What if the fastest way to grow your pool service isn't a new ad, but a missed call you never return? We walk through the simple, repeatable habits top plumbers, HVAC techs, and landscapers use to win business—and show exactly how to apply them to pool care. The playbook is straightforward: answer quickly, look professional, write clear bids, and respect the clock. Do these well and you'll close more estimates, earn better clients, and build a referral engine that compounds. We start with responsiveness because it's the real gatekeeper. When a homeowner is shopping, they call until a human picks up. A quick reply—by phone or text—keeps the lead alive and signals reliability from day one. We share low-friction systems to capture calls during business hours, including using a spouse, assistant, or simple auto-texts to acknowledge inquiries. Then we dig into presentation: clean, branded trucks, tidy uniforms, and name tags that build instant trust at the curb. Image isn't vanity; it's proof of care. From there, we get practical about paperwork and punctuality. Typed, detailed bids and easy-to-read invoices set you apart from scribbled carbon copies, reduce haggling, and speed approvals. A one-page service agreement clarifies what's included, what costs extra, and how you work—making you look modern and organized. Finally, we get real about time: arriving when you say you will, or texting early if you're delayed, tells clients their day matters. That respect shows up in reviews, renewals, and referrals. If you're ready to turn small habits into a big advantage, this conversation gives you the framework and the tools to start today. Subscribe, share this with a fellow pool pro, and leave a review to tell us which habit you'll upgrade first. We share habits from top trades that any pool pro can use to win more leads: answer fast, look sharp, write clear bids, and show up on time. Simple practices compound into trust, higher close rates, and stronger referrals.• learning from plumbers, HVAC, and landscapers• answering calls and textsSend us a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! Leslie welcomes back Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, for a preview of the newly released 2025 'Made in America Holiday Gift Guide.' (link: https://www.americanmanufacturing.org/blog/the-2025-made-in-america-holiday-gift-guide/) This year's guide makes it easier than ever for shoppers to find U.S.-made products and support American workers this holiday season. New polling released with the Gift Guide shows overwhelming demand for locally made goods, with 81% of Americans saying they're as likely or more likely to buy American-made products this year. The vast majority (83%) of shoppers say they would buy more Made in USA goods if these products were more widely available. The Gift Guide bridges that gap, connecting consumers with the craftsmanship, quality and well-paid jobs that come from buying Made in America. In its 12th year, the 2025 Guide features 148 manufacturers and makers from across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. There's an American-made gift for everyone, with finds ranging from model airplane kits and stocking stuffers to jewelry and grills. Shoppers can browse the guide by state or product category, and a new segment this year highlights brick-and-mortar stores specializing in state-made goods for in-person shopping. Additionally, AAM's Made in America Directory spotlights 873 companies and their products that are not featured in this year's Guide. Leslie and Scott highlight five of the companies and their gift offerings for just a taste of the guide. Here they are: 1 - WicR Have you always wanted to be a plant parent but were too scared you'd forget to water them every day? Fear no more: WicR is a self-watering product that makes it a lot easier. All you have to do is place the WicR at the bottom of your pot, cover it with soil, and place your plant in. Then, after an initial watering, the WicR will self-water your plant for seven to ten days. A game-changer for plant care! 2 - Alaska Glacial Essentials Skincare Alaska Glacial Essentials Skincare draws from its surrounding beauty in Cordova, Alaska, to enhance the quality of the products they make there. This company sources glacial minerals and botanicals for gentle but effective formulas, and all its products are vegan and cruelty-free. Its energy-efficient facility operates on 60-80% community hydropower, and the Certified B Corps company prides itself on a commitment to sustainability. Alaska Glacial Essentials Skincare donates 2% of its revenues to organizations that protect the Alaskan environment, such as the Copper River Watershed Project. 3 - Made-Plus Footwear The vast majority of footwear today is imported. But Alan Guyan, an alum of Under Armour's shoe division, saw an opportunity to do things differently. That's why he started Made+, a luxury athletic shoe brand based in Annapolis. All the shoes are made with 100% recycled yarn — and that yarn is made from repurposed plastic water bottles. These shoes come in all sorts of designs; they even sell shoes specially designed for pickleball. If you're looking to replace those athletic shoes, Made+ is an incredible choice. (And check out their in-person storefront if you're near Annapolis!) Lastly, be sure to check out AAM's blog post featuring Made+ from last month, where you can find on their website at AmericanManufacturing.org/blog 4 - High Strung Studios For the music lover on your list, High Strung Studios hits all the right notes. This woman-owned business transforms real guitar strings into beautiful, handcrafted jewelry made right here in the USA. Each bracelet, necklace, and pair of earrings carries a touch of rhythm and a whole lot of heart, making them perfect for anyone who finds joy in a good song. Thoughtful, unique, and full of holiday cheer, these gifts truly strike a chord. 5 - Cycle Dog Bring some wag-worthy joy to the holidays with Cycle Dog, a woman-owned company in Portland, making eco-friendly gear for dogs who love to play. Every collar, leash, toy and bed is crafted in the USA using recycled materials, keeping millions of inner tubes and bottles out of landfills. Durable, sustainable and made by a team of passionate makers (and their pups), these gifts are perfect for anyone who wants to spoil their dog, spread a little holiday cheer, and do good for the planet all at once. Lastly, Leslie and Scott talk about Project MFG. What's Project MFG? Think Top Chef — but for welders, machinists and engineers. Ray Dick, founder of Project MFG and creator of the YouTube reality show 'Clash of Trades,' is inspiring the next generation of manufacturers through hands-on competition and community engagement. AAM's website is AmericanManufacturing.org and their YouTube channel is youtube.com/@AmericanMfg (where you can watch episode's of AAM's podcast, "The Manufacturing Report") If you want to listen to episodes of "The Manufacturing Report," visit AmericanManufacturing.org/Podcast. What if your greatest strength is actually your prison? What if the capability everyone admires, the drive that built your success, the resilience that got you through everything, is the very thing keeping you exhausted, overwhelmed, and unable to let anything be easy? Manja Horner learned early that she couldn't be a bother. With an older sister battling cancer and parents stretched beyond capacity, four-year-old Manja absorbed a profound lesson: be strong, be capable, never add to the burden. That pattern of over-functioning became her operating system, driving her to perfectionism, straight A's, a full-ride scholarship, and eventually a high-powered corporate career at BMO's Institute for Learning. On the outside, Manja was killing it. Executive track. Great salary. Respect. Security. But when she was asked to pour months of her life into a project she didn't believe in, something shifted. She walked away from the comfort, the salary, the stability, because her integrity mattered more than her safety. She sold a rental property to fund her business, had three small kids, and her husband, a police officer whose core values are security and stability, watched his wife blow up their predictable life. Fast forward to today: Manja runs a thriving learning and development company serving the skilled trades industry, she's pioneering AI applications to capture retiring tradespeople's wisdom, she's writing a book, raising three kids, doing somatic therapy, acupuncture, and EMDR to heal childhood wounds. She's accomplished, capable, and deeply successful. And her biggest challenge? Learning that ease is safe. Learning to soften without losing her edge. Learning that she doesn't have to make everything uncomfortable just because comfort feels dangerous. In this raw, vulnerable conversation, Manja reveals: The hidden cost of learning "don't be a bother" as a child and how it shows up as chronic over-functioning in adulthood Why perfectionism isn't about excellence, it's about not being judged (and how she's learning to iterate instead) The moment she walked away from corporate security because integrity mattered more than safety, and what that cost her marriage How being "intimidating" is often just armor for women who never learned they're allowed to take up space Why driven, ambitious women gravitate toward discomfort because ease actually doesn't feel safe in their nervous system The somatic reality of high-functioning freeze and what it takes to finally soften How therapy, EMDR, and the Big Leap helped her expand her capacity for joy, ease, and contentment Why "it is what it is" is a cop-out sentence that keeps you stuck in patterns you could actually change What it means to be the strong, capable one everyone relies on while quietly crumbling under the weight of your own standards The marriage work required when one partner's core value is security and the other can't stop shaking the cage This episode is for you if you've ever: Been told you're intimidating when you're just trying to belong Left a room wondering if you were "too much" or took up too much space Walked away from security because staying would have cost you your integrity Found yourself making things harder than they need to be because ease feels unsafe Collapsed into bed exhausted while your mind races through tomorrow's to-do list Snapped at the people you love most after a long day of holding it together for everyone else Wondered why you can't just relax, chill out, or enjoy the success you've built Been praised for your strength while secretly feeling trapped by your own capability Known you're over-functioning but can't figure out how to stop without everything falling apart Guest Bio Manja Horner is a learning experience strategist and trusted advisor to companies who want to transform their business with training and team procedures and processes in a seamless, digital and easy-to-implement system. As founder of Boost, she's on a mission to create amazing employee experiences and get results for leaders in the skilled trades. She helps clients in the skilled trades and construction create inspiring, enriching, and all-encompassing experiences for better employee retention, integration, and education. Manja is also the author of the forthcoming book Passing the Torch in the Trades and a former corporate learning executive at a leading financial institution who left security to build a business rooted in integrity and impact. Find Manja on: Instagram: @Manja_horner LinkedIn Boost Ready to stop making everything harder than it needs to be? If Manja's story landed, it's because you recognize yourself in it. You're strong, capable, the one everyone turns to. You've built something impressive. But you're exhausted. You can't remember the last time something felt easy. And the idea of softening, of allowing ease, of not carrying it all? It terrifies you because doing feels safer than being. Here's what nobody tells you: Your strength isn't the problem. Your capability isn't the problem. The problem is that you learned a long time ago that being a burden wasn't safe, so you became the opposite. You became the rock. And now you're carrying weight that was never yours to carry. The Congruency Audit is where we look at the gap between the success you've built on the outside and the exhaustion you're feeling on the inside. We'll identify the exact patterns keeping you stuck in over-functioning, the childhood wounds driving your need to never be a bother, and what it's going to take for you to finally create success that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside. This isn't about doing more or being better. This is about learning that ease is safe. That softening doesn't mean losing your edge. That you can be strong AND allow support. That you can be capable AND let things be easy. Book your Congruency Audit: lisacarpenter.ca/audit This isn't about optimizing the version of yourself you built to survive. It's about creating congruence so the life you've built doesn't just look good, it finally feels right. If you listen on Spotify: Open the Spotify app on your phone.
