely delightful discovery of a Burger King frozen in time in a Delaware mall. Then we cover the multi-deck brawl that broke out on a Carnival Cruise at 2am (the best time to brawl) and we take a guess at the age of the oldest flight attendant. But the guessing does not end there! Crissy quizzes Anne on some fun yet trivial, summer trivia. See if you do better than Anne. And finally we discuss the John Candy popcorn movie, "Summer Rental". How have we gone nearly 2 years without discussing John Candy is a head scratcher unto itself. But the time has finally come for this great man to get his due. This one's got Candy, Rip Torn and Richard Crenna - what could possibly go wrong? We hope you enjoy this episode and as John Candy would say, "anchor's away" (he didn't say that but he could have since a sailing regatta features prominently in this movie. Taking some artistic license). crissy & anne --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/crissy-shropshire/message

Summer is here!!! While we didn't have much of a spring in the BLA - which is something I think most folks are ok with - we are a full-go right into summer. The weather has been great, the boats are getting back on the lake, we're seeing many more smiling faces around the community, and most importantly the towns are starting to fill up! It's been so great seeing people shopping, biking on the trails and just enjoying the outdoors. Saying that... we felt it was the perfect time to have our Summer Rentals episode! From boats and jet skis to yard games to golf carts and UTVs, and all the way to house rentals, the Lakes Area rental companies really do offer it all! To represent the BLA rental scene, we had out ol' pal Travis Nelson from Lakes Area Recreational Rentals on the show to talk about what he has to offer with his Golf Carts, as well as some of the other rental companies he partners with. Speaking of his Golf Carts tho, these aren't normal Golf Carts. They are DECKED OUT! Not only will you be ballin' in an electric green color cart, it is also loaded with features like a digital screen, reverse cam, bluetooth sound system and 14" inch wheels! On the episode he speaks on all of that, and so much more in regards to why he felt it was a good time to jump into the golf cart rental game. Annnnd, as we mentioned above, the guys have known Trav for a long time so of course they had to reminisce on some old times (including some extremely entertaining stories). To say this episode had a lot of throwing Jacob under the bus would be an understatement. While he was already a little salty heading into this episode, he (nor Trav, Colton or Isaiah) held anything back. There were some bleeps in this one lol. In all honesty though, it was awesome finally getting Travis on the show. This has been talked about for over a year, and we all felt now was the perfect time. Also, as mentioned in this podcast, while Trav was the in-studio guest, there are so many local rentals in the area for pretty much any summer activity you can imagine. It's halfway to summer, so this week Shawn and Colin decided we needed a little R&R on the beach. So we brought along our podcasting pal Frank Driscoll (Frankfully Honest) to check out the fictional Citrus Cove, Florida in the 1980's classic 'Summer Rental'. We discuss all those topics that other podcasts are afraid to touch like how to properly hard boil an egg, modern day pirates, wonderfully pompous regatta villains, two things that are far better than power tools, the legitimacy of that air cast, confrontations over lobster, the time capsule that is this movie, the brilliance of John Candy and so much more. Is this a film that people have been sleeping on? Who knew Rip Torn has been in Shawn's life for 35 years? Is it still good? Tune in to find out!5 Star reviews help drive us up the charts. Merry merry, Mary's! RuPaul and Company are queening out for Christmas on VH1 in a campy, kooky and occasionally filthy send-up of Hallmark holiday movies. Ru iconically appears alone in front of a green screen for most of her screen time, but acts her holiday heart out. There's a cavalcade of Drag Race alum, from first outs Jaymes Mansfield and Victoria Porkchop Parker in lead supporting roles to both Latrice and Mayhem in separate bus related cameos. Brooke Lynn Hytes does her best Russian Canadian, Ginger finds the Sharon Gless, Peppermint drives a taxi and then there's Jan, who's great, of course, because we love Jan. We spend quite a bit of time on a Justin Hartley related rabbit hole, sort of discuss the hubbub around the Season 14 Meet the Queens (but we'll probably save that for Patreon), eventually find a connection to 1985's “Summer Rental” and even work an “A League of Their Own” moment of appreciation into the conversation. Midsommar vs. Summer Rental What people seek in sitting down to a movie varies from person to person, & sometimes it depends on how our day/week/year is going.  Like comfort food, comfort tv/movies are familiar & safe when our day to day may not always be that.  When you feel the need:  indulge!! Which is our plan in this episode looking at movie versions of The Cure vs. Presidents of The United States of America as opposing methods of making us happy, if at least forget about our day Note:  Richard Crenna from Summer Rental died in 2003, bringing death toll of crew to 4.

If you watched the Extra Credit, you got John Candy matching wits with a bear and Dan Aykroyd.
