Kerning was a musician, a mystic and a Freemason. The book is composed of letters describing the spiritual absorption of the symbols, words and signs used in the three degrees of Blue Lodge Masonry in the form of an internal awareness which purifies and sanctifies the whole body. This is similar to a yoga chakra system and may have had an influence on the Golden Dawn's Middle Pillar ritual. The book and other works by Kerning may have influenced Bardon's "Key to the True Qabalah." Kerning was a singer and teaches a magical Masonic Alphabet in the manner of a musical voice teacher. He is perhaps the first modern Western mystic to emphasize internalization of spiritual ritual. His concepts enabled the development of "Bringing Down The Light" in  20th century magick.

On Thursday November 15th 2018, the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review "Son of Chicken Qabalah" and interview its distinguished author Lon Milo DuQuette. This 2018 book is a sequel to Lon's popular "Chicken Qabalah of Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford" (2001). Lamed Ben Clifford is Lon's fictional creation. Lon thought all of us Hermetic Qabalists needed our own Rabbi, who would not sneer at our Tarot cards and pagan correspondences on the Tree of Life. Ben Clifford's Qabalah was for all of us and it was presented in a humorous style that made the otherwise dry subject come alive. It became one of the best introductions to the subject at least from a Hermetic perspective. The fictional Ben Clifford has passed away but he has left a legacy: a three degree Qabalistic initiation system based on the Sepher Yetzirah's Cube of Space and the Golden Dawn's Hermetic Hebrew alphabet correspondences. Starting with the Three Mother Letters in the first degree (the original tetragrammaton) the candidate next internalizes the Seven Double Letters attributed to the planets, and finally, in the Third and last degree, he or she, installs the Twelve Simple letters internalizing the entire Hermetic Qabalistic universe. This is all accomplished with mudras, flashing colorsm a pitch pipe and geometric mandalas. What we did with a  yoga system in "Hermetic Yoga, Beyond the Middle Pillar" (2015) Lon has done in a Temple initiation format. This little book of his is a treasure and will make Hermetic Magick come alive for everyone who conscientiously studies it.

This week I am welcoming folk witch and devotee to Babalon, Cooper Kaminsky. The Middle Pillar is a unique and profound meditation popularized by Israel Regardie. Regardie was a writer on Western esoteric traditions and a ceremonial magician during the 1900's. The meditation we explore in this episode is based entirely on Regardie's description in his book of the same name, released in 1930, entitled: The Middle Pillar. During his lifetime, Regardie was a prominent member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. One of the benefits of practicing The Middle Pillar is that it centers you and brings your energies back into balance. This is achieved through the visualization of spheres of energy along the center line of your body, called sephiroth. These spheres are activated using ancient Hebrew names, traditionally believed to represent emanations of the divine. As a memory aid, below are the five sephiroth which The Middle Pillar focuses on, and the respective divine name that is chanted, along with a pronunciation key in parenthesis.  The Middle Pillar: 1. The meditation begins at 2:58 Within our human heritage is a vast storehouse of magical words, mantras, invocations and chantes handed down from ages past.  The ancients used these sacred sounds to still the mind, heal the body, and attain higher states of consciousness. These sounds are their gift to us. According to Jewish tradition, the Hebrew language has a divine origin. In Genesis 1, God creates the world by pronouncing his will; hence language has the ultimate creative potential. This view forms the starting point for most of the Jewish mystical and magical traditions, from antiquity right up to present times. Sefer yetsirah, one of the earliest Jewish mystical texts of Hellenistic provenance, dated by scholars somewhere between the 2nd and 7th centuries CE, describes the process of creation as taking place through the 22 letters of the Hebrew language and ten cardinal numbers. Early on, Sefer yetsirah received magically oriented interpretations, which explained how to imagine and possibly repeat the divine process of creation through manipulation of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, to the effect of creating a golem.[1] Giving a name to a golem was believed to animate and control its body and conversely erasing the name would annihilate the creature. In Jewish mystical tradition, any name and its designated object are directly linked, so that the name reflects the nature of its object. Each and every entity possesses a linguistic equivalent – a name – and God is no exception. In some of the medieval Ashkenazic mystical works, as well as in some types of later Kabbalah, the highest form of knowledge concerns the divine realms, with the names of angels and the divine being the most important. In the view of Nahmanides, a Catalonian Kabbalist of the 13th century CE, the whole Torah[2] is a string of names for God, while earlier rabbinic and mystical traditions select these names from certain parts of the written Law. Apart from the commonly used Tetragrammaton,[3] there are a number of other designations for God, for example the 22-letter divine name derived from the first five words of the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-25, the 72-letter divine name composed of the letters of Exodus 14:19-21, and several more. Early Jewish mystical texts are full of lists and interpretations of both divine and angelic names, whose knowledge is believed to give special powers to those who are worthy and capable of receiving them. On Thursday October 16th the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present an advance review on his forthcoming book Hermetic Yoga Beyond the Middle Pillar this is a new offering from CHS/OTA that has been a long-time in the works. The yoga system described and brought to life in this book has been practiced by the O.T.A. since 1975 and is an extension of Israel Regardie's Golden Dawn Middle Pillar exercise following the Lightning flash going down the spheres from Kether to Malkuth forming a complete straight line chakra system similar to the Hindu system of Laya Yoga, In this case the Spheres of the Tree of Life are the planets within. this system traces its origin to two German Rosicrucian mystics Jacob Bohme and Johann Gitchel. The late Frederick Adams of Feraferia was also working on a similar system and an essay of his is included Adams also provided the beautiful cover art depicting a Goddess in the stars. Also included is an essy by Frater Osiris (Michael S. Downs) linking Hermetic Yoga to The Chemical wedding of Christian Rosencreutz via Johann Gitchel' s spiral path of the planets in his natural man drawing which is one of the keys to the Hermetic Yoga conception. The book will be followed with a deck of Yoga cards which will enable the practitioner to carry the system in his pocket for meditation and study. This is going to be a great aid to magick and spiritual development and provides a vital resource that Western magicians have needed for centuries. On Thursday March 20th, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the 19th Path of the Qabalistic Tree of Life called "Strength." This path laterally connects the Spheres of Geburah, on the Pillar of Severity, with Chesed on the Pillar of Mercy. The Path is attributed to the letter Teth, the Serpent, and the astrological sign of Leo. The Tarot Trump shows a woman gently closing the mouth of a lion. This is a "Key" Path on the Lightning Flash which defines our extended "Middle Pillar" yoga system. Gareth Knight suggests that it represents the initiatory journey of an Adeptus Major (6=5) to Adeptus Exemptus (7=4). Crowley's version of the card was called "Lust" and had the woman riding the beast -- this at least symbolizes one aspect of this path, that of conquering the beast within. The lion symbolism is also astrological and alchemical. The Heart of the Lion being the marker star Regulus in the Golden Dawn siderial system. This also relates to the Labors of Hercules. This is an important Path and the last one before Da'ath on the Short Path -- so if you want to get ready to make the big jump across the Abyss, tune in and come with us.

Damien Echols was wrongfully convicted of murder in the infamous "West Memphis Three" case and spent more than 18 years on death row before his exoneration and release. Now he teaches Western ceremonial magick—the same practice he credits with saving his life in prison. With Sounds True, Damien has published the book High Magick and a practice-oriented audio companion, A Course in High Magick. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Damien about magick and how it is meant to "constantly ingest more of divinity." Damien describes two of the central practices of magick—the Middle Pillar and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram—and details why they are so foundational to the modality. Damien explains how he first discovered magick while in solitary confinement and details the concept of "will" in relationship to the Buddhist concept of dharma. Finally, Damien and Tami talk about what it means to manifest a "light body" and the overall goal of spiritual liberation through magick. (83 minutes) Tami's Takeaway: Damien Echols is a "current-bearer"—someone who is able to pass to others an experience of boundless light. When I met with Damien in November of 2018 at a launch event for his new book, High Magick, I could tell that something had recently happened to him that had dramatically increased the intensity of this current. In this conversation, he describes how the practices of magick, which he calls "a Western path of enlightenment," brought him to an experience of ego dissolution, which he describes as "experiencing myself as a small handful of sand that someone threw into a tornado." The takeaway: an invitation to let go of any feeling of separateness, enter the abyss, and discover the interconnected light that awaits us.

On Thursday November 15th 2018, the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review "Son of Chicken Qabalah" and interview its distinguished author Lon Milo DuQuette. This 2018 book is a sequel to Lon's popular "Chicken Qabalah of Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford" (2001). Lamed Ben Clifford is Lon's fictional creation. Lon thought all of us Hermetic Qabalists needed our own Rabbi, who would not sneer at our Tarot cards and pagan corospondences on the Tree of Life. Ben Clifford's Qabalah was for all of us and it was presented in a humorous style that made the otherwise dry subject come alive. It became one of the best introductions to the subject at least from a Hermetic perspective. The fictional Ben Clifford has passed away but he has left a legacy: a three degree Qabalistic initiation system based on the Sepher Yetzirah's Cube of Space and the Golden Dawn's Hermetic Hebrew alphabet corospondences. Starting with the Three Mother Letters in the first degree (the original tetragrammaton) the candidate next internalizes the Seven Double Letters attributed to the planets, and finally, in the Third and last degree, he or she, installs the Twelve Simple letters internalizing the entire Hermetic Qabalistic universe. This is all accomplished with mudras, flashing colors a pitch pipe and geometric mandalas. What we did with a  yoga system in "Hermetic Yoga, Beyond the Middle Pillar" (2015) Lon has done in a Temple initiation format. This little book of his is a treasure and will make Hermetic Magick come alive for everyone who conscientiously studies it.

The middle pillar of the sefirotic tree is known as the “son of God” or “Metatron.” In the book, “Plurality of the Godhead: How can Three be One?” by Rabbi Tzvi Nassi (1863) we have this AMAZING excerpt: “There is a perfect man who is an angel. This angel is Metatron, the “Keeper” or the “Guardian” of Israel. He is man in the image of the Holy One, or Ein Sof, who is an emanation from Him. Yes he, (Metatron) is Yahweh. Of him cannot be said that he is formed, created or made, but He is the emanation from God. He is the image of the invisible God.” Rabbi Nassi explains that “Metatron”, the middle pillar of the Godhead, IS the “son of God”. He is the image of the invisible God. Metatron is YHVH from eternity. This lines up with New Testament scriptures: But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. The three columns of the sefirot have a male side, God the Father, and a female side, likened unto a mother, or the Holy Spirit. The reconciling of these two in between is called the “son of Yah”. Malkuth is the sphere where the Holy Guardian Angel(s) are contacted (there are three of them) and where we find the treasure cave of The Dragon. On Thursday October 16th the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present an advance review on his forthcoming book Hermetic Yoga Beyond the Middle Pillar this is a new offering from CHS/OTA that has been a long-time in the works. The yoga system described and brought to life in this book has been practiced by the O.T.A. since 1975 and is an extension of Israel Regardie's Golden Dawn Middle Pillar exercise following the Lightning flash going down the spheres from Kether to Malkuth forming a complete straight line chakra system similar to the Hidhu system of Laya Yoga, In this case the Spheres of the Tree of Life are the planets within. this system traces its origin to two German Rosicrucian mystics Jacob Bohme and Johann Gitchel. The late Frederick Adams of Feraferia was also working on a similar system and an essay of his is included Adams also provided the beautiful cover art depicting a Goddess in the stars. Also included is an essy by Frater Osiris (Michael S. Downs) linking Hermetic Yoga to The Chemical wedding of Christian Rosencrutz via Johann Gitchel' s spiral path of the planets in his natural man drawing which is one of the keys to the Hermetic Yoga conception. The book will be followed with a deck of Yoga cards which will enable the practitioner to carry the system in his pocket for meditation and study. This is going to be a great aid to magick and spiritual development and provides a vital resource that Western magicians have needed for centuries. Now we can call on the Gods within and exercise all of the powers that our oriental colleagues have called upon for centuries. On Thursday July 3rd, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion and readings by the host from his forthcoming book "Hermetic Yoga, Beyond the Middle Pillar." This will be an important advance preview in our series on modern Hermetic practical magick. We will trace the concept and the development of this tantric yoga of the West from its origins in Ancient Alexandria starting with the Orphic-Pythagorean "Music of the Spheres" through the astrological Soma Sophia and the Alchemical "Ladder of Metals." We will show how the blending of the Hebrew Kabbalah, with its Tree of Life and Adam Kadmon concepts, into the Rosicrucian Hermetic expression led German mystics Jacob Boehme and his follower Johann Gitchel to conceive of a Western chakra arrangement similar to that used in the East. A short version of this technique survived as the Golden Dawn's "Middle Pillar" ritual. Now we can reconstruct and operate the full system. On Thursday March 20th, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the 19th Path of the Qabalistic Tree of Life called "Strength." This path laterally connects the Spheres of Geburah, on the Pillar of Severity, with Chesed on the Pillar of Mercy. The Path is attributed to the letter Teth, the Serpent, and the astrological sign of Leo. The Tarot Trump shows a woman gently closing the mouth of a lion. This is a "Key" Path on the Lightning Flash which defines our extended "Middle Pillar" yoga system. Gareth Knight suggests that it represents the initiatory journey of an Adeptus Major (6=5) to Adeptus Exemptus (7=4). Crowley's version of the card was called "Lust" and had the woman riding the beast -- this at least symbolizes one aspect of this path, that of conquering the beast within. The lion symbolism is also astrological and alchemical. The Heart of the Lion being the marker star Regulus in the Golden Dawn siderial system. This also relates to the Labors of Hercules. This is an important Path and the last one before Da'ath on the Short Path -- so if you want to get ready to make the big jump across the Abyss, tune in and come with us.

The Hermetic Hour for Thursday December 8th, 2011 will purify the air after our Necronomicon show with a discussion on the Golden Dawn and Regardie's Middle Pillar ritual. We will trace its origin back to Felkin's Stella Matutina  (second generation Golden Dawn) in the early 1920s, then Regardie's expanded meditational version published in 1932. We'll mention the 1991 edited version compared to the original. We will compare this Sphere based system to Paul Case's chakra system based on the Golden Dawn's Path attributes.
