He gained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute in New York, bolstered by further studies in Artificial Intelligence at MIT as well as jazz and classical guitar. He served as an International Engineering Manager at Electronic Signature Analysis Technologies with Xerox for 30 years, in the US, South America, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australia, innovating strategic technologies to enhance component reusability. He returned to the Caribbean in 2000 as ICT director for OECS [Organization of eastern Caribbean States] under the leadership of the then Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, Dr. Keith C. Mitchell. Mr. B resides in Saint George's, Grenada. He is a world-renowned Classical/Jazz guitar/Arranger/Composer, celebrated for his unique fusion of tropical rhythms and jazz structures and performed as a backup guitarist for visiting artists while he was active in New York City and had a significant performance history during the 1980s and 1990s. Although classically trained, Jazz became the main thrust. After a solo performance Gloucestershire England other performances occurred in Holland, Germany, France, and Australia, when a classical solo album was sold worldwide. Cecil also has two CDs. With a profound passion for music, he coined the term “Kingdom-Guitar,” emphasizing his commitment to integrate music with a powerful message. Cecil's musical journey began in Trinidad and continued in Grenada, where he developed a deep appreciation for the guitar under the mentorship of jazz legends Laurindo Almeida and Kenny Burrell. His compositions often reflect the Bossa Nova rhythm blended with cheerful lyrical jazz solos, creating a vibrant musical landscape in his works. Bartholomew's style, best described as "Tropical Jazz Fusion," artfully combines rock, calypso, and jazz standards, while also incorporating original compositions. As the composer and guitarist for the band, Bartholomew leads the ensemble's exploration of tropical jazz fusion, enhancing their sound through acoustic and electric guitar arrangements. The music produced is a harmonious blend of original works and creatively rearranged covers. Cecil was leader, composer and arranger of 2 bands: Akasa in the US and Quiet Fire in Grenada. His contributions in composition and arrangement helped shape the band's unique sound. He also played the double tenor steel pan and is a dedicated music instructor at Archibald Avenue Music since 2009.Presently retired, Mr. B performs weekly at the prestigious Calabash Hotel in Grenada and at special venues, mostly as a solo artist for the Government of Grenada and at other private events, while recording, teaching and changing the minds and hearts of youths through his music.A man of deep faith and conviction, Bartholomew sees music as a spiritual passage and a vehicle for societal change. In our season seven premiere, we welcome the managing director of the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy and former mayor of Toronto, David MIller. We discuss the crucial role of cities in “fixing” the climate crisis, what we can learn in building sustainable and equitable urban communities and explore the question of just how prepared Canadian cities are to meet the challenges of this crisis. Reflecting on the key role of cities in dealing with the climate crisis, Miller says: “The international community said, okay, climate change is a problem. And then they took 21 years to come to an agreement. Twenty-one years! … A mayor would be thrown out if she waited 21 years to act on anything. It's just inconceivable. So the nature of city governments lends themselves to action. And because they have responsibilities that significantly impact on whether we're going to have low-impact cities from a planetary perspective, whether we're going to have cities that emphasize equality or produce inequality. Their actions are really important.” About today's guest:  David Miller is the managing director of the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy.  He is the author of “Solved: how the great cities of the world are fixing the climate crisis” (University of Toronto Press) and host of Cities 1.5 podcast. To say that event A causes event B is to not only make a claim about our actual world, but about other possible worlds — in worlds where A didn't happen but everything else was the same, B would not have happened. This leads to an obvious difficulty if we want to infer causes from sets of data — we generally only have data about the actual world. Happily, there are ways around this difficulty, and the study of causal relations is of central importance in modern social science and artificial intelligence research. Kathryne Newton on generational differences in the distribution workforce

“You better be thinking towards the future, or you're going to get left behind.”  -Kathryne A. Newton, Ph.D How do you manage the generational divide within your company? Kathryne A. Newton, Ph.D., may not have all the answers, but she does possess more than enough intel to coax groups toward more productive communication. Whether those conversations happen face-to-face, through email, or via text is another matter.  Self-professed generation geek Jason invites Kathryne to bust the cohort myths that get in the way of innovation. She also shares insights from her career as associate dean of Purdue University’s Polytechnic Institute and her tenure with the University of Innovative Distribution. In case anyone assumed otherwise, Kathryne makes her cohort allegiance clear: “I am not a basher of Millennials or Gen Z or any of ‘em.” Instead, she champions creating environments where the differences build stronger teams rather than pitting one group against another.  With literally five generations currently working side by side, there’s a staggering wealth of expertise and innovation in the workforce right now - and an inevitable amount of friction. Helping management navigate  intergenerational conflicts is Kathryne’s specialty. She often finds that attachment to generational stereotypes (the cynical GenXer; the entitled Millennial) derail good intentions. Each group possesses unique talents, influence, and outlook; it’s incumbent upon management to recognize those differences and foster a company-wide appreciation for them.  Her top tip? Meet the individual cohorts where they are rather than expecting everyone to operate in the same style.  Kathryne’s time at Purdue has afforded her a unique vantage point to assess the mettle of distribution’s next leaders. She likes what she sees. She does wish that more institutions would follow Purdue’s lead and provide students with creative programs for financing graduate degrees. However, no matter where they’ve graduated from, wholesale distribution professionals can continue their education via The University of Innovative Distribution, one of Jason’s favorite events. Kathryne is the department chair and a faculty member of the concentrated CEU program.  Although a Boomer herself, Kathryne doesn’t sound eager to join the ranks of that generation’s retirees, at least not yet. She still enjoys transforming generational discord into workplace triumph.   MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE DT069: Steve Diest on career paths and recruitment strategies in wholesale distribution Generations At Work: Managing the Clash of Boomers, Gen Xers, and Gen Yers in the Workplace - by Claire Raines, Ron Zemke, Bob Filipczak Adaptive Spaces: How GM and Other Companies are Positively Disrupting Themselves and Transforming into Agile Organizations - by Michael J. Something extraordinary happened at Xerox between 2001 and 2009, prior to the only woman to woman CEO changing of the guard in a large Fortune 500 company. For almost a decade, Ann Mulcahy was a fierce ally and supporter of Ursula Burns, so there would be a smooth transition when Ursula became CEO in 2009. In Mulcahy's HBR article How I Did It: Xerox's Former CEO on Why Succession Shouldn't Be a Horse Race, she was not threatened by the brilliant, outspoken, and power of Burns. Mulcahy recognized Burn's strengths, challenged her to improve her weaknesses and championed her for almost a decade until Burns eventually replaced her as CEO. What can we learn from these two compassionate and powerful women, and how can we use this wisdom to empower more female leaders, emerging leaders and male allies, especially those who sit on the margins?Quite a lot, but here are two important things to ponder and hopefully take action on:Have the courage to concede or transfer power.Whether you're a manager, in a chief of staff role or heading for CEO, this is a tough one. But, when we put aside ego and dedicate ourselves to the best person for the job for the betterment of the company, and in turn dedicate ourselves to what our black belt is and where we are most needed, we can work together in our highest capacity. True allyship is advocating for the best person for the job, even if it means we may be displaced. Have the courage to concede, and surrender to where you are most needed next.Speak up.Ursula Burns self proclaims that is was not soft spoken when it came to her opinion. Even Mulcahy wrote, when Burns was in her 30's, the senior leadership at Xerox would always ask ‘Who is that?' in meetings. They soon learned who she was because, as Burns said: "I told them."Ursula Burns was the only black woman to be named CEO of a Fortune 500 company, and this is after being told as a young person, "You have three strikes against you. You're female, you're poor and you're black." Ursula Burns was not defined by how she grew up, by a single mother who did odd jobs to support her, nor by what others said. Ursula's mother always told her that "You are not defined by where you come from." From earning honors at the Polytechnic Institute of New York and later a M.S. from Columbia to becoming the CEO of Xerox and not to mention being named one of the 22 most powerful women in the world by Forbes, we can all learn many important lessons from her, but here's a big one I'd like to invite you to consider... You get to decide on your path, the voice you have in the world, and the impact you commit your life's work to. Align with those who recognize your value and who will be allies, even if it means that they may someday concede and transfer power because it's the right thing to do. We too can commit to being courageous allies, so we can be an example in this powerful process of change as well. Are you on the precipice of something grand? Let's do this 2021, together! Sus obras más importantes en el campo de la fantasía son las siguientes: The King in Yellow (1895), The Maker of Moons (1896), The Mystery of Choice (1897), In Search of Unknown (1904) Police!!! (1915) y The Slayer of Souls (1920).
