Welcome to Filling in the Blanks: A Movie Review Podcast with My Father! Every week, my dad and I will watch a movie and try to talk about it. But sometimes he forgets details about the movie he just watched. I'm here to help fill in the blanks. Join us a
In this episode, Ned and Em review West Side Story (2021), a musical remake directed by Steven Spielberg! Ned fondly remembers the original film adaption, even claiming to be a gang member himself (he is not), and Em has no recollection. Oh, how the tables have turned. Listen as they discuss why long movies like this need intermissions, some of Ned's favorite songs, and how they think this will perform at the Oscars. P.S. We recorded this episode before the Oscars, so we were wrong! Disclaimer from Em: We talk about race and colorism in this episode since the original 1961 film includes several actors in brownface. This is a wrong that this remake is trying to rewrite with diverse and authentic casting. While we are sharing our authentic reviews and reaction to this film, we are both white and not qualified to have an opinion on the serious discussion of authentic representation of Latinx in media. For this reason, we brush through this topic but don't stir. This week, Ned and Em review KIMI (2022). Headphone listeners...beware. This movie review is all over the place when it comes to audio levels because these usually composed co-hosts are not so civil this time. And whenever Ned gets passionate about a topic, he claps to make his point. (Note from Em: Editing this podcast recording of my father is my Joker origin story.) Who knew a movie about a home assistant device would cause so much fighting?! Other fun things in this episode include Ned's inability to grasp the basic concept of "noise-canceling" headphones and Em struggling to move the conversation along. Make sure to give this episode a listen :) Follow us on Twitter @FillingPodcast or email us at fillingintheblankspodcast@gmail.com Music in this episode: https://www.purple-planet.com
The 94th Academy Awards are coming up on Sunday, so Ned and Em wanted to make their predictions for this big night in Hollywood known to the public! Together, they have only seen about 7 of all the movies that have been nominated, so in this episode, you can expect some educated guessing is taking place. Make sure to follow us on Twitter @FillingPodcast to find out how well (or how poorly) they guessed! This week, Ned and Em take a trip to 1925 Montana (or New Zealand) to review the oscar-nominated film The Power of the Dog. We has a lot of fun trying to dissect this movie and we argued what exactly the name means. But it references the bible, which we know nothing about, so we are probably wrong! If you know what the name actually means, send us a message on Twitter or an email, please! We recorded this episode before Sam Elliot made news over his unsavory review so here is our official podcast response: "It's a little weird that he is so passionate about this movie. Why didn't he just pull a Spike Lee and say it wasn't his cup of tea?" Who doesn't love con artists in a 1940s carnival? What about a stacked cast of Bradley Cooper, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Cate Blanchett, and more? And even better, all of this is in a movie directed by the great Guillermo del Toro! I think Ned and Em are about to join another fan club... For the 27th episode, we review the Best Picture Oscar nominee Nightmare Alley and we have a great time doing it. We do get distracted a few times in this episode, but I thought it would be fun to keep those in. So listen to hear Ned get distracted by a TV commercial like a child. Also, he talks about his day while Em takes a break looks something up on Wikipedia! This week, Ned and Em become official members of the Bod Odenkirk fan club by watching the 2021 masterpiece, Nobody! Bob isn't just some guy kicking butt, he is our favorite guy. In this episode, we talk about what we like about this genre of film, what we expect out of it (or don't expect), as well as the very cool soundtrack of this film. We also go through a lot of trivia, so shoutout to the IMDb trivia section. The day has finally come! This week, Ned and Em review the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die (2021). Ned is a huge fan of James Bond and Em...well...Ned has been asking to watch this since it premiered. Actually, we have been talking about this movie since 2019, but here we are now, six delays in the movie release later. Ned gives his thoughts on Daniel Craig as James Bond, compared to previous actors in the same role, and we start thinking about what's next for this iconic character. But don't worry, you don't have to watch every James Bond movie to watch this one. If you know how guns work, you should be good! This week, Ned and Em review The Last Duel (2021) directed by Ridley Scott. This movie performed poorly at the box office and I'm guessing the pandemic had something to do with it, but Mr. Scott blames kids being on their dang phones. But did the film impress us, the most notable movie review podcast? We share some laughs in this episode, despite this being a very dark movie about fighting to the death about assault allegations in the middle ages. And you can hear a special guest, Diane, in the background at times to chime in! Thanks for listening! What would you do if the world was ending and also J-Law had the worst bangs you have ever seen? Don't Look Up (2021) asks these very important questions. This week, Ned tries to introduce the podcast. Unsuccessfully of course, so Em once again does all the heavy lifting. (Can you tell who edits and writes up these podcast descriptions.) We also spend a lot of time in this episode talking about how Brad Pitt should be here. This highly anticipated, star-studded cast was not enough for Ned! Anyways, we talked about our feelings about this type of move, our expectations, and more! PS. I changed my rating slightly...you can view my letterboxd review here: https://letterboxd.com/lizardpeople/film/dont-look-up-2021/ Follow us on Twitter @FillingPodcast or email us at fillingintheblankspodcast@gmail.com Music in this episode: https://www.purple-planet.com
Welcome back, skippers! This week, Em and Ned talk about the latest Disney ride turned into Disney Movie. In this episode, Ned does a long bit trying to convince everyone he worked at Disneyland (he did not), and Em takes a bit of a tangent to talk about National Treasure: Book of Secretes (2007). So when it comes to disrupting the Filling in the Blanks flow, I'd say we are even. This is a great episode so listen in for a laugh. All aboard the Jungle Cruise! If you are a cool kid who likes to shred, we got the movie for you! In this episode, Ned and Em review North Hollywood (2021), which is a movie about dreaming of being a pro skater. And just like Vince Vaughn, I'm out here spitting random facts to fill the time. We thought we didn't have much to say about this one, but we did fill up a whole 19 minutes. Enjoy, and thanks for listening! Follow us on Twitter @FillingPodcast or email us at fillingintheblankspodcast@gmail.com Music in this episode: https://www.purple-planet.com
We are back from our hiatus to cover a not very good movie starring current public enemy number one, Jake Gyllenhaal! (But Ned doesn't want me to talk about that and get too "political" on here.) This Netflix movie was shot in 11 days and it shows. Anyways, it's been over a month since we uploaded so we wanted to share some good podcast content with you to celebrate the holidays. And here is a life hack; if you listen to this podcast while eating some turkey, it's like you are at Thanksgiving dinner with us! So cool! Thank you all for listening! The schedule might change, but Filling in the Blanks is switching over to a bi-monthly uploading schedule. In this episode, Ned and Em take on a heavier movie... We watched the 2020 Acadamy Award-Winning film, Promising Young Woman. Warning to the audience, this movie covers some hard topics such as sexual assault and suicide, so keep this in mind before you listen. Also, I did edit about 10 whole minutes out in the middle because we were just fighting instead of actually doing this podcast. So if you sense tension and frustration, that's probably it! Anyways, we managed to squeeze in some fun, lighthearted bits while we talk about a very depressing movie, so hope you enjoy them! Thanks for listening! In this very special episode, we are joined by Diane, Em's mom, therefore making Filling in the Blanks also a family business! The three of us watched the first Bossy Baby together back in 2017 - and loved it - so we thought we should all come together for our review of the sequel! 2/3 of us have lots of love for this animated franchise and you can probably guess which one of us doesn't care. This was a really fun movie and it was an amazing excuse to finally get my Mom on the podcast. (And if you like her on the podcast, let us know so we can bring her back again!) Thanks for listening! For our 18th episode, Em and Ned "watched" the latest horror blockbuster, Malignant (2021). And I put watched in quotations because...well listen to find out why. Em is a big fan of director James Wan and Ned wanted to watch it because it was new. Says a lot about our priorities in life. Anyways, this was a fun mainstream horror and although we struggled to review it, we definitely recommend it to all horror fans out there! Thanks for listening! This week, Em and Ned discuss the Acadamy Award-nominated film News of the World (2020), starring everyone's favorite man in Hollywood, Tom Hanks! Not only does this movie, which takes place post-civil war, make a strategic connection to the current political landscape, but I think it makes a pretty strong argument for replacing all news anchors with Tom Hanks. Since this is a pretty acclaimed film, we talk about the good performances, the yee-haw soundtrack, and our thoughts on Westerns as a genre. (The genre should include the 2003 movie Holes and Em must make the argument why every time "western" is mentioned. Sorry not sorry.) Thanks for listening! This week, Ned and Em review Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)! Ned chose to watch this movie because it features two of his favorite people; Ryan Reynold and Selma Hayek. It was not until after renting it that Em realized this was a sequel and never watched the first one...and this is not the first time that happened either. There are a lot of sequels nowadays, it's hard to keep up! Ned is chaotic and doesn't think you need to watch an original before the sequel. Whose side are you on? Anyways, this movie is a silly little action flick and it was very fun to talk about! Hope you like this episode :) Thanks for listening! 15 episodes in, can you believe it!! This week, Ned and Em watched the 2021 Hugh Jackman blockbuster, Reminiscence, which is a neo-noir film all about remembering the past. So the real question here is, how well do we remember this movie? In this review, we talk about a lot of other movies and potential references in Reminiscence, so we do get lost along the way a bit, but that's all good because we had a fun chat. Make sure to give this podcast a listen if you want to hear our thoughts on this sci-fi genre and our favorite Huge Jacked Man! Thanks for listening! Welcome to another episode of Filling in the Blanks where Em and Ned watch another superhero movie despite always talking about how they don't care for superhero movies. What can we say, we can't resist a brand new flick! We talk about The Suicide Squad, not to be confused with Suicide Squad, although we haven't seen that one and simply don't care. We share our favorite characters, what we look for in this type of movie, and what we don't like. And make sure to stay to the end because I recorded my Dad doing an impression that I can't stop laughing at! Thanks for listening! We are coming back from a week off to give you a very exciting episode. Ned has been waiting a long time to see this one....it's A Quiet Place Part II (2020)! We watched the first Quiet Place together and are very glad we started this podcast just in time to review this one. (Also, important to note, Cillian Murphy is not actually our cousin, we just think it's funny to say that we are related to everyone with the last name Murphy. Please humor us.) This episode actually contains some very thoughtful commentary about this movie franchise and sequels as a whole. But no matter our rating, this movie will go down in cinematic history as a pandemic film since it premiered in March 2020 but we are only seeing it now. Thanks for listening! Em & Ned saw a movie in theaters! Wow, have we missed the movie going experience. And movies are coming back just in time for our new podcast! Thanks AMC :) We do not spoil the movie because I think Mr. Night would not like that and I do recommend seeing it in theaters! My dad on the other hand....well. Whose opinion are you going to trust? Also, I made my first big podcasting booboo and recorded sound from the wrong microphone! Sorry about that and thanks for still listening! Welcome to the first ever Filling in the Blanks Double Feature, where we do a rapid fire review of two movies we did not like at all. Please don't actually watch these in a double feature...they are very different and don't go well together. We watch a lot of bad movies for this podcast, so we thought we might as well squeeze some content out of them with this new format. Since this is our first ever double feature, we have no idea what we are doing. We bounce around from movie to movie quite often, so please try to stick with us as we review each movie very honestly. Tell us what you think of this weird episode format and recommend us to watch some movies so we don't ever have to do this again! Can you believe it? We made it to 10 episodes! In this episode, Em and Ned discuss the 2018 film Leave No Trace and we have a lot of nice things to say about this movie that really makes you think! Seriously. Ned was in deep thought throughout our viewing, I've never seen that happen before. Anyways, we talk about some of our favorite performances, a rotten tomato record, and also beekeeping! We would have more to say about beekeeping, but Ned did not want to watch any beekeeping tiktoks. Shame on you, Ned! Help us celebrate this 10 episode achievement and send us movies for review! Unfortunaltey, we will not do Rugrats in Paris. Sorry. Follow us on twitter @FillingPodcast or email us at fillingintheblankspodcast@gmail.com Music in this episode: https://www.purple-planet.com
In the 9th episode, we discuss the 2021 comedy film Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar. If you like Kristen Wiig, then you are in for a real treat! Listen as Em connects some dots about an early pandemic celebrity social media blunder, while Ned listens in complete confusion because he is still banned from twitter and doesn't have the slightest clue what has been happening over the past year. Bear with us as we go on quite a few tangents, including Ned's hot take about the midwest and a conversation about the raw power of a banana. We may have different opinions on this one, but it was so fun to watch this soon to be comedy classic! Thanks so much for listening and please send us recommendations for what we should review next! This week, Em and Ned review No Sudden Move (2020), another movie we found on HBOMax! They should really consider sponsoring our podcast for the amount of advertising we give them. But this movie is packed with a lot of great talent, so we are so excited to share our thoughts on this thought provoking film. This week, Em and Ned share their thoughts on the 2021 neo-noir crime thriller, The Little Things. This all star cast is comprised of 3 Oscar winners, but is the movie worth the hype? Or do we agree with the Rotten Tomatoes mixed reviews? Listen to find out! We really go above and beyond in this episode because my Dad gets off track many times to share his thoughts on a few other movies! So yes, this podcast is a little on the longer side for us since it is over 20 minutes, but it is well worth it with the amount of movie recommendations we provide. This week, Em and Ned review the 2020 film Fatale starring Hilary Swank. We love miss Swank's work but this movie....eh well, you will find out our thoughts in this 17 minute podcast! But the big question...Is this movie Girlboss? In this episode, we share our thoughts on what it means to be a Girlboss and if this movie fits into the trope! It's lights up on Washington Heights, for our latest episode of Filling in the Blanks! This one is for you musical fans out there. I'm actually surprised that I got Ned to watch it in the first place since he hates musicals. I'm even more surprised at the end of this podcast! Anyways, we cover a lot here; we share our thoughts on Lin-Manuel Miranda, the performances in this movie, a quick review of a bad movie we watched, and even discuss a film school glossary word! We are trying new things on the Filling in the Blanks podcast and watched a Horror movie this time! But it all comes down to this one big question, did Ned like the movie? Well, give this quick 15 minute episode a listen to find out. This is another fun recording, full of your favorite father daughter movie commentary duo saying "That didn't make sense" over and over again. We are only 4 episodes in and that is already a very common phrase on the pod... But wait! There's more! Stay tuned to the very end for a sweet ASMR surprise, courtesy of Nedward Murphy. Here we are again with a brand spanking new "cast" as Ned likes to call it, this time about the 2020 film Love and Monsters! In this episode we talk about our love for movie dogs (this film features an Australian Kelpie we absolutely adore) and we learn a very valuable podcast lesson. My dad confuses this movie heavily with Wristcutters: A Love Story, since he watched that the morning before recording, so now we know not to do that again. But also, I really can't promise anything. He gives that movie a rating here too though! This 20 minute episode is full of tangents and celebrity fun facts, but we always find a way back to the actual purpose of this podcast, to give our review/rating. Em and Ned review the film that swept 2020, Wonder Woman 1984. But like Shania Twain famously said "That Don't Impress Me Much." Listen to us ramble for 18 minutes about how we don't "understand" superhero movies in this week's episode. We cover a lot in that short time though - from the movie magic of stand in actors to plot holes that leave us wondering "what did we just watch?" We even mention about our favorite superhero, Paul Blart Mall Cop! Can you guess how many times my Dad fell asleep during our viewing? Listen to find out! And if by any chance Chloƫ Grace Moretz listens to this podcast, then hi! We are huge fans! We are starting off this podcast strong with a film review in under 15 minutes. You can listen while you are making a sandwich, folding he laundry, or even when you are sitting on the toilet! (Last suggestion is from Ned.)
