Thoroughly Equipped Season 2 Episode 38 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has been a hot topic in the economic sphere, but it's actually not limited there. This anti-racist infiltration has made a huge mark in the education realm and now has for the last couple of years gained access to Christian institutions and organizations. Under the last step given to white bridge builders in the Be the Bridge 101 guide, Be the Bridge exposes their desire to fundamentally change the church by defeating the white supremacy within it. How do they believe this work is done? Through Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training But not merely diversifying the leadership, but working toward equity and inclusion of, not only race, but theological views. How might diversity, equity, and inclusion come into your church? Let's dive in… Topics include: How Be the Bridge uses a false historical narrative to urge it's readers to become "Accomplices" within the American Church. How Anti-Racist presuppositions can influence how one sees the Church's role in the Abolitionist Movement The difference between diversity, equity, and inclusion and how they are being used to challenge Headship and Authority in the Church How D.E.I. is ultimately a rebellion against God and Christ's institution of Authority in the Church. Delve into a critical examination of the challenges confronting the modern American Church through the lens of the timeless story of Zacchaeus from Luke 19. Explore the high stakes spiritual dilemma faced by the Church today, paralleled with the significant shift termed "The Great De-Churching." The speaker addresses the phenomenon of people leaving or deconstructing their faith, drawing parallels between the negative religious reactions in the biblical narrative and contemporary responses to those questioning their faith. Discover valuable insights on how to respond and be helpful during the deconstruction process, emphasizing the importance of connection over correction and fostering a more authentic understanding of faith. Join the conversation on navigating doubt, addressing church hurt, and ultimately portraying a better, more compelling image of Jesus in a changing religious landscape.

As your host, Doug Billings, we explore these critical questions on this episode of The Right Side. We admire and imitate our heroes, and we're often shocked when we discover their flaws. But is there value in facing their failures? In this episode of White Horse Inn, hosts Michael Horton, Justin Holcomb, Bob Hiller, and Walter Strickland break down the history of racism within the American church and consider what we can learn from the past as we move forward in love.
Discover the three crucial elements in the sociology of religion—Belief, Behavior, and Belonging—in this thought-provoking YouTube video. Join us as we delve into the challenging reality facing the American Church, exploring "The Great Dechurching" phenomenon highlighted by Michael Graham and Jim Davis. With 40 million individuals abandoning church attendance in the last 30 years, this unprecedented shift raises high-stakes questions about the value of community and the impact of societal changes. Uncover the reasons behind this mass departure, from shifting priorities to societal influences, and understand the potential consequences if the trend persists. Drawing from biblical wisdom, we explore the essence of true belonging, as outlined in Ephesians 4:1-2 and John 13:34-35. Discover the significance of actively participating in a faith community, where "one-anothering" becomes a way of life, fostering mutual care, support, and love. As we address the challenges and call for a renewed commitment to gathered worship, we confront the question: Are we, as a church, the solution or the problem in this critical moment for the American Church? Join the conversation and extend an invitation to those who may have stepped away. Let's explore together the transformative power of belonging and the impact it can have on our lives, our communities, and the generations to come.
Rebuilding a Missional Church- Part XII - This week, Peter and Leslie completed their Rebuilding a Missional Church series. Throughout this series, the Doanes have drawn upon Sacred Scripture, the Catholic Church's Catechism, the Saints' lives, and the Church's teachings to demonstrate the "time is now" for every Catholic believer to move from "maintenance to mission.! The Lord is calling each of us out of our comfort zone to begin to imitate, in our callings, the mindset that St. Paul modeled as he went forward to extend the Kingdom of God. The American Church needs volunteers to bring this pioneering approach. Will you and I answer this call? This series can become a life-changer for individuals, families, and local parishes!
“Debates about women's roles in the church are back in the headlines, but a lot of them leave out a large and important group of American Christians: the Black church.” - Khristi Lauren Adams, author, minister, dean, and advocate. When we read these first lines of a recent Christianity Today article by Khristi Adams, we knew we wanted to hear more. Why do so many of our conversations about the church or the Evangelical church sideline the wisdom and experience of the Black church? Khristi Adams graciously joins us this week to talk about church mothers, gender roles, and the wide open arms of the Black church. We barely scratch the surface, but it's a helpful start to a lengthier conversation that would benefit all Christ followers.Special Thanks to our Sponsor: Crossway - https://www.crossway.org/ Sunday Matters: 52 Devotionals to Prepare Your Heart for Church by Paul David Tripp - https://www.crossway.org/books/sunday...Khristi Lauren Adams: https://khristilaurenadams.com/ Pre-Order: Womanish Theology: Discovering God through the Lens of Black Girlhood - https://amzn.to/3QEccFY Parable of the Brown Girl: The Sacred Lives of Girls of Color - https://amzn.to/3Qzjvif Unbossed: How Black Girls Are Leading the Way - https://amzn.to/3FWxOIF Black Girls Unbossed: Young World Changers Leading the Way (for readers ages 9-12) - https://amzn.to/47p34Ma Resources mentioned in or related to this episode: The Black Church - from Henry Lewis Gates Jr. - https://www.pbs.org/show/black-church/ Speech given by Jelly Roll when he won best new artist at the CMAs - https://twitter.com/KhristiLauren/sta... Are men and women called to have the same kind of roles? Are women supposed to support men but not lead them, or lead alongside them? This is a sensitive ongoing discussion in the American Church. In this episode, author and esteemed theologian Dr. Michelle Lee-Barnewall joins Juli to discuss why this debate misses God's heart for how men and women should relate to each other in the family of God. In this episode, Jayd Henricks joins the podcast to talk about his two online articles, “Pope Francis Does not Understand the American Church” from June 2022 and “Why Does the Pope Dislike Me?” from August 2023. They evaluate the Vatican’s relationship with the Church in America today.
In recent years, the practices, traditions, and liturgy of the American Church has drastically changed. Things like stained glass windows, pews, and altars have been replaced by TV's, lights, padded seats, and stages. Ministers who used to wear vestal robes now deliver messages in skinny jeans using IPads. It's not that churches that embrace nontraditional, modern methodology have moved away from orthodoxy or the authority of the Scriptures- to make matters all the more complex, it's actually more historic mainline, traditional denominations who have done that in an embrace of progressive theology, all while holding onto the liturgy and traditions of the past. Many American Christians have reported feeling a bit, stuck. Some modern, nontraditional churches feel more like entertainment for teenagers in their presentation, yet they're sticking to the orthodox doctrines of scripture. Some historic, traditional liturgical churches present a worship experience full of reverence and beauty, rich with tradition and history, yet they've moved away from Christian orthodoxy into something else. How do we understand the place of Christian tradition, practices, and spiritual disciplines in corporate worship? Is it possible to find a church that holds corporate worship services that are full of substance, truth, depth, reverence, and intentionality?

David, Charity, and Leo return with Ruth to continue their conversation from last week. In an episode that could have been titled, “Confessions of Professional Christians,” these four vulnerably and candidly share their own struggles with perfectionism at the cost of transformation. David gives us incredible insight into the difference between a diverse community and a reconciling community. Charity shares what has mattered most to her young family as they looked for a place to worship and Leo reveals his experience as a children's pastor when the children ruined all his well intentioned plans with their beautiful human-ness. What does it look like to make space for worship that changes us? This season we're focusing on worship, particularly worship that is transformative. Our season long guest is Rory Noland and we will be working with his book, Transforming Worship: Planning and Leading Sunday Services as If Spiritual Formation Mattered. We have a full house for today's episode! Ruth and Rory are joined by David Bailey, Leo Ayala, and Charity McClure. Sunday morning continues to be the most segregated hour of the week and many of us find ourselves longing to worship alongside a community that reflects a beautiful diversity of age, race, gender, socioeconomic status and more. In this episode our brave participants discuss how little resources exist for multi ethnic worship, the ways in which worship planners can prepare services with only some members of their congregation in mind and how important it is to allow a variety of people to bring their whole selves and voices to the worship planning and execution. They also share a beautiful experience they all had together in community that gave them a glimpse of what it might look like to worship on earth as in heaven. The American Church faces a crisis of division. The people of God, however, have been here before. Thousands of years ago, the Kingdom of Israel suffered a devastating civil war. Psalm 133, a Psalm of Ascent, reminds us of God's heart for his Church and offers a way forward. If you enjoy the show, would you please consider rating and reviewing Honestly, Though? How can we avoid being tepid in our relationship with Christ? This week, we look at the scathing words of Jesus' to the church in Laodicea: how the comforts of the world and self-satisfaction can make us numb to Christ's calling, how Jesus' longs for us to be alive and earnest in our faith and how, by being persistent in our pursuit of Him, God will answer with grace. Hey BTL Fam! We are here and thankful for a new week and a new episode! Today we have a NEW GUEST. He is not new to the podcast, but he is new to the table. Help us welcome, GABE!! Gabe directs behind the scenes for the podcast and just wait until you hear him at the table! In addition to Gabe, we have Pastor Will Chung, the Lead Pastor of Beloved Church in Buena Park, CA, the people's padre, Adam Mesa and Chelsie. We haven't had a debate in a while, so we thought, we'd have another! This episode unfolds a profound conversation revolving around the complex role of language and representation in contemporary Christianity.Another contentious yet intriguing subject discussed was the use of cussing in Christian communication. Yes, we said CUSSING. The conversation evaluated reactions to Tim Ross's use of cuss words in his podcast, assessing whether this communicative approach could potentially attract people to the faith. The discussion also reflected on historical instances such as Paul's use of a cuss word in the Bible for emphasis. This thought-provoking episode encourages self-reflection, understanding, and dialogue, reminding us of the need for compassion, conviction, and clarity in our approach to evangelism and the necessity of recognizing and addressing the power of language within Christianity. So, grab your tea or coffee and join us in this weeks conversation.--Get connected with our guests:Will Chung https://www.instagram.com/willkchung/?igshid=Y2I2MzMwZWM3ZA%3D%3D--Don't forget to stay connected with us:Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4OvpFp9OB9_DgVdVVbXhFgInstagram https://www.instagram.com/beyond.theletter/Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/discover/beyond-the-letter--Get to know some of the team:@amesa https://www.instagram.com/amesa/Gabe - does not have instagram@chelsiebaham https://www.instagram.com/chelsiebaham/@nancysnavas https://www.instagram.com/nancysnavas/

The Church in American has lost its edge. There are very clear and simple reasons that explain how this happened.
Many Christians say, "I am the righteousness of God," without knowing what that phrase means Biblically, although they think they do! To be "the righteousness of God" means something significantly different than popularly conceived. Today's podcast will help get you out of the stagnation of a Christian without a vision and into the exciting, joyful, and active work of becoming the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.❤️ SHOW YOUR SUPPORT - LINKS BELOW...➡️ DONATE ➡️ Join our team!https://www.givesendgo.com/karlgesslerfamilybandhttps://www.patreon.com/karlgesslerSocial Media➡️Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089357625739➡️Telegram - https://t.me/FaithoftheFathers➡️Truth Social - https://truthsocial.com/@UCLOvq6O4aIXLrkKxwXkq3uA ➡️Gab - https://gab.com/KarlGesslerSupport the show

Transcription Marc Schelske 0:00Do you know the hidden history of the place where you live? If we want to be part of God's work to bring restoration and liberation, we can't ignore what's happened in the past, as much as we'd like to. Telling this truth is the only way to get to healing. Hey, friends, I'm Marc Alan Schelske, and this is The Apprenticeship Way, a podcast about spiritual growth following the way of Jesus. This is episode 54. Knowing the past to make a better future. THIS WEEK'S SPONSOR Before we start, I'd like to tell you about Apprenticeship Notes. Apprenticeship Notes is my new email newsletter. What is this? Why should you subscribe? Why on earth would you want one more newsletter in your inbox? I'm glad you asked. Social media has just stopped working well for many people. Our social media feeds used to be spaces where we had some control. We could choose to follow people who are interesting to us. We could connect with friends, we could learn from the experience and wisdom of other people. For well more than 10 years, my social media feeds, particularly Twitter, were a significant benefit to me, especially as a writer. But nowadays, in most cases our social media feeds are filled with ads, sponsored posts that are ads but don't look like ads, and influencers trying to sell us on their latest master course. And even when we find and follow the people we want to hear more from, the black-box algorithms determine whether or not we get to see what they have to say. And usually what the algorithm shows us is just stuff that gets us ramped up. That means more anger, more division. It's a mess. I've been slowly transitioning away from using social media as the main avenue for communicating about my writing. It's really scary. I can't even express to you how big of a change this is. At one point I had 35,000 followers on Twitter, I could reliably post a new blog and around a thousand people would see it. But that's not true any longer and it hasn't been for a while. And so I decided to begin building a different kind of space where I could write, encourage people, and serve folks who want to grow spiritually and value the writing that I do. The first step of this new plan is my newsletter. It's called Apprenticeship Notes because the spiritual life, following the way of Jesus, is something you learn by doing. This newsletter comes out monthly. OK, honestly, monthly-ish, probably about nine to 10 times a year. So what will you find if you subscribe? Well, each edition starts with Today's Note,
Where can we find the strength to stand against worldly opposition? This week, we look at Jesus' command to the church in Philadelphia, why difficulty and hostility should an expected part of the Christian faith, and how, in spite of that, we can stand with triumphant endurance by God's grace extended to us. Paul Sands, Senior Pastor
This week, the founder of UPPERROOM, Michael Freeland Miller, joins us to talk about why in life, "simple" doesn't always mean "easy." We'll also scratch the surface on the subject of walking through seasons of transition. This I know: many of you are in transition right now. Maybe it's from a job, a relationship, or just a stage of life. Suffice it to say, transition isn't easy. Michael's going to shed some helpful light on the subject. We're also going to unpack how to steward pain and transition well, as well as the unmistakable priority to host God's presence. In this podcast, Pastor Rachelle preaches a powerful message on the Church being convinced. Still staying faithful is a lost piece in the modern American Church. Still staying faithful is past the level of loyal or faithful. It's faithful with a resolve. It's faithful that has produced some fruit. Support the show

Letter to the American Church By Eric Metaxas. This audio excerpt serves as an introduction to this fine book. Highly recommended by ACU. Purchase this book from your favorite bookseller or on Audible. Publisher's summary In an earnest and searing wake-up call, the author of the bestseller Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy warns of the haunting similarities between today's American church and the German church of the 1930s. Echoing Bonhoeffer's prophetic call, Eric Metaxas exhorts his fellow Christians to repent of their silence in the face of evil before it is too late. “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. God will not hold us guiltless.” Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity. As Bonhoeffer and other heroes of the faith insisted, the Church has an irreplaceable role in the culture of a nation. It is our duty to fight the powers of darkness, especially on behalf of the weak and vulnerable. Silence is not an option. God calls us to defend the unborn, to confront the lies of cultural Marxism, and to battle the globalist tyranny that crushes human freedom. Confident that this is His fight, the Church must overcome fear and enter the fray, armed with the spiritual weapons of prayer, self-sacrifice, and love. Welcome to episode ninety-seven of New Creation Conversations. This week's conversation is with Dr. Andrew Whitehead. Andrew is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Association of Religion Data Archives at the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at IUPUI (Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis). He is a graduate of Purdue University and got his PhD in sociology from Baylor University. He is one of the foremost scholars of Christian nationalism in the United States. He's written 50+ peer reviewed articles and has been featured across several national outlets including The New York Times, NPR, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, CNN, The Today Show, The Economist, Rolling Stone, and The Guardian. His first book, Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States (published by Oxford and co-written with Sam Perry), won the 2021 Distinguished Book Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. We spend our time discussing his most recent book, American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church (Brazos). In the book, Andrew not only describes the history and problems related to Christian nationalism, but he also takes on its three great idolatries: power, fear, and violence. There has been a lot of healthy conversation in the US church on this issue over the last few years, and Andrew's book brings a lot of the issues into a clearer light. The book is timely, especially as we get ready to head into another potentially divisive presidential election season. One of the things I like most about the book is that Andrew doesn't just analyze the problem but gives examples of churches and communities of faith that are working for the good of our world without being absorbed into its idolatries. It's an important book and a rich conversation.
What does it mean to "repent" and why do we need to do it? This week, we look at Jesus' words to the church in Thyatira and how it should spur us to repentance, what that term means (and, crucially, what it does not), and how repentance is a gift which affords us strength and self-respect through the grace of God. Paul Sands, Senior Pastor
What do we do when we find ourselves stagnant in our faith? This week, we look at Jesus' message to the church in Sardis, the ways in which believers can "fall asleep" in their faith, and the remedy given by Christ: to remember the truth we have been given and to respond by turning to Him. Michael Carlson, Congregational Care Pastor
How should the church respond to the world's tolerance of sin? This week, we heed Jesus' warning to the church in Pergamum as we explore the danger in negotiating with a worldly desire to ignore sin, the blessing found in God's commands, and the hope given by the gospel, which both affirms the reality of sin but assures us of life through Jesus Christ. Paul Sands, Senior Pastor
Leslie Ludy is the special guest for this thirty-seventh installment in Eric Ludy's epic summer series covering the contentious and war-torn season of American history from 1914 to 1974. In this episode, Leslie dives into the lives of Keith Green and Leonard Ravenhill, showing the impact of their lives and ministries in the 70's, as well as key spiritual truths for today's American Church.------------For more information about Daily Thunder and the ministry of Ellerslie Mission Society, please visit: https://ellerslie.com/. How are Christians to respond to persecution? This week, we look at Jesus' encouragement to the church in Smyrna and how, in the face of persecution, we are called to keep our vow to God, to remind ourselves of his blessing and care for us, and to stand unashamed and without fear through our faith in Jesus Christ. Paul Sands, Senior Pastor
Are we truly creating a culture of evangelism within our little corners of the world? There's no doubt about the fact that most Christians are not sharing their faith with others, and if they are, they aren't inviting these new converts to be a part of anything more radical than filling a seat beside them at church on Sunday. Is this what the Lord intends for us when it comes to evangelism, or is there something so much better waiting on the other side of the shallow end we're currently afloat in? Veteran religion journalist, Bob Smietana joins Amy Fritz to talk about his new book Reorganized Religion: The Reshaping of the American Church and Why It Matters. The episode was originally aired in the fall of 2022. Bob shares why burning it all down is not the best approach to organized religion, why the "organized" part of "organized religion" is important, and what the future of the American church looks like. Bob also shares some thoughts on the pastoral plagiarism conversation and what it was like to be able to publish an exclusive interview with Beth Moore. Does the New Age movement offer a "higher level" of Christianity? Often used interchangeably, New Age and New Thought have appealed to the masses, both in secular society as well as within Christian churches. If New Age practices have somehow managed to creep into your church, can you identify them? Who better to ask about the New Age than someone who actually practiced it? This week, Frank sits down with ex New-Ager, CrossExamined Apologist Team (CAT) member and YouTube phenom, Melissa Dougherty, to talk about some of the key aspects of New Age philosophy, how it rose to popularity in America, and how it's impacting the American Church. As Melissa shares her testimony, she'll also answer questions like: What is the distinction between New Age and New Thought? What is the overlap between the New Age and Progressive Christianity? Can the New Age or New Thought be redeemed for the Gospel? How did a Jehovah's Witness bring Melissa closer to the truth of Jesus Christ? What is God's role and purpose within the New Age movement? The idea that you can manipulate the circumstances of your life by finding the 'true' meaning of the Scriptures has drawn many to embrace New Age teachings. Believing yourself to have more spiritual power than other Christians may be appealing, but it comes with its own set of consequences. During this episode, you'll find out these teachings compromise the truth of the Gospel and ultimately downplay the sovereignty, holiness, and providence of God.
