Is there any theology in the religion that I grew up in that is meaningful? Or is it just hate with a halo?Today we meet Paul Cram and we're talking about the queer book that saved his life: Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality by John Boswell.Described as “Honest, a little quirky,” Paul is a Twin Cities-based character actor, book lover, and multimedia designer. For over 15 years, he has been performing in films and onstage. He's shared the screen with Woody Harrelson, Cillian Murphy, and Susan Sarandon. He stars in the upcoming film Anniversary, directed by Jim Cole. For the short film To Myself he was nominated for Best Actor at Z-Fest. A voracious reader, Paul launched the monthly “Men-Who-Read” nonfiction book club in 2019 which now has over 85 book lovers. Paul serves as the chair of Education and Outreach with SAG-AFTRA Twin Cities Local.John Boswell's landmark book Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality is credited with launching the field of gay and lesbian studies. Winner of the National Book Award, this study of Christianity's history of homosexuality in the early West revealed the Church's radically different relationship to its gay members, including priests, bishops, and even saints. Then, we contemplate the film's episodic structure, producing tonally distinct chapters that feel indebted both to Homeric and Alighierian epics as well as fantasy storytelling. Finally, we engage with the film's perspectives on death and mass crisis in the 21st century, how it speaks to our moment post-COVID and amidst Israel's ongoing genocide, and asks us to honor and value life in ways unfamiliar and reverent.Watch the trailer for 28 Years LaterListen to Taylor Holmes' reading of Rudyard Kipling's "Boots"Listen to Young Fathers' soundtrack for 28 Years Later....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

The third film in this zombie apocalypse trilogy was once again directed by Danny Boyle & written by Alex Garland who previously worked on the previous 2 films in 2002 & 2007. This film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor - Johnson, Alfie Williams & Ralph Fiennes. In this film, 28 years after the “Rage Virus” wiped out the British Isles, a small village is still prospering despite not having access to the rest of the world. When a man and his young son tread to the infected area, they encounter zombies that have surprisingly evolved into a much more deadly force and seem to be more cult like than rabid monsters. The pair must get back to the village before the tides wipe out their only way back. This film was announced a year after “28 Weeks Later” had been released but due to conflicts of film rights, the film remained in development hell until late 2023. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the first film, was slated to return but ended up taking an executive producer role. Boyle & Garland had also announced that this film was to be shot simultaneously with a sequel, which is now slated for a 2026 release.

Send us a textThis week, on our 108th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends we're looking at Danny Boyle's 2025 summer entry 28 Years Later as well as the two other films that led up to it, 2002's 28 Days Later and 2007's 28 Weeks Later. Mr. Boyle directed the segments one and three, and the second entry was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, The stars of the first movie were Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleason, Megan Burns and Christopher Eccelson. The second movie was a regular who's who of up-and-comers from 2007: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Imogen Poots, Idris Elba, Harold Perrineau with veteran support from Catherine McCormack and Robert Carlysle while the 3rd film is a mix of old pro and newcomers with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell and Ralph Fiennes as supporting players to fresh faced star of the tomorrow Alfie Williams! My solitary guest this week is the mighty Joe Field, author, teacher and pop culture enthusiast. The 28 Days Later trilogy's story unfolds as follows:Zombies Zombies and more Zombies! The first movie tracks the origin of a primate based virus and how it decimates England and turns its population into cannibalistic raging savages within 28 Days. Only a lone bike messenger freshly awakened from a coma and a few other scrappy survivors are able to navigate the treacherous countryside to supposed safety of a military outpost. The underachieving sequel is basically the military versus zombies where the virus has been eradicated due to the infected starving to death, but the virus returns with a vengeance when an asymptomatic mother releases it on her cowardly husband who left her to die during the first outbreak. And the third movie, taking place 28 Years after that, deals with a post-apocalyptic human society living on a small island in Scotland. The islanders are cut off from the rest of the world and surrounded by lands chock o'block full of zombies, including 7 foot tall Alpha Zombies. The people on the island have their own training, customs and way of life. When an island mother comes down with cancer, her 12 year old son takes her out into forbidden land in search of a doctor who can cure her. Are any of these movies in this trilogy worth traversing the outer regions to see in the multiplex? Find out!Watch the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/m2HhutgFhx4

Film journalist and friend of the show Brandon Streussnig returns to discuss Danny Boyle's debut film Shallow Grave, a British riff on the 90s neo-noir template, self-described by Boyle and his collaborators as their take on the Coen's Blood Simple. The film chronicles a trifecta of beautiful, sociopathic yuppies sharing an Edinburgh flat (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, and Ewan McGregor) who unravel after the untimely death of their new roommate and the discovery of a suitcase full of cash. Frenetic, aesthetically bold, and brimming with terrific performances from its cast of newcomers, Shallow Grave stood in stark opposition to the more muted social realism of established British filmmakers of the era like Mike Leigh and Ken Loach and showcased the collaborative power of Boyle, McGregor, screenwriter John Hodge, and producer Andrew Macdonald only a handful of years removed from their landmark feature, Trainspotting. We discuss Boyle's aesthetic inclinations, his history in the theater, and how the cinematic medium can liberate a particular type of artist from the confines of the stage. Then, we unpack the film's stellar trio of performances, its economy of character, and especially McGregor's star-making turn that suggests the greatness he would achieve with Boyle in their next several collaborations. Finally, we explore the film's ire for post-Thatcherite individualism, its attacks on the moral vacuum of the upwardly mobile, the dramatic irony of a film about the corruptability of money even for those who don't need it.In addition, we spend a brief moment looking forward to Boyle's latest film 28 Years Later (a full Bonus episode on the film coming later this week) and what it supposes for Boyle's late period.Follow Brandon Streussnig on Twitter. After 18 long years Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Cillian Murphy are taking us back to the UK and the plight of the infected with 28 Years Later. But before we can catch up with the infected after a few decades, let's go back to where it all began with the original! | 28 Days Later | A group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the "Rage" virus from a medical research lab. When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.
After 18 long years Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Cillian Murphy are taking us back to the UK and the plight of the infected with 28 Years Later. Reaction thus far has been divided, but what do you think? | 28 Years Later | It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.

To 28 Years Later είναι η επιστροφή στον ζόμπι κόσμο της κλασικής ταινίας τρόμου 28 Days Later, δια χειρός και πάλι του σκηνοθέτη Danny Boyle και του σεναριογράφου Alex Garland.
The Godfather trilogy is in the rearview mirror… and the streets are eerily empty. This week, Luke and Chris plunge into the infected, adrenaline-fueled nightmare of 28 Days Later (2002), kicking off a bold new franchise journey. They break down Danny Boyle's genre-redefining horror film from scene one, discussing its radical production style, the haunting use of Winston Castle, Cillian Murphy's iconic (if inconsistent) hair, and the raw emotional stakes at the heart of this apocalyptic story. Along the way, they dig into Alex Garland's writing, the moral rot of Major West, and why the film's second half feels like a descent into something even darker than zombies—us.Plus: behind-the-scenes facts, the real-world virus that inspired the story, and philosophical riffs from Nietzsche and Pauline Kael. The Famous Philosophers Review Modern Film segment returns.Next week: 28 Weeks Later. But for now, rage is the virus—and this episode is your first dose.

28 Years Later is finally here and so we're joined by critic (huh) Brett Arnold (of The New Flesh and Roger & Me podcasts) to break it all down! Will these Infecteds speed to a franchise best opener, or will the lack of Cillian Murphy prove these zombies have no brains? PLUS Pixar's Elio opens and we discuss whether this is about to make The Good Dinosaur look like The Incredibles 2. All that, and a look ahead to Megan 2.0. Classic horror ep! This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading back into the blood-soaked, Rage-infected streets of post-apocalyptic Britain with 28 Weeks Later — the 2007 zombie horror sequel to Danny Boyle's groundbreaking 28 Days Later. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later builds on the legacy of 28 Days Later (which we covered in episode 43), expanding the world of the Rage Virus and the aftermath of a collapsed society. While Danny Boyle didn't direct this time around — due to commitments on Sunshine — he stayed on as executive producer and even directed key sequences himself, including the ferocious opening scene. The original creators — Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter Alex Garland — initially considered a direct sequel called 29 Days Later, potentially continuing the story of Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris's characters. Instead, they pivoted to a broader, bleaker vision: an infected London under military quarantine, a supposed victory against the virus, and the inevitable resurgence of horror. Set weeks after the events of the first film, 28 Weeks Later follows the failed attempt to repopulate a ‘safe zone' in London, guarded by the US Army. As expected in a British zombie film, things go catastrophically wrong. Filming took place in iconic London locations, including Canary Wharf and 3 Mills Studios. A sequence planned for Wembley Stadium had to be shot in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium instead. The film's viral marketing campaign — quite literally — included a huge biohazard warning projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover. The Rage Virus was back. Opening in 2007, 28 Weeks Later landed in over 2,000 US cinemas and took nearly $10 million on its opening weekend. It didn't match the cultural impact of 28 Days Later, but it cemented the franchise as a landmark of modern British horror — helping shape the next wave of post-apocalyptic zombie cinema.28 Weeks Later features a fresh cast, including Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Idris Elba, and a young Imogen Poots. While none of the original characters return, the film builds on the terrifying groundwork Boyle and Garland laid in 28 Days Later — exploring themes of infection, trust, trauma, and institutional failure. The trilogy-that-never-was stalled with 28 Months Later, which entered development hell. But a proper sequel, 28 Years Later, has finally been greenlit, with Danny Boyle returning to direct and Cillian Murphy on board as producer. The Rage Virus isn't done with us yet. If you're searching for podcasts about 28 Weeks Later, 28 Days Later, 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle, zombie movies, the Rage Virus, post-apocalyptic horror, or modern British horror cinema — you've found the right episode. Expect discussion of British zombie films, Rage-infected lore, military horror, abandoned London, and whether 28 Weeks Later holds up next to its predecessor.
Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Once we escaped the boundless oceans that are Cillian Murphy's eyes, a few things occurred to us about 28 Days Later — namely, all of the fascinatingly direct plot parallels with The Walking Dead. We also zoom out to analyze the titanic differences in theme and metaphor between fast zombies and slow zombies. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, 20 states immediately banned or severely restricted abortion while six protected access to it. Since this piece first aired last November, voters in six additional states have amended their constitutions to safeguard abortion rights. But for many women and doctors living in places with strict abortion bans, fear and confusion over these new laws is growing. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi travels to one of those states, Texas, and speaks with doctors who say the restrictive abortion laws are creating unintended consequences, hurting women with desired pregnancies and the people who care for them. With a history spanning 2,000 years and still playing a vital role in global commerce, the oak barrel, as correspondent Bill Whitaker discovers, is much more than just a container. Barrels are a vital ingredient, especially in the production of Bourbon whiskey – giving it all of its distinctive color and much of its taste. Whitaker takes us inside the largest maker of wooden barrels to glimpse the magic and mystique of this essential tradition. Just weeks before Cillian Murphy won the 2024 Oscar for Best Actor in the film “Oppenheimer,” correspondent Scott Pelley sat down with him for a candid interview. Murphy talked about how he transforms for roles, acts on instinct and how his Irish identity has defined him. The bestselling Irish author grew up on a farm set on “50 acres on the side of a hill”. Growing up, she witnessed a harsh, misogynistic country that convinced her she would never marry. Claire shares what she has learned about writing from a litter of newborn piglets. Her works Small Things Like These and Foster have both been made into movies.Claire's stories often take place in the landscape where she grew up — the farms and small towns of Wexford in Southeast Ireland.Claire was the youngest of six children, and when she was born their farmhouse had no running water and few books.Instead, Claire fell in love with horses. As a small child she would go to the wood with her brother, who was a lumberjack.Amongst the chainsaws and workmen, little Claire would drive a harnessed horse from behind, to the roadside, to help clear the heavy trees. And as she grew older, she developed a fierce determination to live life on her own terms. This episode was produced by Alice Moldovan. Conversations Executive Producer is Nicola Harrison.
