The Carney era has officially begun. In his first week in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Mark Carney signalled a break from the performative theatrics that have defined federal politics in recent years. His new Liberal government is moving swiftly — scrapping the consumer carbon tax from law, cutting income taxes, and — more ambitiously — planning legislation to fast-track major national infrastructure projects. But skepticism is already mounting. Some Indigenous and environmental groups are voicing early concerns about whether promised consultations will be meaningful. Carney may be extending an olive branch to Alberta, but whether it results in a new pipeline remains to be seen.Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is grappling with growing separatist sentiment from within her own United Conservative Party. With party insiders pushing for a referendum on independence, Smith is walking a political tightrope. And she may not be the only one. As Pierre Poilievre campaigns to return to Parliament via a byelection in rural Alberta, could he face similar pressures? This week on West of Centre, host Kathleen Petty speaks with Laura Osman of The Logic, Dave Cournoyer of the Daveberta podcast, and University of Calgary political scientist Lisa Young.
In this episode, I'm joined by Lisa Young, a proud wife, mother, and homeschooling advocate, as we dive deep into why more Black families are choosing to reclaim control of their children's education and influences. We explore homeschooling not just as an educational alternative — but as an act of resistance, cultural preservation, and community rebuilding. We talk about the importance of creating intentional learning spaces, rebuilding the village, and protecting the futures of our children by giving them a foundation rooted in truth, identity, and legacy. If you've ever questioned the traditional school system or thought about how to raise free, grounded minds in today's world — this conversation is for you.
It's federal election season and if we look at past voting trends in Alberta we see a lot of blue. The CBC's Rob Brown breaks down how our province became known as a conservative stronghold, and political scientist Lisa Young zooms in on Calgary ahead of Monday's vote.
While most Canadians are gearing up to head to the polls, some are looking for an escape plan. This week, we're examining the deep roots of Western alienation, Danielle Smith's separatist flirtations, and what could erupt if Mark Carney's Liberals sweep to power. To do that, producer Sam Konnert heads out to Alberta to talk to some voters, and calls up Preston Manning, the man behind the conversation. Later, host Noor Azrieh sits down with Dr. Lisa Young for a serious reality check. And the latest on the utter sidelining of Indigenous issues, a polling update, and why you should get your arse out to the polls on April 28th. Alberta is back in the red, with the government forecasting a $5.2-billion deficit for Budget 2025 — its first in years. Finance Minister Nate Horner warns the financial picture could worsen, especially if Donald Trump's proposed tariffs take effect. Despite the bleak outlook, the UCP government is introducing a personal income tax cut. Critics argue the budget lacks focus — or a real plan for the worst-case scenario. Host Jim Brown breaks down the numbers with political scientist Lisa Young, former NDP cabinet minister Deron Bilous, and conservative strategist Amber Ruddy. Later, economist Trevor Tombe weighs in on the province's decision to run a deficit rather than balance the budget or reconsider its plans for the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund.

Arts graduate education is uniquely positioned to deliver many of the public good needs of contemporary Canada. For the Public Good: Reimagining Arts Graduate Programs in Canadian Universities (U Alberta, 2024) argues, however, that graduate programs must fundamentally change if they are to achieve this potential. Drawing on deep experience and research, the authors outline how reformed programs that equip graduates with advanced skills can address Canada's most vexing challenges and seek action on equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization. In the episode, the authors, Loleen Berdahl, Jonathan Malloy and Lisa Young, chart how current approaches to graduate education emerged and make a data-informed case for change. We also discuss an evidence-based vision for reimagining arts graduate education and actor-specific steps to achieve this potential. Today's episode is a conversation I had with Lisa Young and the timing is perfect as we are heading into the winter season here in the US and many of you listening will be walking through the season with the She Is Awakening seasonal journal. Lisa and I talked about the book she wrote with her husband Ed “A Path Through Pain,” which came out of experiencing the sudden passing of their oldest daughter Lee Beth a few years ago. The subtitle says How faith deepens and joy grows through what you would never choose. And we talk about that in this conversation and it's actually the journey through the Winter journal. None of us would choose the hard path of a winter season yet the deepening of our faith as we surrender our season to God is sometimes hard to explain. Whether or not you find yourself today walking through a hard winter season… we all face them …and even though we wouldn't choose them we can prepare for them. The winter journal is available this week and you can find the ordering information in the show notes. I'm excited about you hearing my conversation with Lisa and know it will be helpful and encouraging to so many of you. **************Links and Credits************ Winter Journal: https://amzn.to/48baCCC Instagram: https://bit.ly/SusanBethInstagram Pinterest: https://bit.ly/SusanBethPinterest The SHE IS Podcast: https://bit.ly/thesheispodcast Intro & Outro Music Credit: Music: https://www.purple-planet.com - License Free Background Music Credit: Alexander Blu https://www.facebook.com/AlexanderBluMusic/

Experiencing a significant loss or trauma often leads to an identity crisis, a sensation comparable to losing footing on solid ground. You may suddenly feel untethered, as if the person you once knew as "you" has evaporated, replaced by an unfamiliar stranger. Your faith may seem hollow, your relationships distant. It's like you're lost in your own life, and you don't know how to get back. Our guests this week share how they coped with grief and hardship, and how they found their way back from feeling disoriented and disconnected from themselves. Senior pastor of Fellowship Church Ed Young and his wife Lisa share the heart wrenching story of their daughter, LeeBeth, and her struggle with addiction, and how it forever altered the course of their lives. Dr. Morgan Cutlip looked forward to motherhood, but was quickly faced with the real struggles that come alongside it, and made it her life's work to help mothers cope with that loss of self, and show them how to remember who they are again. I still can't believe it to this day, but He did, and He has, and I know He will. We had just experienced something together that nobody wants to experience, but it was something that God was walking with us together.” - Lisa Young “Ed said right after LeeBeth passed away, ‘We will never, ever, ever be the same. We won't do church the same, I won't minister the same, I won't pastor the same.' And that's in a good way, and so it's continually God showing us new ways to live past this point of grief.” - Lisa Young “Pour your heart out to God, your anger out to God, your questions out to God, but also realize, Man, God's got this, He's got me.” - Ed Young “When things started happening, things that were painful, I was able to draw upon what God had given me, what God had instilled in me, and that's how joy and pain can coincide.” - Lisa Young “Whatever we face, joy can be ever-present. It seems distant at times, but it's ever-present because of His Presence in my life.” - Lisa Young “I think that we're in a society right now that is like, ‘Feelings are facts,' and they're just not. We put a lot of emphasis on feelings, but feelings are signals. Feelings are a warning bell that are calling you to tune in to you and say, ‘What's going on with me?'” - Dr. Morgan Cutlip “I just stay in conversation with God all day. I feel like it's a running dialog, and this really is what helps me in so many ways of feeling like I'm never really alone. I am in a relationship with Someone who knows me deeply, who loves me, who doesn't give me more than I can handle; who I can turn things over to.” - Dr. Morgan Cutlip ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
