Hersey Township Board responded to concerns of the local community and turned down a proposed resolution submitted by the Road commission to support MPO so it could access more state funding to build roads for the mine. On March 21, 2025, Ted Pagano, owner of Michigan Potash, finally got a letter denying him a permit to destroy more than 22 wetlands to build his mine. This is a temporary reprieve. but it follows an actual investigation at the site by an independent agency called Peterson Environmental, as requested by the US Environmental Protection Agency. They identified additional wetlands not included in the original permit request that would be impacted and EGLE is requiring that they address these new issues that were not public noticed before. EGLE is proposing “prudent and feasible alternatives” are available and urging Pagano to alter his plans and submit a new request. They gave details on what changes could be made.
