The San Francisco Giants' addition of Matt Chapman certainly made things awkward for incumbent Giants third baseman J.D. Davis. With the SF Giants adding Chapman to the fold, it's hard to see how J.D. Davis cracks the roster. Chapman is here to play third base; shortstop is not going to happen. The DH spot is occupied by Jorge Soler. Wilmer Flores and LaMonte Wade Jr. take up first base for the SF Giants. That leaves J.D. Davis without a starting job and without a spot on the bench.Another player who seemingly needs to be dealt is Joey Bart. For both players, the only way they'd seem to stick on the roster would be in the event of an unfortunate injury. Chapman, Soler, or Flores getting hurt could keep Davis around. For Bart, an injury to Patrick Bailey or Tom Murphy—signed to a two-year deal this offseason to be Bailey's backup—could keep him around, although Blake Sabol may even make the team ahead of the out-of-options Bart even though Sabol can be optioned. If the Giants want to add one more big-name starter (either Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery), they'd have to clear some payroll or else go over the first luxury tax threshold. One player the Giants could trade in order to do so: Michael Conforto. Luis Matos seems deserving of a role in the majors, and Conforto is standing in his way. And his $18M salary could stand in the way of the SF Giants signing one more big-name pitcher, something they need with an inexperienced rotation that continues to get bit by the injury bug. The latest casualty is Sean Hjelle, who will be shut down and re-evaluated in two weeks with an elbow strain.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants' new backup catcher has been one of the best hitters in baseball against left-handed pitching since 2019. Tom Murphy, who has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $8.25M deal with the SF Giants with a club option for a third year, is a lefty masher who's a perfect complement to Giants primary catcher Patrick Bailey. Murphy's main issue has been staying on the field. But when he's been out there, he's been a forced to be reckoned with against southpaws. The ramifications are plentiful. First of all, the Giants' addition of Murphy—on a multiyear pact, no less—likely means it's the end of the line for Joey Bart with the SF Giants. Bart is importantly out of minor league options, meaning he can no longer be optioned without being exposed to waivers. The Giants' lack of faith in Bart has been evident for years, and their signing of Murphy seemingly seals his fate. Bart will likely be traded at some point before Opening Day. (He has little trade value, for what it's worth).Blake Sabol will also feel the impact of this signing. Last season, because he was a Rule 5 selection, Sabol had the luxury of needing to stay in the majors all season or else be offered back to the Pirates. The SF Giants clearly wanted to avoid that scenario, so Sabol spent the entire season in MLB. Now that that's over, however, Sabol will have a full slate of minor league options. Meaning he likely becomes the Giants' third catcher, with the fact that he has three option years remaining being a huge plus. Sabol showed promise with the bat vs. RHP, and his framing was solid, but he needs to work on his ball blocking, which was a significant issue.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Chris and Billy embraced opportunity and reached out to Mike and Garrett and asked to turn their story into a musical. This was their first co-writing project and it took a long time to learn each other and how to compliment one another. The Pandemic allowed them time to really dedicate the time needed to get this show together. After the workshop of Straight Forward, they took it to the New York Theatre Festival. Through Pivitol Productions, Chris and Billy are able to train, educate and employ young theatre artists to find their own voice and gain meaningful experience so they can have long, lasting careers in the industry. If you remember the article (2014), go take an ibuprofen for your back. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Chris Sabol (@chrissabs) and Billy Aberle (@billyaberle) to talk about their brand new musical, Straight Forward (@straightforwardmusical) and the real life story that inspired it. Not only did Chris and Billy go to college with Ellie (and experience the exclusive pre-coming out variant of your favorite tol le$bean host), but together they have written and produced a gay musical (remind you of anyone?). We chatted with Billy and Chris about the challenges of writing and then producing an Off-Broadway run and the importance of telling LGBTQ+ stories of all kinds, especially in the face of the current political climate. The article and the story behind it are both incredibly true to their time. For those of you who are less familiar with the real life story of “straight men” Mike and Garrett and the effect their relationship had on the queer and straight communities alike, strap in for the tale of your new favorite ‘and they were roommates' couple. The story itself is one all queer people can relate to at its core. As much as we may have blotted out of the memories, pretty much all of us started out our lives identifying as ‘straight'. But what happens if you truly believe you are straight (like you are legitimately happy being straight) and then you start to fall in love with your best friend? Not in the, ‘Oh, I fell in love with my best friend so I should re-evaluate my sexuality' kind of way. But in the, ‘I still overwhelmingly identify as straight and that feels true, but there seems to be this one very surprising exception' kind of way.  Yes, to us and probably you, falling in love with your best friend based on who they are on the inside while disregarding their physical looks and gender identity, is a pretty queer-coded experience. But this is not the case from Mike and Garrett's perspective; and their experience of sexuality is just as valid as any other. The story of two self-identified straight men leaning into their newly discovered feelings for one another and being open to exploring their evolving relationship (while still largely identifying as straight) captivated just about everyone on first read, sparking serious and important conversations about the fluid nature of sexuality and the many different ways to experience it that are still relevant today.  Learn more about Pivotal Productions' Straight Forward at straightforwardmusical.com.  Don't forget to follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. The San Francisco Giants cannot catch a break. What they can catch, unfortunately, are broken bones. Thairo Estrada is the latest Giants player to go down with an injury, as he suffered a broken left hand after being hit by a pitch on Sunday against the Mets. The SF Giants already lost Mitch Haniger to a broken forearm, and they've dealt with numerous soft-tissue injuries to players like Mike Yastrzemski, Michael Conforto, LaMonte Wade Jr., Alex Cobb, and J.D. Davis. Thankfully, Yastrzemski was activated off the IL yesterday and Conforto returned to the lineup after missing a few games with a hamstring issue. It wasn't enough, however, to prevent another Giants loss. Logan Webb was really good over 6.2 innings, striking out 11 Mariners and allowing just two runs, but the San Francisco Giants were shut down offensively outside of Blake Sabol, who hit two impressive home runs. Sabol also cost the Giants a run with a passed ball and wild pitch that should have been blocked. The losses are piling up a bit for the Giants right now, as they've dropped six of their last eight games. They're now tied for the NL's final wild card spot, and their competition continues to win seemingly every night. Per FanGraphs, the Giants' playoff odds have fallen to about 63%, down from about 75% just a few days ago. The Giants need to get back on track and avoid spiraling into the All-Star break. All of these injuries have created opportunities for young players like Luis Matos and Casey Schmitt, but thus far those players haven't really produced.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

It wasn't without some controversy, but the San Francisco Giants casually collected their 10th straight win on Wednesday against the Padres. The Giants' winning streak of 10 games is their longest since 2004. The SF Giants' streak began with the team sitting at 32-32, but now they're 10 games over .500 and their playoff odds are skyrocketing. They have a legitimate shot at the NL West, and they're now the No. 1 Wild Card team. The controversy involved the Home Plate Collision rule, and it was actually not all that controversial. Padres catcher Gary Sánchez blocked Giants baserunner Blake Sabol's path to the plate before he was in possession of the baseball. Case closed—that's a violation of the rule. Like it or not, the rule is the rule, and the Giants took advantage. Sabol was ruled safe, and the Giants went on to score two additional runs in the inning. So the play had a huge impact on the game, which ended with a final score of 4-2.Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski was banged up in the process. He injured his left hamstring in that inning that was extended and had to leave the game. An MRI revealed only inflammation, which is a best case scenario. Yaz is hopeful to avoid the injured list, so he's in a similar kind of purgatory as SF Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr., who's nursing a side injury but hasn't been placed on the IL. Those two are obviously very key players for the Giants and they can't afford to lose them. Bryce Johnson was recalled prior to today's game, and Sean Hjelle was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants committed $43.5 million to Mitch Haniger in the offseason, expecting him to be the same player he's consistently been whenever he's been healthy enough to be on the field. For the first month or so of the season, the Giants were without Haniger, who injured his oblique (and later his back) as the season got going. But Haniger has been healthy for over a month now, and the SF Giants are still waiting for him to be a consistent performer offensively. What's behind Haniger's struggles, and will he break out of it?Blake Sabol has been a success story for the Giants so far this season. Taken by the Reds in the Rule 5 draft, the SF Giants immediately traded for Sabol, who's played catcher, outfield, and DH for the Giants this year. But really, Sabol's greatest strength so far has been hit bat—particularly against right-handed pitching. Will he stick on the roster all season if he doesn't really have a defensive home? And what's his future with the San Francisco Giants beyond 2023 if they're able to keep him all year and shed his Rule 5 status? What's behind SF Giants prospect Luis Matos' major turnaround from last year to this year? In 2021, Matos was so impressive as a 19-year-old in Low-A that he was widely considered a Top 50 prospect. His 2022 season in High-A, however, was massively disappointing that he fell off virtually all top prospect lists. This year, the biggest improvement has been plate discipline. He nearly doubled his walk rate from 2022 in Double-A, and earned a promotion to Triple-A, where he continues to tear it up. Matos has put himself on the doorstep of the major leagues where he's a phone call away from a spot in the Giants' outfield.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

One day after a dramatic comeback win, the San Francisco Giants played extremely ugly baseball in a loss to the Twins in the series finale. It all began in the first inning, when the SF Giants had things set up beautifully against Joe Ryan, who's been one of the game's best pitchers this season. The Giants had runners on second and third with nobody out, but they were unable to score. That type of situation came up again and again, and the SF Giants were consistently unable to capitalize. The Giants also had major defensive issues in the loss. Michael Conforto let a ball sail over his head. Blake Sabol had a costly passed ball. Brandon Crawford clanked two easily catchable balls, one a throw from Sabol and one a routine grounder that should've ended an inning. Brett Wisely also let a routine ground ball go right through him. What is the level of concern with Crawford? He's not hitting at all (although he did have a good offensive game today), but he also looks very much not like himself on defense. And what can the SF Giants do with Craw if they determine he's simply no longer their best option at short? And what is the level of concern with Mitch Haniger, who remains in a very deep slump at the plate? Finally, the latest on exciting Giants minor leaguers in Triple-A Luis Matos and Kyle Harrison is discussed.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants badly needed some positive momentum, and they got it thanks to Tony DeSclafani and Logan Webb. Despite some moaning and groaning about the Giants' offense so far this year, it's clear that their biggest issue has been run prevention. Unlike last year, the issue hasn't been defense. It's just been shaky pitching, especially out of the bullpen.Enter DeSclafani and Webb, who combined for 15.2 innings and two runs in their two starts. The Giants won DeSclafani's game 2-0, and Webb's game 4-2. Meaning the SF Giants' offense only averaged three runs a game in the final two games of the series, but sometimes you simply need your pitchers to step up and keep runs off the board and put the team in position to win. DeSclafani has been excellent all season and Webb was oh-so-close to eight scoreless himself, before he was bit by a two-out homer in the eighth, continuing a perplexing home run trend for him this season.Joey Bart had his fingerprints all over these two wins. He handled a shaky Camilo Doval in the middle game of the series, twice calling time out and taking a mound visit as Doval was about to be charged with a pitch clock violation that would've resulted in a walk and brought the tying run to the plate. Then in the series finale, Bart got the Giants' first rally going by fighting off a tough pitch for a single, and later added a booming double into left-center that added to the SF Giants' lead. With Gary Sánchez opting out of his minor league deal with San Francisco, this is Bart and Sabol's team, at least for now.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Can the San Francisco Giants possibly fit Joey Bart, Blake Sabol, and Patrick Bailey on the same roster? That question has become more and more relevant by the day, as Bart has showed signs of improvement, Sabol has done enough to stick for now (despite some extreme highs and lows), and 2020 first-rounder Bailey was promoted to Triple-A.None of that even speaks to Gary Sánchez's impending ability to opt out of his minor league deal if he's not in the majors by Monday. It wasn't supposed to end this way. Among hitters with at least 50 plate appearances, no one had K'd at a higher rate than San Francisco Giants catcher/outfielder Blake Sabol. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is one of the best relievers in the game, and his strength is striking people out. Sabol and the Giants were one strike away from a loss. Instead, Sabol, who was sitting on a slider after receiving only one fastball on 20 pitches all night, blasted it high and deep into center field, and the SF Giants pulled off their best and most joyous win of the young season. They've won four games in a row.Sabol's position on the roster seemed like it might be in jeopardy just 48 hours ago. With Joey Bart playing well and Gary Sánchez nearing the date on which he can opt out of his minor league contract with the SF Giants if he's not in the majors—in addition to Sabol's major strikeout woes so far—it seemed like his time on the roster could be nearing an end. But an injury to Bart, which seems like it may actually be minor, thankfully, gave Sabol a little more breathing room. And he took advantage in a huge way last night, delivering the Giants' biggest swing of the year.Speaking of injured players, Mitch Haniger wasn't in the lineup last night a day after returning from the IL. Some fans expressed concerns that the Giants were platooning Haniger already, but that's just not the case. They likely want to ease him back into action, and if they wanted him to start two of his first three games back, it made the most sense to skip the middle game when they were facing a righty. Haniger should hopefully be back in the lineup tonight, and in there pretty much every day all season if he stays healthy.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Blake Sabol has been on fire this spring for the San Francisco Giants. The Rule 5 pick has forced his way onto the Giants' Opening Day roster, but injuries in the outfield to Mitch Haniger and Austin Slater have put Sabol into the outfield—for now. But what happens when Haniger and Slater return? Sabol was being evaluated as a catcher in camp, and the Giants likely wouldn't carry three catchers once Sabol is no longer in the outfield mix.We know that Roberto Pérez will make the SF Giants' Opening Day roster. We don't know for sure whether the other catcher will be Joey Bart or Austin Wynns. It might seem like an obvious call, but don't rule out the possibility that Bart, who has been known to go through long stretches of strike out out in nearly half of his plate appearances, could be optioned to the minors. Even if he does make the Opening Day roster, if he struggles and Sabol hits well, it's not out of the question that Sabol could be given a chance to be the primary catcher. The question with Sabol is defense behind the plate, where he is thought to be quite raw.Switching gears, several other mailbag questions are answered. Why does Gabe Kapler use power hitters in the leadoff spot? Is he just trying to be different? What is the Giants' schedule like this year? What's up with Hunter Bishop and does Mike Yastrzemski have minor league options? What is a realistic ceiling this season for the Giants in terms of wins?Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Will Blake Sabol be Connor Joe 2.0, or something more than that? Will Bryce Johnson establish himself as a major league starter? The San Francisco Giants and their fans are seemingly about to find out, as Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said during the television broadcast last night that Sabol, Johnson, and Sean Hjelle are likely to make the SF Giants' Opening Day roster.Sabol is a Rule 5 pick who was tried out at catcher all spring, but it was actually an injury to Mitch Haniger that seemingly opened the door for him. Sabol has been an outfielder for the majority of his pro career, and he's likely to become the latest in a long line of different Opening Day left fielders for the Giants. Johnson was a major disruptor on the bases for the SF Giants this spring, and his switch-hitting ability help counterbalance what will be an all-lefty outfield without Haniger and Slater. He also provides strong defense in center.Switching gears, what will the SF Giants do at third base if David Villar struggles out of the gates? Will they settle for below average defenders such as J.D. Davis and Wilmer Flores? Or will Casey Schmitt be a realistic option? Zaidi said on the broadcast that he believes Schmitt is really close to MLB ready. He's ticketed for Triple-A, but could become an option at third or short if he hits well in Sacramento.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

There's only one week left to decide. The San Francisco Giants play their final exhibition game a week from today, and the catcher position remains a great unknown. Blake Sabol has had a terrific spring, but has he done enough to stick on the SF Giants' roster and be in that Opening Day lineup in New York against Gerrit Cole?Is there really a chance Joey Bart could not make the Opening Day roster? Bart's struggles in the majors thus far have been well documented, but he is not far removed from being considered one of the game's best prospects. However, he can be optioned to the Minor Leagues, whereas Sabol has to make the team or be offered back to the Pirates. That gives Sabol an edge. Roberto Pérez seems likely to make the Giants' roster because of his experience and reputation as an excellent defender and leader. The recent WBC games are discussed. The United States has advanced to the championship game after winning big over Cuba, but the finals figure to present far more of a challenge. Both Mexico and Japan have far more talented teams than Cuba, and the US will have its hands full. Jose Altuve's injury and Trea Turner's heroics are discussed.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

There are two sides to every coin. The San Francisco Giants are suddenly dealing with an injury bug—which happens to every team every year in some form or another. Mitch Haniger has a Grade 1 oblique strain; Brandon Crawford has left knee discomfort; David Villar has a mild hip flexor strain. None of these injuries necessarily mean those players will miss the Giants' Opening Day game in New York, but they certainly could. In that case, is it time for SF Giants fans to panic? Or do the Giants have the depth to cover these injuries?Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol might stand to benefit the most if there's an injury to an outfielder. He might make the team regardless considering how well he's performed in spring, but the current catcher has spent most of his career in the outfield. If Haniger has to start the season on the IL, it seems likely that the San Francisco Giants would use the opportunity to keep Sabol on the roster. Regarding Brandon Crawford, an injury to the veteran could create some problematic defensive alignments, with Thairo Estrada moving to short, David Villar (if he's healthy) moving to second, and J.D. Davis (or Wilmer Flores) moving to third.Alternatively, the SF Giants could give an opportunity to young players like Brett Wisely or Isan Díaz, both of whom are on the 40-man roster and play middle infield. More so than in recent years, the Giants have some interesting young talent that appears ready to step in in the event of these injuries. The SF Giants also have Casey Schmitt, the star defender, close to MLB ready. Schmitt will almost certainly start the season in Triple-A, but if he dominates offensively, he could quickly become an answer at either third base or shortstop.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

For every Carlos Rodón, there's often a Tommy La Stella. The San Francisco Giants got a career year out of Rodón in 2022, but they also suffered through injuries and underperformance from like likes of La Stella and others. Who on the 2023 SF Giants are the candidates to have a career year? And who will underperform? By definition, it's a hard question to answer, but the Giants have a lot of candidates to have big seasons and not many who are likely to play poorly. Youngsters Joey Bart and David Villar still have a lot to prove, however. What are the rules for Rule 5 picks? Specifically, what is going to happen with Blake Sabol? Sabol was a Rule 5 pick by the Reds, and the SF Giants traded for him minutes later. Sabol must make the Giants' 26-man roster—and stay there all season—or be offered back to the Pirates. He's part of the catcher competition with Bart, Roberto Pérez, and Austin Wynns. Will the SF Giants be buyers or sellers at the deadline? Unless they're totally out of the race, which is unlikely, expect them to be either buyers or somewhere in between. Even when they've "sold" under Farhan Zaidi, the moves have been relatively minor. He famously held onto Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith in 2019, and Rodón last year. When they've been in their best buying position, the Giants acquired Kris Bryant. Expect those trends to continue depending on where the Giants are in late July.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
