From Beyond the Stars by Murray Leinster. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. One of the questions we hear quite often is, Why did so many science fiction authors use pen names? There were actually several reasons. Magazine editors usually didn't want a single issue to look as though it had been written by just one person, even if one author had supplied several excellent stories. Writers also sold stories to competing magazines, experimented with different styles, or simply wanted the flexibility of publishing under multiple names. Today's story is a perfect example. If you pick up the June 1947 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories, you'll see that From Beyond the Stars is credited to Will F. Jenkins, one of the many pen names used by William Fitzgerald Jenkins—the author we know today as Murray Leinster. So why didn't he simply use Murray Leinster? Because the same issue already featured another Murray Leinster story, The Boomerang Circuit. Publishing both stories under the same byline would have made it obvious that one writer dominated the magazine. But there's another twist. A third story in that very issue, The Nameless Something, is credited to William Fitzgerald, another variation of his own name. The result? Of the seven stories published in the June 1947 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories, three were written by the same man—William Fitzgerald Jenkins. By using three different bylines, the magazine appeared to showcase a wider range of authors, while readers unknowingly enjoyed three stories from one of science fiction's most prolific and influential writers. Re-Animator (1985) was chosen by new show supporter Rhys — and what a debut pick it is. Directed by Stuart Gordon in his feature film debut, the movie became one of the defining cult horror films of the 1980s. Based loosely on H.P. Lovecraft's serialized story Herbert West–Reanimator, Gordon initially envisioned it as a stage play and later as a television series before realizing it would work best as a feature film. Shot on a modest budget of around $900,000, the production was backed by Charles Band's Empire Pictures, a studio known for embracing the stranger side of horror and science fiction. The creative team leaned into excess and black comedy, pushing the boundaries of gore and taste in a way that both shocked and delighted audiences.Filming took place over 18 days in Los Angeles, with Gordon assembling a cast of relatively unknown actors — including Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott, and Barbara Crampton — who would go on to become icons of cult horror cinema. Once Cinquisitor Ethan recovered from his exposure to resonation he and Professor Andrea conducted an interview with film editor Lee Percy, who was responsible for editing 1986's "From Beyond," as well as several other notable films. Our second episode focused on the films of Stuart Gordon brings us to FROM BEYOND (1986). Troy Guinn joins John Hudson and I as we flip on the Resonator to see the unseen, squishy horrors hiding in the dark. The uncut version of the film has only been widely available since the 2007 DVD release and we discuss some of the things that were spit onto the cutting room floor. The film sports a fantastic cast with Barbara Crampton and Jeffery Combs returning from REANIMATOR with the addition of Ken Foree they form a crime investigation team that gets far more than sane people are ready to accept. We examine the film's story structure and the clever scripting that allows for escalating weirdness without compromising the characters. The wild cinematography is discussed as is the use of colored lighting to represent the shift into visions of the hidden monsters all around us.
