Karol Markowicz sits down with Zachary Kussin, real estate editor at the New York Post, for a wide-ranging conversation about journalism, New York City real estate, personal style, resilience, and the value of embracing who you really are. Kussin shares the unlikely story of how a Craigslist job posting helped launch his journalism career, eventually leading him from The Real Deal to the New York Post. He explains what makes real estate reporting such a unique beat and how years of hard work, unexpected opportunities, and a little luck shaped his career. The conversation also turns personal as Kussin recounts losing nearly everything when a seven-alarm fire tore through his New York City apartment building. The experience gave him an opportunity to rebuild—not just his home, but a space that genuinely reflected his personality, travels, and lifelong love of antiques, vintage jewelry, fashion, and design. Karol and Zachary discuss growing more confident with age, finding your people, developing meaningful relationships, pursuing unconventional passions, and refusing to change yourself simply to fit other people's expectations. Kussin also shares his philosophy for living a happier life: embrace adventure, pursue what genuinely interests you, take chances even when you don't know the outcome, and have the confidence to be yourself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ralph Friedman is the most decorated detective in NYPD history — with 2,000 on-duty arrests, 5,000 additional assists, and 219 awards — and in this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he finally tells the complete truth about what policing in New York City's most dangerous precincts really looked like from the inside during the most violent and most lawless era available. Stationed at the South Bronx's notorious 41st Precinct — known as Fort Apache — he served during one of New York City's most dire periods, recording 2,000 on-duty arrests, 5,000 additional assists, and 15 shootings — four of them fatal — before a rookie in a radio patrol car T-boned his passenger door at high speed on August 1, 1983, leaving him with 23 broken bones including a pelvis broken in four places and a shattered hip that forced him into medical retirement at 34. He shares what the Bronx streets in the 70s and 80s really required of the officers working them, what criminals putting hits on him actually involved, the worst things he ever saw on the job, and what the stories from a career that produced the most decorated record in NYPD history actually sound like from the detective who lived every one of them. _____________________________________________ #NYPD #cops #truecrimestories #police _____________________________________________ Thank you to AG1 & HUNGRYROOT for sponsoring this episode: AG1: For a limited time, save 20% on your first subscription order of AG1 Next Gen or AG1 Pro at https://drinkag1.com/lockedin _____________________________________________ Hungryroot: Explore my Hungryroot Digital Cookbook "The Commissary Upgrade" at https://hungryroot.com/LOCKEDIN _____________________________________________  Connect with Ralph Friedman: https://www.bronxstreetwarrior.com/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/  _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction to Detective Ralph Friedman 00:22 Reflections on a Legendary Career 01:08 How He Became a Cop 03:25 First Day in the Bronx 04:34 An Officer's Gear in the 1970s 06:16 The Mental Toll of Policing 07:47 Public Respect and Deterrence 10:00 Case: Stopping a Justifiable Homicide 12:53 Public Sentiment Today vs. Back Then 15:08 First Arrest and Early Impressions 17:04 Specialization and the Black Liberation Army 19:34 Daily Danger and Chaos 22:40 Corruption and the Knapp Commission 24:16 A Rookie's Brush with Corruption 27:43 Changing Views on Women in Policing 29:57 Path to Detective 33:05 Plainclothes Work and Tactics 35:31 Shootout in the South Bronx 41:17 Aftermath of a Shooting 43:31 Close Calls and Street Survival Tips 47:20 Quirky Emergency Service Stories 51:03 Old School vs. Modern Training 53:52 Detective Work and Arrests 58:40 A Typical Day as a Detective 01:02:32 Taking Down a Gun and Grenade Cache 01:05:05 Reputation and Informants 01:07:55 Riding with Friends and a Street Crew 01:12:40 The Worst Call of His Career 01:14:40 When the System Fails 01:16:51 Fitting In with the Squad 01:18:04 Off-Duty Life and Arrests 01:21:28 The Attempt on His Life 01:27:07 A Date with an Assassin 01:29:25 The Trap Unfortunately Foiled 01:30:42 The Emotional Weight of Taking Lives 01:32:28 Respect eroding in Society 01:35:10 Detective Ranks Explained 01:38:41 Handling Bosses and Paperwork 01:40:41 The Frances Tavern Case That Haunts Him 01:45:40 Fighting Layoffs 01:48:41 The Accident That Ended It All 01:53:20 Recovery and the Next Chapter 01:58:40 Life Advice from a Legend 02:00:00 Final Thoughts and Thanks _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka

America has a crisis of young men—and Tony Woodlief believes fatherhood, faith, and stronger communities could be part of the answer. On The Karol Markowicz Show, Karol sits down with writer, political scientist, and author Tony Woodlief for a wide-ranging conversation about fatherhood, masculinity, parenting, faith, politics, education, artificial intelligence, and finding purpose in an increasingly disconnected culture. Woodlief explains why he believes too many young men have been left without meaningful friendships, employment, education, or connections to institutions and communities. He discusses the difference between simply being a parent and intentionally being a father, why modern portrayals of masculinity often miss the mark, and what can be done to help men searching for direction and purpose. Karol and Tony also explore his unconventional approach to politics and federalism, including why he believes massive school districts have weakened parents’ control over their children's education and why breaking them into smaller, locally accountable districts could produce better results. Plus, Tony offers his provocative prediction about artificial intelligence and the future of writing and art, explains why AI may expose rather than destroy bad creative work, and shares the simple daily practice he believes can dramatically improve your life: intentional gratitude. It’s a thoughtful conversation about raising children, becoming better men, strengthening families, reclaiming local control, and finding meaning in a rapidly changing America.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if the key to building a successful life isn’t having everything figured out—but simply doing the job that’s right in front of you? On this episode of The Karol Markowicz Show, Karol sits down with Matthew Hennessey, editor of Free Expression at The Wall Street Journal, for a wide-ranging conversation about career, marriage, ambition, failure, and finding your path in life. Hennessey shares his unconventional journey from chasing an acting career in Hollywood to becoming a journalist and eventually landing at The Wall Street Journal. He explains why meeting his wife became a pivotal moment in both his personal life and career, and why young people may have it backwards when they believe they need to establish themselves professionally before getting married. Karol and Matthew also discuss the value of taking risks, learning to do difficult things, supporting children as they pursue uncertain dreams, and why success often comes one small step at a time. Hennessey also explains what The Wall Street Journal represents beyond finance and Wall Street, shares his concerns about the possibility of a major economic downturn, and offers a surprisingly optimistic perspective on artificial intelligence and the economy. Finally, he leaves listeners with a simple piece of advice that has guided his career and life: Do the job that’s in front of you, and the future will take care of itself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 181: Business + Life Advice from My 87 Year Old Papa   Sometimes the best business advice comes from someone who has simply lived a lot of life.   In this very special episode, I'm sitting down with my 87-year-old Papa to talk about business, relationships, money, mistakes, faith, and what really matters in the long run. He spent decades building and running a business, and I wanted to give you a chance to hear some of the wisdom he's picked up along the way. But honestly, some of the most meaningful lessons had nothing to do with business at all.   We talk about why relationships matter in business, the importance of knowing your numbers and valuing what you bring to the table, how to handle mistakes with honesty, and why there really are no “bad days”—just days that are better than others.   In this episode, you'll discover: Why treating people with kindness and making them feel seen can become one of your greatest strengths in business Why you need to know your numbers and value your work without taking advantage of people How to handle mistakes with humility, honesty, and integrity Why relationships and genuine connection can matter more than simply making a sale What decades of life and business experience taught my Papa about trusting God Why the legacy you leave behind is about so much more than business success   This conversation reminded me that building a successful business is important, but building a meaningful life is even more important. If you're looking for Business Christian Self Help that goes beyond strategy and gets to the heart of how we lead, work, and live, I think you're going to love this one.   And make sure you stay until the end—Papa has a few fun facts and stories you're not going to want to miss!   If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone you love and let me know which piece of Papa's wisdom stood out to you most.   Want more free resources to help you grow your business and overcome what's holding you back? In this message from the Life Advice series, Pastor Danny de Armas explores Proverbs 6 and challenges us to rethink the purpose of our work, our attitude toward responsibility, and the impact our everyday efforts can have on others. Drawing from the example of the ant, this message reminds us that work is more than a paycheck. It is part of how we were made, an opportunity to serve with excellence, and a way to contribute to the flourishing of those around us. We are encouraged to work wholeheartedly, stay focused on a greater purpose, and live with a future perspective, trusting that faithful effort today can have lasting rewards tomorrow. (07/26/2026)

You've probably seen Sara post about how she's obsessed with eating a specific brand of cookie dough. Today the founder and CEO of Doughy, Kelly Ramey, joins Oversubscribed to talk about her creation. The clean, six-ingredient cookie dough sold out at Erewhon within days of launch and you can now find Doughy in Whole Foods, Target, and Costco nationwide.Millions of pounds of cookie dough are sold each year but here's the incredible part: Kelly is still the only full-time employee. We get into how scrappy events and a manufacturing background prepared her for the chaos of building a food brand, why hundreds of failed recipes led her to cashews as the base ingredient, and the surprising origin story of the chocolate chip cookie itself. Kelly walks us through sourcing cashews from a farmer in Mozambique and maple syrup from Vermont, why she still hands out samples herself, and what it actually took to land the product in 2,300 stores nationwide. If you've ever wondered what it means to "bleed" for your company, this is it.// MORE FROM DOUGHY //You can purchase Doughy at eatdoughy.com or at Whole Food, Target, Erewhon, and Costco.Follow @eatdoughy on Instagram and @doughy on TikTok.// SPONSORS // Ritual: Save 25% on your first month at Ritual dot com slash FOSTER. On this episode of “Tommy Talk,” Tommy dives into the importance of making time for your best friends. It's easy to let busy schedules, endless obligations, and the demands of everyday life take over, leaving little time for the people who matter most. Sometimes life starts controlling us instead of the other way around. After spending a weekend with my best friend, I was reminded just how important it is to make time for the people who fill our cups. Our best friends celebrate our wins, support us through life's toughest moments, and remind us that we're never alone. This episode is a love letter to our best friends, and a reminder that life is richer when it’s shared with people who genuinely care about us. Today's main event: how a physician-owned practice negotiates with UnitedHealthcare. UHC is notorious for raising premiums 20 to 30% while offering physician reimbursement bumps of about 1%. I walk through exactly how we push back at Eye Health Northwest, phone messages that spell out the math, letters to patients, and yes, taking the contract to the brink when we have to. This works because we're large and physician-owned, which is why I make the case for other independents to consider joining forces locally instead of selling to private equity or chasing the Sound Physicians model. After the break, a quick "don't do that" tip, and some actual advice for the residents and interns who just started on July 1. Takeaways: UnitedHealthcare consistently reimburses below other commercial payers, often raising premiums 20 to 30% while offering physician reimbursement increases as low as 1%, the ability to push back depends heavily on practice size and market share Eye Health Northwest formed 40 years ago when three independent practices merged, creating the scale needed to stay physician-owned, avoid private equity, and negotiate meaningfully with big insurers, a model Will recommends for other independents willing to stay local The most effective renegotiation tactic is patient transparency: phone messages, letters, and clear math about premium hikes versus reimbursement stagnation motivate patients to pressure the payer directly, which is what ultimately gets big insurers to blink Covering an entire long-weekend call solo across all practice sites is a very different animal than typical private-practice call, Will openly acknowledges that private-practice ophthalmologists have lost perspective compared to residency call at a level one trauma center Advice for new residents: check vision before consulting ophthalmology, stay humble, listen to patients before the system beats it out of you, protect a few minutes a week for something completely outside medicine, and invest heavily in your co-residents — no one else will fully understand what you're going through To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)!
