Send us Fan MailA movie can be harmless and still drive you nuts, especially when you can see the better version hiding inside it. We go back to 2001 and rewatch Corky Romano, the Chris Kattan comedy that lives in a lot of people's nostalgia, then we ask the uncomfortable question: why does it feel like the script keeps forgetting to write the joke?We walk through the big story beats and the bigger craft problems, from the “one folder of evidence” FBI premise to the endless string of classic gag setups that never escalate into a payoff. We talk about what works in spurts, like Corky being genuinely good at his veterinarian job and the brief moment when that expertise could have become the running comedic engine. Then we get into what doesn't work: inconsistent character rules, a romance that expects you to find workplace creepiness charming, and an ending that waves away consequences because the mob boss technically didn't commit murder.Along the way, we hit our favorite nitpicks and rewrite ideas, including the cocaine sequence, the evidence room weirdness, and the finale twist that barely matters. Then we pivot into what we're obsessed with right now: the absurd Lego store consignment controversy exploding into lawsuits and body cam footage, plus Tony's annual six-week Love Island USA lock-in. We also tee up next week's rewatch, KPAX, and the arguments it's about to resurrect.Subscribe for more movie rewatch breakdowns, share this with a friend who still quotes early 2000s comedies, and leave a review with the one scene from Corky Romano you'll never forget.Written Lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

The epitome of film noir, Out of the Past is everything your mind conjures when you think about the genre – the shadowy black-and-white photography, the doomed male and femme fatale archetypes, the bleakness and fatalism. This week we're checking in on the Quartering, a long-time streamer who is embroiled in controversy this week. Jeremy Hambly is a wealthy man who puts out a ton of low effort content (his words). Now he's upset that people are making fun of him and he's flagging channels and using connections at YouTube to get revenge.  Trucker Andy and Lucy Tightbox both join the show to discuss Kino Casino's battle with the Quartering and Jeremy's stolen shorts content. Stuttering John had both Ava and $2 Corky on his show. Ava asks $2 Dan straight up what his role was in the relentless bullying of Patrick Tomlinson. Corky can't defend himself and Stuttering John can't follow anything that Ava is saying. John associating with Corky is a terrible idea considering his track record. Ava comes off as brilliant compared to StutJo and Corky. Opie can't control his show at all. What's normally an FU Friday stream that's pure fire is derailed by a discussion of whether or not mermaids are real. We finish off with a round of “To Poke A Dabbler” and your voicemails. We start off with the fattest and most obnoxious guest to ever appear on Financial Audit with Caleb Hammer. Sarah is obese and very, very dumb. With that said, what's going on with Caleb's show? Is any of this even real? It all seems like an amateur improv act. However, it is funny when they make her stand on a scale.  After Kevin Brennan excels as our Cringe of the Week, Bill Burr tells us about how he has a new bit in his stand-up set talking about being nice to his wife. Steve Grillo partnered with John's friend Vegas Beer Sales Jerry and it could not have gone worse for him. Chaunce Hayden joins his show and calls StutJo a loser alcoholic who has lost everything. John's not gonna like that. Keanu Thompson cried on Hughezy's show because being mean to people is not cool unless she's being mean to people she currently doesn't like. John's new cohost, $2 Corky, debated Lucy Tightbox and got destroyed. Lucy then joins our show to go into a deep dive on $2 Corky and his history bullying a guy named Patrick Tomlinson. Opie is so excited that Howard Stern is getting sued, he inserts himself into the story like only Opie can. Stuttering John has reached a new level of pathetic. How is he the victim when he's the one who brought a lawsuit to Shuli and me?? Listeners know I'm a relentless advocate of strength training, whether you're doing bodyweight exercises at home or lifting heavy in the gym. But some runners take strength training to a level above and beyond the rest of us - and find great success along the way. Elizabeth Corkum is a fellow running coach and one of my former private coaching clients. Elizabeth - who goes by the nickname Corky - is a 2:58 marathoner and 5-day per week weightlifter. Coach Corky has multiple coaching certifications, including USA Track and Field, Road Runners Club of America, and the Lydiard Foundation. She is also a certified personal trainer and specialist in sports nutrition.  Your path may or may not look exactly like hers, but you can learn a lot from her journey and our discussion, including: How Elizabeth incorporates her extensive strength work into her race training The unexpected path she took to reach her sub 3 hour marathon goal How you can go all in and have fun at the same time The importance of being patient and trusting the path you're on Why every training cycle will help you get somewhere new, even if it's not what you planned Links & Resources from the Show: Learn more about Coach Corky Follow Coach Corky on Instagram Learn how to get strong with Strength Running Listen to a podcast about running a sub 3 marathon Periodize your weightlifting with High Performance Lifting NOTE: This episode was first published in August, 2022. Thank you Lever! Lever is back as a sponsor and I couldn't be more excited. They make a treadmill attachment that reduces your body weight, letting you run more mileage than you typically could with less injury risk.   They're also trusted by physical therapists, where they're commonly used during injury recovery so you can keep running with less load and impact. They're a "secret weapon" during rehab of many pro runners. Lever attaches to any treadmill and you hook into it like a harness. It effectively makes you lighter, allowing you to do more running with less risk. So maybe you want to build more mileage, or run hard workouts but you're hesitant because of injury concerns. The pro's have been using Lever for years, letting them get the advantage of more training with fewer injuries. I had the chance to go for a run using Lever and it was deceptively easy to set up and use. All of a sudden, I was running 7min mile pace with the heart rate of 8:30 pace. You can see it in action on our YouTube channel. Go to levermovement.com and use code Strength20 (with a capital S) for 20% off any system! Thank You Wahoo Fitness! We're supported by our newest partner - Wahoo Fitness and the best treadmill in the game, the Wahoo KICKR Run. I have been fortunate to run on a KICKR Run treadmill and they're unique - you will immediately know that you're experiencing one of the smoothest, sturdiest treadmills you can buy.  Go to Wahoo Fitness and use code STRENGTHRUNNING to get a free KICKR Headwind Bluetooth Fan ($319.99 value) with your purchase of a Wahoo KICKR Run treadmill.  They like to say that it's the treadmill that follows you, not the other way around. And that's because it's dynamic - there's a lateral tilt feature that mimics real-world terrain. So as you're running, it varies the side-to-side angle by half a degree every few seconds to keep your muscles ready for outdoor running. And the KICKR Run's dynamic pacing is straight out of a sci-fi movie: the treadmill will match your pace automatically: no controls needed. You'll get a more natural running experience with no breaking to reach controls or setting the pace manually.  See what all the pros are raving about with the Wahoo KICKR Run Treadmill. They changed the game for bike trainers in the cycling industry - and now they're doing the same for runners. Don't forget to use code STRENGTHRUNNING to get a free KICKR Headwind Bluetooth Fan!  Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at LMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. And DOUBLE big news! Their newest flavor Lemonade Salt is now permanently available (it's now my favorite). They're also offering 12oz cans of sparkling LMNT water that has half the sodium concentration of a packet. Check them out. LMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. LMNT is my favorite way to hydrate. I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. Boost your performance and your recovery with LMNT. They're the exclusive hydration partner to Team USA Weightlifting and quite a few professional baseball, hockey, and basketball teams are on regular subscriptions. So check out LMNT to get a free sampler pack and get your hydration optimized for the upcoming season.

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Collide Theatrical's ‘Little Women'Renee Guittar is a Twin Cities dancer, actor, and choreographer. She's performed in the past with Collide Theatrical Dance Company, and she's looking forward to being in the audience to see their production of “Little Women.” The show runs Feb. 6–15 at the Luminary Arts Center in Minneapolis.Renee says: I love seeing Collide's shows, because the dancers are so impressive and athletic, and the shows are just jam-packed with storytelling that is accessible to all sorts of people, whether you've seen a dance show before or you haven't. Yes, you're watching cool dance moves and lifts and turns and all that stuff, but there's a reason why the dancers are doing all those movements, and it's because of the story. And I always loved that as a dancer, but then also, since I've been an audience member, it's so fun to watch.— Renee GuittarRochester City Jazz FestivalEric Heukeshoven is a composer and jazz musician in Winona, and he says it's worth the trip to Rochester on a Wednesday night to catch the Rochester City Jazz Festival. Each Wednesday in February, a different jazz group will perform at Thesis Beer Project from 6–8 p.m.Heukeshoven has this rundown: This coming Wednesday [Feb 11] is a relatively new group from Rochester called Snacklebox. I would call it sort of an instrumental funk band, something along the lines of Corey Wong or even Tower of Power. Really fun — almost all Rochester musicians or Rochester-area musicians. And then on February 18, Zacc Harris, who's an amazing guitarist from the Twin Cities, is coming down. He's a composer and a band leader who's been on the Minneapolis scene for many years." He's performing as part of a trio. And then rounding it out on the 25th is Winona's own Aaron Lohmeyer, and he's formed a trio with a pianist named Mark Whited and Rochester drummer named Alex Ortberg. Aaron has lived in different parts of the U.S., where he's always been close to the Mississippi, and so his music reflects the various cultures [along the river.]— Eric Heukeshoven‘Stardust & Soul' by Sarah PesterCharles “Corky” Reynolds works in the Historic Fournet Building in downtown Crookston, Minn., so he gets to see the art gallery on its second floor. That means, lately, he's had a chance to appreciate Crookston artist Sarah Pester's exhibit “Stardust & Soul: it's in everything.” The series of 41 watercolor, oil and mixed media paintings points both outward to the planets and inward, tying in Pester's work as a yoga teacher and energy practitioner. The exhibit is on view through mid-April.Corky says: You get overwhelmed in a sense that we're such a small part of the whole universe concept, and you kind of reflect and go, “You know, the situation we're in now, maybe that's just a little speck in the whole cosmos.”— Charles “Corky” Reynolds

The late 60's developed some of the biggest names of the Blues in Chicago. Along with Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, James Cotton and others, there was a group of young white guys that learned from these future legends, and they began making a name for themselves along the way. Corky Siegel and Jim Schwall began their musical partnership simply as, "Corky and Jim". [Part 2 of 2]On February 24th, 2005, nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford vanished from her bedroom in Homosassa, Florida—taken through an unlocked door while her family slept. The girl who was afraid of the dark, who couldn't sleep without her stuffed purple dolphin, was about to become the center of one of the most heartbreaking cases in American true crime history.Jessica was a cheerful third-grader who loved singing, helping others, and spending time with her dachshund, Corky. She lived with her father Mark and grandparents Ruth and Archie in a small community where neighbors knew each other. The night she disappeared, she'd just returned from church, been tucked into bed by her grandmother, and fell asleep clutching her favorite toy. By morning, both Jessica and her dolphin were gone. This case matters because it exposed critical failures in sex offender monitoring and directly resulted in Jessica's Law—legislation that now protects children across the United States with mandatory minimum sentences and lifetime electronic monitoring for predators.Content Warning: This episode contains detailed discussion of child abduction, sexual assault, and murder. Richard Speck : The Student Nurse Murders (Part 1)

In the early morning hours of July 14, 1966, Chicago police responded to a call about a woman screaming for help at a townhouse in Chicago's Jeffery Manor neighborhood. When they arrived, they found student nurse Cora Amurao outside the home she shared with eight other student nurses, all of whom had been strangled or stabbed that night by an unknown intruder, while Cora hid underneath her bed. Considered at the time to be a “crime of the century,” the student nurse murders shocked and terrified Chicago residents all across the city. Not only had one man managed to brutally murder eight people, but he had also managed to escape and was loose somewhere in the city. At the time, racially motivated riots had broken out across the city, making the already-burdened Chicago Police Department even more strained when it came to investigating the case. After an intense manhunt that lasted several days, investigators arrested Richard Speck, a twenty-four-year-old unemployed drifter with a criminal history. There was a strong amount of evidence that linked Speck directly to the murders, including his own confession, so when he went to trial, his lawyer tried unsuccessfully to argue Speck was not legally sane at the time of the murders. Unfortunately, the truth was something far worse: Speck killed eight women for no reason whatsoever.ReferencesAltman, Jack, and Marvin Ziporyn. 1967. Three actors, one enigmatic play, and surprising insights into collaboration, craft, and curiosity What can three actors teach you about memory, silence, and creativity? In this episode of Your Creative Mind, I sit down with Jaqui Shiel, Mark Cosby, and Lori Kee, three accomplished performers who brought Harold Pinter's Old Times to life in a Zoom performance in Karen Kohlhaas' directing class that I took. You'll hear how they build layered characters, balance artistic work with everyday demands, and use pauses and presence to create powerful moments on stage and in life. Their stories offer practical strategies you can apply to your own communication, whether you're leading a team, teaching a class, or crafting your next project. If you want fresh insight into acting craft, collaboration, and the artistry of silence, this conversation will spark new ideas and confidence in your own creative journey. The actors in this project were: Jaqui Shiel as Kate, Mark Cosby as Deeley, and Lori Kee as Anna. See below for their information. If you're a producer or a casting director, book them for shows.
