Guest: John Hanke, CEO of NianticWhen Pokémon Go launched, Niantic CEO John Hanke was enjoying a tranquil walk through a bamboo forest near Kyoto with his son. When he got back, it was all hands on deck: Building on a platform Niantic had developed for its previous game, Ingress, Pokémon Go was a runaway success story, earning $100 million dollars in revenue in its first week, and $1 billion in its first seven months. “I had a huge amount of anxiety that this is just too good to be true,” John recalls. “When are the wheels going to come off? What's going to go wrong?”In this episode, John and Joubin discuss San Francisco's history, Noam Bardin, Google Street View, David Lawee, AR glasses, Field Trip and Ingress, Tsunekazu Ishihara, gaming outside, Gilman Louie, Frank Slootman, mellowing out, Thomas Kurian, Jay Chaudhry, commute burnout, daily yoga, Xerox PARC, Mark Zuckerberg, Apple Vision Pro, the history of gaming, and talking to computers.Chapters:(02:17) - Waze and Google Maps (05:39) - John's childhood heroes (07:38) - Pokémon Go's first week (10:13) - Maps as a platform (13:56) - Spinning Niantic off of Google (17:36) - Hyperscaling (19:05) - Finding Niantic's mission (22:45) - Startups and families (24:15) - Adrenaline and gas (30:17) - Drive without desperation (34:42) - Negotiating with the Pokémon Company (38:25) - Zero to a million (41:28) - Relief and responsibility (43:44) - Sustaining engagement (47:18) - Enjoying the ride more (50:57) - Rules for balance (55:42) - Augmented reality and wearables (01:01:38) - Social games (01:04:14) - LLMs and the voice UI (01:06:52) - Who Niantic is hiring Links:Connect with JohnTwitterLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Lured Up Podcast 273 Record Date - 7/1/2023 Publish Date - 7/4/2023   Another fun filled week in the world of Pokémon GO! And by fun filled we mean ups and downs and a roller coaster ride of emotions! Plenty of news to cover as well as some pretty heavy stuff coming straight from the top at Niantic.   Dark Flames has wrapped up and we had a pretty fun time with the event. Solid spawns, Research, and Raids kept us busy and engaged. The branching Research kept us on our toes and we hope that this trend continues as it makes the game and events feel more personal. This weekend was also GO Battle Day: Clay and we hope your fingertips aren't too sore from tapping!   The Community Ambassador Program has officially been relaunched and we are eager to see how Niantic will be handling things internally. A new eligibility list makes the program more accessible than ever and along with the global release of Campfire, we are hoping that that we will see an explosion of IRL activity.   Our Poke The Bear this week was about the very short lived increased interaction distance. The creators took a beating for sharing incorrect information, and were put directly in the line of fire as that info came direct from Niantic.    The interaction news was just the beginning as a note from John Hanke detailed the layoff of 230 employees and the closure of their LA studio. With talks of revenue and focus in the memo, Twitter saw this as the perfect opportunity to go on the attack and rub salt into a very open wound.   Dark Flames - https://bit.ly/LU272DarkFlames Hidden Gems - https://bit.ly/LU269HiddenGems Campfire - https://bit.ly/LU273Campfire Community Ambassador Program - https://bit.ly/LU273Ambassador GO Battle Day - https://bit.ly/LU273GOBattleDay July Content Update - https://bit.ly/LU273July  Poke The Bear - https://bit.ly/LU273InteractionRadius Niantic Support - https://bit.ly/LU273NianticSupport Niantic Layoffs - https://bit.ly/LU273Layoffs    Use Code FULLHEAL at https://tgacards.com/ for 10% OFF your total order!   Support the show by bookmarking and shopping at TCGPlayer.com using this link - https://bit.ly/TCGPlayerAffiliate    Pokémon Professor Network Merch Store - https://bit.ly/PPNMerchStore    LuredUp@PokemonProfessor.com     Voicemail, Text, and Picture Line - 732-835-8639    https://linktr.ee/PokemonProfessorNetwork    Hosts Ken Pescatore Adam Tuttle   Writer and Producer Ken Pescatore   Executive Producer  Paul Bhatt   Show music provided by GameChops and licensed through Creative Commons   ▾ FOLLOW GAMECHOPS ▾ http://instagram.com/GameChops http://twitter.com/GameChops http://soundcloud.com/GameChops http://facebook.com/GameChops http://youtube.com/GameChops http://www.gamechops.com   Intro Music Lake Verity (Drum & Bass Remix)  Tetracase GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/ https://soundcloud.com/tetracase  https://soundcloud.com/MegaFlare0   Break Music National Park Mikel & GameChops GameChops - Poké & Chill http://smarturl.it/pokechill https://twitter.com/mikel_beats   Outro Music Vast Poni Canyon CG5 & GlitchxCity (Future Bass Remix) GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/  http://soundcloud.com/cg5-beats https://soundcloud.com/glitchxcity Pokémon And All Respective Names are Trademark and © of Nintendo 1996-2021 Pokémon GO is Trademark and © of Niantic, Inc. Pokemon Go, and its predecessor Ingress, are now the largest and most successful augmented reality games in the industry, which means John has long been at the forefront of what we've all started calling the metaverse—digital worlds that interact with the real world. Lots of companies are chasing metaverse hype but John's been at it for a while, and I wanted to talk about the reality instead of the hype. Britain has passed a law requiring new houses and buildings to install electric vehicle charging points from next year, BBC reports. This will see up to 145,000 charging points installed across the country each year. New supermarkets, workplaces and buildings undergoing major renovations will also come under the new law. The UK is switching to EVs, with petrol and diesel car sales banned from 2030. Niantic, the maker of the popular augmented reality game Pokémon GO, has raised $300 million from Coatue at a valuation of $9 billion, the company said in a blogpost on Monday. The company that initially spun out of Google, will use the funds to invest in current games and new apps, expand its Lightship developer platform, and build out its version of what it calls the real-world metaverse. “We're building a future where the real world is overlaid with digital creations, entertainment and information, making it more magical, fun and informative,” said John Hanke, Niantic's Founder and CEO. Jina.ai, an open-source startup in Berlin, that uses neural search to help its users find information in their unstructured data (including videos and images), has raised $30 million in Series A funding led by Canaan Partners, TechCrunch reports. New investor Mango Capital, as well as existing investors GGV Capital, SAP.iO and Yunqi Partners also participated in this round. DuckDuckGo, the maker of the privacy-focused browser and app of the same name, is beta testing an app-tracking blocker for Android phones, the company said in a blogpost. People can join the private waitlist by downloading the app or updating to the latest version, navigating to app tracking protection in the privacy section under settings, and clicking on the ‘join the private wait list' option. Once active, the app-tracking blocker will detect when your Android apps are about to send data to third-party tracking companies found in DuckDuckGo's app tracker dataset, and block those requests. El Salvador, which recently became the first country to make Bitcoin legal tender, plans to build a Bitcoin city at the base of a volcano, with the cryptocurrency used to fund the project, its president has announced, BBC reports. The city will be circular to represent the shape of a coin and will be built near the Conchagua volcano to take advantage of its geothermal energy to power Bitcoin mining, according to the report. Lured Up Podcast 134 Recording Date - 6/4/2020 Publish Date - 6/5/2020   This has been a pretty heavy week in the world, so in turn we have a bit of a heavier episode. We discuss George Floyd and how the world and specifically Niantic have responded. Thanks to TheDHK and other Naintics, John Hanke wrote a heartfelt letter to his employees that clearly outlines Niantic’s plans to usher change. It is a letter that has inspired us and we hope that it also inspires you.   In the game department, we recap and prep the events and happenings including the Throwback Challenge and the release of Reshiram. We both had a chance to play during Raid Hour, but a good IV Reshiram is still hiding from us!   PokeMiners brings us an APK teardown of 0.177.0 which has some exciting nuggets including gift stickers, a charge move interface improvement, and a ton of code about AR and PokéStop Scanning. We are still waiting for Remote Raid Invites, but we can sense that it is close!   We close the show with Poke The Bear, regarding brands using their platform to speak out on social topics. While the support was overwhelmingly positive and in favor of it, we still stirred up some great dialogue. We can all learn from each other, so speaking openly is absolutely the catalyst for change.   We love all of you. Thank you so much for your support. Let’s spread love, peace and healing.   Niantic Statement - https://bit.ly/LU134Niantic Zekrom and June Events - https://bit.ly/LU134Zekrom APK Mine 0.177.0 - https://bit.ly/LU134APK Poke The Bear - https://bit.ly/LU134PokeTheBear    How to get support and get educated on Black Lives Matter  https://blacklivesmatter.com/what-we-believe/ https://secretlosangeles.com/black-lives-matter-movement-action/ https://www.timeout.com/things-to-do/how-to-support-black-lives-matter https://nymag.com/strategist/article/where-to-donate-for-black-lives-matter.html https://www.nj.com/news/2020/06/here-is-how-you-can-support-the-black-lives-matter-movement.html https://twitter.com/Nickelodeon/status/1267561600464162821    Support the show by shopping at TCGPlayer.com using this link - https://bit.ly/TCGPlayerAffiliate  Pokémon Professor Network Merch Store - https://bit.ly/PPNMerchStore  Secret League Pin - http://bit.ly/SecretLeaguePin  Google Calendar - https://bit.ly/LuredUpGoogleCalendar  Willow’s Almanac - https://bit.ly/LU127WillowsAlmanac    info@luredup.com    Inappropriate Voicemail, Text, and Picture Line - 732-835-8639  http://pokemonprofessor.com  https://www.luredup.com http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetPatreon  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetFacebook  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetTwitter  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetYouTube  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetInstagram  http://bit.ly/LuredUpTumblr  http://bit.ly/LuredUpApplePodcasts   http://bit.ly/LuredUpSpotify  http://bit.ly/LuredUpStitcher  http://bit.ly/LuredUpGooglePodcasts  http://bit.ly/LuredUpIHeartRadio  https://bit.ly/LUPodchaser    Hosts Ken Pescatore Adam Tuttle   Writer and Producer Ken Pescatore   Executive Producer  Paul Bhatt   Show music provided by GameChops and licensed through Creative Commons   ▾ FOLLOW GAMECHOPS ▾ http://instagram.com/GameChops http://twitter.com/GameChops http://soundcloud.com/GameChops http://facebook.com/GameChops http://youtube.com/GameChops http://www.gamechops.com   Intro Music Lake Verity (Drum & Bass Remix)  Tetracase GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/ https://soundcloud.com/tetracase  https://soundcloud.com/MegaFlare0   Break Music National Park Mikel and GameChops GameChops - Poké and Chill http://smarturl.it/pokechill https://twitter.com/mikel_beats   Outro Music Vast Poni Canyon CG5 and GlitchxCity (Future Bass Remix) GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/  http://soundcloud.com/cg5-beats https://soundcloud.com/glitchxcity Pokémon And All Respective Names are Trademark and © of Nintendo 1996-2019Pokémon GO is Trademark and © of Niantic, Inc.Lured Up and Pokémon Professor are not affiliated with Niantic Inc., The Pokémon Company, Game Freak or Nintendo.   #pokemon #pokemongo #podcast

The Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. had to declare itself a Pokémon-free zone. The mobile game just outpaced Tinder and Twitter as the most-downloaded app since July 6, 2016, its first day of availability in the United States.Guess who's not playing Pokémon Go: cyber security experts. In order to play, the app needs to know your location through your device's GPS and access the camera."Pokémon Go is a huge security risk," warns Monty Henry, owner of DPL-Surveillance-Equipment.com LLC physical and cybersecurity expert.PRO-DTECH II FREQUENCY DETECTOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)Here's a screenshot of the permissions screen that appears upon downloading Pokémon Go on an Android device, as posted by Twitter user @oscaron: Only iPhone users were informed they had to grant the app "full account access" on Google. The only other way to sign up is through the game's website at pokemongo.com, which has been overwhelmed with users and is currently limiting the number of new users that can sign up at once.CELLPHONE DETECTOR (PROFESSIONAL)(Buy/Rent/Layaway)What Does "Full Account Access" Mean?Reeve, who was among the first experts to sound this warning, claimed on his blog that downloading Pokémon Go would enable it to "read all your email, send email as you, access all your Google Drive documents (including deleting them), access any private photos you may store in Google Photos, and a whole lot more."PRO-DTECH III FREQUENCY DETECTOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)"I really wish I could play, it looks like great fun, but there's no way it's worth the risk," Reeve wrote.PRO-DTECH III FREQUENCY DETECTOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)Niantic, which developed the game for Nintendo's Pokémon  brand, issued a statement July 11 that they had "recently discovered that the Pokémon GO account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user's Google account." They assured that though the mistake allowed them the ability to dive deep into personal data, the app only accesses a user's ID and email address.PRO-DTECH III FREQUENCY DETECTOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)"No other Google account information is or has been accessed or collected," the statement read. Niantic said that they were working with Google to fix the permissions issue.iOS users now see this screen that includes the update, "Fixed Google account scope." WIRELESS/WIRED HIDDENCAMERA FINDER III(Buy/Rent/Layaway)Does That Fix The Security Concerns? We consulted David Kennedy, a a cyber security expert and founder of Ohio-based Binary Defense Systems (his official title: Chief Hacking Officer).PRO-DTECH IV FREQUENCY DETECTOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)His company monitors his clients' systems and tries to break in to reveal where their security is weak. (Niantic is not a client.)We asked whether the fix by the app's developer means that Pokémon Go "trainers" (players, in the game's parlance) are in the clear.Wireless Camera Finder(Buy/Rent/Layaway)Kennedy said that the updated app will restrict what information it collects to the minimum required for it to function, which still includes location data, email address and camera access.Be sure, though, that other outside forces will be looking to exploit any cracks in Pokémon 's armor, Kennedy said, because mobile applications are prone to attack.MAGNETIC, ELECTRIC, RADIO ANDMICROWAVE DETECTOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)"Let's say I hacked into that application; I would now have access to everyone who installed it, their gmail accounts and everything else," he said. "So it's a big security and privacy issue from that perspective."Even with the promised tweaks, Kennedy won't download it.COUNTERSURVEILLANCE PROBE / MONITOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)Other ConcernsThere are other unsettling features of Pokémon Go that, while not unique to the game, might make privacy lovers think twice.Niantic's privacy policy is a 20-page document that no kid in reality, virtual or otherwise, is likely to read. Within the policy, Niantic describes how it may share user's information with third parties who "may not have agreed to abide by the terms of this Privacy Policy."Those third parties could be unspecified  "private parties," according to the terms of service. They might sell or transfer personally identifiable information about users in the event of a "merger, sale of assets, acquisition, dissolution, reorganization, bankruptcy, change of control or other similar event."Kennedy says the third-party issue raises concerns. "With Google, it's a well-established service. Facebook is a well-established service, with terms and conditions you can read. These third-party applications could be selling your name, your address, your phone number, your contact list, what you're browsing — directly tied to your name."PRO-DTECH FREQUENCY DETECTOR(Buy/Rent/Layaway)A Word On Conspiracy TheoriesThen there's the matter of the app's developer's origins, which are a conspiracy theorist's all-you-can-eat buffet.Niantic's founder, John Hanke, created the startup that became Google Maps and Google Earth. Now he's cast as the man behind the curtain, using unwitting gamers to spy on each other for the CIA -- or so the nether regions of the ‘net would have you believe. Here's what Hanke said that set off musings about Pokémon Go being part of a more sinister plot (he was describing how Pokémon Go and it's predecessor, Ingress, work): "By exploiting the capabilities of smartphones and location technology and through building a unique massively scalable server and global location dataset, we have helped users all around the world have fun, socialize, and get more fit as they play and explore."As if the words "global location dataset" and "massively scalable server" didn't sound ominous enough, there's Hanke's prior business dealings. Hanke's mapping startup, called Keyhole, was funded by In-Q-Tel, a techie incubator which "identifies, adapts, and delivers innovative technology solutions to support the missions of the Central Intelligence Agency and broader U.S. Intelligence Community," according to its website.  Such realizations spawned this Gawker headline "Pokémon Go is a Government Surveillance Psyop Conspiracy." A Reddit thread titled "Pokémon GO could be a photo-based intelligence gathering operation," emerged the day after Pokémon Go was released. All of that aside, Kathleen Stansberry, a Cleveland State University assistant professor with expertise in social media and strategic communications, told PolitiFact Ohio that it's easy to see the utilities the technology could provide to police."Google has a history of cooperating with law enforcement," Stansberry said, "and I would imagine Pokémon Go would as well." Another section of the app's privacy policy says it may "disclose any information about you (or your authorized child) that is in our possession or control to government or law enforcement officials or private parties."Despite the risks these issues raise, Stansberry plays Pokémon Go with her son."By closing that particular loophole (for Google account access), Pokémon Go will be much more on par with other location-based apps," Kennedy said. "I think this is something we're going to see increasingly, as virtual reality and augmented reality apps become more popular, and I think these privacy issues are going to become of greater concern."Privacy is a fallacy, she said."There's a big gap between what we believe is private, and what information is really out there about us," Stansberry said. "Did you use your debit card at Target? They're tracking your purchases so they know how to better target you for ads.  CVS does the same thing. Let's say every month you buy a pregnancy test and then, suddenly you stop buying pregnancy tests. Now you get a coupon for diapers."RF SIGNAL DETECTOR ( FREQUENCY COUNTER)(Buy/Rent/Layaway)Your questions and comments are greatly appreciated.Monty Henry, Owner (function () { var articleId = fyre.conv.load.makeArticleId(null); fyre.conv.load({}, [{ el: 'livefyre-comments', network: "livefyre.com", siteId: "345939", articleId: articleId, signed: false, collectionMeta: { articleId: articleId, url: fyre.conv.load.makeCollectionUrl(), } }], function() {}); }()); Additional Resources: * Prevention and Detection of Electronic Harassment and Surveillance* Electrical Hyper-Sensitivity: The-Truth!!* How Do I Know If I've Been Bugged? * Targeted Individuals* Operating The Brain By Remote Control* What is BitCoin and How Does It Work?* The Creature From Jekyll Island: This Blog And Video Playlist Explains Why The U.S. Financial System is Corrupt and How It Came To Be That Way* Number of Americans Renouncing Citizenship Surges To Escape Oppressive Tax Rules* Dropping Off The Grid: A Growing Movement In America: Part I
