On this episode, I spoke to cinematographer Lachlan Milne about his work on Lady in the Lake. Lachlan Milne is an award-winning director of photography, whose work ranges from Academy Award winning dramas to global smash TV series. Milne's work on the acclaimed 2021 film Minari saw him nominated for a Critics Choice Award, Online Film & Television Association Award, and CinEuphoria Award among others. He has twice been awarded by the New Zealand Cinematographers Society for Minari and Love And Monsters. Milne's other film credits include Hunt For The Wilderpeople and Next Goal Wins, both for Academy Award winner Taika Waititi. MORE ABOUT LADY IN THE LAKE: When the disappearance of a young girl grips the city of Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966, the lives of two women converge on a fatal collision course. Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman) is a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as a journalist, and Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) is a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family. Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo's mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger. From visionary director Alma Har'el, Lady in the Lake emerges as a feverish noir thriller and an unexpected tale of the price women pay for their dreams.

Spooky Month continues, but we're moving away from scares into drippy monsters! Thankfully Michael Matthews's Love and Monsters features plenty of comedy and heart, courtesy of star Dylan O'Brien's voice over and a script from Matthew Robinson and Brian Duffield (the latter wrote previous episode Spontaenous). We're big fans of the best good boy, Dog, the way the film handles Joel's relationship with Aimee, and the Oscar-nominated realism of the CGI. In this episode we recap the 2020 movie Love and Monsters staring Dylan O'Brien and Jessica Henwick. This one is a hoot. If you don't know, Courtney has a binder where she keeps tabs for every possible tragic scenario she can encounter. This particular type of apocalypse, however, did not make the binder. This movie was slapstick fun adventure with a thirsty main protagonist who may or may not get the girl at the end. Tune in to find out! Coming of age during a dystopian future can happen, so says the new film LOVE AND MONSTERS (2020) from South African director Michael Matthews. Another movie affected by the COVID pandemic, LOVE AND MONSTERS, a Lionsgate production, was headed for a wide release at theaters only to find its audience on VOD. After destroying a meteor headed to crash on Earth, chemicals from the rockets cause cold blooded creatures to become giant mutants. Joel Dawson (Dylan O'Brien) is a survivor of the apocalypse. He is determined to cross eight-five miles to another prepper bunker where his girlfriend is. Having never left his own bunker, he is off in the wilderness where giant frogs, insects, and mollusks are now at the top of the food chain. LOVE AND MONSTERS stars Dylan O'Brien, Michael Rooker, Jessica Henwick, Ellen Hollman, as well as others in an excellent cast. The screenplay was written by veteran screenwriters Brian Duffield and Matthew Robinson. Receiving excellent reviews by from critics, the movie has been getting a lot of buzz by renters. Dark Discussions takes a look at the movie and gives their thoughts.
Dark Discussions reviewed a hidden gem horror film called https://www.darkdiscussions.com/podcasts/dark-discussions-podcast/episode-256-the-secrets-of-emily-blair-2016/ (THE SECRETS OF EMILY BLAIR (2016)) back on https://www.darkdiscussions.com/podcasts/dark-discussions-podcast/episode-256-the-secrets-of-emily-blair-2016/ (episode 256) of the podcast. The star, Ellen Hollman (LOVE AND MONSTER (2020)), shined in the title role as a possessed woman who's life and soul were in danger. Now in 2020, her career has hit new highs as she is the star of the films, LOVE AND MONSTERS and ARMY OF ONE. With ARMY OF ONE she takes on a hugely physical role that requires her to also carry the film upon her shoulders. Brenner (Ellen Hollman), a retired special ops soldier, and her police officer husband Dillion (Matt Passmore) take a vacation out in small town USA for some hiking and camping. When they discover a cabin in the woods that may be used by gun runners, their lives suddenly are in danger. Brenner is forced to fight for her survival as a game of cat-and-mouse leads her deeper into darkness. In a very physical role, actress Ellen Hollman shows why she was added to the cast of the upcoming MATRIX 4 (2021). ARMY OF ONE is a very dark action thriller that forces a woman to work with the elements around her as she tries to ascertain deliverance. Dark Discussions takes a look at this film while also getting the opportunity to interview Ellen Hollman about her amazingly physical performance.
