Are Black fathers missing? Are they absent? Nope. Not at all. Or at least, not anymore than any other group of people. In this week's episode, we talk about the stereotype that Black fathers are missing or absent from their kids lives. Here are some things we discuss: Where the stereotype comes from Why it's not true Why it's still being perpetuated How we can help change the narrative We also discussed Black congressman and activist, John Lewis, as our Black History Month highlight! Slaves were brought to America by many who claimed Christianity. Then, they were given out-of-context Bible verses to teach them how to stay in their place. Even today, many believers romanticize the old south despite knowledge of the atrocity that took place. It's because of these things that Christianity is sometimes dismissed as just for White people. In this week's episode, we explore the idea of Christianity being a "White Man's Religion", where that came from, and how to fight against it. We also talk about the life of Phillis Wheatley, one of the best known pre-19th century poets and an African-American slave. Her story is tragic and beautiful and nuanced, and it was a privilege to learn about her this week. We hope you'll give it a listen and join this conversation! In this week's episode, we chat about the how and why of celebrating Black History Month this February! Some questions we answer: Why celebrate Black History Month? Is Black history different than American history? How can I celebrate with my family? How do I integrate Black history in my life beyond the month of February? Special shoutouts to our friends Taylor Combs, Carlee Isaac, and our brother Ameres Groves for telling us why they believe celebrating Black History Month is important for all of us in light of our personal contexts. The American Church has a lot to grapple with when it comes to racism, namely, its role in it. Far too often, we take on the attitude of “forget what happened” in the name of moving forward, all the while neglecting the bitter fruit of racism many still experience today. In this episode, we sit down with PhD Student, Taylor Combs, to discuss church history when it comes to racism, how history impacts our present, and what we can do to learn from that history in our pursuit of antiracism today. In response to cries of racism, we often hear some form of the phrase, "We just need to be unified." But often, that response is more about achieving uniformity than seeking true unity. My community is racist. What do I do? It's a valid question. Do you stay? Leave? How do you even begin to initiate grace-filled conversations when you are continually labeled? In this episode, we dive into navigating relationships within racist, non-racist, and antiracist communities. We hope this conversation helps you better implement antiracism in places you spend the most time. Spoiler alert: there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It's an intentional effort that will probably take some time, and we are here to lift you up no matter how long it takes. Have questions, comments, or encouragement for us? How do I teach my kids about racism? Should I even bring it up? Won't it traumatize them? In this episode, we dive into all these questions and more as we guide parents to think about the antiracism fight as starting in their closest circle. Our children are the people who we have the greatest influence over, and while no ideology we teach them is guaranteed to stick, we have to try. We can be part of the change, generations at a time. Ever said something and then immediately wondered, “Was that racist?” If the question comes up, then the answer may be yes. It's easy to say things from a place of kindness and blissful ignorance that bring up old wounds of white supremacy ingrained deep in the fabric of our nation's flag. In this episode, we dive into a hand full of microagressions—statements of indirect discrimination to a racial group. Many of us have said them, many times without even knowing it. So the best thing we can do is learn what they are, why they're hurtful, and intentionally change our language so that rather than upholding subtle racism, we fight it head first. The Black National Anthem and the NFL. Summer's Black Lives Matter reckoning. Defund the Police. Riots. Voter suppression. With the holidays right around the corner, we may be in situations with family and friends where this year in the life of our country comes up in conversation. And with it may come a whole host of discussion about race and its implications in our culture. In this episode, we hope to equip you with the tools to prepare for those conversations and engage in them with grace. As conversations open up, we can practice antiracism by opening a door for people to join us in the pursuit rather than pushing them in to further hatefulness. What does race have to do with the Gospel? Our answer? Everything. We believe that the Gospel, or the good news that Jesus came to the world lived, died, and resurrected, changes everything. That includes our conversations about race. In this episode, we dive into what the Gospel is, how it relates to race, how the Bible teaches us to think about diversity and the sin of racism, and how this should change the way we think about all these subjects. But we couldn't cover it all in one episode. Check out part 1 to hear the framework for this episode. Have questions, comments, or encouragement for us? In this episode, Lauren details her experience being raised in a part of the country still largely segregated. Though that segregation might not be written into law any longer, it certainly adds to the reality that few people are challenged to think outside of their own world. This led to serious blind spots that made themselves known in conversations about race throughout Lauren's childhood. While Lauren's experience isn't every White person's in America, we hope that if you can relate to some of these stories, you will consider what blind spots may still exist in your own heart and mind. Recognizing our own areas of weakness is the first step to strengthening our fight against racism in America. Have questions, comments, or encouragement for us? In this episode, Austin details his honest experience of growing up Black in a White washed community. He shares about what it is like to learn about racism as a young Black boy and how experiencing it affects the way he wants to fight against racism and prejudice today. Austin's story is not the story of every Black person in America. Everyone's experience is different, and every different experience shapes our viewpoints and convictions in unique ways. We hope that as you listen, you might consider using this perspective to broaden your ideas and bring more grace into your conversations about race in America. Everybody and their mother seem to have different definitions of racism. In this podcast, we will dive into a few of those definitions and create a framework for how this show will operate. Here are some questions we will answer in today's show: What is racism? How should we define racism within our own country and context? What is antiracism? How do we practice antiracism? If someone isn't antiracist, does that make them racist? Have questions, comments, or encouragement for us? Head to our website's contact form and send us an email letting us know!
