We design a one-shot TTRPG scenario each episode based off of a random prompt. Join Forever DM Daniel and his player, another Daniel, for memey adventures, DM tips, and perhaps get some inspiration for your own next session. Or, put us on in the background to simulate living with two roommates who have very bad takes on popular media. New episodes every other Tuesday, 5 AM EST. Email us: oneshotatatimecast@gmail.com https://oneshotatatime.carrd.co/
We are back after a long hiatus that we will reinitiate right after this episode. We take one part Cthulhu and one part Scooby Doo to create a frankensteined homebrew rule for a collaborative episode with Crash Course DM. Daniel gets interrupted while Daniel checks the recording. Also Josh is here again. Please check out Crash Course DM for the collaborative episode that will be released later this week.
Writing the description for this episode has made me realize that it would be pretty irresponsible to just falsely claim that your show has a celebrity feature in the title. We close it all out making a final fantasy boss fight, and that's okay because none of those words are proper nouns. It's the final episode for this show's current format; what happens next is still up in the air, but we hope you enjoyed the journey (or at least some portion of it). Daniel secures some sponsorships, while Daniel eats burgers.
This episode: we do some RAMBLING, followed by some GAMBLING. We try to make a casino zone preamble to the final boss. Daniel trims a palm tree, while Daniel talks about leaf matchups.
Join us this week for a rant about Palword and the narratives it has sparked online, which is wholly unrelated to the thing we're actually doing, which is designing the interlude part of our campaign's final chapter. Daniel lists three activities, while Daniel gets lost.
This is it: we've finally willed ourselves to sit down and start making up a final dungeon. What's even more impressive: we take actual notes for the first time, to great benefit. Daniel learns a new word, while Daniel gets emotionally invested.
Welcome to 2024 OSAAT. The first 9 or so minutes of this episode get pretty peaky so don't forget to throw on your blinders. TBH we kinda forgot what we were doing last year so here's us channeling Sonic, our favorite Blue Ball, and talking JRPG final dungeons. Daniel makes resolutions, while Daniel gets oneshot. Youtube Tetris video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuJ5UuknsHU
In our arguably most anxiety-inducing episode yet, we are terrified to commit to anything but do end up with a pretty neat little pre-finale dramatic combat encounter. And yes, we also get introspective. Daniel explains a musical, while Daniel buys a hot dog in character.
Just in time for the holiday season, we throw together an underground snow biome to house the 7th and final emerald. Daniel vamps while Daniel looks up Sonic-related images.
We design a weird sort of psychological thriller quest about a lonely trickster demigod and otherwise do not go off the rails at all. Just solid, non-stop game design the whole time. Daniel tries some new sounds, while Daniel mentions geographical locations.
Our inspiration today comes from the feeling of disappointment you get when you go to a convention, among other things. Our Lightning Emerald is also in there somewhere. Daniel does an acronym, while Daniel joins the console war.
This episode we finally get around to flushing out the Magic Kingdom after a whole season. We find out what happens during the good ending of the shrimp mobile fight. Daniel stops doing outro and Daniel shoehorns in a quest for a sandwich.
Daniel's back after a treacherous journey to a foreign land known as Orlando, Florida. We catch up with Daniel as he regale us with his tail to Ceotaku. We also finally build the boss fight for Josh Greenroad. Daniel tries to harmonize, while Daniel tries to keep peta off our backs.
Bang, Bang and Babang... sorry ya'll Daniel is sick and can't right the description so you get my poor grammar skills. Today we work with the beloved newbie DM Josh G. from Crash Course DM who constantly plugs his own podcast through the whole episode can you believe this guy. We tackle the popular boardgame Bang! and create a western style DnD 5e shoot and slash one shot. Plus a cameo appearance from The Eels Improv group and dogs. Check Out Josh and the rest of the Eels on Crash Course DM Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/3LL05YdkMn1Ux81wNnDa42?si=2516ed26d69c45a0
Remember that old Nickelodeon game show? Me neither! Join me in my confusion as we make a game show/livestream event oneshot along with friend of the show/BBEG of our campaign, Josh Greenway/road. Daniel harms animals, Daniel gets his spell canceled, and Josh stands his ground.
This week, we insert Disc 2 to continue our Sonic-inspired Fabula Ultima campaign. After we make good on a promise to include some listener (see also: our friends) character submissions, our plans to design a sewer dungeon are immediately derailed in the worst way. Daniel shows off his freestyle skills, while Daniel faces his traumatic past.
An episode where we're just two guys hangin' out, and then also the typical episode format. We round out this season (I think? I don't know how this works still) with a quick and dirty scenario about going to definitely-not-Zora's-Domain and confronting the monster that is human industry. Daniel gets controversial, while Daniel talks everyone's favorite MMO.
We design a scenario within our definitely-not-Disneyworld while drawing from the story of Witch Hat Atelier. This episode also doubles as a test for a different audio setup, which may or may not have been a bad idea. Daniel gets his own goat, while Daniel pitches lion-based backstories. https://www.needgames.it/fabula-ultima-en/#risorse
We take a break from taking a break from our usual scheduled programming to put our design skills to the test. The results aren't great, according to some guides we found on Google (but we do get introspective). Daniel counts to 3 as a bit, while Daniel has war flashbacks. Lists we used in the episode: https://richiebilling.com/welcome/the-writers-toolshed/fantasy-writing/a-complete-guide-to-fantasy-worldbuilding#WBD10 https://www.masterclass.com/articles/how-to-write-an-engaging-fictional-world
We take a crack at homebrewing a magic system involving physically drawing sigils for Fabula Ultima, at the behest of a cool listener. We also talk about magic systems in general, amongst other ramblings. You can check out literal Disney artist Kenneth's stuff at his homepage https://www.kenesu.com/, which has really dope concept art and features heavily underrepresented Asian cultures. Soft and Hard Magic Systems: https://prowritingaid.com/magic-system
Daniel reveals his latest foray into bad games with Redfall, which inspires the design of our next major Fabula Ultima story piece. We're also trying a new title format in what may be our most coherent design segment yet. Daniel questions island geography, while Daniel commits treason.
Daniel recounts his experiences running a module generated by ChatGPT. We discuss pros and cons, as well as the presence of AI in other creative domains. Daniel discusses imprinting, while Daniel uses the opportunity of taking the reins to immediately discuss adult dolls. This description was generated by ChatGPT (not really though).
It's time for us to jump onto the AI hype bandwagon by seeing what people thought about it 40 years ago. After watching an estimated 60% of Blade Runner and its sequel, we proceed to use it as inspiration to create something wholly unrelated. Daniel gets his recap on, while Daniel researches young men.
We design the first quest that kicks off the full adventure through our Sonic fan fiction tube-world. It is truly harrowing how many times the term “Sonic fan fiction” has come up in this podcast's runtime. Daniel declares cuts, while Daniel defends his very problematic cave idea. Look forward to the rest of the season where we'll be filling out the rest of the world to culminate into a fully playable TTRPG setting. https://www.needgames.it/fabula-ultima-en/#risorse
Today, we roll around through Fabula Ultima's character creation rules at the speed of sound, which, as it turns out, is about 20 minutes per character. Is this system truly the Shangri-La of Sonic OC generation that we've all been dreaming of? Listen on to find out. Daniel nails every music reference, while Daniel gets sold on puke. Richard's fanart of our OC: https://twitter.com/Oneshotatatime/status/1645900021064433664
Think Flat Earth is stupid? Well, get a load of today's episode. We use Fabula Ultima's neat world creation guidelines to create our own ideal world where we can't be punished for infringing on other people's ideas. Daniel stretches his jaw, while Daniel stretches the definition of “natural fantasy”.
Spoiler Alert: We do explain the plot of the game (mostly correctly). And I do apologize this time. But I'm not happy about it. We look back on Tales of Arise, a game one of us finished, and see if we can't put our own spin on a plot from the game. Daniel becomes Daniel for the first time, while Daniel experiences torsion.
Spoiler Alert: We do explain the plot of the game. New players beware. Also spoilers for Tales of Arise, but I will not apologize for that one. After taking a trip down JRPG memory lane, we immediately hone in on a childhood classic, Tales of Symphonia. We also talk a lot of trash about a game we played and kind of enjoyed, Blades in the Dark, as well as the usual off-topic nonsense. Daniel displays his deep knowledge of Symphonia, while Daniel tempers his rage in preparation for the next episode.
As the world plunges into turmoil, two Ds must once again become one and embark on a quest to make poor references to bits they barely remember. Today we take a first look at Fabula Ultima, a neat JRPG-inspired TRPG system that's sure to be narrative fun for the whole family. Daniel skips several evolve forms, while Daniel physically recoils at a song reference. Are all the restaurants booked and you can't find a place to spend your evening with your special someone? Why don't you spend it at home playing imaginary corpse reconstruction. This week we bring on my girlfriend Terra as we tackle her favorite anime Princess Tutu. Terra talks about ballets and Daniel is unable to comprehend it, but he loves listening anyway.
Andrew and I sit down and ask each other questions we thought you all would care about. Daniel explains why he is a yes man and Andrew absorbs the evironment.
It's our last episode of season 4 and last episode of DnD 5e before we pivot into Blades in the Dark. This week we take on the puppet master episode of Avatar the Last Airbender and try to make one ultimate callback reference. Andrew finally builds his Halloween one shot and Daniel forgets the room where it happens.
This week we break the golden rule of podcasting and talk about SpongeBob. This is an add on to our panel we do at conventions. If you don't know what we are talking about come see us at a convention. Andrew trys to remember Overwatch patch notes and Daniel can't speak Japanese.
Ya'll ever wanna just kill a bunch of stuff, gamble and maybe create a board game that already exists. We pull on Andrew's FPS (First person shooter for those uncultured) knowledge and make the prequel to our last Y2k episode. Andrew explains what a spike is and we learn that Daniel can do math. (But not grammar)
This week we throw it back to the 2000s as we rediscover the Y2K scare and learn tips for maintaining a house in Arizona. At least that's what it was supposed to be, but it quickly fell through. Andrew makes his first call back and Daniel acts like a proud father.
We welcome our new co-host Andrew from Season 2 Ep: 19. Now with a wealth of new experiences and six Pokémon he is ready to take on the Podcast challenge again. This time we focus on Pokémon again as Daniel sends out Rhydon and it's super effective on Andrew.
As we say farewell to our beloved Cohost Daniel we tackle his personal prompt Music. It's as vague and open as it sounds. Daniel learns there are musical genres other than pop punk, while Daniel fabricates memories about Rave Master.
This episode commemorates the first listener suggestion to be implemented on the podcast, as well as the 20th anniversary of the release of the 2002 hit film, Catch Me If You Can. An episode rife with celebration. Daniel determines the most painful European country, while Daniel displays his knowledge of One Piece character names.
We try to make something kid-friendly this week (as in the oneshot is kid-friendly; the episode is the usual filth). Our inspiration comes from the animated kids' series “Bluey”. Or, more accurately, a screenshot of Bluey minis being used in a game of DnD. Daniel learns chronomancy, while Daniel gets introspective.
If you think about it, Twitter and the abject darkness and cruelty of the Warhammer 40K universe actually have a lot in common. We sing “Happy Birthday” to Darktide this week, as Daniel takes you to his new old-new-old corner to talk the latest in gaming. Daniel creates possibly the world's greatest homebrew rule, while Daniel learns about legendary war heroes.
We started by trying to make something for Thanksgiving but one of the Daniels is clearly just pretending to know what Thanksgiving even is. What we ended up with is a sort of “Build Your Own Action Movie” system. Don't ask us how we got there from Thanksgiving – just listen to the episode instead so we can boost our metrics. Daniel takes a trip down memory lane, while Daniel explains multiple Sonic music references.
Mild spoilers for Black Panther 2 await you in this episode, adventurer. We finally get over our thalassophobia for long enough to make another deep sea adventure, except with more better this time. Daniel declares his first ever off-topic rant, while Daniel advances the podcast mouth sounds meta.
It's time for another round of “Daniel Rants About a Video Game for Half the Episode”. We use Gotham Knights as inspiration to craft our own city for use in a D&D game–maybe even yours! No? Okay, well, offer stands. Daniel gives some constructive DM tips, while Daniel peaks the audio like never before. Bonus Game Review: Hi, Daniel here. I was only around halfway through Gotham Knights at the time of this recording (even though I had a ton of hours in the game). Final verdict: ignoring the very hard to ignore performance issues, the game was fun overall and I really loved the way the characters were written, but the ending was extremely weak. The game shows a lot of promise until you reach the end and are left wondering, “is that really it?”
In celebration of Halloween, we come up with some character concepts that would make even the most appropriative costumes jealous. We talk character creation and our design approaches as we warm up the feed for season 4. Daniel utilizes his legally acquired D&D knowledge, while Daniel finally gets his level 30 job advancement.
We take a look back over Season 1 and talk about future plans for the podcast. Daniel also spends way too long discussing his DM process.
We finish out season 3 with an open love letter to the show's objectively most valuable listener. Join us in our “Megaman x My Friend's OC” fanfic, where we journey across the 20XX internet on a quest to save the universe from the oligarchy. Daniel flexes his acting skills, while Daniel becomes the bad boy of podcasting.
Spoiler Warning: The one about Tony Stark from the last episode. Need ideas for a fun sequence where a warlock has to confront their patron and fight for their soul? Well, just click that play button, ya big dummy! Just kidding; I cherish and respect you, dear listener. Daniel struggles to explain a title, while Daniel makes the least helpful analogies in the history of the show.
Spoiler Warning: Avengers: Endgame / Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Imagine making a podcast where you can't stop vaguely sexualizing underage fairy tale characters. COULDN'T BE ME LOL. Our inspiration today comes from “Night of the Full Moon”, a deckbuilding, roguelite mobile game. Daniel sponsors his own podcast with his own podcast, while Daniel calls out various artists for wasting his time.
We improv (see also: make up a bunch of stuff) a oneshot idea based off of upcoming events in our lives. This episode contains facts about grocery stores. Daniel flexes his editing skills, while Daniel offends the show's most valuable listener.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR FROZEN 2 We've created something truly beautiful. Get ready for non-stop 100% true facts about movies and wrestling that Daniel recalls accurately and completely on the fly. Daniel gets deep in some lore, while Daniel sings his heart out.
The Capcom simping continues in our latest episode, featuring a Resident Evil fanfic with extra steps. If you enjoyed listening to Daniel explain something he loves to Daniel who knows nothing about it the last time, then you're sure to enjoy this as well (though why you do is beyond me). Daniel explains cool new ways to railroad your players, while Daniel gets confused about the letter H.
Listening to this episode may qualify you for a one topping personal pan pizza. We're trying a new improv-esque style, featuring the Scholastic Book Fair. Daniel learns about white supremacy, while Daniel brings up masturbation slightly more than usual.
