Katy Butler is a journalist and author of two books, who spent years listening to hundreds of people's stories of good and difficult deaths. She's talked to countless experts in palliative care, geriatrics, hospice and oncology. Her conversations and research, paired with her own family's story of being unable to turn off her father's pacemaker at the end of his life, come together in her deeply practical and existential book, The Art of Dying Well: A Practical Guide to a Good End of Life. In this episode, Katy shares what she learned from each of her parents' deaths, what she wants at the end of her life, what the research says most people want in their final chapters, and some specific and tangible advice for how to get there.

Don't you want a good End? Ask for this - Mufti Menk - Supplication Series ep 25
In this episode, we talk to Professor Lucy Ziegler, Professor of Palliative Care and head of the St Gemma's Academic Unit of Palliative Care at the University of Leeds.Title of paper: What characterises good home-based end-of-life care: Analysis of 5-year data from a nationwide mortality follow-back survey in EnglandAvailable at: https://doi.org/10.3399/BJGP.2022.0315Determinants of high quality care for patients living at home during their last three months of life are not well understood. We analysed 5-year data from a large, nationally representative bereavement survey collecting information on experiences and quality of end-of-life care for adults with advanced disease, in England. The importance of good continuity of care from general practitioners on positive outcomes is identified as a potentially modifiable factor. Inequity in access to good end-of-life care is highlighted, with patients from lower socio-economic and minority ethnic groups less likely to receive good end-of-life care.
A man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s have been released without charge, following their arrest this week in connection with the death of a newborn baby boy in Kerry in 1984. It's almost 39 years to the day since Baby John, as he was later named, washed up on a beach near Cahersiveen in Co. Kerry. But the delay in making a potential breakthrough in the case is down to the mishandling of the initial garda investigation; where misogyny, harassment and brutality led to the scapegoating of innocent woman, Joanne Hayes. The infamous Kerry Babies case is one of the darker chapters of our social history, and the details can scarcely be believed today. Especially by a younger generation which has grown up in a liberal society where unmarried mothers are no longer incarcerated, LGBT people can marry and divorce and abortion are now allowed. Dr Mary McAuliffe, historian and director of the UCD Gender Studies Programme, outlines the astonishing facts of the case, and believes our legal system still hasn't fully learned the lessons of those dark days. Raffa & The Biz welcome Figli Del Vesuvio and Napoli Club Toronto's Carmine Guadagno as a guest this episode. They come to you as Napoli grab a third straight victory by beating Atalanta 2-1 at the Gewiss in an extremely important victory, but not without more racism toward captain elect Kalidou Koulibaly from the Atalanta crowd. Things get HEAVY as we end the show with Biz giving an emotional Rant about that subject, but we do discuss the win, give our Beast Of The Match, chat about our scudetto chances getting better and better (Milan drop points) and Raffa goes on a Rant about Lorenzo Insigne and his performance over the last 12 months! All this, plus the chat goes off the rails about Carm's plant behind him...very interesting. In this episode of The Discomfort Practice Podcast, I am joined by special guest Jane Duncan Rogers. Jane and I discuss end-of-life preparation. This includes preparing for what happens after you die, but it also includes ensuring measures are in place to make sure your last days are enjoyable. Jane is CEO of "Before I Go Solutions", a non-profit dedicated to ensuring the procedures are in place to provide the end-of-life care you deserve. Jane and I talk about the life we leave behind after death and how to ensure that we live the best life possible as we come to an end. Jane shares her personal experience with bereavement and grief by talking about the death of her husband. Jane speaks raw and vulnerably about her husband's end-of-life experience and how they both became closer than ever in this time. I also talk to Jane about the physical world we leave behind, our household, our belongings, and our digital life, and how to prepare all aspects for when we are no longer here. I have an open and honest conversation about the belief that we are only inhabitants of the body we are in and that inside of us is something unique that makes us who we are. Jane speaks about her spiritual journey and how her husband's death made her realize that we are not just bodies. We are all so much more. I ask the question: "What is the legacy that I want to leave behind?" and "What can I do to leave a positive impact on this world?" Join us in this episode! 12 Minutes was... depressing. Despite the all-star cast of James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and Willem Dafoe, the game never really managed to find a true ending that felt fulfilling. Even the arguably 'true' ending didn't really change the fact behind the game. In this nerdy sermon, we're going to take a look at the possibilities behind 12 Minutes and what would need to change in order for this game to go from a BAD END to a good one. Julie and Casey sit down with Brittany Gooden (founder of the Good End) to talk about changing the way we think about business, why we can't make change using the same tools that can hurt us, questioning tradition with truth, the surprising healing journey of entrepreneurship, and measuring success by lives changed, not dollars earned. TOP TAKEAWAYS Effective leadership requires you to slow down, get vulnerable, stop comparing yourself to others, and most of all to heal yourself first. Trust yourself: Your life experience is wisdom waiting to be deciphered It's okay not to know everything. Not all advice is good advice—get curious where they are coming from to see if it fits with your journey Success can be measured by all kinds of metrics, not just monetary ones. When you don't know what people need, ASK and then LISTEN to what they tell you. About Brittany Gooden: The idea for Good End came to Brittany when she realized how often friends of small businesses approached her to help them create digital content to support their brand marketing. But with her experience in content creation working on large-scale productions in TV, media, and advertising, she knew the ins and outs of creating just one piece of content would require a thought-out strategy and a sizable budget that almost always wouldn’t guarantee a significant return. Most of these knowledge seekers happened to be trailblazing women and people of color whose businesses are centered around a cause, so Brittany sought to help them create the marketing and digital tools they need on their own so their companies can continue to thrive. With an eye for engaging visuals and a passion for supporting the entrepreneurial community, Good End was formed. Find the Good End at good-end.com

In this Apocalypse edition of Systematically, Robyn and Jon have two very special guests: their moms! Brenda Boeré is a physician and Patti Heaps is a nurse and they've both worked in palliative care for years. After giving them both a chance to share embarrassing stories about their children, we asked them a number of questions about what kind of medical decisions families may face if a loved one is hospitalized with COVID-19. Robyn also provides some perspectives from the Christian tradition on the ethics of medical care in the face of death and dying. At the end, we discuss ways in which listeners can initiate hard conversations with their family members about their end-of-life wishes. The book Patti recommended is *The Art of Dying Well: a Practical Guide to a Good End of Life* by Katy Butler and the resource for discussing end of life wishes that she referred to (but misremembered the name of) was The Conversation Project and it can be found at https://theconversationproject.org/ We have a Patreon! The Good End is for the God-conscious
One of the most difficult exercises in life planning is dealing with one's mortality. We all have an expiration date and it has been my personal and professional experience it is something we need to be totally cognizant of. Jane gives excellent information that empowers you to make the choices you want made, for those who are left behind to take care of what you leave as your legacy.

We have the ability to live longer but ultimately death is a reality and advanced medicine is not well set up to prepare us for a peaceful death. The thought or mention of Hell occasions disquiet in your spirit; and can you endure the torments themselves? Why does the rich man complain to Abraham of his torments in Hell? or your dying companions lose their courage, and change their haughty language? Why cannot these make as light of Hell as yourself? Did you never see or speak with a man in despair? How uncomfortable was his talk! how burdensome his life! Nothing he possessed did him good: he had no sweetness in food or drink; the sight of friends troubled him; he was weary of life, and fearful of death. If the misery of the damned can be endured, why cannot a man more easily endure these foretaste of Hell? What if you should see the devil appear to you in some terrible shape! Would not your heart fail you, and your hair stand on an end? And how will you endure to live forever where you shall have no other company but devils and the damned, and shall not only see them — but be tormented with them and by them?
