Welcome to this very special episode recorded live at the buzzing Birmingham Artisan Market in the stunning Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Some days just hit different. Sunshine bleeding through the trees, beats drifting from the bandstand. Streetfood filling the air with the smell of fire, fat, and spice. We're at Artisan Market, inside the Botanical Gardens — a place that felt like it shouldn't exist, but somehow does.Makers, hustlers, food slingers. Stories behind every stall, every dish. We showed up with mics, not to interview, but to listen. To talk. To eat. To try, in our own scrappy way, to bottle a little of the chaos and charm that made the day unforgettable. This is Birmingham, on a good day. Raw, loud, beautiful. The next Artisan market at Botanical Gardens is Saturday, 2nd August. The news about the deaths of two Meadowcreek High School students this week has left the school's community reeling as it mourns the teens. First came the news that the remains found off State Route 316 this week belonged to Susana Morales, 16, who had been missing since last summer. Then came the news that another student who had recently gone missing, Rodrigo Floriano Mayen, 17, was recently found dead from an overdose. Police said on Friday that the deaths are not related to one another. The deaths prompted Meadowcreek Principal Kevin Wood to send a letter to parents on Thursday. According to Gwinnett's local health department, GNR Public Health, the Georgia 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Act is designed to encourage people to seek help in the event of an overdose by providing “limited immunity from arrest, charge and prosecution for possession of certain drugs and drug paraphernalia for individuals who experience a drug overdose and are in need of medical care and for those who seek medical care in good faith for a person experiencing an overdose.” Wood told Meadowcreek parents that counselors and social workers are being made available to students and staff members who need to talk to someone as they grieve the deaths of Morales and Mayen. Duluth police have arrested a man, who has been described as a “witch doctor,” on charges that he allegedly raped a woman who went to him for a cleansing ritual last weekend. Hassan Shalgheen, 44, met the victim through social media and set up a meeting for a cleansing at his apartment. On February 5, the victim contacted police, however, and told them that, rather than receiving a cleansing, she had been assaulted instead. Shalgheen was arrested on February 6 and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. He has been charged with rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment and theft by deception. Police are now looking to see if there are other women who have also been victims. Anyone who has been a victim, or has additional information about the case, is asked to call the detective handling the case. In commemorating National School Counseling Week, Gwinnett County Public Schools held an awards program on Feb. 7 to recognize its top counseling award winners for 2023. Those honored included Dr. Natalie Pugh of Gwin Oaks Elementary School, Jameela Hall of Lilburn Middle School and Dr. Cedric Cooks of Norcross High School. In addition, Dr. Eric Davidson, principal at Duluth High School was recognized as the Mary Joe Hannaford Counselor Administrator of the Year Award. At the awards program, the school district also honored Duluth High School as a 2022 Recognized ASCA Model Program recipient. There are 34 counseling departments in the school system that are recipients of the RAMP National Award, which is awarded by the American School Counselor Association and recognizes schools that have established comprehensive data-driven counseling programs. This marks the second time Duluth High School has received RAMP recognition. A list of those honored can be found at Gwinnett Daily Post dot com. Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Wednesday that he has picked two members of Gwinnett County's legislative delegation to serve on a joint committee that provides legislative oversight for MARTA. State Senator Gloria Butler of Stone Mountain, and Representative Scott Hilton of Peachtree Corners, were among six legislators that Kemp appointed to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Overview Committee, also known as MARTOC. While MARTA has its own board of directors, made up of members from counties that participate in the transit system, MARTOC is a joint House and Senate committee that serves a statutory role to provide oversight for MARTA, particularly in budgetary matters. Although Hilton and Butler do represent districts that include parts of Gwinnett, their districts also include portions of counties which participate in MARTA. In Hilton's case, that is a portion of Fulton County. In Butler's case, it is a part of DeKalb County. Duluth recently announced its 2023 event schedule which features many favorites the city is known for in addition to a concert by A1A: The Original Jimmy Buffett tribute band and the return of Viva Las Duluth. The city's event season kicks off in March with the Duluth Farmers & Artisan Market. In addition to shopping with local vendors on the second and fourth Sunday of every month through November, each market features live music. Among the highlights: Flicks on the Bricks returns with a free movie under the stars on August 4 and 18. Fridays-N-Duluth (FND) kicks off May 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Downtown Duluth and runs through the end of July. FND will feature live music, food trucks and vendors. Themed nights will return on Fridays that fall on an even date. Themes will include Dog Days of Summer, Pride, Kick-Off to the Fourth, Whimsical Wonderland and International Night. The Lantern Parade will be included in International Night on July 28. City officials said signature events such as Back-to-School Bubblepalooza, Howl on the Green, Deck the Hall and Cookies & Cocoa with Santa will all be back for 2023. A1A will headline the Summer Stage Concert on August 12. Night at the Red Clay (formerly Cinema at the Red Clay) will continue in 2023 with an added twist — in addition to movie nights, there will be free concerts and comedy shows at the Red Clay Music Foundry. For more information please visit Duluth GA dot net. A plane that was damaged as it was forced to make an emergency landing on Interstate 985 last month did so because it had lost all power on its way back to Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville, according to report from federal investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report into the Jan. 24 incident near Buford and Sugar Hill shows the Piper PA-28-140 airplane had been on a instructional flight when it experienced trouble. It's landing on the interstate shut down I-985 for hours during rush hour traffic. The instructor was able to confirm that the plane's throttle was full forward and that its fuel air mixture was full rich after the plane lost power, but they were too far out from Briscoe Field, where they had taken off from, to make it back safely. The plane was damaged during the attempted emergency landing. It clipped a truck before landing and the landing gear under the nose collapsed during the landing as well. There was other damage that was also listed in the report. Despite the damage to the plane, the flight instructor and the student pilot were not injured during the landing. Jane Shaw lives at and manages Elmfield Estate: a family-run wellness centre, retreat facility, educational institute and home of a monthly artisan market. In today's conversation we talk about: Growing up surrounded by the wildness of nature The incredible history of her family home and estate Moving to the big city Leaving the corporate world behind to pursue wellbeing Trauma, Jungian Psychology and craniosacral therapy Coming “home” again And why everyone should experience a day at Elmfield (especially the upcoming Christmas markets). Burn, baby, BURN! Jocelynn is the one-woman-show behind her own line of art pieces, Wolf and Flame. She's mastered the age-old art of pyrography, the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. She does this all by hand and creates gorgeous, one of a kind works of art. We dive in to what brought her to Hawaii and the inspiration it brings her, as well as how her craft has acted as a means to keep her grounded and balanced. Be sure to check her and other talented artists and artisans at the Artisan Market at the Kona Brewery Block hosted by Hi/Co Coffee.
Erika is the one-woman-show behind Betty Moon Studios. She specializes in creating one of a kind resin pieces incorporating hand-foraged flora and fauna on to re-claimed, live-edge wooden slabs. Not only does she also have her own apparel, she hand-paints and repurposes old vinyl records into clocks of art. Very Cool! Be sure to check her and other talented artists and artisans at the Artisan Market at the Kona Brewery Block, hosted by Hi/Co Coffee.
Good Morning it's Tuesday February 16th and this is Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today - The stories of two of the 14 vendors who braved the 20-degree temperatures to sell at the local artisan market on Saturday. Today's episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. Learn more at Equilusfinancial.com. Member SIPC and FINRA. Now our feature story… When Dan Riggers first learned to craft ceramics, it wasn't entirely out of unbridled interest. He formerly lived in a town in Idaho that was so small they didn't even have a tavern. All they had was a ceramic shop. That was Peck in Nez Perce County, a panhandle town that hasn't crested the 240-person mark in more than 100 years. Riggers moved there after college. He's picked up a few tricks here and there over the decades and now sells houseware and holiday items at events like the outdoor artisan market at Pybus Public Market. But on Saturday, with light flurries adding to the few inches of snow that fell overnight, Riggers and 13 other vendors braved the 20-degree temperatures to sell to a trickling clientele. He has been selling at the market for about four years now. His goal? To make good, quality products at a fair price. Katie Atkinson, the Pybus marketing and events manager. She said that the market has been a lot of fun, even with the snow. They have heaters and even a fire pit. Typical during the winters vendors set up inside, but -- Covid.... Instead, this year the market has experimented with a few Saturdays of outdoor markets. In March of 2020 Lesley Freitag, the executive director of pybus public market announced that things would be different. And now almost a year later much of the activity remains outdoors. We spoke to Rebecca Weythman of Recycled Designs as well. She uses metals picked up at yard sales, second-hand stores, metal scrap yard — wherever she can get it — to create sculptures. She likes creating one-of-a-kind items. Weythman developed a love for welding in a course at Wenatchee Valley College. The single mom of three had returned to college to learn the business side of interior decorating and landscape design. But part of her curriculum was a 3-D sculpting class where she tried sculpting with metal for the first time. She was hooked. Now an 8 and a half -foot by 8 and a half -foot sculpture of hers sits outside Pybus after a buyer donated it to the market. Next --- When we are talking about gardening, a pest is usually something you want to take care of right away. But right away may not actually be the best time. It's often too late by the time you've discovered the pest. Most often, it takes awhile for the pest to reach a population level that causes noticeable damage; and by then, it may not be controllable. The best time to target pests is either when either they are more vulnerable, or when the population is small. The big question: when is that? That's where Growth Degree-Day or GDD models come into play. Knowing the accumulation of thermal heat units during the season can help you determine a pest's life or a plant's current growth stage. With that, you can track the accumulation of GDD to predict when to plant seeds, apply fertilizer or pesticides, and even estimate when to harvest crops. GDD data and models can even be useful for determining which plants are suitable for a given climate. What exactly is GDD or Growth Degree-Day? It's a calculation of the amount of heat accumulation above a set base temperature over time. The GDD model varies by the type of pests or plants. The formula itself is simple: add the high daily temperature to the low daily temperature --- then divided that by 2 -- that gives you the average daily temperature. Next, subtract the base temperature to get the total GDD units for that day. If the number is a negative, you record a zero for that day, and if it's a positive you add it to the total GDD for the year. Using this type of model can help account for the weather variations from year to year. To learn more about how you can use this to improve your garden, check out our full piece at wenatcheeworld.com On April 4th 1924 Noreen Nash was born in Wenatchee. She was an actress and writer, known for “Phantom from Space”, “The Devil on Wheels”, and the western drama “Giant” - which was the last of James Dean's three films. Finally, before we go we'd like to remember the life of Marilyn Compton King. Marilyn was a fourth generation member of pioneer Cooper Burgess family. She passed away earlier this month after a six week battle with Covid-19. When Marilyn was six years old, her family moved to Wenatchee, where she graduated from high school Through jr. high and high school, she worked at “The Porch.” She was a majorette, member of the Pep Club, Debate Team, and the Swimming Team. She also babysat, packed cherries, worked as a nursing home aide, and at Johnson's. The Queen Bee Artisan Market an indoor market open year-round in the beautiful tourist town of Lake Geneva, WI. Nancy has tripled in size in only three years! Going from 22 to now 75 artisans, the Queen Bee Artisan Market displays products from all over the USA with many artisans local to the area. The one requirement is everything must be handmade or upcycled. Here you can find everything from jewelry to pottery to home decor. Nancy is most proud of how supportive everyone is of each other. Many of the local artisans (the bees) also work at the store. The environment is cheerful and lively. Sounds like the place to be! Business Building InsightsIf you encounter an opportunity, take the leap! To form a co-op, start a company and begin networking with other artisans. It’s all about the experience when a customer walks into your store. Everybody is creative in some way. You just need to figure out what that way is for you. Have activities that draw people into your shop. Something that engages the customer. Examples are live artisan demonstrations or a special offering. Nancy talks about a good one in the podcast. As you get started, do some research to see what’s already out there. Go to different craft shows and art festivals to figure out how your product can be unique. Your margin is important. Make sure you’re not giving your product away. This is where many artisans get stuck and why they don’t make money.
