In this episode, we delve into the adverse effects of AI-generated images on media and their growing impact. We'll discuss the recent controversy over Levi's partnership with LalaLand.ai and debate if AI-inclusive modeling serves as a positive force. Furthermore, we'll examine the white savior narrative issues in the film AIR, directed by Ben Affleck and starring Matt Damon, and consider the significant influence of movies and TV on culture. Segment 1: The AI and Race Dilemma Jack and Mike investigate the concerns surrounding AI-generated images and their influence on race, society, and trust in journalism, media, and advertising. They highlight examples like the Pope donning a Balenciaga puffer and the fabricated Donald Trump arrest photos. The conversation also covers the backlash against Levi's partnership with LalaLand.ai, a company specializing in AI-generated diverse and inclusive models, and questions the potential advantages or disadvantages of AI-inclusive modeling on society. Segment 2: The White Savior Complex of AIR The hosts tackle the contentious movie AIR, directed by Ben Affleck and featuring Matt Damon, arguing that such films represent "white Hollywood propaganda" that perpetuates damaging white savior narratives, particularly in a post-George Floyd era. They advocate for increased creativity and sensitivity when addressing stories and characters of color. The Brown & Black podcast, a 2023 Webby Nominee in the Best DE&I Episode Category, examines race and pop culture. Hosted by two distinct film and culture critics – one Latino and one Black – it aims to redefine how pop culture news and opinions are presented in America. Jack Rico and Mike Sargent interview Latino and Black filmmakers, actors, musicians, and artists to dissect the intricate relationship between entertainment and race.

A common criticism of modern missions in the US is that it feeds what is commonly called a "white savior complex." This critique gives many people in the western church pause about mission trips and serving under-resourced parts of the world. How should Christians and church leaders address this critique? How do we reconcile Jesus' clear call to "go into all the world" with this issue? In this episode, we will discuss what Jesus teaches and why it matters "how" we go. This is an important conversation for anyone wanting to serve or lead in missions in a way that is healthy and informed. It is also a great podcast to share with your mission team to start a conversation about healthy global missions. Join the conversation by sending us a message, comment or question at podcast@orchardafrica.org. Last month we had a slight technical issue that did not allow us to receive emails. That has been fixed and so if you sent a message last month, please resend it to us. We would love to hear from you.
Hi there and welcome to Cultivating Conversations, an unscripted podcast presented by Fluxus. Previously known as No Notes, Just Vibes, the girls decided this rebranding was aligned with the integrity of the podcast. We appreciate you coming along for the ride and allowing us the space to grow and evolve! *We apologize for the audio, as we try to troubleshoot the best way to record our podcast episodes while the gals are in two different countries. In this episode, sit down with Nikole and Ren to chat about mission trips and the "white savior" complex. We hope you enjoy this episode and get something out of it. We appreciate you so much for listening and for your support. We want to encourage you to continue the conversation with yourself or with other close individuals in your life! Here are the questions that were discussed in today's episode: 1. What constitutes a mission trip & what is a "white savior" complex? "The term white savior is a sarcastic or critical description of a white person liberating, rescuing, or uplifting non-white people; it is critical in the sense that it describes a pattern in which third world peoples are denied agency and are seen as passive recipients of white benevolence" - Wikipedia 2. Are mission trips good/ethical/helpful? 3. What is your experience/perception of mission trips, is it inherently connected to the "white savior" complex? 4. What are better alternatives to mission trips to third world countries? LINKS!
We will look at the framework of the white savior complex. I analyze the presence of the white savior complex and how it exists within the interactions of minority youth.
Christians are called to imitate Jesus. But we also have to realize that we are not saviors. So how do we imitate a savior without being a savior? In this episode, we'll look specifically at the "White Savior." What is a white savior and how do we imitate Christ without becoming one?
Have you ever heard of the White Savior Complex? From films such as the Blind Side and the Help, to real life experiences such as missionary work. While the work done by people may be well-intended and kind-hearted, the execution of the help offered is being debated. While the Disclaimer: This is not an attack on any group (religious, race, etc.). This is an observation and discussion of a complex.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/racethinkdinner/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/racethinkdinner/support

"With the recent widespread of protests for black civil rights and against racism across the Western world, the topic of white prejudice has risen to the center of public attention, of which one manifestation is the so-called ‘White Saviour Syndrome'. Whether it is Ed Sheeran posing for ‘Comic Relief' with a number of black children (Hinsliff, 2019), Madonna adopting children from Malawi (Hinsliff, 2019), or students going on adventures advertised for ‘young philanthropists' within a multi-million dollar gap-year industry (Bandyopadhyay, 2019), numerous cases of altruistic acts of ‘White Saviours' can be found throughout popular culture in the global North. Whereas these practices follow an altruistic narrative, they are commonly criticized as serving to satisfy a ‘White Saviour Syndrome', the phenomenon in which a white person “guides people of color from the margins to the mainstream with his or her own initiative and benevolence” which tends to render the people of color “incapable of helping themselves” and disposes them of historical agency (Cammarota, 2011: 243-244). Welcome back to Tell Me More!, a podcast for amplifying the work of graduate students. In this episode, we hear from Aunrika Tucker-Shabazz, a fourth-year PhD candidate at University of Michigan Ann Arbor in the Department of Sociology focusing on gender, sexuality and family. The murder trial of Dereck Chauvin came to an end last week. In past episodes we've discussed extensively the ideas and tensions underlying police brutality, so in this episode we simply consider, very briefly, what's next after the guilty verdict. Then we move into some deep reflection on the role of anti-Asian bigotry in our collective conscious, and how that informs the bright but brief publicity of #StopAsianHate. Finally, we take a quick look at how our white savior complex can disguise itself as passion and purpose, sneakily poisoning and undermining the ways we show up as anti-racists.

They discuss how we grow up affects how we view the world as adults and how we can unlearn what we were taught by our family and peers. They continue the conversation by bringing up how we can educate ourselves to be better allies and to uplift those who are marginalized and oppressed. It's pervasive... It's insidious... And it might be (if we're being honest here)... a compelling, even tempting self-narrative for many of us white folx . White Savior Complex (WSC) is alive and well, and it's a storyline that on the surface might appear to be helpful, but is actually deeply harmful to those it reaches. In this episode, I speak with teacher-turned-PhD student, Ms. Duane, about WSC and the ways it manifests and impacts the students and families we serve. She walks us through the 5 actionable ways that white educators can begin combating WSC in ourselves and why this is so very important. Biggest Takeaways You Don’t Want to Miss: People of color don't want (or need) to be "saved." We - as their teacher or provider - cannot possibly be a better support than those individuals already within their community. “We should not want to save kids. If you are in this profession to save a child, you are in the wrong profession. We are here to support and love and advocate and facilitate and enrich… but we are not their saviors.” - Ms. Duane Episode Show Notes: www.traumacamp.com/24 Want to Join Our Community? Sean and Cody exchange Thanksgiving leftovers for Rwandan mountain gorillas and join forces with History by Hollywood podcast host Martin Darlington for an in-depth look at Gorillas in the Mist, the popular biopic of legendary primatologist Dian Fossey. In this 1988 film based on her memoirs, amateur naturalist Fossey (Sigourney Weaver) begs bigwig anthropologist Louis Leakey for a slot on a junket to Africa to count endangered gorillas. When she gets in-country she begins an obsessive one-woman war against poachers, zoo headhunters, amorous graduate students, wayward National Geographic photographers and anyone who stands in the way of “her” gorillas. Environmental issues discussed include species conservation, poaching in Africa, bushmeat and its relationship to economies and disease, the world wildlife conservation business and a repeat grudge match with our old friend the White Savior Complex. Was the real Dian Fossey a saint and a savior, or an out-of-control monster who did more harm than good? Who might have been responsible for her still-unsolved 1985 murder? Should Westerners from developed countries go to Africa to save wildlife, or is that another form of colonialism? Are poachers always bad? What was the Congo Crisis and what does it have to do with this movie? Why would you want to put a chimpanzee into a gorilla suit? Are there actually any real gorillas in this picture, or are they all people (or chimps) in suits? How did Teddy Roosevelt set out to save the environment by shooting up the landscape with a shotgun? Is Sigourney Weaver's agent secretly subsidizing the production of Green Screen? After the racist Götterdämmerung of King Kong, why are we talking about gorillas again? All these questions are beating their chests and screeching to be debated on this Very Special Episode of Green Screen. Big thanks to Martin Darlington of History by Hollywood, with whom this episode is a joint production. In unserer 11. Does the color of your skin matter when doing good? What exactly is a White Savior, and how can you tell if the television you are producing is not racially sensitive? Craig and Earl spend some time with experts, filmmakers and people who do good, in communities which don't look like them.
If you have ever wondered what it's like to be a foster parent, look no further! My friend, Amanda Carpenter, is talking about the good, the bad, the stigmas, the struggles and everything in between. She touches on the importance of sharing real life on social media and why "impressing is exhausting". Lindsey and Amanda discuss the 'white savior complex' and how it made its way into - and out of - Amanda's home and heart.
Many Whites unknowingly feel a strong need to save the world ... because somewhere in the deepest part of their being, are thoughts that something is wrong with “others” (people who are not like them). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome back to "Cave of Thrones!!!" There's a lot to unpack in this episode, and soon your watch will be over. But know this, no matter what language she's speaking in, it sure sounds scary. In this episode, CraigMakk reminds you that you must always Remember the Beetles; Serious Jest breaks out his newly-signed ManCave Chorus group; and the guys discuss the beginning of the series finale, including topics such as: why friends don't mix politics and brutal warfare; break down why the show really liked to lean in to its "White Savior Complex" a bit too much; dissect the eerie similarity in speech patterns between Targaryen leaders and a certain Nazi you may have heard of; roll out their brand new podcast, "The CraigMakk & Fiery Justice Show;" and much, much more. All while drinking some absolutely incredible beers that will make you want to (or need to) bend the knee. So strap in, grab yourself a beer, and welcome back to "Cave of Thrones!!!" Beer(s) of the Show: Dogfish Head Midas Touch Ancient Ale, Ommegang King in the North barrel-aged Imperial Stout, and Three Floyd's Space Station Middle Finger Pale Ale.
Angie Hambrick, PLU's Assistance Vice President of Diversity, Justice and Sustainability, sits down with anthropology professor and PLU Peace Corps Prep Program Coordinator Katherine Wiley, Hispanic studies professor Giovanna Urdangarain, and anthropology and global studies professor Dr. Ami Shah to discuss service abroad — but more importantly, how that service impacts indigenous communities, the need to exercise care when serving domestically and internationally, and the White Savior Complex.

In this episode Nii, Nana & Kwame Mante (Narrow Path Films CEO) discuss what has MP David Lammy been eating? And is he seeing a little Adjoa on the side? Where has this new found VIM come from, that made him call out Comic Relief and their White Savior Complex ala Stacey Dooley? But ultimately we chew the fat how charity keeps people in the west in their bubble, and doesn't allow anyone to get to the root cause of poverty in Africa. We also shout out FUSE ODG and his work to re-brand Africa and the millions of us who support Africa through remittance!

A viral video of an American missionary abusing local hotel staff in Uganda exposed the ongoing racism and colonialism that continues to infuse global aid and development. Through voices with deep experience in the sector, we hear how the white savior complex continues to harm those receiving and giving aid around the world, and think about ways to help it become a more equal space.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this extra-long episode of Mental Illness in Pop Culture, we examine The Soloist, featuring Jamie Foxx as the titled character, Nathaniel Ayers, Jr., a homeless musical prodigy with severe mental illness, and Robert Downey, Jr. as Steve Lopez, the L.A. Times writer whose columns about Ayers formed the film’s basis. We find the film to be an authentic portrayal of mental illness, struggle with whether or not the movie is yet another cinematic example of the White Savior Complex, conclude the portrayal of relationship (or lack of) as the core of mental health consistent William Glasser’s Choice Theory, and discuss how power/privilege plays out in mental health treatment and being homeless. In a #momentofauthenticity, podcaster Leanne discloses her personal story as a homeless adolescent being cared for by a parent with severe mental illness at 1:20:43. In this podcast series, we focus on pop culture portrayals of mental health issues and professional helping, believing that public perception is both reflected and influenced by popular media.
