Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we have a conversation about what it means to be underappreciated. Not underrated necessarily. But underappreciated. And boy is Don Cheadle underappreciated. The Oscar-nominated actor has been elevating films in supporting roles since the late ‘80s. Our guest today is Mitchell Beaupre, senior editor at Letterboxd. Our B-Sides today include: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Traitor, The Guard, and No Sudden Move. There is also a brief-but-worthwhile tangent on the Scott Caan-directed (!) indie The Dog Problem. Also the Sundance darling Manic from the early 2000s. We discuss Cheadle's incredible ability to listen as an actor. There may not be a better active listener working today. We offer some context into legend Steve Martin (who has a story credit on Traitor) and all of the different things he's done over his illustrious career (and how BIG he was in the ‘70s). There's also the under-usage of Cheadle in The Assassination of Richard Nixon, that half-baked Bourne Identity-inspired score in Traitor, the unfortunate lack of chemistry between Brendan Gleeson and Cheadle in The Guard, and how No Sudden Move is basically perfect and the culmination of so much of what makes Don Cheadle great. And finally, we definitely mention those hysterical Captain Planet bits and how exactly they shot No Sudden Move to get that extreme anamorphic look that makes out the main aesthetic of the film. Here's a short teaser of our Patreon-exclusive podcast series where we will be examining the cinema of Steven Soderbergh. On our main show we are going through his more underrated works, while on our Patreon we are talking about Soderbergh's most prominent movies. This month we are digging into Steven Soderbergh's quite recent outing, No Sudden Move. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about whether Soderbergh is looking to break new ground or if he is happy revisiting the well, how dependent he might have become on the quality of the scripts he directs, the vagaries of using fisheye lenses, oversaturating the narrative with plot and characters and much more! Ed Solomon began his career in college as a joke writer, stand-up comedian, and playwright. While still in college, he was a staff writer for Laverne & Shirley – making him (at the time) the youngest member of the Writers Guild of America. He then spent three years writing the cult Showtime TV series, It's Garry Shandling's Show, before venturing into feature films in the 1980s. He helped create and co-write the critically acclaimed comedies Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (with Chris Matheson). Solomon also worked on a number of hit franchise films, including Men in Black, Charlie's Angels, and then writing the Now You See Me films. Solomon worked on an early version of a Universal The Invisible Man remake, with Johnny Depp. In March 2016 he completed production on Mosaic, a 12-hour long-form TV project for HBO in collaboration with director Steven Soderbergh, This production would mark the first in a series of collaborations with Soderbergh, including the neo-noir film No Sudden Move in 2021, and more recently, the crime series Full Circle, which premiered July 13, 2023. @ed_solomon twitter.com/ed_solomon https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004412/ Connect with your host Kaia Alexander: https://entertainmentbusinessleague.com/ https://twitter.com/thisiskaia Produced by Stuart W. Welcome back, Waypoint + subscribers, to the movies. It's with your generous support that we're able to return to the world of TV and Film just as we're slowly returning to watching movies in actual theaters. Up first however is No Sudden Move, an HBO Max release from director Steven Soderbergh, who is popularly known for his modern remake of Ocean's 11. His new film was partially marketed as a heist film, but quickly reveals itself to be a dark comedy more interested in how race, gender, and wealth intersect more broadly than the particulars of one heist gone wrong. Join Rob, Austin, Patrick, and Cado as they dig deep into what worked, what fell flat, and why the extreme wide angle lenses kinda make sense. Hosted on Acast. We have a guest this week on Scene Stealers! Film critic Kevin Wozniak from KevFlix and fellow member of the Chicago Indie Critics joins Leo and Charles to talk about director Steven Soderbergh's 2021 noir style hit No Sudden Move. It's an episode filled to the brim. We open the vault and discover three very different movies- Leo talks about Roland Emmerich's Universal Soldier, Kevin celebrates Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Charles talks about the short film about Jeremy Lin with 38 at the Garden. Inside the safe is another movie from Steven Soderbergh, whose films are becoming recurring events on Scene Stealers, but only this time it's a heist movie with a lot of characters that can't be trusted. Leo, Charles, and Kevin try to keep it all together and stay still on Scene Stealers.

This week we have another very special and unique guest. I am joined this week by a special friend of mine, the iconic Rana Sobh. Rana is an Arab American actress and model. Her passion for storytelling, interest in psychology and understanding emotion and motivation is heavily influenced by the film “Girl, Interrupted.” She speaks Arabic fluently and has a Bachelors degree in psychology from Oakland University. Syrian actress Amal Arafa, Nadine Njeim and Jim Carrey are her idols and she often imitates their characters. Aside from being on camera, she also works in film/TV production such as HBO Max's “No Sudden Move” starring an all-star talented cast led by Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro, and the Starz original crime drama series BMF, starring Russell Hornsby as well as in entertainment public relations. We sat down for a fun conversation about the psyche of acting, the psychology behind storytelling, what motivates us both as well as Rana's work behind the camera as production crew for several projects that shoot around her area. Screenwriter Ed Solomon on working with smart actors.
Stephen Soderbergh, the director of Out of Sight, Ocean's 11, Erin Brockovich, Magic Mike, and too many other notable films to list directs this HBO Max movie with an amazing cast including Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Amy Seimetz, Brendan Fraser, Julia Fox, Ray Liotta, and quite a few others! He has returned to the crime genre focusing on an absurdly twisted heist taking place in 1950's Detroit with no shortage of twists and double-crosses. Does one of our greatest living directors still have the chops? Find out with my latest review! Host: Geoff Gershon Producer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/

Host George Edelman welcomes Ed Solomon to share how lessons from both success and failure—along with one wild night at an Alaskan Strip Club—have had a hand in shaping the writer he is today. In this episode, we talk about… How Ed's high school experience inspired him to be a writer and why he tells himself he's an imposter daily How shifting from big budget films to smaller specs expanded Ed's creative path How a trip to an Alaskan strip club led Ed to write the play “Strip Club” and how it got him hired for Laverne & Shirley The fallacy about gateways that lead to your career—you make your own path Why Ed considers Men in Black as a series of failures that culminated in success Developing a skill set to learn how to write while you write and learning from every script How Ed approaches storytelling: Remember you're always dealing with point of view even if you don't realize it Know what it means to have a healthy relationship with the audience and always keep in mind what they know Examples of objective vs. subjective points of view Consider your audience as a friendly ally Advice for new writers: Get other people to say your words out loud and listen to it Take your words and mount it, direct it, film it, edit it Take acting, editing, and cinematography classes Watch your very favorite movies and transcribe them—internalize what those writers did What you can learn from transcribing films: How little dialogue you actually need How little stage direction you need How short scenes are and how they do not have a beginning, middle and end but just a middle (usually) The importance of sequences and how things are a juxtaposition of little pieces to form a sequence You really only learn about writing screenplays by writing a bunch of screenplays Why Ed is choosing to keep a beginner's mind until the end Links to Resources: No Sudden Move on HBO max Subscribe to our newsletter for news, contests, deals, and a FREE ebook at https://nofilmschool.com/screenwritingbook. "No Sudden Move" is the latest film from Steven Soderbergh (and is now streaming on HBO Max) that starts with a simple crime and evolves into something much bigger. Actress Amy Seimetz plays Mary Wertz, the wife of Matt Wertz (played by David Harbour), who ends up at the center of a babysitting job for three armed criminals. At the same time, her husband attempts to retrieve a document from his boss for the dangerous men, but of course, things don't go as planned. A filmmaker herself, Amy was kind enough to take some time to talk to us about working with Soderbergh, the other actors, how she made the most of limited screen time, and more! There's a reason Steven Soderbergh's movies are always so unlike whatever movies he's made before. He tells Marc his goal is to take things that have worked in other contexts and turn them into something that doesn't feel like anything else. They talk about how this pertains to Steven's movies like No Sudden Move, Behind the Candelabra and the Ocean's Trilogy. They also discuss making movies on the iPhone, why his retirement didn't stick, and how Contagion holds up against the real thing. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Since 1989 (Sex, Lies & Videotape), filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has been a pioneering voice in American cinema. Part free-wheeling iconoclast, part exacting technician. He joins us this week with the release of his latest film, No Sudden Move (out July 1st via HBO Max). We discuss the challenges of making a movie amid the pandemic (7:35), his ability to push past creative blocks, the importance of 1997's Out of Sight, the seismic impact of his late mentor, Mike Nichols (24:25), and how a formative moviegoing memory (25:28) informed his ideas on the role of storytelling (29:37). Before we go– Steven speaks candidly on the future of movies (36:09) his role in them (40:46).
