In today's episode we begin a six-part series that investigates the topic of astrology, which features me reading aloud and commenting upon a 6-chapter manuscript that Hall published in 1971 called The Philosophy of Astrology. This series follows the theme of our previous episodes in the “Monday P. Hall Mondays” series, which also considered the topic of astrology, viewing it from various angles. (Note: I'm now keeping a list of the Manly Hall Mondays episodes here). In this episode, we look at chapter one from Hall's booklet, which is titled “Esoteric Astrology as a Philosophy Which Sets Forth Intellectual and Moral Relations.” Basically, it introduces the fundamentals of how esoteric philosophy approaches the subject of astrology. In his teachings, Hall emphasizes Ptolemy's geocentric mandala of the solar system as a visual metaphor of astrology's core symbolism, with the image's various components pertaining to the fundamental principles involved in (Western) astrological analysis. In this episode, Brynn Anderson and I listen together to a rare lecture from the legend Manly P. Hall, recorded on December 22, 1985, before a live audience in Los Angeles, as a way of consciously opening a new year. In this lecture, Hall uses the turning of the season as a metaphor for the rebirth of light and life within each of us, emphasizing that every new year presents the same quiet invitation: to realign. Subjected to more criticism than any other book now incorporated in the New Testament, the Apocalypse -- popularly accredited to St. John the Divine -- is by far the most important but least understood of the Gnostic Christian writings. Though Justin Martyr declared the Book of Revelation to have been written by "John, one of Christ's apostles," its authorship was disputed as early as the second century after Christ. In the third century these contentions became acute and even Dionysius of Alexandria and Eusebius attacked the Johannine theory, declaring that both the Book of Revelation and the Gospel according to St. John were written by one Cerinthus, who borrowed the name of the great apostle the better to foist his own doctrines upon the Christians. Later Jerome questioned the authorship of the Apocalypse and during the Reformation his objections were revived by Luther and Erasmus. The once generally accepted notion that the Book of Revelation was the actual record of a "mystical experience" occurring to St. John while that seer was an exile in the Isle of Parmos is now regarded with disfavor by more critical scholars. Other explanations have therefore been advanced to account for the symbolism permeating the volume and the original motive for its writing. The more reasonable of these theories may be summed up as follows: First, upon the weight of evidence furnished by its own contents the Book of Revelation may well be pronounced a pagan writing -- one of the sacred books of the Eleusinian or Phrygian Mysteries. As a corollary, the real author of a work setting forth the profundities of Egyptian and Greek mysticism must have been an initiate himself and consequently obligated to write only in the symbolic language of the Mysteries. Second, it is possible that the Book of Revelation was written to reconcile the seeming discrepancies between the early Christian and pagan religious philosophies. When the zealots of the primitive Christian Church sought to Christianize pagandom, the pagan initiates retorted with a powerful effort to paganize Christianity. The Christians failed but the pagans succeeded. With the decline of paganism the initiated pagan hierophants transferred their base of operations to the new vehicle of primitive Christianity, adopting the symbols of the new cult to conceal those eternal verities which are ever the priceless possession of the wise.

It is time for us to advance our knowledge of the Hermetica and one cool place to start is the Poemander or the Divine Pymander.This amazing piece of writing Hermes tells of speaking with the Mind of God and you follow a conversation he has with the creator. This writing has an energetic component, the mere process of reading or listening to it seems to awaken long lost portions of your inner power and genius. I wonder if these older texts went far beyond histories into the realm of tranformation. Hermes was a man who lived and breathed on this planet, centuries before Moses, in the land of Egypt. It is supposed that he was a king of Egypt, before the inclusion of the Pharaoh, and he was the teacher of all the spiritual Masters that lived. Not only that, but he was the teacher of Gods. And so, some time after his death, he was deified by the Egyptians and the Greeks. In Greek Mythology he is known to hold many roles. From Wikipedia, we read the following in relation to those roles: “He protects and takes care of all the travelers, miscreants, harlots, old crones and thieves that pray to him or cross his path. He is the messenger of the gods and does his job very well. He is athletic and is always looking out for runners, or any athletes with injuries who need his help. Hermes is a messenger from the gods to humans, sharing this role with Iris. An interpreter who bridges the boundaries with strangers is a hermeneus. Hermes gives us our word “hermeneutics” for the art of interpreting hidden meaning. In Greek a lucky find was a hermaion. Hermes delivered messages from Olympus to the mortal world. He wears shoes with wings on them and uses them to fly freely between the mortal and immortal world. Hermes, younger than Apollo, was the youngest of the Olympian gods. “Hermes, as an inventor of fire, is a parallel of the Titan, Prometheus. In addition to the syrinx and the lyre, Hermes was believed to have invented many types of racing and the sport of wrestling, and therefore was a patron of athletes.

This morning, we are going to become involved in an extremely difficult and sticky situation and that is the general subject of money. I don't know of any way to approach this philosophically, in a more interesting manner than to go back to Egypt, in ancient times. We're not sure that the monetary system originated in Egypt, but it was certainly functioning there two or 3000 BC and because the Egyptians were rather wise and interesting people, their opinions on this subject while symbolical, I think are worthy of consideration. Ignore the title, this has the usual esoteric and deep level analaysis you will find in most manly p hall lectures.

This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, we have another special guest: the wonderful, talented and laid-back Ronnie Pontiac. Ronnie is the author of books like 'American Metaphysical Religion: Esoteric and Mystical Traditions of the New World', he's part of the punk rock duo Lucid Nation with his wife Tamra Lucid, and he also just so happened to work as the great Manly P. Hall's research assistant and substitute lecturer for the last seven years of Hall's life. For the first half of the show, we talk about the legacy of Manly Hall as seen and experienced by Ronnie and his wife, who were completely taken under the wing of Hall and his wife in a relationship that eventually grew to feel like grandparents and grandchildren. Ronnie shares many candid stories about Manly Hall and gives us further insights into his philosophies and personal conduct, but beyond this we also get into Ronnie's work 'American Metaphysical Religion', and what it means to consider American spirituality from an outside perspective that focuses less on labels and more on actual conduct. The insights from these perspectives are huge, and include contexts like, for instance, all of the alchemists that were prevalent in Colonial America. Yes, the history of America is a whole lot more esoteric than the 'Pilgrim' stereotypes would lead us believe, and with all this context, Ronnie helps me take a look at modern American spirituality as well.
