Perspective is everything. The more we live, the more we learn. The ultimate goal for many is to grow, share and lead. Dr. Greg Ellison does just that. An Atlanta native, Ellison is associate professor of pastoral care and counseling at Emory University's Candler School of Theology where he earned his undergraduate degree and later a Ph.D. degrees in pastoral theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. Intellectually invigorating and engaging, Dr. Ellison is approaching what may be most challenging and exciting time in his life: parenting a college bound student. As an educator, Dr. Ellison has perspective about his role as a dad. I mean, he is the author of Fearless Dialogues: A New Movement for Justice and Cut Dead But Still Alive: Caring for African American Young Men two books that will help him to navigate this complicated terrain.  So we sat down with Dr. Ellison and asked him some probing questions. Hear his responses and grow, share and lead with us.

It's tempting to avoid direct conversations about racism because it immediately raises people's alarm systems. We all bring our personal baggage into the conversation and we don't want to cause offense to anyone through disagreements. How can youth pastor theologians model faithful ways to have sensitive conversations?  How can youth workers in mostly white youth groups care for the non-white students in our ministries - especially when we witness racism or cultural insensitivity?  How does the gospel reshape the way we think and talk about racism?  What are some of the biggest misconceptions people have about race conversations, and how can we avoid serious misunderstandings.  Sometimes we simply misunderstand each other. But sometimes we really do fundamentally disagree with our brothers and sisters in Christ. How can we disagree with each other well and navigate that with trust and respect from both sides of those disagreements.  Michelle Ami Reyes is the creator of Seasoned with Grace and writes at the intersection of multiculturalism, faith, and justice. She is the author of Becoming All Things, and co-author of The Race-Wise Family. Michelle lives in Austin, Texas with her pastor husband, and two amazing kids. One of the more difficult aspects of moving from isolation to connection can be the necessity of having some hard conversations. In this episode, we hear Hannah McMullen's story of growing up black in a predominantly white setting. She explains how it became difficult for her to have conversations about race, and how this kept her separated from others knowing her more fully. She shares stories of hurt and healing, and how a difficult conversation led to breakthrough. Yes, sometimes fatigue sets in for us practitioners. We started Bourbon, Beer, and Bold Conversations over 18 months ago to have difficult conversations about race and many other topics related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Like others, we get tired of everything being about race, or Black and white. And, most things are about race, discrimination, and racism. We share our perspectives and feelings so you too know we have to give ourselves some grace sometimes, acknowledge it, work through it, and get back at it!

Young children are like sponges, absorbing information about the world around them. Children have already started to internalize racialized messages about their value and self-worth by the time they are three to four years old. Psychologist Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, an expert in racial identity development and the author of “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? and Other Conversations About Race” calls this “the smog we're all breathing.”   In our Season 2 premiere of Early Risers, host Dianne Haulcy talks with Tatum about concrete steps parents and caregivers can take to proactively affirm children, including how to respond when children ask us questions about race and physical differences. Episode Resources: Tatum's best-selling book, “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? and Other Conversations About Race” was first published in 1997. She released an updated 20th anniversary version in 2017. Tatum's 2017 TedX Stanford talk, “Is My Skin Brown Because I Drank Chocolate Milk?” features stories and practical advice about talking to very young children about race, including addressing the painful history of chattel slavery.  Faith Ringgold's “Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky” is one of Dr. Tatum's favorite books to use with young children to open conversation about the horrors of chattel slavery and the courage of people who resisted. She also suggests Jeanette Winter's “Follow the Drinking Gourd.” Tatum recommends Social Justice Books for discovering multicultural and social justice books for children. Today we're discussing race. Depending on your skin color, it may be a different conversation with your children, but should it be? What does God say about race? How should Christians, regardless of their skin color, respond to recent racial tensions? Today, I'm starting a conversation to seek deeper understanding with returning guest Carol Butler, a wife, mother of 5, and author. Carol has been married to Marcus since 2007, and together they have 5 children that she homeschools. She is also the author of Finding Hope in Chaos: A Journaling Devotional, a book that she published in the midst of great disappointment.Join the Supernatural Moms Facebook Group.Follow Jaimee on Facebook and Instagram.

Conversations about race, equity, and inclusion are not new to K-12 classrooms. From studying MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech to the analysis of works by poet Maya Angelou, these discussions have been necessary components in lessons on history, literature, and art for decades.rnrnYet, in response to sudden outrage over Critical Race Theory, the Ohio state legislature has introduced two bills that ban "divisive concepts" - a broad definition that leaves much to interpretation and has put many routine classroom conversations in jeopardy.rnrnWhat will be at stake if these conversations are prohibited in schools? Why are honest conversations about race, equity, and inclusion important in K-12 education?rnrnJoin the City Club for a virtual conversation with local voices at the heart of the matter: John Adams, Department Chair for History, Cleveland School of Science and Medicine at John Hay High School; Melissa Cropper, President of the Ohio Federation of Teachers; Owen Ganor, Student at Rocky River High School; and Sarah Rintamaki, a parent of two children in the Westlake City Schools.

Is Talking About Race a Distraction in the Church?

Ask A Pastor

If you've been around the last few years, you know that our society has been having a national conversation about race and racism in America – again. But talking about race has done more to expose division than cause it – mostly because when it comes to the topic of race, most people where they stand or what they believe about the issue until the conversation is happening, and what we believe often rises to the surface during intense moments. Some people can't understand why racism keeps coming up, while others can't see how others can ignore something so obvious in our society. The church here in America hasn't been excluded from this conversation. Talking about race- just like anything else- could cause a distraction or cause division in the church – but I don't believe that it is either of those things. Here are three reasons why I think it's important for churches to talk about race and racism:1. Christians aren't immune from causing or experiencing racism.2. The church, both globally and in the US, has a history of being complicit in racism3. If the church doesn't talk about these topics, it may be ignoring a division subtly shaping and affecting its people, ultimately hindering peace.Rayshawn Graves is a pastor and writer from Richmond, Virginia.

002 - Host Thomas Pierce is joined by longtime friend Tom King as they discuss their personal privilege and how systemic racism in the United States plays out in everyday life. The discussion is framed by the work of two anti-racism scholars, Dr. Peggy McIntosh and Dr. Robin DiAngelo. With plenty of comedic relief as the two laugh at the absurdity of white fragility, the two model what an honest conversation about race can look like. The second half of the episode broadens out into mental health and how men interact with each other as the pair identify some of the components that constitute toxic masculinity. The two model what a healthy relationship between two straight men can look like after years of friendship and honest conversations.Items Referenced: "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" and "Some Notes for Facilitators". © 1989 Dr. Peggy McIntosh  " White Fragility and the Rules of Engagement" -  Dr. Robin DiAngelo"Men and depression" - American Psychological Association 13th Amendment to the US ConstitutionFollow on Instagram here. All episodes here.
