I have been trying to figure out why certain albums have an it factor, a living aura, breathability. You can usually feel it from the first track onward. Well, at least I do. I know that music is not the same for everybody and some of the albums I might bring up from time to time I gush about does not make the next guy even blink. I do think I have good taste though and it’s my podcast so fuck it I don’t come in here to please everybody. Today I want to talk about atmosphere and I'm not speaking about something that sounds atmospheric because that’s different in my opinion. I mean that music much like film can create a world. A mis-en-scene but for music. The use of similar sounds and instruments throughout a project can create a feeling of auditory cohesiveness that can take a project from a collection of songs to a curated, thoughtful piece. Using the same sounds as a motif isn’t the only key to achieving atmosphere though. It’s one element in the pie and without others the project can fall a bit flat. There are too many to list out individually and I’m not attempting to be a music theorist. I just like talking about music so I have an album I wanted to discuss that creates an atmosphere. I just wanted to share what I've been recently challenged with in my life. It's short and to the point, but it would feel weird if I held onto this recording and tried to upload it at a later time. Sometimes it's okay to share the not so good things openly. A more 'on brand' episode coming this Friday still.
