Most people tend to avoid having end of life care discussions. Who wants to talk about dying when talking about living is much easier and exciting! It's much easier to envision a peaceful death where one dies quietly in their sleep. This scenario although idyllic, is not the norm and choices about end-of-life care often happen in the moment and can be very stressful for family members who must make life-altering decisions with little input or information from their critically ill loved one. Learn all about planning your end-of-life care in this week's episode.Support the showListen on 91x FMYou can listen to episodes of "Changing Lives" on 91x FM each Monday (except for holidays) at 9:05am. Hospice care has a long history spanning over 1,500 years. Its origins can be traced back to fourth-century Rome when a compassionate woman named Fabiola established a place to care for the sick and dying. This concept of hospice was further embraced by the Catholic Church, which continued to provide care to the poor and sick in hospices throughout the following centuries. Notably, hospice care during this time wasn't limited to individuals with terminal illnesses.Learn more about the history of hospice care in this week's episode.Support the showListen on 91x FMYou can listen to episodes of "Changing Lives" on 91x FM each Monday (except for holidays) at 9:05am. In 2018, Stats Canada reported that as many as 1 in 4 Canadians provide care for family members and friends who have a long-term condition or illness. Reports show that an average caregiver spends as few as 1-4 hours/week on caregiving duties or as many as 20 hours/week for intensive caregivers. In fact, a report by Volunteer Canada revealed that Baby Boomers and Senior Adults provided more than 1 billion volunteer hours in 2010! Clearly volunteering provides non-profits and charities a wealth of expertise, which allows these organizations to provide a multitude of services for free or a very low cost to their communities. However, the benefits of volunteering runs both ways and seniors can also gain many rewards from their volunteer efforts.  Find out more in this week's Changing Lives podcast.Listen on 91x FMYou can listen to episodes of "Changing Lives"  on 91x FM each Monday (except for holidays) at 9:05am.  Hospice Quinte is grateful to the support that 91x FM provides in producing the "Changing Lives" podcast.About Hospice QuinteHospice Quinte provides individuals, their families, and caregivers with compassionate end of life care, by attending to their physical, psychosocial, and practical needs, and offering empathetic care to those who are grieving through visiting hospice services and support groups.  All Hospice Quinte programs and services are provided by compassionate, well-trained volunteers and staff at no charge to the individual or their family.  Hospice Quinte serves a population of over 102,000 in Quinte West, Belleville, Deseronto, Tyendinaga Township and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. In 2020 Hospice Quinte introduced two new programs – Bereavement Companionship and Caregiver Companionship.  Often, people who are caring for someone with a terminal illness don't have the time or energy to come to a support group.  The Caregiver Companionship program allows caregivers to schedule a weekly call with a compassionate volunteer that can be done at a time that works for them without leaving their home.  While many people who are grieving find a benefit from support groups – some people are more private and prefer to have one on one conversations about their loss.  The Bereavement Companion program answers that need.  Empathetic volunteers are matched with people who are grieving the loss of a loved one for weekly supportive telephone calls.
