Leah Lothringer is a 40-year-old Australian living in Washington DC and working in IT strategy. She was on a business trip in the United States with no family or connections when COVID-19 broke out in 2020 and was legally forbidden from returning to Australia for more than a year! She ended up meeting her significant other and remained here, only to receive a diagnosis for a rare aggressive cancer that was cured in 2023. She's also connected to death through her life-long hobby of identifying, visiting and photographing abandoned buildings all over the world (the older, more distressed, and haunted, the better). Oh, and her grandparents were Holocaust survivors! Check out her photography on Instagram. Please rate us on Apple and Spotify and subscribe for free at mikeyopp.com This is a public episode. Welcome back B-oo's Crew! This week we head to Northport, AL to visit a once all African American mental hospital. Our story takes place in a time before desegregation. Being a place to relieve the over crowding at Bryce hospital, one can only imagine the horrors that took place here. When a reporter made a visit inside the walls, he likened it to Nazi concentration camps; Finally closing its doors around 1977 and being part of the lawsuit that brought about the Wyatt standards act, This hospital lays empty...or does it? It seems while nature has began to claim the land back, those who suffered at the hands of the state may just still be there. Get ready B-oo's Crew, this one will surely be a crazy ride!Do you have a story you'd like read or played on the show?
Joining us in the studio is none other than Matt, also known as the Wizzard of Iz—yes, with one Z! This urban explorer isn't your average adventurer; he's more like the Indiana Jones of abandoned spaces, except he trades the fedora for a Hawaiian shirt and the whip for a sense of mischief. In this mind-bending episode, Matt regales us with stories that sound like they're straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster. Picture this: playing high-stakes hide and seek with security guards, spreading Christmas cheer by leaving gifts for fellow explorers in the most unexpected places, and hosting a pool party... on the roof of Kings Park! Yes, you heard that right—nothing says "party" like a pool with a view of the city skyline and a side of trespassing. But wait, there's more! Ever heard of undercover cops masquerading as urbexers? Matt has, and he's got the inside scoop. Plus, he takes us behind the rusted bars of Cresson Prison, unveils the chilling mystery of the missing autopsy table, and recounts the harrowing tale of spending eight hours hiding in a closet, only to leap out of a second-floor window to escape an angry owner wielding a hammer. Talk about a great escape! And if you thought Matt's adventures couldn't get any crazier, think again. He'll share the unforgettable tale of how he accidentally chopped off his thumb at an abandoned power plant. Ouch doesn't even begin to cover it! So, grab your popcorn, buckle up, and prepare to be transported to a world where the extraordinary is just another day in the life of the Wizzard of Iz. This is one episode you won't want to miss! He was introduced to the paranormal at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium in 2010, where a ghostly encounter on his very first day made him realize that there's more to this world than we can see. In the years since, he's had the privilege of helping to repair and maintain the historic structure, give tours, and manage the location's social media channels. He started the Waverly Hills Tiktok account and gained more than 100 thousand followers before he left. Urban exploration (often shortened as UE, urbex, and sometimes known as roof and tunnel hacking) is the exploration of manmade structures, usually abandoned ruins or hidden components of the manmade environment. Photography and historical interest/documentation are heavily featured in the hobby, sometimes involving trespassing onto private property. Urban exploration is also called draining (a specific form of urban exploration where storm drains or sewers are explored), urban spelunking, urban rock climbing, urban caving, building hacking, or mousing. The activity presents various risks, including physical danger and, if done illegally and/or without permission, the possibility of arrest and punishment.
On today's Chasing Bandos Podcast episode, I'm joined by Mike, a seasoned urban explorer from Canada. Mike, previously featured with Wade in the Anyox episode and co-hosting an interview with Rob Bryce, takes center stage today, regaling us with unique tales from his abandoned site adventures. Among these is his gripping account of driving with his father to the desolate Uranium City in the remote Canadian wilderness. The perilous journey involved navigating treacherous ice roads, and you can catch all the details on today's pod. Another riveting story involves Mike encountering two grizzly bears in the woods, narrowly saved by a fellow driver at the last moment. Truly a wild experience! In the same adventurous vein, Mike faced off with two metal scrappers concerned about his drone flying, a situation skillfully diffused through quick thinking. Mike's affinity for grand explorations and full-scale abandoned ghost towns shines through. Previously, he shared his exploration of the Anyox abandoned city. This time, he transports us to Montana, unraveling the story of an abandoned Cold-War town meant to be the first responder to a potential nuclear war with Russia. This episode is a treasure trove of stories, too numerous to recount here. Tune in for the full experience. Trust me; it's one exhilarating episode! Today's podcast episode features Monique, a passionate explorer from Virginia. Her journey to our pod began with a video in a Facebook group where she cleverly advised members to keep quiet about abandoned homes' locations. Dedicated to preserving abandoned homes, Monique expresses frustration over members sharing locations in the local Virginia Facebook group, leading to looting and destruction. Monique shares diverse stories, including a poignant visit to her derelict childhood home. Despite its abandoned appearance, she guides us through the emotional experience of reconnecting with her childhood memories. Her adventures in Buffalo, the 'Mecca of Urbex,' involve meeting the 'Mayor of Buffalo.' Buffalo Meg becomes a recurring theme on the Chasing Bandos Podcast recently. Monique unveils a recurring theme of exploring abandoned funeral homes and finding cremains, including the emotional discovery of a baby's ashes. In a compelling tale, Monique contacts a crematorium after finding a man's cremains, uncovering more about his life. The episode explores Monique's adventures in abandoned hospitals, with a special story featuring her mom. Monique passionately describes how urban exploration literally saved her life. Welcome, fellow urban adventurers, to another captivating debate episode. Today, our panel of intrepid explorers, featuring Nick (karmacula), Dave (freaktography), Tommy (moldy_lungs), Justin (ihatejustincurtis) and the host of the Chasing Bandos Podcast, Greg Abandoned, is ready to embark on a journey through the heart of urbex mysteries. First up, we unravel the essential urbex terminology — delving into the intriguing realms of "dick riders" and "grifters." What do these terms mean in the context of abandoned exploration, and who among our intrepid quartet falls into these categories? Moving on to the enigma that is "Urbex Con," we question its necessity, especially in the seemingly non-urbex hub of Texas. Who runs it, and what's the agenda behind this unconventional gathering of urban explorers? Our gaze then shifts to the famed Lynnewood Hall, the 'Titanic Mansion,' exploring not just the tragic history but the scandalous prices one must pay to visit. What secrets lie behind its dilapidated walls? Cresson Prison, once a haven for explorers, now faces a conflict of ownership. Who are the new proprietors, and what sparks the tension between the old and new guards of this abandoned institution? As we navigate the moral compass of exploring abandoned houses, we ponder the ethical dilemmas of invading privacy versus the allure of these forgotten homes as the last frontiers of exploration. The debate intensifies with a showdown between Bill Finan and Keeper - what sparks this ongoing feud, and is resolution on the horizon? Intrigue deepens with the revelation of a canceled second boxing match involving Keeper and the mysterious Ronnie Walker. What's the deal behind these canceled bouts, and what drama awaits? Nick's stalker takes center stage, prompting a reflection on the diverse individuals joining the urbex community and the potential links to mental health issues. Are we all wanderers, or do shadows lurk in our midst? The modern exploration dilemma surfaces: Is urbex about "getting the shot," risking the loss of the true essence of exploration for the perfect photograph? Exploring with companions becomes a battleground of pros and cons, exploring the delicate balance that can lead to friendships flourishing or fading away. False accusations cast a shadow over the urbex community. Is it a breeding ground for baseless allegations, and can a misstep lead to undeserved scrutiny? The podcast shines a light on the graffiti community from the urbex perspective. Is graffiti more than mere vandalism, transcending into an art form that lives within explorers' pictures? We grapple with the etiquette of asking for a spot, the discomfort that surrounds it, and the instances when seeking location advice is deemed acceptable. The debate expands to the art of lock-picking — Is it a valuable skill in the urbex toolkit, and when is it ethically acceptable to use it to open up new spaces? Roof-topping takes center stage as we weigh the risks against the reward of experiencing breathtaking views from precarious heights. Contemplating the future of the hobby, we question whether new blood is needed in the urbex community and whether seasoned explorers are willing to guide newcomers into this intriguing realm. The podcast explores the dynamics of taking a large group to an abandoned place—weighing the pros and cons of turning exploration into a party versus treating it as serious business. We tackle the burning question of whether smoking while exploring is acceptable and ponder whether doing sports with permission still qualifies as urbex. So, fasten your seatbelts, dear listeners, as we unravel the threads of urban exploration in this debate episode. Grimbo, dubbed the 'drain prodigy kid' since his teenage years, aspired to join the Cave Clan but faced internal politics within the Australian underground community. Despite challenges, he's thriving independently. In New Zealand, Grimbo's future drain adventures were foreshadowed by a harrowing plane flight. Grimbo also discussed a controversial aspect involving an explorer whose questionable interests coincided with Grimbo's growing interest in drain exploration. The podcast explores what makes a good drain, the dangers of exploration, and the ability to predict hazards. Grimbo shares techniques for finding drains but underscores the extreme danger. He strongly advises against solo exploration or without experienced companions. Grimbo takes listeners into the world of drains, sharing crazy stories, including encounters with large eel (twice) and fighting a trapped sparrow. The podcast delves into what makes a drain safe and survival strategies, along with experiences related to his rejection of joining Cave Clan.
