In this episode, we welcome shapeshifting DJ, producer and activist Lauren Flax. Lauren began her career in the underground Detroit music scene where she evolved her style into techno, house, and electro music. More recently she is producing and recording her own music and we are pleased to showcase some of her music throughout this episode. She began her DJ career in the underground dance and rave scenes of Detroit as a resident at the Motor Lounge. Flax played the very first Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000 on the Motor stage. While originally starting off as a jungle DJ, Flax evolved her style into techno, house, and electro music. Flax moved to Chicago in 1999, where she honed in on music production while continuing to DJ. By 2002, she relocated to New York City which shortly followed the release of her first remix, "Much Finer" for Le Tigre. In 2019, Flax joined the mostly Detroit-born New York collective The Bunker New York, on which she released "One Man's House is Another Woman's Techno EP" (2019). The EP was highly successful and sold out quickly.More recently she linked up with UK rave veterans Jerome Hill and Posthuman, putting out suitably club-ready fare on their respective Super Rhythm Trax and Balkan Vinyl labels. She has also found the time to release Out Of Reality, Flax's new EPa record that sits at the opposite end of the electronic spectrum.Right now, her activism is dedicated to making the Rave scene safer in the most fundamental of ways by hosting invaluable harm reduction classes and overdose response training. In this Episode 94 of Out Da Box Talks, Host Cril talks in depth with Detroit Emcee, Producer "Illingsworth" about his inspiration for pursuing music, his thoughtful but humorously clever lyrical approach, his drive for making beats and more. We talk about some of his music selections from his vast beat tape catalog but delve even deeper into his lyrical catalog which features some extremely clever and thoughtful rhymes. We talk about his latest single "Around" which finds him singing over some dreamy electro soul production, his recent Emcee Project "I Didn't Think This Through (2017 Demos)" released in May of 2020, his "OLD MAN RAPS" EP released in 2019, his "You're No Fun" single released in 2018 along with the Album, his 2016 Album "I Didn't Ask For This", his "Giant Slide" EP in 2014 and even his hilarious "Dreams In San Franscico" scat jazz track released years ago on bandcamp. I had a lot of fun doing this interview. Illingsworth is one of the most skilled and unique Emcees I have heard in recent years. I feel like he doesn't get as much recognition as he deserves. His humorous but clever and thoughtful wordplay as a lyricist is something I feel is extremely special to hip hop. His production embodies the soulful sound that Detroit Music is known for. It was indeed a pleasure chatting with this good brother. I certainly hope you enjoy. Also there is a bonus exclusive interview I have with Illingsworth which is available on our Out Da Box Media Patreon Page, I assure yout it's a really fun and dope listen. I have been trying to figure out why certain albums have an it factor, a living aura, breathability. You can usually feel it from the first track onward. Well, at least I do. I know that music is not the same for everybody and some of the albums I might bring up from time to time I gush about does not make the next guy even blink. I do think I have good taste though and it’s my podcast so fuck it I don’t come in here to please everybody. Today I want to talk about atmosphere and I'm not speaking about something that sounds atmospheric because that’s different in my opinion. I mean that music much like film can create a world. A mis-en-scene but for music. The use of similar sounds and instruments throughout a project can create a feeling of auditory cohesiveness that can take a project from a collection of songs to a curated, thoughtful piece. Using the same sounds as a motif isn’t the only key to achieving atmosphere though. It’s one element in the pie and without others the project can fall a bit flat. There are too many to list out individually and I’m not attempting to be a music theorist. I just like talking about music so I have an album I wanted to discuss that creates an atmosphere. Lady Bain is an R&B sensation coming out of Detroit. In an era when so many artists try to stake a claim to be ‘real’, Lady Bain has walked a path that makes her more ‘real’ than most. Just four years ago Cassandra Bain was a hard working Detroit police officer who found herself in a near fatal car accident. It ended her career and tragedy struck again when she lost the love of her life to dementia. Real life can be painful, but can also guide us to new places. A chance visit from a high school friend reminded Cassandra of a special talent, tucked away. During her rehabilitation she began to sing again, and Bain is no ordinary singer. Drawing passion and soul from her Baptist Church singing roots, Lady Bain’s voice is also cut through with the pain and rawness of a real life, lived. Influenced by Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Nancy Wilson, to name just a few, Lady Bain’s vocal is both classic and fresh. Her unique phrasing marks her out as an R&B talent with something worth paying special attention to. Lady Bain’s island heritage adds edge and spice to a sophisticated performance; the truth of her life experience forges an original sound that echoes the legendary singers that shaped her style. Bain even started out in the 80s singing alongside the legendary Martha Reeves. There is integrity here; style and real substance. Available across all social media platforms and about to make a splash on the scene, such is her gift, Lady Bain simply demands to be heard. https://www.ladybainmusic.com/ https://youtu.be/k0w1RsnHyqE--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nikimarieradio/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nikimarieradio/support

The book “Women Rapping Revolution: Hip Hop Community Building in Detroit” is described as an attempt to illuminate the important role that women have played in mobilizing a grassroots response to political and social pressures at the heart of the city’s ongoing renewal and development. Detroit, MIchigan, has long been recognized as a center of musical innovation and social change. Authors Rebekah Farrugia, Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations and Kellie Hay Professor of Cultural Studies in the Department of Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations, both at Oakland University located in Rochester, Michigan, spent seven years in the community with The Foundation, a Detroit-based women-centered hip hop collective. Their fieldwork in writing this book shows us how crucial it is for us to engage with outside cultures with a strong level of cultural competency and authenticity. The Detroit hip-hop women trailblazers they speak and build relationships with give us glimpses of Black womanhood and ways Black women are dismantling the hip-hop gender status quo. Kellie and Rebekah also share how this journey has challenged and evolved their own perceptions of feminism, especially in the realm of academia. Overall, such a really fascinating, multi-layered conversation. They say they were not trying to take anything away from or appropriate the culture but, only with the permission and direction of the collective, to document something so it doesn’t go away and morph into something else.

Karma was at work when Musician Jill Jack called me to say she wanted me to meet a singer/musician named Kevf. His voice was amazing she told me, and by the way, he has cystic fibrosis. I shouldn't be surprised anymore that everything CF comes my way. But I was! We have a big Gala event coming up September 28th, 2019 and I wanted Kevf to sing at our fundraiser. He agreed. "two rather leprous mendicants" [ILLU] When Watson glances across his notes and teases us with adventures that he and Sherlock Holmes have experienced, but only gives us a topic with only the barest of details, it makes us wonder exactly what happened. So is the case in this episode as we talk about the Amateur Mendicant Society and its rather unique meeting location — which in this case coincides with a real-life Sherlock Holmes society.
