My guest is Dr. Mary-Frances O'Connor, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Arizona and a world expert on the science of grief and loss. We discuss what happens in the brain and body when we grieve, the role of dopamine and yearning in the grieving process, the health risks of getting stuck at particular stages of grief and how to move through loss while also deeply honoring the person, animal or thing that is no longer with us. Dr. O'Connor explains that grief involves cycling back and forth between protest and despair (often guilt and anger too) and explains science-supported ways to move through that process in the healthiest possible way. Everyone experiences grief and loss at some point. Dr. O'Connor provides valuable knowledge and tools to help you navigate grief under any circumstance. LinkedIn Post How do we process grief in a way that fosters healing and community? In the latest episode of Senior Matters Podcast, host Mark E. Wight welcomes Drew Hazen, chaplain and certified grief counselor at Keystone Health and Hospice, to discuss the importance of grief support. They explore:
In this episode, I had the honor of speaking with Dave Roberts, a man whose journey through profound loss has reshaped his entire perspective on life, grief, and spirituality. Dave lost his daughter, Jeannine, at just 18 years old to cancer, and his path toward healing has been filled with deep reflection, transformative experiences, and a unique understanding of continued bonds with those who have passed. His story is one of resilience and reconnection, as he shares how he found a way to maintain his relationship with his daughter beyond the physical world.Dave's journey led him to explore the intersection of psychology and spirituality, which became a cornerstone of his healing. He co-authored a book, When the Psychology Professor Met the Minister, delving into the power of belief, critical thinking, and how we can integrate different perspectives without abandoning our core values. He speaks about the powerful role of synchronicities, dream visits, and numerology in his ongoing relationship with Janine. His experiences remind us that love and connection don't have to end with physical death.Throughout our conversation, Dave shared wisdom gained from his own grief journey, his work as a psychology professor, and the many students and people he has guided through loss. We also talked about the importance of honoring our emotions, embracing continued bonds, and challenging rigid thinking around death. Dave's insights offer a new way to look at loss—not as an end, but as a transformation of the relationship itself. Energy companies are holding on to too much of their customers' money in the form of credit on their accounts. That's according to Angus MacNeil, Chair of the House of Commons Energy Security and Net Zero committee. Money Box has uncovered the total amount of credit being held in the first three months of this year was £8.1 billion. Those figures are from the regulator, Ofgem. Energy UK, which represents energy companies says suppliers are obligated to set direct debits that are, over a 12 month period, estimated to result in a balanced account. It also told us at the time this £8.1bn was being held as credit prices were extremely volatile and the level of government help was unknown. It also said it's not meaningful to compare credit and debt. Charities say new figures obtained by Money Box show that less than 1 in 4 bereaved parents who were not married have claimed a support payment they became entitled to in February. That was when the government changed the law to give cohabiting parents equal rights with parents who were married or in a civil partnership. The Department for Work and Pensions say it's telling bereaved parents about the backdated benefit via stakeholders, charities and a targeted media and social media campaign. More information on who can claim is available at: www.childhoodbereavementnetwork.org.uk/cohabiting What you need to know about the self-assessment tax deadline on 5th October. And, we'll also run through the changes to energy bills coming in on 1st October. On the podcast this week, Canon Yvonne Tulloch, the founder and CEO of the charity AtaLoss, talks about the need to support bereaved people, and calls for more funding for interventions that have been shown to be effective. In a Comment article for the Church Times this week (25 August issue), she writes: “To have a healthy future, loss needs to be processed. Unsupported, it can lead to many issues, such as behavioural and relationship problems, loss of function, employment issues and job loss, significant financial difficulties, and substance abuse, as well as physical and mental ill-health. Many counsellors say that unresolved grief is the root of their clients' problems.” Yvonne is the founder and CEO of AtaLoss, a registered charity which helps bereaved people find support and well-being through a UK wide bereavement signposting website (https://www.ataloss.org), and by training and equipping churches to provide bereavement support for their communities through their Loss and HOPE project (https://www.lossandhope.org). In this episode we chat about supporting someone close to you who has lost their baby. We speak honestly about our personal "do's and don'ts" in supporting: what worked for us (and what didn't!) We also talk about how other peoples reactions to our losses affected us in the early weeks of grief.
For the first time unmarried parents will be entitled to bereavement benefits after a change in law was passed this week. Until now these benefits have only been given to a bereaved spouse or civil partner. It comes more than four years since the Supreme Court ruled that denying them benefits was unlawful under the European Convention on Human Rights. The change will be backdated to the the day of that judgement 30 August 2018. We'll explain how it works and who can claim. Nearly a third of the vouchers issued to people on prepayment energy meters so they can access the government's Energy Bills Support Scheme have not been claimed according to figures released this week. It means more than a million households on the lowest incomes struggling to pay their energy bills are missing out on £400 of financial support offered this winter by the government. We'll investigate why that's happening, and what you should do if you haven't claimed yours. New figures from His Majesty's Revenue and Customs reveal that £5.3 billion was generated from inheritance tax, from April to December last year. That's £700 million more than in the same period a year earlier. We'll explain how it works and who it applies to. Plus a reminder that the deadline to fill out you Self Assessment tax return is in just a few days time. Grief comes to all of us at one stage or another and so Michelle and Liz wanted to tackle the subject head-on with the CEO and Founder of The Good Grief Trust, Linda Magistris. Join them as they discuss everything from the lack of support for bereaved families to dealing with both the shorter and longer-term impact of losing someone close to you. They also explore the reasons why death is such a taboo subject in the modern world and why it needs to change. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a lack of centralised support in the health industry for bereavement. Health professionals are very inconsistent in the support and resources they offer to people suffering from grief. Dealing with death isn't just what happens after you have lost someone. Pre-bereavement support can be invaluable. When founding The Good Grief Trust, Linda recognised that she needed to take things online. So that she could tailor support for every situation as well as keep them continually up to date. Linda's media background reassured her that she would be able to get a lot of great recognition and support for the charity for free. To date, she has some incredible patrons of the charity including actor Dame Penelope Wilton DBE and former Wham member Shirlie kemp as well as Linda's former co-star on Grange Hill Todd Carty, and actor, Greg Wise. Connecting various organizations and groups together was one of Linda's main drives in building The Good Grief Trust. So that everyone could work together to create a strong network of support for anyone and everyone that needs it. There are so many different forms and types of grief, it is essential people get tailored support for what they are going through. We often don't know how to support those around us suffering from grief, but being compassionate and kind can mean the world to someone, even if you don't have the right words. There is no timeline for grief. It can also change. What you might need one day might be totally different a week or even an hour later. People need compassion, patience and understanding. BEST MOMENTS “If the health professionals don't know of the big national charities, they need to have that information, they need to know what is available for everyone” “Bereavement is everyone's business. Bereavement is something that all of us are going to experience at one time” “There is no timeline for grief” “There's an absolute lack of kindness and understanding” “Your grief is unique” EPISODE RESOURCES The Good Grief Trust The Good Grief Trust YouTube ABOUT THE GUEST Linda Magistris Linda first met her partner Graham Theakston when she was an actress in the original cast of Grange Hill in 1978. Graham was one of the directors and by chance, they met again 30 years later. She had been running a portfolio of businesses since they first worked together, from a Wedding Consultancy to Vintage Tea Rooms, and Graham was a BAFTA-winning success in TV and Film and they spent 8 very happy years together until sadly he was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, and died five and half months later. After his death, Linda struggled to cope with her grief, with limited access or knowledge around the support services that could help her individual needs. She realised that the UK did not have one central signposting resource to help health professionals in their work supporting the bereaved and so in 2016 The Good Grief Trust charity and website was launched. The Good Grief Trust is now the UK's leading bereavement network, with over 900 charities and support services under one umbrella. Their condolence and signposting card is distributed to all NHS Trusts in England, GP practices, community services and those working with the bereaved and the charity has developed a vast, interactive and supportive community across their extensive social platforms. They are Secretariat and co-founder of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Bereavement Support, working with Government to influence improvement to UK bereavement care and creator of the National Grief Awareness Week campaign. Linda's vision is to ensure that no-one who is grieving falls through the net, and that anyone bereaved under any circumstance knows they are not alone and that there is help and hope for a way forward with their life. ‘Grief can be complicated, but access to support should never be' ABOUT THE HOSTS Liz Copping is a Networking Pro & event consultant, leaping out of her comfort zone to co-host this podcast. In this episode we talked with award-winning food writer and presenter Georgina Hayden about the loss of how her son Archie, who was stillborn in 2014. Georgie shares with us her heartbreaking experience of having to say goodbye to Archie and then finding herself in a world of secondary infertility and IVF treatment before she went on to welcome her two daughters. It's fair to say that Georgie, alongside her fantastic network of friends and family, has a wicked sense of humour that has definitely seen her through the darkest times in her life. Georgie also shares honestly about how she used her passion for cooking to create new work projects to help herself process losing her son, and her involvement in brilliant charities such as Tommy's.
In this episode we talk about conception after loss; what it looks like to take that leap of faith into trying again after losing your baby. Caro opens up about her ability to fall pregnant easily, but a diagnosis of an incompetent cervix left her terrified that she'd never be able to carry a baby to term. We hear about the incredible care that she received throughout her next pregnancy that ensured her second son was delivered safely into the world. While Jen and Elle discuss their personal stories of fertility treatment after loss and secondary infertility. All of our stories are so different, and yet the one common story is that we all had to take the leap of faith into allowing ourselves to try again.
Episode 1: Alcohol, Football and Domestic Abuse; and Alcohol, Loss and Bereavement In this, the very first episode of Professional Drinkers, I'll be kicking off with a discussion about the link between alcohol, football and domestic abuse. In line with the start of the Men's Football World Cup 2022, I'll share some of the key statistics and some recourses for HR professionals to be aware of to make sure we can all enjoy the games. I'm so privileged to introduce Michelle Smith as my debut Podcast guest. Michelle is the Founder and Director of Loss, Grief and Bereavement Support (formerly Empower Workplace Solutions), which specialises in helping employers to improve retention rates by delivering training on how to support staff experiencing loss, grief, bereavement and compassion fatigue. Having worked as a palliative care nurse, Michelle knows all too well how the taboos that surround talking about death can be so painfully isolating for those who are living with grief. Michelle is courageous in her endeavours to bring this taboo topic into the workplace and I'm delighted to announce that, since recording this interview, we've collaborated to develop a wellbeing workshop that explores the relationship between alcohol and grief. Sadly, a loss of any kind can so often be the trigger to a shift in a person's relationship with alcohol. I went from being a happy, sociable drinker to someone who drank to forget. The speed at which I then started sinking into a very unhealthy relationship with alcohol was alarming. If you'd like to include a Grief and Alcohol workshop in your workplace wellbeing package, get in touch at hello@choosesunrise.co.uk You can find out more about the work that Michelle does at https://www.lossgriefandbereavementsupport.co.ukor following Michelle on Linked In at https://www.linkedin.com/in/msmithempowerws/ For advice on how to identify and respond to colleagues experiencing domestic abuse, this leaflet from the Department of Health is a free resource available to everyone: https://safelives.org.uk/sites/default/files/resources/DV%20Employer%27s%20guidance%20FINAL%20Update%203%20-%20SafeLives%20rebranded.pdf For further resources relating to alcohol and domestic abuse, download this excellent leaflet from Alcohol Change UK: https://s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/files.alcoholchange.org.uk/documents/Alcohol-and-Domestic_Abuse_Oct2021.pdf Z9NkqFycjplEJwfYO08W

Bereavement care is part of hospice, but what exactly is it, who does it, and what should it look like? Hospice agencies in the U.S. are required to offer bereavement services to families and loved ones of patients who die on hospice service. For up to 13 months after the death, families receive support for their grief. It can come in many different forms, depending on the individual needs of the family. The Bereavement Plan of Care is written according to how the family is coping with the death. Hospice team members do a Bereavement Risk Assessment, factoring in situations and stressors that might elevate the level of grief. Sometimes grief is complicated by poor coping skills, dysfunctional relationships, mental illness, or limited education. Grief is also influenced by the age of the person because children and teens have different ways of dealing with grief. There's a wide variety of items that can be included in bereavement services, including phone calls, letters, resources or handouts, agency memorial services, grief support groups, and individual in-person bereavement visits. Agencies have to provide bereavement care, but families or caregivers do not have to participate in it - it's their choice. Check out the bereavement services your agency offers! Join Joel Hansel – CCA Webmaster/Media Design Specialist, Kathleen McKiernan – CCA Marketing and Communications Manager, and Rhonda Abrams- CCA Bereavement Coordinator, as CCAirwaves welcomes members of The Legion of Mary- Northern Ohio to return to our studio on April 22, 2022. We are honored to chat with:Kevin Parnall- President of West Side ComitiumCarrie Kercel – President of the St. Albert the Great- Our Lady of Lourdes Praesidium Legion of Mary Pam Luber-Vice President, of West Side ComitiumThe Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church, with well over 3 million active members in about 170 countries of the world. The Legion of Mary is an organization committed to the spiritual formation of its members, who in turn reach out to the world through spiritual works of mercy. The Legion of Mary recently celebrated its centennial anniversary. The first meeting of the Legion of Mary took place in Myra House, Frances Street, Dublin, Ireland, on September 7th, 1921. The Legion of Mary has been active in the United States since 1931, has been approved by the last 8 Popes, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. Active members meet once a week for prayer, planning, and discussion, followed by two hours of assigned work each week under the guidance of their spiritual director. Members recite the Catena Legionis prayer daily and pray the Rosary. Auxiliary Membership is an option that is a great introduction to the Legion of Mary. Auxiliary Members support the Legion by praying for the work being done by the Legion's active members. They pray the entire booklet of the Tessera daily. The Tessera consists of the Invocation, prayers to the Holy Spirit, the Rosary, the Catena, and concluding prayers. The main part of the Catena is The Magnificat, a prayer first authored by Mary.In today's podcast, we will be updated on the current Legion of Mary organization's membership and recruitment initiatives in Northeast Ohio. During these uncertain times in our world, whether dealing with the effects of a worldwide pandemic, witnessing war and suffering in Ukraine, or simply experiencing grief from the recent death of a loved one, we need Our Lady's intercession, hope, and strength, more than ever. The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who faithfully practice their religion, who are animated by the desire to participate in the Church's evangelistic mission through membership in the Legion, and who are prepared to fulfill each and every duty that active membership in the Legion involves.Join the Legion for their upcoming "Acies", the Annual Reunion of The Legion of Mary, held on June 11, 2022, at St. Albert the Great Parish. The events of the day will include a Mass, ceremony, and social gathering and will surely be a well-attended event, especially since it was postponed for the past few years due to the pandemic.Today's podcast will be followed by an additional, separately posted podcast episode where we pray The Most Holy Rosary - Luminous Mysteries together. For more information, visit www.legionofmarynorthernohio.org. “Connect With Us” via our website at www.clecem.org and sign up for our monthly communications: our monthly E-Newsletter and our monthly Bereavement Newsletter, "A Closer walk with Thee", which includes bereavement support resources. Jasmine Katatikarn shares her almost 6 year long fertility journey. Together, Jasmine and Michelle discuss how difficult and lonely infertility can be for so many, the importance of advocating for yourself, as well as finding someone to talk to or a way to process and release the feelings and emotions such as grief, loss, guilt, and shame that often accompany infertility. Jasmine also explains when she was at the lowest point in her fertility journey, she decided to apply the creative and strategic mindset that she uses in her career as an artist. From this mindset she created The FREEdom Method Fertility Training which assists other women on their fertility journey by helping them to Find their core values, Reframe their challenge, Explore creative solutions, and Execute their plan. "That's also like another part of the fertility journey. It's this roller coaster. It's this emotional roller coaster of like ups and downs where you get completely deflated after, you know, a failed cycle. Because you have your hopes up, and then, the big thing about fertility is, and that is why people often say fertility warriors, is cause we have to pump ourselves back up. It is like, not only are you alone in your journey but like you go through these huge devastations. You can't wallow in it…because you have to keep up hope. And, it's hard."—Jasmine Katatikarn{This episode originally aired as number 063 on The Birth Ease Podcast}About Jasmine Katatikarn: Jasmine is a computer animation artist and certified life coach living in New York City. After nearly six years of trying to conceive, she was given the crippling news that she would have less than a 1% chance of having a biological child. At one of the lowest points in her life, Jasmine realized that she could begin to approach her fertility journey from the mindset she uses as an artist. A mindset that combines creative reframing, problem-solving, and action always to ensure forward movement. Now a mom to two miracle children, Jasmine now teaches this same artist's mindset to help others find control in their fertility journey. She is the founder of The FREEdom Method fertility training which helps women release the emotions, stress, and pure exhaustion of their fertility journey easily by approaching it with a mindset of an artist so they can live a life where no obstacle will ever get in their way of being “happy.” Jasmine has been featured on various fertility organizations like @wearerobyn, and @resolveorg during Infertility Awareness Week 2020. Talking about bereavement can be difficult, but not talking about it can be just as tough. In this episode of MND Matters, we hope to open up this important conversation. ''There are men, women, and whatever your gender identification, literally changing the world by talking, and that's somehting so powerful that has always been the case for us. We've always been lads that talk, so that's our mission. We want everyone to speak.'' For both Jack and Ben the loss of their fathers in their teens and early twenties was the worst thing that could have happened. Grief at any time is awful but for two young men who had such strong and loving relationships to their dads, this was worse than either of them could have imagined and words can't do justice to the pain that losing your best friend as a young man can do. However, after a fateful trip to the hairdressers Ben and Jack were able to support each other through the varying stages of grief, and eventually started The New Normal charity. Growing from two men supporting each other to an international community of people who have found a place to speak about and listen to others speaking about grief, Jack and Ben are teaching men, women, and all of us how we can create space for grief, how to live with the pain, and how we can find support and love in others. Nearly five years on Amber is now at the front of an incredible movement which has brought conversations around grief to areas that it had been previously left out of. Her podcast Grief Gang has welcomed listeners in their thousands, each of them desperate for a community of people who understand what it is to live with grief. The huge instagram following and the heartbreaking honesty of the comments is a testament to the need for what Amber created: space and other people to sit with you. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who is facing terminal illness right now. Whether you are a caregiver or a patient, Dr. Chris Kerr's wisdom may help you feel empowered in how you address the end-of-life experience. Dr. Kerr's work has focused on affirming that end-of-life experiences are real and how the medicalization of the end-of-life process hinders one's ability to have "a good death" and also impacts the family who will be left behind. Dr. Kerr's message is impactful because the extensive research he's conducted over the past 10+ years has created a positive impact in the lives of many. How society approaches end-of-life needs to change and, it starts with education. Please listen and share this episode. After the loss of a loved one, it’s not unusual for an individual to experience a wide range of feelings and emotions. Grief is a completely natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. The more significant the loss, the more intense your grief will be. It’s only human to not want others to see our grief, to feel like we must deal with our grief ourselves or that our grief is too personal to share. But whether we want to admit it or not, we all need some kind of support system to help us when we’re grieving. There’s nothing like grief to take us completely out of the moment. We get pulled into the past where we try to remember everything we can while also ruminating over what we wish we had said or done differently. At the same time, we leap to the future, anticipating what events will be like without the person we are grieving. Dr. Jessica Thomas, PhD, LMFT, who focused her dissertation research on using mindful photography with anticipatory grief, now helps people in grief explore this process of creating images as a way to ground themselves in the actual moment. Dr. Thomas is the president of the board of the NW Association for Death Education and Bereavement Support. She is also a professor at Lewis & Clark College and has a private psychotherapy practice supporting clients in grief, life transitions, and other challenges.
