After Republicans refuse to negotiate with Democrats on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, the government shuts down. Dan and Alex Wagner, Pod Save America's newest contributor, discuss what Democrats will need to do to hold the line; Project 2025 architect Russ Vought's attacks on blue states and federal employees; and the Democratic-Republican messaging fight that's devolved into an AI-fueled meme war. Then, the two break down Trump's threats — and Hegseth's grievances — at an unprecedented meeting of the military's top brass, Trump's new political demands for universities, and some much-needed good news about free speech, Fed Chair Lisa Cook, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Government Shutdown Narrative Democrats blamed for deliberately causing the shutdown for political reasons. Framed as Chuck Schumer’s attempt to appeal to progressive factions like AOC. House Republicans passed a “clean CR” (continuing resolution) to keep government funding stable, but Democrats rejected it. Healthcare for Illegal Immigrants Democrats WANT taxpayer-funded healthcare for undocumented immigrants. Cited past Democratic presidential debate where all candidates raised hands in support of coverage for undocumented immigrants. References to California and New York already providing state-level healthcare to undocumented immigrants. Argument that Democrats are gaslighting the public by denying this stance. Crime in “Blue Cities” Senate Judiciary Committee hearing highlighted as focusing on rising crime rates in Democrat-led cities. Claims that progressive DAs, often linked to George Soros funding, refuse to prosecute violent criminals. Examples cited: New York, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee DA cases. Pattern described of criminals repeatedly being released and reoffending. Defund the Police & Bail Reform Criticism of Democratic-led efforts to defund or reduce police funding (examples: Minneapolis, New York, Austin). Soros-backed DAs accused of eliminating cash bail, downgrading felonies, and prioritizing criminals over victims. Proposed Solutions Sen. Cruz mentions his “Clean DC Act,” aimed at reversing soft-on-crime laws in Washington, D.C. Advocates stronger penalties and more police support. Credits Trump with using the National Guard to reduce crime in DC. Left-Wing Violence Democratic rhetoric is causing violent outcomes (e.g., BLM riots, anti-Semitic incidents, ICE facility attacks). Claims left-wing activists celebrate violence while conservatives condemn it. Mentions assassination attempts (Trump, Justice Kavanaugh) and murder of Charlie Kirk as examples of left-inspired violence. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, Democrats are not just the only concern, radio/TV hosts, podcasters and journalists are part of a larger issue. It is unacceptable that many of these hosts, who promote left-wing agendas or toxic conservative, lack a true understanding of the conservative movement, its principles, and its history. William F. Buckley Jr. founded National Review because he recognized the importance of quality journalism, a value that seems to have diminished in today's media landscape. Buckley identified the toxic elements within the conservative party and took extraordinary measures to combat that toxicity and the radical left. Buckley had a profound realization, one that resonates with us today: the destructive influence being wielded to spread hatred and undermine our faith and nation through our media and publications. Buckley was Catholic, and he did everything to reject the antisemitism that is growing in our nation. He said that we had to stop it, because it has a way of metastasizing into something dangerous and rejects all forms of antisemitism as a result. In addition, a terrorist attack at a UK synagogue in Manchester killed two people and injured many was devastating. The antisemitism continues to grow as it is being fueled by radical people in power and other countries. Qatar is trying to turn our own people against us by taking over our schools, funding and supporting Hamas and other terrorist front groups. This is a serious problem, and it is not just affecting our country, it is affecting other nations as well. This is what fuels these attacks, and it is disgusting and sick. Finally, Jack Ciattarelli calls in to discuss his race for NJ Governor against radical Mikie Sherrill. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Can Trump's Gaza peace plan actually work? Sarah and Beth break down the 20-point proposal and why Netanyahu is finally feeling the heat. They discuss what's changed—from polling on Israel to Ukraine's drone warfare lessons—and whether this administration's transactional approach might accidentally deliver lasting peace. Why are so few panicking about the government shutdown? With funding lapsed and Congress in recess, Beth and Sarah explore the "giant shrug" response from those not directly affected and whether crying wolf has made actual shutdowns feel disminished. They debate Democratic strategy on healthcare protections, discuss the problem with shutdown threats, and propose what a genuine budget process reform could look like. What happened when Pete Hegseth called 800 generals to Quantico? Sarah and Beth dissect the defense secretary's retreat featuring Christian nationalism, complaints about "fat" people in the military, and Trump's "enemy within" rhetoric. They work through the tension of taking legitimate military critiques seriously while resisting the administration's trap of making everything a partisan thunderdome—and why the calm response from cities with National Guard deployments offers a better model. John welcomes former Obama White House comms director (and his ersthwile cohost on The Circus) Jennifer Palmieri to discuss the shuttering of the federal government earlier this week. Palmieri argues that Democrats were right to deny Republicans the votes it needed to further operationalize its agenda; that focusing on health care is fighting both the good fight (morally) and the right fight (politically) for her party; and that Donald Trump's embrace of Russ Vought's plan to lay off federal workers and cancel programs in blue states is only making it more likely that the GOP ends up being blamed for the shutdown. Main Themes Blame Assignment: the government shutdown is caused by Democrats, specifically Chuck Schumer, to avoid pressure from progressive figures like AOC. Media Criticism: Mainstream media portrays shutdowns emotionally (e.g., TSA officers, families struggling) to support Democrats’ narrative. Lawmakers & Paychecks: Criticizes Democratic lawmakers who refuse to withhold their pay during the shutdown while ordinary federal workers face delays. Healthcare for Illegal Immigrants: Argues Democrats shut down the government over demands to fund healthcare for undocumented immigrants, citing state-level programs (Rhode Island, New York). Public Opinion: References polls showing most Americans (including Democrats and independents) oppose a shutdown over such demands. Contradictions Among Democrats: Notes conflicting statements from different Democratic representatives and senators—some denying responsibility, others admitting to supporting a shutdown. Republican Framing: Republicans upport a “clean” continuing resolution to keep government open, while Democrats are inserting expensive demands ($1.5 trillion, healthcare for illegals, social programs). Polls & Data Used New York Times poll cited: 65% of Americans against shutdowns tied to Democrats’ demands. Breakdown by party: Republicans (92% opposed), Independents (59% opposed), Democrats (43% opposed). Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Thursday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Who Do You Trust? Clay Travis outlines a Gallup poll that reveals trust in the media has plummeted to a record low of just 28%, compared to over 70% in 1980. Clay explores why Americans no longer trust legacy media, citing misinformation during COVID-19 and the Russia collusion narrative. He challenges listeners to share which media figures they still trust, emphasizing the difference between agreeing with someone’s opinion and trusting their factual accuracy. Make it Make Sense Clay also breaks down the controversy over illegal immigrants receiving healthcare benefits in the Democrats’ continuing resolution. While Democrats claim federal funds aren’t directly paying for undocumented healthcare, Clay explains how federal dollars flow to states like California, New York, and Illinois, which then allocate funds for these services. He ties this to COVID-era spending that Democrats want to make permanent, warning that these embedded costs are fueling the shutdown fight. Practicing Gratitude Clay continues the conversation on the collapse of trust in media, sparked by a Gallup poll showing confidence at historic lows. Clay shares listener reactions and humorously calls out fellow radio host Jesse Kelly for ordering $75 tequila shots, tying it into a broader discussion about gratitude and humility in media. Clay argues that many in mainstream media lack appreciation for their privileged positions, contrasting that with his own daily practice of gratitude and the conservative ethos of thankfulness for living in America. The American Dream An in-depth interview with Congressman John James, who is running for governor of Michigan. James responds to Al Sharpton’s false claim that Michigan lacks Black congressional representation, calling out identity politics and emphasizing policy over race. He outlines why Michigan will be the epicenter of U.S. politics in 2026 and 2028, citing open gubernatorial and Senate seats, competitive House races, and the state’s pivotal role in presidential elections. James stresses the need for strong Republican leadership to restore trust, improve education, strengthen the economy, and secure election integrity. He also shares his inspiring personal story—from growing up in Detroit to graduating West Point, serving as an Apache pilot in Iraq, and building a successful business—underscoring his commitment to faith, family, and service. Clay's Got Balls! Clay promotes his upcoming book “Balls”, which argues why young men and sports fans should vote Republican, and says he's going to donate all proceeds to charity and asks the audience which charity he should support. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, WREC's Ben Ferguson fills in. The Schumer shutdown serves merely as a tactic to instill fear and undermine President Trump. Democratic members of Congress are insisting on receiving their salaries during the shutdown, yet it falls on Schumer to resolve the situation. He fears losing his position and facing a primary challenge from AOC. Sen Ruben Gallego asserts that he cannot afford to forgo a paycheck, despite earning $174,000 annually. Is this the kind of representation we want? They don't care about the struggles of those who truly live paycheck to paycheck. In addition, Democrats shut the government down demanding for illegal aliens to receive health care which makes it difficult for American citizens who need those benefits. They are also demanding NPR and PBS funding, they want to revoke rural hospital fundings, this is why they won't lift they shut down, because they are not getting what they want. Also, according to the left, Trump is unwell and unfit for the presidency. They argue that he is mentally unstable and immature, suggesting that his actions are jeopardizing the healthcare of millions, which is absolutely false. Learn more about your ad choices. It's Day 2 of the government shutdown. And we'd like to note that despite the government closing shop, House Republicans have been on vacation since last week, while House Democrats have been showing up to work. Vice President JD Vance told members of the press Wednesday that the real bad guys in the shutdown fight are Democrats, specifically Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Because, according to Vance, it's Schumer standing in the way of low-income Americans getting much-needed health care assistance, assistance that Republicans cut in President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill." Both Democrats and Republicans have dug in their heels on this shutdown. Democrats want Affordable Care Act subsidies extended and Medicaid cuts reversed. And Republicans are fine with the government being closed – and want to fire thousands of federal employees. So to talk more about the shutdown, its impact on everyday Americans, and what comes next, we spoke to New Jersey Democratic Sen. Andy Kim.And in headlines, federal officials say they plan to reopen an Obama-era immigration program, Israel tries to intercept yet another flotilla attempting to carry humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the Supreme Court ruled that Trump can't just fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook… because he doesn't like her.Show Notes:Call Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Trump administration is turning up the heat now that the government has shut down, cancelling billions for green projects, targeting funding for infrastructure in New York and threatening mass firings of federal workers. Democrats, meanwhile, are trying to hold the line in the Senate with their demands about health care. Elsewhere, the White House is asking a group of top universities to join a compact supporting the president's political agenda so that they can get federal funds. MSNBC's Symone Sanders-Townsend joins Tim Miller to talk about the shut down fight and whether the president has overplayed his hand, how Democrats can eventually win seats back in the Senate and what the administration's pressure on academia is really all about. Show Notes: Bulwark Live in DC (10/8) with Sarah, Tim and JVL. Tickets on sale now at TheBulwark.com/events.
The federal government shut down on Wednesday as President Donald Trump threatened mass federal layoffs. Republicans are blaming Democrats for the shutdown, while Democrats are refusing to support a Republican spending bill without guarantees to extend Obamacare provisions set to expire and reverse GOP health care cuts earlier this year.“Democrats are ... trying to reverse some of the cuts from the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' that was passed earlier this year to Medicaid,” says Intercept politics reporter Jessica Washington. “So what Democrats are really trying to message here is that they're fighting for health care, both to reverse some of these Medicaid cuts and also to ensure that the Affordable Care Act subsidies continue.”This week on The Intercept Briefing, senior politics reporter Akela Lacy speaks to Washington about the government shutdown and the impact it will have on public services, including essential services and federal workers. We're also following a federal court case where an appointee of Ronald Reagan blasted the Trump administration for unlawfully targeting pro-Palestine students for protected speech. “It's a historic ruling that rightly affirms that the First Amendment protects non-citizens lawfully present in the U.S. just as it protects citizens,” says Ramya Krishnan, lecturer at Columbia University Law School and senior staff attorney at the Knight First Amendment Institute, which represented plaintiffs in the case. “And if free speech means anything in this country, it means the government can't lock you up simply because it disagrees with your political views.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. You can support our work at theintercept.com/join. As the government shutdown takes effect, Jon is joined by Roosevelt University Professor and contributing writer at The Nation David Faris, and "The Bulwark Podcast" host Tim Miller to examine Democratic strategy. Together, they explore what Democrats are hoping to achieve through the shutdown, discuss whether the party should rethink its resistance tactics and policy priorities, and consider what it would look like if Democrats embraced the hardball precedents Trump and Republicans have set when they eventually return to power. Democrats are making a gamble that voting against a Republican plan to fund the government will be worth the pain of the current shutdown.New Jersey's senior Democratic senator Cory Booker voted against a similar Republican plan to fund the government back in March. And he's been one of the most visible critics of the second Trump administration in the Senate. Host Colby Itkowitz speaks with Booker about the stakes of the current government shutdown, how long it could go on, and why he says Democrats must “do something” to try to reduce looming hikes in health care costs or risk further alienating their base.Today's show was produced by Laura Benshoff and Josh Carroll, with help from Zoe Cummings. A Trump White House video blames Democrats for the government shutdown — accusing them of pushing $1.5 trillion in spending, “open borders,” and even “health care for illegal aliens.” Chris Cuomo shows how these exaggerated claims are designed to stoke anger, divide voters, and make outrage the easiest path to political wins. Cuomo examines why both parties exploit grievance, how shutdown threats are more about blame than solutions, and the growing role of social media in fueling America's hate machine. He challenges the idea that division is inevitable — and asks what it would take for Americans to stop rewarding politics of outrage. In a deranged, demeaning, and dangerous speech to our nation's military leadership - officer and enlisted alike - Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump may have thought they could inspire the men and women of the military to switch their loyalties from the Constitution to a tyrant. They were dead wrong. The danger and dementia of Donald Trump was on full display as he addressed the leadership of America's armed forces. Trump tried to pit the military against the citizenry by saying the military should focus on "the enemy within." And he told them that they should use American cities as military "training grounds."If there was any lingering question about Trump unfitness to be commander in chief of the armed forces, he cleared that up with a speech that was as un-American as it was dangerous. For nightly live Law Talks, please join Glenn on Substack: glennkirschner.substack.comIf you're interested in supporting our all-volunteer efforts, you can become a Team Justice patron at: / glennkirschner If you'd like to support Glenn and buy Team Justice and Justice Matters merchandise visit:https://shop.spreadshirt.com/glennkir...Check out Glenn's website at https://glennkirschner.com/Follow Glenn on:Threads: https://www.threads.net/glennkirschner2Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glennkirschner2Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glennkirsch...Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/glennkirschn...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/glennkirschner2See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
