DescriptionEditing is one of the most misunderstood parts of the publishing process—but it's also one of the most important. In this episode of Write Effing Now, Hilary Jastram breaks down the different types of editing every author should understand before publishing a book. From proofreading and line editing to comprehensive developmental editing, she explains what each service includes, why they're necessary, and how they help transform a rough manuscript into a polished, professional book.Hilary also shares insights into the author-editor relationship, discusses the pros and cons of online versus offline editing tools, and offers practical advice on receiving constructive feedback without losing confidence. Whether you're writing your first book or considering a career in editing, this episode provides an inside look at the editing process and why it's one of the most valuable investments an author can make. The differences between proofreading, line editing, and developmental editing. What each level of editing includes—and when you need it.Why developmental editing focuses on structure, storytelling, and clarity. How professional editors provide feedback that strengthens your manuscript. Why Microsoft Word remains the preferred platform for editing long-form content. The advantages and limitations of Google Docs and other online editing tools. What traditional publishers expect before reviewing a manuscript. How to choose an editor who is experienced, knowledgeable, and invested in your success.Editing is much more than correcting grammar and punctuation—it's about helping writers communicate their ideas as clearly and effectively as possible.Hilary begins by explaining the three primary levels of editing: proofreading, line editing, and developmental editing. She walks listeners through each stage, illustrating how every level builds upon the previous one to improve clarity, organization, storytelling, and the overall reader experience. She emphasizes that developmental editing goes beyond sentence-level corrections by evaluating structure, pacing, character development, and logical flow to ensure a manuscript is engaging from beginning to end.The conversation then shifts to the relationship between authors and editors. Hilary discusses the importance of constructive feedback, encouraging writers to view editing as collaboration rather than criticism. She shares why great editors balance honesty with encouragement, helping authors improve while preserving their unique voice and creative vision.Favorite Quote"You write. One year after starting Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy, this is my honest TMS experience. I tried TMS therapy for my chronic, treatment-resistant depression, severe anxiety, and PTSD, and it completely changed my life. This controversial depression treatment isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, but after hitting rock bottom last summer, completing 52 total treatments by October, and returning for maintenance sessions in February, it gave me my life back. In this episode, I'm answering common TMS therapy questions, sharing my raw week-by-week PHQ-9 scores so you can see the real ups and downs of my mental health recovery, and discussing whether TMS is worth it. If you've ever wondered if TMS therapy works for severe anxiety or trauma recovery, I hope sharing my journey brings you clarity and hope.

Building Your Dream Home: What Buyers Need to Know About New Construction There is something special about being the very first person to live in a home. Fresh paint. Brand-new appliances. Modern layouts. Energy-efficient systems. And perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to create a space that reflects your lifestyle and vision from day one. On a recent episode of Talk Real Estate Roundtable, Melissa Wallace and Boston Connect Real Estate agent Tracy Grady discussed everything buyers should know before purchasing a newly built home. From understanding the differences between custom homes and spec homes to navigating the building process and selecting finishes, they shared valuable insights for anyone considering new construction. Why Buyers Love New Construction One of the biggest draws of new construction is simple: everything is new. For many buyers, the appeal lies in being able to choose finishes, personalize features, and move into a home that has never been lived in before. Rather than spending years updating an existing property, buyers can often start with a clean slate and create a home that fits their needs from the beginning. Whether it's selecting cabinetry, countertops, flooring, paint colors, or designing a floor plan that works for your family, new construction offers a level of personalization that existing homes often cannot match. Understanding the Different Types of New Construction Not all new construction homes are created the same. Buyers should understand the different options available before beginning their search. Custom Homes A custom home is built specifically for the buyer. Typically, buyers select the lot, work with builders and architects, review plans, and make decisions about nearly every aspect of the home's design. From room layouts to finishes and upgrades, the customization possibilities are extensive. Custom homes offer the most flexibility but often come with longer timelines and more decision-making throughout the process. Semi-Custom Homes Semi-custom homes provide a balance between personalization and convenience. Builders often begin with a proven floor plan and allow buyers to modify certain elements, such as finishes, layout adjustments, and selected structural options. This approach allows buyers to personalize the home without starting entirely from scratch. Spec Homes A spec home is built before a buyer is identified. The builder selects the floor plan, finishes, and design elements based on market demand and current trends. Once construction is complete, the home is listed for sale. Spec homes are ideal for buyers who may not have the vision to imagine a home from plans alone and prefer seeing a finished product before making a decision. Model Homes Model homes showcase a builder's craftsmanship and available upgrades. These homes often include premium finishes, upgraded fixtures, custom millwork, enhanced kitchens, specialty tile work, and other features that help buyers visualize possibilities for their own home. When touring a model home, it's important to ask what features are included in the base price and which items represent upgrades. While model homes can provide great inspiration, not every feature may be included in the advertised starting price. The Importance of Buyer Engagement During Construction One of the most important takeaways from the discussion was the need for buyers to stay actively involved throughout the building process. Regular site visits, attending builder meetings, reviewing plans, and confirming selections help ensure that expectations remain aligned throughout construction. Communication matters. Builders, agents, and buyers all benefit when decisions are documented and confirmed throughout the process. Even small misunderstandings can become costly if they are discovered after construction has progressed. Staying engaged allows buyers to address concerns early and helps keep projects moving smoothly. When Is the Best Time to Buy in a New Development? Many buyers wonder whether they should purchase at the beginning or near the end of a development. While every situation is different, there are several advantages to purchasing early: More Lot Choices Early buyers typically have access to the most desirable lots and locations within the development. Greater Customization Opportunities When construction has not yet begun, buyers often have more flexibility to customize floor plans, finishes, and upgrades. Potential Equity Growth As developments progress, construction costs and pricing often increase. Buyers who purchase early may benefit from appreciation as additional homes are completed and sold. Of course, buying early also means living through some ongoing construction activity while the neighborhood is being completed. For many buyers, however, the long-term benefits outweigh the temporary inconveniences. Building More Than a Home, Building a Community One unexpected benefit of new construction developments is the sense of community that often develops before homeowners even move in. Future neighbors frequently meet while visiting construction sites, attending builder meetings, and watching their homes take shape. By the time move-in day arrives, many residents have already formed relationships and friendships with the people who will become their neighbors. The Advantages of New Construction Beyond personalization and modern design, new construction offers several practical benefits: Brand-new systems and appliances Energy-efficient windows, insulation, and HVAC systems Lower maintenance costs in the early years of ownership Builder warranties on workmanship and structural components Modern floor plans designed for today's lifestyles Updated building codes and construction standards Many builders also provide warranty coverage that gives buyers added peace of mind during their first years of homeownership. Is New Construction Right for You? New construction isn't simply about buying a house it's about creating a home that fits your lifestyle, goals, and future plans. Whether you're a growing family looking for space, a homeowner looking to right-size into a home designed for your next chapter, or someone who simply wants the opportunity to personalize every detail, new construction offers possibilities that existing homes often cannot. The key is understanding your options, asking the right questions, and working with experienced professionals who can help guide you through the process. At Boston Connect Real Estate, we've helped buyers navigate every stage of new construction—from selecting lots and floor plans to final walkthroughs and closing day. If you're considering building your dream home, our team is here to help you make informed decisions every step of the way. Because every move should be a moving experience. Iron Radio: When More Training Isn't Better—Recovery, Identity, and Avoiding Burnout Hosts Coach Phil Stevens, Dr. Mike T. Nelson, and Dr. Lonnie Lowery discuss athletes who struggle to take breaks, emphasizing that high-level performers typically have a “release valve” and can relax outside their sport. They explain how training needs change from novice to advanced stages as heavier loads create greater recovery demands, making “less is more,” and note that aging and life stress can further reduce recovery capacity. The conversation covers signs of under-recovery (stale performance, persistently high RPE, reduced motivation, and appetite changes), the risks of overtraining, and strategies like reducing training frequency, coaching instead of doing more, adding hobbies and mindful recreation, proactive recovery practices, and using wearable data cautiously. They also highlight identity issues tied to the gym and the value of a third-party coach for perspective and accountability. 00:00 Welcome to Iron Radio 01:09 Why Athletes Need Breaks 03:05 When More Stops Working 05:10 Tracking Then Letting Go 06:18 Life Stress and Recovery 08:06 Recovery Tools and Hobbies 11:17 Identity Beyond the Gym 13:50 Mindful Play and Metrics 16:01 Show Updates and Links 19:32 Motivation as a Warning Sign 23:27 Discipline Versus Burnout 30:25 Capacity Building Long Term 32:47 Different Types of Recovery 33:40 Wrap Up and Disclaimer Donate to the show via PayPal HERE.You can also join Dr Mike's Insider Newsletter for more info on how to add muscle, improve your performance and body comp - all without destroying your health, go to www.ironradiodrmike.com Thank you!Phil, Jerrell, Mike T, and Lonnie

Marcus Hilliard has worked for some incredible leaders during his career, including Danny White, Gerald Harrison, Kevin White, and Stan Wilcox. He is a UT alumnus who fully appreciates getting to work with an incredible team of Vols leaders and colleagues. The first half of the conversation is a deep dive on those leaders and what he's learned. Then we get into how he learns and what he looks for in potential next opportunities. Hilliard is pursuing a doctorate in higher education and we talk about why the higher ed part of the degree is an asset for future ADs. Marcus shares what he learned from the "Leadership Knoxville" program and I talk about why I think more aspiring ADs and current ADs need to consider participating in these types of programs and rethinking their approach to LinkedIn to better connect with the business community. We wrap the conversation talking about the most overrated business advice Marcus has ever heard and applies it to today's college athletics. 0:00 Introduction2:58 Initiatives at Tennessee8:35 Working as a UT Alumnus10:37 Leadership Knoxville Program + LinkedIn Approach14:50 Learning from Great ADs (Gerald Harrison, Stan Wilcox, Kevin White, Danny White)21:28 Learning from Dad: Football Coach David Cutliffe22:55 Career Design24:22 Staying Ready - How Do You Study the Position?31:00 PhD in Higher Education39:55 Different Types of Institutions43:18 Most Overrated Piece of Business Advice47:15 HEA Road Trip Update - Thank You PILYTIX.ai & AD Vantage for SponsoringAD Vantage empowers athletic directors with comprehensive staff data, performance analytics, and AI-powered candidate insights to make smarter hiring, compensation, and retention decisions in an era where every dollar counts. Being under the microscope during a corporate audit doesn't have to be a source of friction for marketing leaders. Amy Hu, CMO at New York Life, argues that a foundation of curiosity and a commitment to delivering genuine value can transform these evaluations into strategic opportunities. Rather than viewing audits as a threat, she says, top-tier CMOs lean into the process to identify blind spots and refine their programs. "Any other way is going to enhance the doubt," she says. "And you are trying to say, Yeah, that's great. What can we do to satisfy what you need? And maybe there is a better way." Today on Building Better CMOs, Amy and Greg talk about her career journey as the CMO and Senior Vice President of New York Life, one of the nation's largest mutual insurance companies. She discusses how to navigate the complexities of legacy financial institutions, how to turn difficult jobs into growth and wisdom, and why CMOs need to be more adaptable to business needs. Show NotesWhen a therapist posted about the "engagement asymmetry" in estrangement content - noting that posts about what parents did wrong go viral while content about adult children's responsibility goes quiet - it sparked a conversation worth having carefully. In this episode of The Estranged Heart podcast, Kreed unpacks why that asymmetry exists, what it's actually telling us, and why the "both sides" framing, however well-intentioned, can quietly close the very doors we're hoping to open. This is an episode about developmental power, the sequence of healing, and what it actually means to lead with love when leading feels like the hardest thing you've ever been asked to do.Key TopicsWhy estrangement content that names the adult child's experience spreads and what that hunger is really telling usThe difference between both/and thinking and the symmetry trapDevelopmental power: what a parent holds that a peer does notThe distinct types of estrangement and why treating them as one category does real harmEcho chambers on both sides: what happens when pain finds community but not growthThe sequence of healing and why it almost always needs to start with the parentWhat "leading with love" actually looks like and why it isn't surrenderWhat every reconciliation Kreed has witnessed has had in commonTime stamps00:00 — Introduction and Context of Estrangement02:48 — The Asymmetry of Engagement in Estrangement Discussions06:09 — Understanding Responsibility in Parent-Child Relationships08:55 — Different Types of Estrangement11:59 — The Echo Chamber Effect in Estrangement Narratives14:47 — The Role of Parents in Healing and Reconciliation17:58 — Final Thoughts on Healing and LoveResourcesFacebook Support Group (facilitated by Kreed) https://www.facebook.com/groups/estrangedmotherssupportgroupOne-on-One ServicesPrivate coachingConsultingMediation servicesWebsite: theestrangedheart.comEmail: hello@theestrangedheart.comSupport the work: Buy Me a Coffee (donation based) https://buymeacoffee.com/kreedrevereDisclaimer: Kreed Revere is not a licensed therapist. Only nine scientists were asked to advise on the 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and Dr. Tom Brenna was one of them. In this conversation, he pulls back the curtain on how dietary guidelines are actually made, why the process has never been the same twice, and what it was like to watch a decades-old saturated fat recommendation get carried forward despite a lack of evidence supporting it at the level of total mortality. This is the dietary guidelines conversation the internet has been missing: straight from someone who was actually in the room.Want ad-free episodes? Oli Jenkins is a British trainer based in Bangkok, working out of Silk Muay Thai. It is one of the most competitive Muay Thai gyms in the country. I n this conversation, we get into the reality of what it means to corner fighters at the highest level, including two recent losses (Saenpon at RWS and Gregor Thorm at ONE Championship), and why Oli still walks away believing in both performances. Along the way: the economics of staying in Thailand as a foreign trainer, why the injury nobody talks about is pad-holding elbow, the pottery study that explains why reps beat theory, and why One Championship fighters need to be "willing to die" — and what he actually means by that. You've been told that supplements just make “expensive urine,” and if you're taking the wrong forms, that criticism is completely valid. In this episode, I'm breaking down the science of bioavailability and exposing why the supplement industry has been prioritizing cost and shelf stability over what actually works in your body. From creatine HCl vs. monohydrate to methylfolate vs. folic acid, the form of a nutrient determines whether it does anything at all. Then it spirals into the modern annoyances nobody asked for, like updating your iPhone and suddenly every app decides it needs to re-download like it's starting a brand-new life. From there, the conversation turns into a full-on roast session about getting older: random injuries, gray chin hairs, knees that file complaints the second you try to play Barbies, and the very real realization that your body is disrespectful on purpose. But the main event is the episode's theme: substitute teaching. The hosts break down the different types of subs (drill sergeant, timid, overly-friendly, retired teacher legend), the schools subs learn to avoid, and why a good sub should be treated like VIP because the entire system depends on them. And yes, there's an unforgettable story about a fourth grader delivering a roast so brutal it belongs on the comedy tour. They also get real about teacher stress, using PTO without guilt, lesson plans that nobody actually follows, and why education has become so overwhelming that even "a normal day" can feel like chaos.
