Samantha Tennant sits down with New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Mary Ellen Taylor to talk about her newest women's fiction novel, The Sky Beneath Her. Set on North Carolina's Outer Banks — nicknamed the Graveyard of the Atlantic — the book weaves between 1942, when a ship full of desperate passengers crosses U-boat-patrolled waters knowing they may not survive, and the present day, where a scuba diver who lost her mother at sea is finally forced to return to the water. Mary Ellen opens up about the history book that sparked the story, why she signed up for surf camp in her 50s, her seven-draft process, and the revelation that arrived mid-cookie-bake. She also teases her next book — a California-set story rooted in the early 1970s — and shares that The Sky Beneath Her is the June Amazon First Reads pick (free for Prime members, $1.99 for everyone else).
The hosts return after a multi-week break to recap life updates: an Outer Banks trip, an upcoming family trip to France, and a hilarious Buc-ee's convenience store stop. Major personal milestones and mishaps take center stage — Breeze earns his third-degree black belt with a dramatic board break, they deal with car trouble after a deer collision and a skunk incident, and they improvise by installing window air conditioners. The episode also dives into quirky news and conversations, from a controversial mermaid statue in Denmark and a new flatulence study to a gross-but-funny would-you-rather and movie talk about Disclosure Day and E.T.

A few weeks ago, Heather appeared as a guest on The Art of Hospitality Podcast, hosted by Adam Norko and Conrad O'Connell, expecting to talk about AI. They ended up talking about values. That conversation planted a question Heather has been sitting with ever since: if you train an AI on your processes without first being clear on what your business actually stands for, are you just automating the wrong thing, faster? Adam returns to the show for a third time to help answer that question. He is the founder of VR Growth, a consultancy working with vacation rental and PropTech companies, and someone who has seen this industry from multiple angles - as a marketing director for a large management company, a vendor-side executive at Point Central and Breezeway, a Chief Growth Officer, and now an independent consultant. He is also, by his own admission, a small Airbnb host on the Outer Banks, running five properties with his wife. The conversation moves through the gap between values written on a wall and values that actually show up in daily decisions, the leadership behaviours that make the difference, how AI can help operators discover and articulate what they genuinely believe in, and Adam's emerging thinking about self-selected communities of like-minded operators as the industry's next meaningful structural development. The through-line is clear: values have to come before systems, and community has to come before scale. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Michael explained that the show features flashbacks about Kyle's activities and is directed by four different directors, with Rebecca Cutter serving as the showrunner and writer, having adapted the novel by Mae Cobb. Michael shared his experience getting the role, noting that the casting directors were looking for a local actor in North Carolina and that the character required full frontal nudity, which initially concerned him but ultimately made him more interested in the part. Full Frontal Nudity Scene Discussion Michael discussed his experience with a full frontal nudity scene in a role, explaining that he was aware of the requirement during the hiring process. He worked with Rebecca Cutter and the intimacy coordinator to understand the scene's context and chose to go natural rather than using prosthetics. Nate praised Michael's performance as a bad guy, suggesting it required some natural rebelliousness. Acting and "Hunting Wives" Discussion Michael and Nate discussed Michael's approach to acting and life, emphasizing the importance of channeling energy and understanding one's own psyche. They praised Brittany Snow's performance in the series "Hunting Wives," finding her character relatable and well-acted. They noted the show's risque content and discussed its move from Starz to Netflix. Michael also shared his experience being cast in Outer Banks Season 2 and working with Brad Pitt in the F1 series. The release date for Season 2 of the Netflix show was mentioned to be late summer. F1 Racing Movie Engineering Role Michael explained his role as the lead engineer and strategy director in an F1 racing movie, describing the authentic experience of participating in a real race at Daytona International Speedway. He detailed how the team spent a week in rehearsals before filming the actual race scene, comparing the experience to being part of a real Super Bowl preparation. When asked about his entry into Hollywood acting, Michael mentioned moving to Hollywood in 2005 but the transcript ended before he could complete the details. Acting Career Transition Journey Michael discussed his career journey from bartending at the Mondrian Hotel across from the Comedy Store to pursuing stand-up comedy and eventually transitioning to acting. He explained how he developed his comedic skills through stage time and later became interested in drama to tell longer-form stories. The conversation also touched on his recent acting roles, including working with notable actors like Malin Akerman in "The Hunting Wives," and his current location base in Atlanta while working in various locations across the United States. Acting Career Transition Discussion Michael discussed his acting career transition from LA to Georgia, explaining how returning to his home state helped him rediscover his performing spirit and become more selective in his roles. He shared his experience working with Michael Madsen on the film "Blood Behind Us," noting that Madsen had played his father character before passing away last summer. The conversation ended with a brief mention of the upcoming Dallas International Film Festival. Blood Behind Us" Film Discussion Michael discussed his role as a hitman in the film "Blood Behind Us," which premieres at the Dallas Film Festival on April 26th. He explained how the character, known as Chameleon, has multiple personalities and plays different roles throughout the movie. Michael expressed interest in producing his own projects in the future, particularly in sci-fi and supernatural genres, and mentioned his desire to work with Taylor Sheridan on a potential role in "Land Man." The film will also be screened at the Cannes marketplace, where it hopes to attract buyers for distribution. Quick recap Nate interviewed Michael Aaron Milligan about his acting career, focusing on his roles in "Hunting Wives," "F1" with Brad Pitt, and his upcoming film "Blood Behind Us" premiering at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 26th. They also talked about Michael's future producing endeavors and his aspirations to lead a sci-fi or supernatural series in the next 5-10 years, with Nate suggesting connections to Taylor Sheridan's projects.

The hour closes with “In Other News,” featuring a safari guide killed by an elephant in South Africa, a robot dominating a Beijing half marathon, a shark encounter off North Carolina's Outer Banks, a skydiving accident at Virginia Tech, Shaquille O'Neal's blunt comments on celebrity culture, and a NASA astronaut's emotional post-space experience. Currituck Beach Lighthouse, photo by Jeremy D’Entremont This is an edited version of an interview that was first heard in August 2021. Our guest is Meghan Agresto, manager of the Currituck Beach Light Station in Corolla, North Carolina. Currituck Beach Lighthouse—the northernmost of six light stations on the Outer Banks—began service on December 1, 1875. It was the last of the tall brick lighthouses built on the Outer Banks. The 162-foot-tall tower has an unpainted red brick exterior. After automation in 1937, the site fell into disrepair until the nonprofit Outer Banks Conservationists renovated the station's buildings and opened the site to the public in 1990. Meghan Agresto with Light Hearted host Jeremy D’Entremont Meghan Agresto has been the resident site manager of the Currituck Beach Light Station for more than 20 years. Meghan is the modern day lighthouse keeper, along with her partner, Luis Garcia. They raised two sons in a house on the property. When the boys were young, Corolla had no school of its own, so Meghan started a school for local children.

This is the fifth episode in a new season of our Main Street NC series. We're visiting communities across the state to hear from local leaders about the issues and challenges they're facing.About 20 beach houses have recently collapsed into the ocean in Buxton on the Outer Banks. Local leaders there say the cause isn't just climate change or sea-level rise. They blame a deteriorating jetty installed by the U.S. Navy decades ago to protect a Cold War submarine monitoring station. Local and federal officials have responded to the rapid erosion by promising beach renourishment and jetty repairs, but those projects might not be a long-term solution for one of North Carolina's most fragile beach communities. To learn more about Buxton's beach erosion problems and what comes next, WUNC News' Colin Campbell visited the community and spoke with Buxton Civic Association President Heather Jennette and Vice President Brian Harris.
