Erik Tait is a world class magician and someone I love to see perform. He has spent over two decades performing as a juggler, standup comedian, and magician. In 2020 Erik decided that he wanted to compete in the 2022 FISM, which is the world championship of magic. Even though he is comfortable on almost any stage in the world, in preparing for the competition he realized he had some deep-seated fears that were affecting his performance. His fear was so acute that it would cause his hand to shake uncontrollably, which is the last thing a card magician wants. Erik's therapist taught him tapping and he credits it (and other tools) with helping him to overcome his fear and win third place in the competition. This made him only the fourth American to accomplish this, and the first American to stand on the podium for card magic in two decades. In this week's podcast, Erik shares how he was first introduced to tapping, how he used it to overcome his fear when preparing for FISM, and how he still uses it today. Even if you never want to perform on stage, Erik's insights are valuable for anyone interested in improving their performance in any arena or endeavor. ALSO, if you want to be blown away by world class magic, you can watch the act we talked about during the interview here: Erik Tait's FISM performance Support the podcast! In today's episode, Amanda sits down over some Guinness with actor, writer, and singer-songwriter Tricia Black (Second City Toronto's Mainstage 83rd/84th Reviews, Kim's Convenience, The Broken Hearts Gallery) to discuss figuring out your personal brand, our warped expectations of celebrities, and having shows shut down because of COVID. She was a cast member of Second City Toronto's 83rd and 84th mainstage review, as well as their first-ever, all-female show, the award-winning She The People. She is a two-time Canadian Comedy Award winner, and can be seen on screen in Kim's Convenience, What We Do In The Shadows, and The Broken Hearts Gallery. She is also the Artistic Producer of a Broadway World award-winning theatre company Tweed & Company where she writes and composes new Canadian musical works. This summer Tricia launched her podcast One More Round with Tricia Black, a weekly comedy podcast where she sits down and has a drink (or two) with people she wants to get to know, people that inspire her, and friends who she adores. I had the pleasure of being a guest on her podcast, so go take a listen!   Tricia would like to highlight Egale. They are Canada's leading organization for LGBTQI2S people and issues. Let us be your self-help sidekicks! Hosts Andrew Norton and Rob Norman help ordinary people through the little things that they'd never bring to a life coach - like kicking a snooze button addiction or talking to cashiers - but that still deserve celebrating. This humorous podcast applauds half-wins and the quiet satisfaction of getting less bad at everyday things. Topics tackled in Season 2 include being able to dance in public and learning to be passionate about cooking, and the new season launches with Chandler, a woman in her 30s, who wants to get her first credit card. Season one was named among the best podcasts of 2018 by Vulture, Apple, The Globe & Mail as well as Huffington Post. Season 2 launched May 14, 2019 with 9 episodes x 30 mins. Andrew Norton is a radio producer and filmmaker. He’s made stories on everything from baseball mascots to legendary skateboarding tricks for outlets like CBC’s Wiretap, NPR, WBEZ and podcasts like 99% Invisible. And to answer the first question you’ll have when you meet him — he’s 6’6”. Rob Norman is the author of Improvising Now, as well as an instructor and director at the Second City Toronto. In addition to producing The Backline weekly podcast, Rob is a Canadian Screen Award winner for his performance on CityTV’s Sunnyside. And yes, Rob is tall but he doesn’t make a big deal about it. Interview by Blaine Schlechter & CBC PR -With Andrew Norton and Rob Norman Congrats on the upcoming season 2 of your Podcast – Personal Best. Tell us about the show? Andrew – We like to say it’s a self-improvement show for people who don’t like self-improvement. Each episode is like a mini-documentary and people come to us with something that they want to improve about themselves and it’s usually something petty…something weird that you normally wouldn’t want to go to a “life coach” for. Over the course of the episode we try our best to find experts; to develop activities to try and get them better at whatever it is they want to improve on. It’s a great concept…where did the concept for the show come from? Rob – I was doing a bunch of storytelling events around town and Andrew saw a video and said ‘ooh…I want to make a little documentary about it’ so we filmed that, in about 2015 or something. Years and years later, CBC was looking for a comedy podcast and I thought it sounded like a great opportunity. I only knew one person who makes podcasts and that was Andrew. So I called Andrew and we met at a coffee shop…later I would realize neither of us drink coffee…and I threw an idea (out there) and Andrew did not like the idea, but together we kind of came up with something that kind of meshed together to become Personal Best. So a real mess of an origin story I’d say. Andrew – Yah, there wasn’t like an ‘aha’ moment of a light bulb flickering on or something like that romantic. So you guys knew each other before the show came out, the show didn’t really bring you guys together? Rob – We were pretty much strangers when we were making this video and I was just getting into podcasting and Andrew had mentioned that he had done some so I was asking him a lot of questions about the craft, but yah…our relationship has all been through the show. Andrew – We were like Facebook buddies for a while where he was the one person where “Oh…Rob has an improv show coming up…this guys on my Facebook…I forgot about that” and then a few years later he reached out. So we knew each other a little bit I guess you could say. Rob – And for the record, Andrew has never come to one of my improv shows! Andrew – Well Rob does a really good job of not glamorizing Improv as well! Do you guys have any personal favorite moments from Season 1? Andrew – The cow birth episode I would say, especially in hindsight. We were such ‘threading the needle’ or ‘out on a wire on that one’; I can’t believe we pulled it off. So much had to come together, where not only were we helping this lady who wanted to birth a cow, we were building her skills up, getting her ready to do that…(but) we were actually trying to find a cow that was going to give birth and trying to make that happen within that time frame. Even listening back to that, it was ‘whoa…that worked out really well’. That was an interesting one; a fun one for sure. This week on the TYF! podcast, Paul Myers, author of KIDS IN THE HALL: ONE DUMB GUY, the authorized biography of the legendary sketch group, talks about his start as a "failed" Toronto musician, how following stage fright led him to follow in his brother (and future comedy legend) Mike's footsteps to a class at famed improv school Second City Toronto, which introduced him to Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald, and through them he met the rest of the KIds In The Hall. We also hear about how his friendship with the Barenaked Ladies launched him from rock journalist to acclaimed biographer, and how his long-running friendship with the Kids led to the publication of this book. It's a hell of an interview and you can't miss a single second. PLUS: We talk to baseball expert, and host of the Locked on MLB podcast, Paul Sullivan about the controversial proposal to bring the Designated Hitter rule to the National League.

Ann Pornel is the new best friend we all need. Ann is currently in ’She the People’ which is entirely created, designed, and performed by the fearless funny women of the Second City. Ann has an affinity for baseball butts (especially if your name is Jose Bautista), is a hilarious and intelligent performer and writer, and a fierce friend who isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes in. We discuss all of these things, but the main theme of this episode is definitely diversity. Why it’s important to see it on our stages and screens, and who is responsible for making these changes in our community. Ann is truly a dope chick with a heart of gold and a killer eye for fashion. You’re going to ADORE her. You’re not going to want to miss ’She the People’ running Thursdays to Sundays now till Nov. 25 at the Second City Toronto! This week we’re starting off talking about that one magical person in your life, the person who’s always believed in you. For me, that was my Aunty Marie, always trusting me to take on these small but important tasks, which made me think “oh ya, I can do this”. This kind of respect definitely helped shape my personality and my confidence. Our guest this week is the lovely Marypat Farrell! We’re both Second City Toronto alumni and her acting credits include 'The Gavin Crawford Show’, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and ‘Anger Management’. We’re talking about the importance of happiness and pursuing everything you can in your career. She’s inspiring, hilarious, and an all around firecracker. Enjoy!

Ashley Comeau’s advice to you all: “Never fail the John Cleese test!” We’ll let her share with you the story behind the quote. Ashley has cobbled together a career in a variety of creative endeavours. All of which have contributed in some way to her current success. She has worked in writing, performing and producing for the prestigious Second City troupe in Toronto, as well as at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival. In this interview from the Banff World Media festival, you'll learn how Ashley manages the hard work and intermittent income of the entertainment business. On the one hand, there may be months of six nights and eight shows per week. Then there might be months of working at a desk job or restaurant serving gig to pay the bills and fund your upcoming creative project. All these life experiences can sharpen the mind and body to remain alert to improv opportunities both on stage and off. And Ashley has certainly exercised her own performing and writing skills in both arenas. You might find it interesting to learn that, in addition to performers, people from professions such as law, education and medicine also flock to improv training sessions where coaches such as Ashley help them with their skills in listening and improvisation. Bottom line: Get to the work you need to do to get to the work you want to do! And never fail the John Cleese test! Just be nice!
