A podcast for my friends. If you don't like it, you're probably not my friend.
You're on a flight somewhere over South America and a man hands you a dying baby, what do you do? Austin Smith tells me the insane story from his recent flight to Bolivia to record a travel video with Wandering Wolf Productions, what happened on that flight was crazier than anything he could have anticipated. Check out Austin's awesome travel videos at www.wanderingwolfproductions.com or on their YouTube page @WanderingWolfProductions
Urban exploration is the exploration of manmade structures, usually abandoned ruins or hidden areas in cities. Photography and historical interest/documentation are heavily featured in the hobby and it sometimes involves trespassing onto private property. Max (@urbexstorm) is an urban explorer that I met in Kyiv in March 2021, he agreed to come on the podcast to discuss urban exploration after we explored some of the tunnels below the city and broke into a Cold War era Soviet nuclear bunker. This is one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and I'm so glad that Max agreed to share some stories with us, I have a feeling I'll be doing more urban exploration in the near future... Don't expect serious conversation in this one as it's Movie Night again! This weeks movie is Coming To America, but the title of this podcast better represents the kind of conversation you'll hear :)
A trip to Cambodia turns into the biggest drug binge imaginable. Alex Hamilton tells me about his crazy backpacking trip round South East Asia, the people he met along the way, and the insane situations he ended up in. Every month I get together with my friends Adam, Jamie, and Ryan to watch a classic movie, we record a podcast beforehand. This months movie is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), but don't expect much talk about that movie, this podcast is just a few friends having a laugh, and is my always my favourite podcast of the month.
Louis CK emailed me last week (yeah, me personally) to tell me about his new comedy special. I bought it for $7.99 off louisck.com and really enjoyed it. What did you think about it? There are so many articles about it online. "Louis C.K. Releases Special No One Asked for, Jokes About Sexual Misconduct" - thedailybeast.com "Louis C.K.’s Newest Fans Deserve Louis C.K.’s Newest Special The way the comedian addresses his misconduct is worse than if he never brought it up at all." - slate.com "Louis CK compares women who are sexually assaulted to slaves in new stand-up special" - independent.co.uk Craig and Alex join me to discuss the comedy, the headlines, and how this compares to Louie's past work.
My mum shares her experience with Coronavirus. What began with a cough, led to two weeks in bed with severe symptoms which led to her being admitted to the COVID-19 ward at the hospital.
My household has been on lockdown for 2 weeks, we've all got it, and my mum is really ill. I have a chat with Shaun and Roman about it, and we talk about geopolitics a bit.
If you dip your balls in soy sauce, can you taste it? How many nights in a row can you tell the restaurant staff that it's your friends birthday? Do Werther's Original taste better when you sit on your grandfather's knee? These questions and more are explored on this month's movie night, we hardly discuss the movie (Spy Hard).
Toilet roll and hand sanitizer are in short supply due to panic buying and hoarding during the coronavirus lockdown. Some people have started selling these sought after items at an inflated price to make a profit, how do you feel about that? Pete and I discuss the morality of price gouging in reference to the two Tennessee men who hoarded over 17,000 bottles of hand sanitizer, and look at multiple other examples from the news and our personal lives.
Shaun and Roman join me to discuss Roman's recent completion of the improv program at Second City Toronto. What is improv? How does it compare to acting and stand up comedy? Roman takes us through the kinds of things he did on the course, the different kinds of people that you meet, what he learned and where you can apply it in life, work, and personal creative projects.
I sit down with Coop from The Spoken Metal Show to look back on a series of metal gigs we went to in Liverpool in early 2020. Despite being a metalhead since I was a teenager and playing in bands most of my life, I've stopped going to shows, I honestly can't remember the last time I went to see a night of unsigned local music. The nights we attended and their line ups are as follows. The Jacaranda Club - Moralslip, Lure In The Outpost Liverpool - Avenoir, Ashen Reach, Target: Renegades O2 Academy Liverpool - Loathe, God Complex, Phoxjaw This was an eye opener for me, taught me a lot about performing live and made me want to play in a band again, but mostly I realised that there is still a live metal scene, I've just been lazy.
Wow, how can a UFC event have one of the most exciting fights ever, followed by the the most boring title fight of all time? Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Weili Zhang was full of everything you want from a fight and you can't really declare either of them a loser, but Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero were both losers in my eyes. Shaun joins me to discuss the fights, the impact on all of the fighters, and the UFC in general.
It's that time of the month again, the lads are back round for movie night! Adam, Ryan, and Jamie join me for 'Van Wilder: Party Liason', although we don't mention it once during the podcast. We talk about a whole range of things but this is 100% a comedy episode, don't expect any serious discussion here. Honestly I'd just check out the intro and if you don't laugh don't bother listening any further. Here are some links to things we reference in the podcast, just in case you want to watch them and see what we're talking about Batman's white eyes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQs6ZQdCBKw Andy Peters burning his lips - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrDTSLtWqws 90's Spar Commercial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXJ443CmZPQ Swordfish Hacking Scene 1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSgmIvUPQS0 Swordfish Hacking Scene 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1Ds9CeG-VY
Connor Jennings is a stand-up comedian that I met on the Manchester open mic scene. We sat down for a really interesting conversation that began at personal development, moved into comedy and performing, and ended up at the nature of reality. If you are into stand-up comedy then you'll enjoy this episode, but if you're an open mic comic that wants to improve then this podcast is a must. We do a deep dive on stand-up from writing and performing techniques to promotion and development. Finally if you want to hear some trippy ideas from two guys who clearly spend a lot of time thinking about dreams, simulations, and consciousness, stick around for the final part of the podcast and open your mind...
I did a bunch of podcasts reviewing each episode of season 8 of Game of Thrones, but it ended so badly that I didn't bother with the last episode. Well, enough time has passed and it's time to open old wounds and look back at the glorious tragedy that was the TV adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire. We look at the terrible writing for the last two seasons, sure they ran out of book material but why oh why didn't they get some help with writing? We look at David Benioff and D.B Weiss' career since Game of Thrones, the gamble they took and the legacy they are left with. We look at ways the show could have been improved, including an awesome bit of writing from one fan on Reddit. Overall we reflect on how incredible it is that a show with such cultural significance disappeared from our lives and our interests overnight, was this Disney's plan all along?
The final installation in the Trump impeachment saga, right? Alex joins me to discuss Trump's acquittal, does this mean he is innocent or was it a sham trial? What does this mean for Trump in November and the Republican Party in the future? Does this help or hurt the Democrats? Why did Pelosi impeach Trump and not Bush? www.midnightmass.church
It's that time of the month again, I get together with Adam, Jamie, and Kaveh to watch Evil Dead 2, this is the chat that we had before the movie started. Jim, Craig, and Kaveh join me to discuss the 2019 UK election, particularly how surprising the result was compared to what was expected, as well as the increasing influence of social media over elections. Conversation leads on to the politics/economics of US/China/Iran. But it's not all politics! The last third of the podcast is all about simulation theory, lucid dreaming, porn, and classic video games......and how they are all linked. Yeah. www.midnightmass.church
Female Dating Strategy is an online message board on Reddit: "The only dating subreddit exclusively for women! We focus on effective dating strategies for women who know what they want, and want to take control of their dating lives. We also focus on strategies to maintain a healthy relationship that benefits you. This sub is for WOMEN ONLY. Read the FDS Handbook to learn more about our philosophy. If you spot a man, report them and they will be promptly banned." This Valentines Day Pete and I look at FDS and discuss what we've found on the message board. Find out what terms like 'Pickmeisha' and 'LVM' mean, hear some of the strategies women employ when dating, and contrast this community with communities such as MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way). Visit FDS at https://www.reddit.com/r/FemaleDatingStrategy/ Visit MGTOW at https://www.reddit.com/r/MGTOW/
Pete joins me before my stand up set in London for an hour of shit talk and comedy riffing.
MMA fans are unhappy with many of the decision results from UFC 247 this past Saturday, especially the main event between John Jones and Dominic Reyes. Craig joins me for a full fight analysis of the main event, did Jones cause more damage or did he "control the fight"? We discuss the fact that our perceptions changed upon second viewing of the fight, and look at MMA judging in general..... I miss Pride.
Doyle quit his job, packed up his things, and went to South America for three months to find answers and meaning. He found many things on this quest that took him from the mountains of Peru, to the depths of the Amazon jungle, what a journey! We discuss some current events at the top of the podcast, Doyle's trip starts at the 37:25 mark.
Basketball player Kobe Bryant dies in a helicopter crash, Ari Shaffir makes a statement, now everyone hates Ari. Was it a joke or was he being a dick? Is Ari's career over now or is there no such thing as bad publicity?
Evaldas Karosas is back after winning the 2019 Beat The Frog World Series! We talk about the competition and it's impact on his comedy career, specifically the gigs that open up to you once you win a competition like this. Evaldas is one of the hardest working comics I've met on the open mic scene, just go see him live and you'll see what I mean. In this conversation we touch many topics including: Edinburgh festival - should you put on a 1 hour show when you don't have a tight 5? The Lithuanian comedy scene. The writing / gigging process. Drunk people at shows and how (not) to handle them. The London scene and when is best time to move there. Should you share your first comedy set on facebook? Gigging in a Christian high school. Adapting your material to the crowd. Kill your babies! Gong shows, what have you got to lose? Are you the best judge of your own set? Comedy CV? Wtf? Plenty of other stuff but this is all I could think of, just check it out. Follow Evaldas on Instagram @nobodus
Every month I sit down with my friends to watch a classic movie, this month it's 'The Cable Guy'. Adam, Ryan, and Jamie join me before the movie to discuss last months video game movie double bill of 'Super Mario Brothers' and 'Street Fighter, and of course we talk a load of other crap including Pogs, Ringo Starr, alcopops, The Chuckle Brothers, Love Island, Karate, Owen Hart, Hollywood Snakes, PPH, Turtles, Jewish anteaters, The Terminator, and plenty more. We also discuss the singer/flute player that auditioned for Adam's band, check out his music video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rluAg1v_mHg
Iran launches missiles into US air bases in Iraq as a retaliation for the assassination of Soleimani, and then a Ukraine airline flight crashes during take off in Tehran, now believed to be a ground to air missile from Iran's defence system. Ryan and Alex join me to discuss the intended and unintended escalation of "World War 3".
Trump just killed Soleimani and everyone is predicting World War 3. Shaun and Alex join me to give their views on this move by the white house, the possibility of war with Iran, and the continuing impeachment saga. It's a political episode, hold on tight!
Erika Ehler is a comic from Toronto who has just moved to London..... that's London England, not Ontario. Peter Davies and I welcome Erika to London with a series of British snacks that she hasn't tried before, this leads on to many conversations including toilet paper socialism, the cereal (toy) isle, Dead or Alive Volleyball, and anti-social cinema foods to name but a few.
I recently was exposed to a style of stand up comedy that I didn't know existed. A man took to the stage and played multiple characters in a series of sketches, combining impressions, acting, absurdism, satire, surrealism, and straight up jokes into a hilarious one man show. His name is Will Franken and he truly is one of a kind. The first clip I saw was about Extinction Rebellion and featured Will's interpretation of Greta Thunberg, I highly recommend you watch at least this clip before checking out this podcast, just so you have a flavour of what Will does.... and so you can laugh your ass off! I sat down with Will for an awesome in depth conversation about comedy, how he got started and developed his act, his career, and this led on to a broader conversation about entertainment and the world we inhabit. Too many subjects to list here, buckle up for an exploration of a fascinating mind and one of the few comedians who are out there pushing the limits of what is possible on stage. This is a man who at one point in his career was writing and performing a new 90 minute show every month, and he almost never writes anything down! Will has had a long career and is a prolific artist, I encourage all comedy fans to check out his YouTube channel to see more of his work, but nothing beats seeing him live. All of his upcoming dates are available on his website www.willfranken.com
Ryan tells me about his time living in The House of Marx, a Socialist household that he lived in with his friends and the impact that this had on his views of Marxism. It's an interesting story that that leads us in to discussing many topics including Jordan Peterson, comic books, video games, woke culture, trolling, online arguments, social justice warriors, democracy, Trudeau, AI and much more.
Adam, Ryan, and Jamie join me for our monthly movie night, this is the "discussion" that occurred before we watched 'Kingpin'. This podcast couldn't be further from last weeks episode, if you're looking for a serious conversation look elsewhere.
In January 2019, WeWork's company valuation was stated as $47 billion, though by September when an IPO was planned and postponed, the valuation was reduced to $10–12 billion, why? Shaun and Roman join me to discuss this case and the broader trend with VC funds. We look at Uber's business model and the reality that they cannot continue at their current pricing structure and turn a profit. How will customers respond to higher prices for Uber? Is blockchain the answer? I think so, but I'm not sure Shaun and Roman are buying it. We end the podcast with a lengthy debate about intellectual property, I believe that it doesn't exist, this is a fun one.
I sit down with Shaun and Roman ahead of the fights last weekend to discuss the new UFC BMF (Bad Mother Fucker) title, it's relevance to the future of the sport, and effect on the rest of the titles. We look at Ben Askren's run in the UFC, is it bad luck or just the UFC effect? We discuss fighter pay, weight cutting, and Brendan Schaub. This is part one of a two part podcast.
The Trump impeachment marches on, Alex joins us from New York to give us an update on whats happening and to call me a partisan troll. Follow Alex on Twitter
