Lake View Cemetery is located in Cleveland, Ohio and is affectionately known as Cleveland's Outdoor Museum. And that is for good reason because there are thousands of beautiful trees, flowers, memorials, monuments and even a dam. During the Gilded Age, this was the cemetery to the elite. Burials continue today for anyone. Behind the iron gates lie the remains of many well known people, including a former President. And one memorial is dedicated to those lost in a tragic and deadly school fire. Theresa Chambers talks with Fr. David Richardson of Epiphany Parish about his vocation story and a powerful rosary sign that led him to the priesthood. They also walk listeners through Catholic funeral rites—Mass, prayers, anointing of the sick, apostolic pardon, burial procedures—and discuss cremation, green burial options, and how to plan a Catholic funeral in advance. The episode emphasizes pastoral care, grieving together, and practical steps families can take to prepare wills and funeral arrangements.
Misha Glenny and guests discuss an ancient civilisation who lived over 2000 years ago in the southwest of modern-day Libya. During prehistoric times, the Sahara Desert was greener and even had large lakes, but for the last 5000 years it has been a hyperarid environment. Extreme swings of temperature and limited surface water might make the Sahara seem like an inhospitable place to live, but an ancient people in North Africa known to us as the Garamantes thrived there. Following descriptions of the Garamantes in Roman and Greek texts, the Garamantes have often been seen as pastoral nomads, or as tribal barbarians on the periphery of the Mediterranean world. But the work of archaeologists in recent decades has revealed something different. Evidence suggests a society with flourishing towns and cities, complex underground irrigation systems, a key role in trade routes across the Sahara – and may give us a broader view of ancient history.WithDavid Mattingly Emeritus Professor of Roman Archaeology at the University of LeicesterFarès Moussa Visiting Fellow at the University of Southampton and Cultural Heritage ConsultantAndJosephine Quinn Professor of Ancient History and Fellow of St John's College, University of CambridgeProducer: Martha OwenReading list:C.M. When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised in the Jordan river too (Luke 3:21). When we get baptised today, we can know that Jesus is stood there with us, praying and identifying himself with us. Baptism is one way in which we can identify ourselves with Jesus and follow in His footsteps. As He was baptised, Jesus was announced as God's son. We too, can be born of God, if we choose to receive Him and believe in Him (John 1:12-13). Finally, just as Jesus' burial proved that he had died and paved the way for his resurrection, we too are buried with him through baptism, and just as Christ was raised from the dead, we too may receive new life (Romans 6:4.) -------- For more information about Breathe New Life Church or if you'd like to make a decision to follow Jesus, visit our website here: https://breathenewlife.church/becomeachristian
What's the episode about? In this episode, hear Ruth E. Toulson on the necropolitics of the ordinary, dying and death in Singapore, anthropology, burials, funeral directors and morticiansWho is Ruth?At Johns Hopkins, Ruth E. Toulson is a lecturer for the Master of Arts in Museum Studies program. Toulson is a sociocultural anthropologist whose research focuses on the dead body, and death's material culture in Southeast and East Asia. Trained at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge, Toulson brings to Johns Hopkins a multi-sited collaborative international research agenda that combines long-term ethnographic fieldwork and in-depthwork in museum collections. Toulson brings significant teaching and advising experience at the graduate level in anthropology, material culture studies, and critical museum studies. As a whole, Toulson's scholarship explores the intersection ofdeath and the state, particularly in moments of sociopolitical transition.Toulson probes this intersection by focusing particularly on the dead body as a form of highly politicized material culture. Supported through numerous external grants, including those from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation, and the Hong Kong Research Council, thisresearch program has resulted in published work, including a book and numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, including in Journal of Material Culture.Toulson recently delivered the keynote address at University ofMelbourne, Redesigning Deathcare Conference, and has given invited lectures at the Gatty Lecture Series (Cornell), The Centre for the Study of Death and Society (University of Bath), The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies (Harvard), and at the Council for Southeast Asia (Yale), among otherinvitations. Yanara Friedland is a writer, translator, and educator born in Berlin. She is the author of Uncountry: A Mythology (2016) winner of the Noemi Press Fiction Book Award and Groundswell (2021) selected for Essay Press's Book Award and Thanatographies (U Alabama Press, 2026). Her work explores the effects of dislocation on memory and language, engaging with multilingual and transhistorical spaces through archival research and in collaboration with other artists. She teaches creative writing and literature at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies and co-runs the reading series Mutter Courage in the Pacific Northwest. Thanatographies is a genre-defying meditation on disappearance, memory, and the porous boundaries between the living and the dead. In poetic prose, Yanara Friedland weaves together dreamscapes, historical fragments, personal recollections, and philosophical inquiry to explore the afterlives of loss and survival. Moving through rooms, cities, forests, and archives, the text becomes a living document of insomnia, exile, and the spectral presence of women across time, including artists, revolutionaries, caretakers, and ghosts. Structured in four sections titled Room, Night, Medusas, and Burials, the book traverses inner and outer landscapes, from Berlin's haunted streets to the intimate terrain of the body. Friedland's voice is both lyrical and incisive, drawing on figures such as Unica Zürn, Rosa Luxemburg, and Else Lasker-Schüler to illuminate the intersections of gender, violence, and historical erasure. The result is a deeply embodied poetics of wakefulness, where hidden life remembers and speaks. Thanatographies is written for readers of experimental literature, feminist theory, and contemporary poetics. The book resonates with artists, scholars, and seekers who are compelled by the aesthetics of mourning, the politics of memory, and the radical potential of language to hold what is otherwise unspeakable. Happy Halloween! Today on Sense of Soul we have Dr Kate Cherrell, she is a writer and broadcaster specialising in paranormal history, 19th-century Spiritualism and British folklore. She is the author of the gothic novel Begotten (2025) and a forthcoming work of non-fiction, Buried England (2026). She writes commercially on supernatural history and has worked with museum and cemetery trusts nationwide. As a paranormal historian, she has co-hosted Haunted Homecoming with Jack Osbourne and Jonathan Ross, Unexplained: Caught on Camera, The Yorkshire Exorcist II and has provided historical expertise on Paranormal: Britain's Last Witch, Weird Britain and Spectre or Spectacle. She received the GPN Top Investigator award in May 2025 for her work in paranormal investigation. She has blogged under the name Burials and Beyond since 2017 and – when not exploring cemeteries or haunted locations – she can usually be found in some dark, dusty corner with a big glass of wine and a good book. She is the author of ‘Begotten' a neo-Victorian novel set in the fictional county of Duncain, spiritualism impacts an Anglo-Irish family. Following the death of her father, Alice Crofton returns to her family's crumbling house, believing she will settle the estate and leave. But nothing in Duncain ever truly leaves. In her absence, spiritualism has gripped the rural county and charismatic mediums have encroached into the household, setting their sights on Alice's family - and her inheritance. Alice tries to hold on to her family and her sanity as hysteria and hauntings take over all she once knew. Written in gothic and ghost story traditions, Begotten's dark - and sometimes humorous - narrative raises questions about the trustworthiness of one's senses and the very nature of ghosts. https://katecherrell.com https://burialsandbeyond.com https://www.facebook.com/burialsandbeyond/ www.instagram.com/burialsandbeyond www.twitter.com/burialsbeyond Book Link: https://www.collectiveinkbooks.com/roundfire-books/our-books/begotten-gothic-novel Visit: www.senseofsoulpodcast.com

Unearthing horrifying truths, this episode tackles the Catholic Church's unspeakable abuses at Irish mother-baby homes, where hundreds of infants, born "out of wedlock," were tragically left to die and buried in mass graves. We expose how religious doctrine, intertwined with pervasive societal shame and male unaccountability, created a brutal system designed to control women and punish perceived "sins". It's a stark reminder of what happens when piety trumps compassion, showing the urgent need for secular governance and a society that values every life. This isn't just history; it's a chilling warning.News Source: Ireland to begin excavation of mass grave at church-run mother-baby home By Clodagh Kilcoyne for Reuters July 8, 2025
Join us at the Institute for the Study of Feminine Myth--$10 "Thinker's Tavern" sessions on Thursdays in July!https://instituteforfemininemyth.org/thinkers-tavern This week's podcast is about Libitina, Roman goddess of funerals, corpses, and burials. We discuss the debated etymology of her name--is she connected to Venus and to voluptuous pleasure, or is that an error? Varro connects Libitina to "libido", and we also need to consider the ancient Etruscan goddess Alpanu, who is said to be Libitina's forerunner. What we may find is a different attitude toward the connection between life and death.

Send us a textVictor, Evelyn, and Mark hang out this week to talk about Mother's Day, The Met Gala, dudes standing up, parenting, and what to do with their bodies.
I'm reading and talking about Ted Gioia's "Immersive Humanities Course," 52 weeks of World Classics. This week's reading was the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Somehow I did not get Ted's recommended translation by Susan Hollis. Instead, I had the gigantic and very, very beautiful reproduction of the complete Papyrus of Ani. This edition had a huge influence on my week "in" Egypt. The Book of the Dead isn't really one book; at the time of its writing (around 1300 BC) it was common to have a papyrus scroll of spells and directions placed in the coffin with the deceased. In this case, the priest Ani had died and this is his scroll. There have been many such scrolls, and pieces of scrolls, found in various tombs across Egypt. Each section of the scroll contains a text that has, for modern purposes, been called a chapter. Many scrolls have many “chapters” in common, but so far no scroll has all of them. On top of that, the chapters can be in any order. The chapters (are they prayers? Spells? Opinions seem split.) are, for the most part, pretty obscure. We spend some time reading excerpts, just to get a sense of them. There really isn't a description of how a person might become “spiritualized” or “pure.” Everything is instruction for the dead in the afterlife. Here are a few more thoughts about this reading. It might seem a little random, but this reading felt a little random, too:Until the Rosetta Stone was found in 1820, the text was completely unknown. The guess was that it was a book of wisdom similar to our Bible. That's actually completely wrong—none of it is oriented toward the living. The text is all about the god Osiris, who was murdered, mourned and buried. Later myths tell of Osiris' resurrection. The vignettes are personalized, in this case for the priest Ani (and his wife Tutu).Burials apparently re-enacted the death of Osiris in ritual form, delivering the deceased to the point of the weighing of the heart. There are prayers to open the deceased's mouth, ears, and eyes in the afterlife, because all of these would be necessary to live there. There is debate whether the myth created the ritual, or did the burial ritual arise first, with the myth developing around it later to explain the actions? It's interesting to me that we can't know based on what the Egyptians left behind.Judgment in the afterlife is the literal weighing of the deceased's heart against a feather! (I would definitely not pass.) The feather is called a ma'at, and is “Truth” or “Rightful Order.” If you are found to have a light heart, you can pass to the good afterlife, the Field of Reeds. The heart is the single most important part of a person, living or dead. It's the engine of the body and the seat of both emotions and intelligence. In the afterlife it was very important not to lose your heart, even though it was now outside of your body thanks to the mummification process. The Egyptians saw death as the confrontation with nonexistence and irrationality. The goal of weight your heart was to travel as an akh, in the sun and in order. The Book of the Dead is a guide to thwart the chaos of the universe, and even the gods had to contend with that disorder.Words, images and reality were a unity in Egyptian thought. The images in the scrolls function as text, and all of it is real. In drawing or writing things, they take on reality. In fact, this was why defacing the name of a king would be regarded as a capital crime; it was no better than assaulting or murdering the king himself. Many gods are represented by animal faces or body parts. Interestingly, this wasn't meant to...
