John welcomes back Christina Hodson (The Flash, Bumblebee) to ask, how do you to construct a great action sequence? Using examples from three different movies, they discuss what good action looks like on the page, how to keep your reader from getting bored or confused, and why production can sometimes blow your plans to smithereens. Then it's a round of How Would This be a Movie?, where we take four stories from the news and pitch how we might adapt them for the screen. Stories include a mysterious painting, a train trapped in a blizzard, a teen who sued his parents, and zombie colleges. We also follow up on director's chairs and mammograms, and answer listener questions on side characters and creating a healthy work/life balance. Kathleen Kennedy, who has led Lucasfilm for more than a decade, is expected to exit her role as president at the end of 2025, according to reports. The longtime industry executive, who helped guide the “Star Wars” franchise through a new era under Disney, plans to retire when her current contract expires. However, a source close to Kennedy has dismissed this as “pure speculation,” saying no official decision has been made.Kennedy took the helm of Lucasfilm in 2012, succeeding George Lucas after Disney acquired the company for $4 billion. Her tenure began with a surge of renewed interest in “Star Wars,” launching the sequel trilogy with 2015's The Force Awakens. The film grossed over $2 billion worldwide and remains the highest-grossing domestic release of all time. She also oversaw the critically acclaimed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and spearheaded the franchise's shift to streaming with hit Disney+ series such as The Mandalorian and Andor. However, not all of Kennedy's projects found success. The sequel trilogy suffered diminishing returns, with The Rise of Skywalker (2019) bringing in roughly half of The Force Awakens' earnings. Meanwhile, 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story became the first Star Wars film to lose money, casting doubts over the franchise's theatrical viability.Beyond Star Wars, Kennedy also led the revival of Indiana Jones, culminating in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). The film, meant to be Harrison Ford's swan song as the character, struggled at the box office, losing an estimated $140 million.Since The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm has struggled to bring Star Wars back to theaters. Multiple announced projects, including films from Patty Jenkins (Rogue Squadron), Kevin Feige, and Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were shelved. The studio's next confirmed theatrical release, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is set for 2026, with a new trilogy reportedly in early development.Kennedy's potential departure marks a pivotal moment for Lucasfilm. Under her leadership, the studio expanded into new formats and reached new audiences, yet the franchise's direction remains uncertain. If she does step down, Disney will face a critical decision: who will shape the future of Star Wars and Lucasfilm beyond 2025?A Decade of Lucasfilm Under KennedyThe Future of Lucasfilm

Jonathan Freeman, ASC faced a unique challenge on Netflix's sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. The books, written by Cixin Liu, are extremely intellectually dense novels. Translating them into visually compelling television seemed like a daunting task. Show creators DB Weiss and David Benioff had worked with Jonathan previously on Game of Thrones, and they leaned into filmmaking that was motivated by impactful storytelling rather than just "cool shots." A key reveal moment in particular was achieved simply by pushing in on a photo of one of the characters in the first episode, revealing how the stories were interconnected. Together, they decided on the look of the show and chose three distinct visual styles for 1960s China, modern London, and the virtual world of a videogame. The 2:3:5 aspect ratio and ARRI ALFA lenses helped differentiate these environments. The lenses were prototypes that Greig Fraser was developing on The Batman. “They had exactly all that beautiful bokeh that you would expect, but the center was optically pure,” says Jonathan. “They also had these chromatic aberrations to them. These distorted, stretchy little bits in the edges of the frame just looked funky and kind of otherworldly. I just like the idea that it could be interpreted as sort of an alien's point of view.” Filming the virtual world within a limited physical space required innovation. Jonathan's "low-res volume" stage concept used a massive wall of SkyPanels and strategically placed lighting to create a realistic, immersive environment for actors. “Each (panel) was almost like a pixel, so we created an array of 110 feet by 45 wide wrapped around 180 degrees.” says Jonathan. “It was a very complex system, but overall the intent was to recreate these live environments the way you might be able to do in a regular volume. Then, there was the lighting on top, similar to the skylight, where we programmed animated lights to recreate sunrise, sunset, dusk, and dawn. It was quite complicated, but we were able to use a real space and transition in camera. It took a lot of minds to put it together, but I thought it was really successful.” Find Jonathan Freeman: http://freemandp.com/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras www.hotrodcameras.com Sponsored by ARRI: https://www.arri.com/en The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

Editor Michael Ruscio, ACE and assistant editor Josh Carley The 3 BODY PROBLEM editing team of editor Michael Ruscio, ACE and assistant editor Josh Carley collaborated for the first time to take on arguably the biggest episode of the Netflix adaptation of the Chinese sci-fi novel.  Helmed by former GAME OF THRONES showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Wiess, 3 BODY PROBLEM masterfully blends multiple genres, including action, fantasy and psychological thriller. The wheels of 3 BODY PROBLEM are set in motion when Ye Wenjie, an astrophysicist who sees her father beaten to death during a struggle session in the Chinese Cultural Revolution, is conscripted by the military. Due to her scientific background, she is sent to a secret military base in a remote region. Her decision at the base to respond to contact from an alien planet implicates a group of scientists in the present day, forcing them to confront humanity's greatest threat. MICHAEL RUSCIO, ACE Michael Ruscio began his editing career making films with independent mavericks Alan Rudolph and Robert Altman.  He has enjoyed editing some of the top dramatic shows of the past twenty years, including The Sopranos, Homeland, Dexter, House of Cards and Six Feet Under, where he first met Rodrigo Garcia, for whom he edited the film Raymond & Ray.  Recent work featuring Michael's talents include Pieces of Her, Your Honor, Carnival Row, Ridley Scott's Raised by Wolves, and Hulu's Catch-22.  Ruscio was nominated for an ACE Eddie Award for the finale of Six Feet Under and won the 2009 Eddie for the pilot of True Blood.  He created a workshop for the American Film Institute on the art of editing which he also taught at the Los Angeles Film School. Additionally, he has directed multiple episodes of the HBO series True Blood and his short film In Order of Appearance received ensemble and individual acting awards during its festival run.  He is currently editing the upcoming Amazon series Butterfly. JOSH CARLEY Josh Carley started his editing career in his home state of Louisiana, where he cut short films, trailers, EPKs, web pieces, local commercials, music videos, and a large array of other kinds of projects. His work led him to projects with other local filmmakers, and projects for SYFY, Lifetime, and Hallmark.  In 2018 Josh moved to Los Angeles where he still resides with his wife and kids. He's had the privilege on working as Assistant Editor on such shows as Amazon's Utopia and The Terminal List, FX's The Old Man, and Apple TV's Truth Be Told.  In addition to 3 Body Problem, his most recent work can be seen in the upcoming final season of The Umbrella Academy. As few mortals can consume media at Tod's pace this week the Regular Joes take a SPOILER FREE pass at two recent film that two of the three have seen. First is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire the newest entry in the recently resuscitated 1980's franchise. Next is Dune Part II, the somewhat more honestly titled, follow up to Dune (2021). But first, they address the alien in the room. Three Body Problem, the novel by Chinese author, Liu Cixin, was considered by many to be unadaptable for film or TV. Despite this, there are actually two adaptations, a Chinese made version, Three Body (2023), spanning 30 episodes that you can stream on Peacock, and the far more approachable 8 episode version that is at the top of the Netflix charts this week. Created in part by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the duo behind Game of Thrones (for better or worse) this epic story may prove every bit as challenging to scale down to the small screen … but, three episodes in, it's pretty good. There's also the usual Random Topics and yet another round of What's in the Box.
